The Executive Director’s Report - Julia Schwartz-Leeper, LMSW
A Note From The Executive Director
Thank you to everyone who worked so hard on our Annual Gala. Once again we were hosted
at Horace Mann and had a wonderful evening honoring Charles Moerdler and our own
Ronnie Lemanski. Our Community Partners at The Horace Mann School welcomed our
guests and despite the rainy weather provided a Spring Garden atmosphere. This fundraiser is so important
in supporting our programs and services, especially those seniors who are most in need. Many thanks to
everyone who helped organize and supported the event. Special thanks to the fabulous Gala Committee and
Betty for a great event.
We are looking forward to a fabulous summer and hope to see all of you soon.
Health report—Lisa Spinelli, r.n.
Medication Management:
As we age we may be faced with more and chronic health conditions accompanied by an
increase in doctor-prescribed medications. With an increase in medication, prescribed or
OTC, there is an increase in the chance of unwanted harmful drug interactions.
Polypharmacy (the use of multiple medications to treat a medical condition); the over
prescribing of medications and drug interactions are common and can be serious. The more you know
about your medications and the more you talk with your doctor, the easier it is to avoid problems.
Before you visit your MD:
 Make a list of questions you want to ask about your health and medications and be prepared to take
written notes.

Bring an up to date list of all the prescription and non- prescription medications you take along with
key facts about your medical history.

If your MD prescribes medication, make sure you understand the name of the medicine, how, when
and for how long you will be taking it.

Ask what the medicine is intended to do, and whether lab tests will be needed to monitor the
effectiveness.

Ask how long you will be taking the medicine, and whether you should stop taking it once you feel
better. Be honest about any ways in which you are having trouble managing your medication routine-
Forgetting or skipping doses, side effects, having trouble affording your medications.

Read the information packaged with your medicine for important information and finally contact your
MD if you experience new or unexpected symptoms or side effects from your medications.

Having multiple doctors prescribing medications can lead to overprescribing and more potential drug
interaction. Make sure you bring a list of all medications. OTC drugs and supplements you take to
each new doctor you visit. Overall, compliance and open communication with your MD is crucial for
your well-being. Over medication and drug interactions are common and should be taken seriously.
P.S. Remember you can always discuss your medications with me. I cannot take the place of
your doctor but I can help you understand what medications are for and help to identify potential adverse
effects or issues.

HEALTH NEWS
Health Benefits of Crocheting and Knitting
Need a reason to craft more? Or to tell your family when they ask about the hours you spend
making scarves? Crocheting and knitting are good for you!
Benefits of crocheting and knitting include

Reduced stress

Better ability to cope with illness (physical or mental)

Decreased risk of cognitive impairment as you age
But why do knitting and crocheting help?
Relaxed, repetitive motions such as the ones used in crochet and knitting can help calm down the
body and the brain. Have you ever come home and sat down to work on your current project after a
bad day? Not only does working on something you enjoy help, but the actual motions involved
assist in creating a better mood. Our blogger Kathryn Vercillo has gathered many stories of how
crafting can help people through illnesses here on her blog. She also shares her own story of
crocheting through depression.
Knitting and crochet also help with fine motor skills and keeping your fingers and hands feeling
good as you age. Additionally, all patterns involve some aspects of math, keeping your mind sharp
and letting you practice math skills. Seeing how math operates in the "real world" is especially
helpful for kids: they can see concrete examples of the skills they are learning in the classroom.
Crocheting and knitting are often done in groups, either formally or informally. Whether you take a
class, have a regular monthly guild meeting, or just get together with your friends every once in a
while to chat and work on projects, chances are you have first-hand experience with how well
knitting and crocheting go together with social activities. Being among friends can help combat
loneliness and isolation, which can contribute to health problems.
Schools and prisons are very different institutions, but there is a trend in them for crocheting and
knitting groups. Social skills are worked on in both groups, and the calming effects of crafts can be
especially useful. Schoolchildren practice following instructions and using math in everyday
situations. Prisoners often work on projects for charities, such as hats for the needy, or blankets for
animal shelters.
How has crafting helped your health? Share your stories on social media with the hashtag
#redheartyarns.
Join the Knitting Group on Thursdays at 10:00 a.m.

Movie guide
July 6-The Race
As a student and athlete in Depression-era America, Jesse Owens bears the weight of family expectations, racial tension at college, and his own high standards for competition. At Ohio State
University, Jesse finds a savvy coach and stalwart friend in Larry Snyder, who is unafraid to push
the young man to his limits. Bolstered by the love and support of Ruth Solomon, with whom he
has a young daughter, Jesse’s success in intercollegiate competitions earns him a place on the
U.S. Olympics team, if there is to be a team going to the 1936 Olympics at all. The American
Olympics committee weighs a boycott in protest against Hitler with committee president Jeremiah Mahoney
and millionaire industrialist Avery Brundage
debating the issue. Once Brundage prevails with the committee and U.S. participation is confirmed, Jesse
enters a new racial and political minefield after he arrives in Berlin with his fellow athletes.
July 13-I Saw The Light(Hank Williams)
Iconic, tormented singer-songwriter Hank Williams emerged from the local Alabama
music scene after World War II. His wife Audrey was desperate to sing by his side despite being
of lesser talent, which fueled an extremely turbulent home life. But Williams' ability to write
songs covering a wide range of emotions, using his own personal troubles as inspiration, became
the essence of country music. In the end, he realized his dreams: hit records, a place on Nashville's prestigious stage and radio show the Grand Ole Opry and even guest spots on the thennew medium of TV.
July 20-Eddie the Eagle
Michael "Eddie" Edwards was an unlikely but courageous British ski-jumper who never stopped
believing in himself – even as an entire nation was counting him out. With the help of a rebellious and charismatic coach, Eddie takes on the establishment and wins the hearts of sports fans
around the world by making an improbable and historic showing at the 1988 Calgary Winter
Olympics.
July 27-My Greek Fat Wedding II
Sixteen years after Toula Portokalos and Ian Miller get married in a wild Greek wedding, Toula
still working in her parents’ Greek restaurant, and Ian strive to raise their rebellious teenage
daughter, Paris, who is graduating from high school. Toula and Ian are also dealing with marital
issues of their own. The whole Portokalos clan is brought together again when the elder
Portokalos discover that the Priest never signed their wedding certificate from decades ago and
so they must plan an even bigger and "Greeker" wedding.
