When I make Aliyah, do I get a free degree?
How long will I serve in the army?
What jobs are good in Israel?
Your tuition is subsidized if you begin studies before
age 27 for a BA and age 30 for an MA, AND if
you start your studies within three years of Aliyah.
Students who are under 23 also receive assistance for
Mechina, a year preparatory course. You must study
at a program recognized by Minhal HaStudentim, the
Student Authority; if you are in a private or international
program, you are only eligible for partial assistance. If
you already have a degree, a parallel degree (BA or
MA) is usually not subsidized.
Army service for men and women is determined by age
of entry into Israel prior to Aliyah, family status at time
of enlistment and physical profile. Single, male Olim
under the age of 22 usually serve significantly longer
(between 24 and 30 months) than Olim who are 22
and above (maximum 6 months). If you have an Israeli
background, there may be additional requirements.
Choose an area of study that interests you and within
that field, find out which jobs are in demand in the Israeli
market. Good options to consider are accounting, law,
health-related fields, business, hi-tech, engineering,
education, graphic design, administration and
nonprofit work. A summer internship in your field is a
great way to network and learn what the profession
is like in Israel. If you study in the US, make sure your
degree is transferable.
For information about specific university courses,
see www.meidaat.co.il.
Lishkat Hagiyus (the IDF recruitment center) usually waits
8 to 12 months from your date of Aliyah to send your
Tzav Rishon (first induction notice). If you’re interested
in serving sooner, once you make Aliyah, you can
contact Lishkat Hagiyus and expedite the process.
How do I receive funding?
Open a student file at Minhal HaStudentim by
contacting Naomi Shmuel at [email protected].
(If you already made Aliyah and have not opened
a student file, be in touch with your local branch of
Minhal HaStudentim.) You will need to provide your
Teudat Oleh/Teudat Zehut, original high school
diploma and transcripts, record of army or National
Service (or exemption), passport photo, proof of
Israeli bank account and letter of acceptance to an
Israeli institution.

Can I speed up my draft date?
I don’t want to go into the army alone...
If you make Aliyah without your parents, you are eligible
for group programs like Garin Tzabar and receive the
benefits of being a Chayal Boded (lone soldier).
Do I have to know Hebrew?
Hebrew is crucial at all levels. When you join the army,
the better your language skills, the more options you have
for job placement; many positions require high-level
Hebrew. In the Israeli workforce, a good command of
conversational Hebrew opens up job opportunities and
expands vocational options. Knowledge of Hebrew,
combined with relevant professional experience and
academic background, ensures successful professional
and social integration.
