Bon Celebrates its Golden
Anniversary
Bon Tool Co. is celebrating its 50th anniversary
in 2008. Built on the strength of a single masonry product, Bon’s product line has expanded
to nearly 5,000 professional-grade tools for masonry, concrete finishing, decorative concrete,
drywall, plaster and stucco, flooring, roofing and
general construction.
It was the development of the Masonry Guide
System that launched the company. These premarked poles increase the speed and accuracy
of laying courses, or rows of brick on the outside of a building. Without guides, a “lead man”
has the time-consuming task of building-up the
corners of the structure, which determine the
brick spacing of the project. With masonry
guides, there is no waiting on
the lead man. All of the masons on the crew can begin
bricking once the guides are
set. Overcoming resistance to
change from a long-established
trade, the initial investment
required by builders, and the
need to re-train masons, masonry guides proved to revolutionize masonry work.
When Carl P. Bongiovanni
founded Bon in 1958 he did not
imagine this one, patented,
masonry product would be the
start of a company with products that span the building
trades, with customers that span the globe. He
did however, insist upon the highest standards
of workmanship and quality. Those standards
were applied to each of tools developed and
manufactured by Bon as the product line expanded over the years.
Today it’s Carl A. Bongiovanni, the founder’s
son, who is at the helm and carrying on the
tradition. The tradition of innovation continues
as Bon introduced the first-ever all stainless
steel trowel and its line of stainless steel bullet
groovers for concrete finishing.
Last year Bon completed its acquisition of O’Tool
Co, a Nevada-based tool company with distribution mainly in the western half of the United
States. With the purchase, Bon now maintains
a distribution center in Henderson, NV in addition to its distribution center at its headquarters
in Gibsonia. Bon’s increased customer base benefit from

Over 300 Tools Added to Product Line
Bon’s 2008 full line catalog has been expanded with over 300 new products.
This catalog is Bon’s largest yet, featuring more than 4,000 products for the
building trades. New items span the trades including a Stainless Steel Walking
Edger/Groover for concrete; a Brick Set with Hand Protector for masonry; and
Tapered Darbies for the plaster and stucco trades. John Wight, vice president of
sales, anticipates that the expanded product line will be well-received in the
marketplace. “We’re excited about the 2008 catalog which features our largest
selection of tools yet,” says Wight.

Set your “Sites” higher … we did at
www.bontool.com
Bon’s expanded website includes a Vo-Tech Center designed for instructors of the building trades. You’re just a click away from the information
that makes your teaching job easier.
Visit www.bontool.com and see the nearly 50 masonry project drawings
that can be printed from our website. These drawings each include
complete course layouts and a list of materials required. They are great
building ideas for hand-on training or contest projects.
Learn how to use Bon’s Step Testing Gauge, the perfect tool for grading
student projects or judging masonry competitions. The gauge is
notched, or “stepped” every 1/16” . It is used with a straightedge,
level or square to evaluate finished projects by measuring “steps“ off
true alignment. It completely takes the guesswork out of grading masonry projects.
Check out our growing photo gallery of students and their projects. You
can even add your photos to our site. Directions to submit your photographs can be printed from our website or call 800-444-7060 for more information.
In addition to the Vo-Tech Center, check out our growing library of information at Bon’s online Knowledge Center. Here you
will find information on all of the building trades. Learn how to use decorative concrete texture mats to install a patio; troubleshoot problems with diamond blades; learn how to build a simple retaining wall; find useful metric conversion and more.
As a leading manufacturer of tools for the building trades, Bon is committed to work with training programs to ensure a skilled
workforce. From our support of national programs to our student recognition program and the expansion of our website, Bon
remains dedicated to promoting excellence in the building trades.
