Avoid the mindless munching
By Cristina Blackwell
[email protected]
Sometimes the stretch between
lunch and dinner can seem forever,
and all you need is a little pick-meup to hold you over. But don’t even
think about grabbing those 100-calorie
snack packs you see on the supermarket shelves.
A recent study found that when
people eat from portion-controlled
snack packs, they tend to think less
about what they’re eating and eat
more of it, when compared to people
who are given full-sized packs of the
same food. Think of it as snacking
complacency-you’re so reassured
that your portions are limited, that
you end up overdoing it. Talk about
a diet disaster.
That’s why it’s important to implement your own portion control. Check
out this list of healthy snacks, and
how much you can eat without breaking the 100-calorie barrier. The more

I have MAN[y] Issues
“Anything they can do we can do
better…in the Kitchen”
By Dennis M. Ayotte Jr.
[email protected]
A year ago, I was an expert at
making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, master of the Foreman Grill
and made the best Ramen noodle
casserole, yes casserole.
I admit, I was proud of my above
average skills for making PB&J
sandwiches and my recipe for Ramen
noodle casserole, but I was the poster
child for what not to eat. Growing up,
my father wasn’t much of a cook.
Granted he cooked during the holidays, but still he was more of a “let’s
order a pizza and call it night” kind of
guy. So, eventually I grew older and
settled for what the dollar menus had
to offer which led to furthering my
kitchen illiteracy.
Entering college I figured I’d
have girlfriends who could cook
and would pick up some ideas—
big mistake. The kitchen is where
women once ruled for ages, but the
tides haven’t turned in favor of men
they’ve completely receded (no, not
because of global warming and Al
Gore). It’s because women are more
independent and nowadays a man
needs to know how to cook. Its 2010
and frozen burritos and chicken pot
pies won’t cut it anymore.
Nine months ago, I had this epiphany and decided to step up my game
in the kitchen. The first day I went
to grocery store, I had no list, no
clue how to cook, and yet I was
determined to figure it out. Parting
with my trusty Foreman grill was
hard but the ability to cook food that
was healthy and great-tasting was
my goal.
My first few trips to the grocery
store and cooking for myself ended
with bland-tasting food. My fridge
would fill up with stuff that would
reach its expiration far before I knew
what to do with it. I decided then that
a grocery list was always a must. If
not I’d end up walking out of the store
spending more than anticipated and
food that looked good at the time.
Second, I would (roughly) map
out a meal plan for the week this way
I wasn’t over shopping or buying
things that weren’t food—like the
change sorter I once bought—what
was I thinking? I wasn’t, but at least
my coins are neatly sorted.
Check weekly ads and find produce and meats that are on sale. Tailor
your meal plan around those items
to save money. After that I began
to drop pounds and show signs of a
young (thinner) Emeril. I never used
a single cookbook. Most of my ideas
came from cooking shows I watched
and good old Google.
Then BAM! Nine months later
I’m ready to try out for the Next
Food Network Star. I never knew
the power of fresh cracked black
pepper, basil leaves and cumin. Or,
the tastiness of vegetables and fruits
like squash, onions, mushrooms, bananas, nectarines and plums. Now, I
have a sense of pride and comfort that
I’ve come up with my own signature
dishes like spicy pork tacos topped
with feta cheese and red leaf lettuce
or my cranberry coconut chicken
salad with green onions, walnuts and
my own secret ingredient. Finding
things I liked that were healthy was
crucial. I had more failed attempts
at cooking than Lindsay Lohan has
failed drug test. Some meals were
just awful, yet others were amazing.
It took practice, but like I said I’m on
the Food Network’s radar.
My new found forte has keep my
beer gut and love handles at bay, and
the fact I can invite a girl over and
cook her my own braised tomatillo
chicken followed up with chocolate
chip ice cream cookie sandwiches for
desert that I made scores huge points.
Being a good cook only adds to
your overall awesomeness, but it
also shows you are knowledgeable
in an area where women usually rule.
Anything they can do, we can do or at
least attempt too. If all else fails email
me, and I will send you my recipe for
my Ramen noodle casserole.

Movie: “Ip Man” DVD 2008
Rating: R (Violence)
Studio: Beijing Shenshi
Where I Saw It: Home
Okay, it’s time I reviewed a
movie for the hardcore action fans
out there. Over the last couple of
weeks, I’ve been telling you about
several films that were lacking in
the testosterone area. This week
that all changes… in a big way.
Now, since I feel actions movies that are currently at the theater
are made mostly for young teens,
I thought I’d go back a few years
to a fantastic movie you may have
missed, “Ip Man.”
First of all, you may have missed
this movie because it had a limited
release here in the U.S. What you
may not know, is that it stars one
of the biggest martial arts action
figures, Donnie Yen (“Hero,”
“Blade II”).
Something else you may not be
aware of is that the movie is based
on the real-life story of the legendary Wing-Chun master, Ip Man, for
whom the movie is named after.
Lastly, to tie it all together, Ip Man
was a teacher to none other than
the one and only, Bruce Lee. Yes,
THE Bruce Lee.
The movie is set in World War
II, specifically, during the period
of time when Japan invaded China.
This was a time of great struggle
for the Chinese people. The Japanese were ruthless and treated the
Chinese with unrelenting hatred
and violence. It was during this
amazingly difficult era that one
man rose up to give an entire
country hope; this unlikely hero
was Ip Man.
Ip Man is credited with mastering and cultivating the art of Wing
Chun, a martial arts system origi-
nally invented by a woman and the
same one that Bruce Lee practiced.
Now, I know most men reading this
may have just made a strange face.
A martial art invented by a woman?
Don’t dismiss it so quickly.
Wing Chun is very brutal when
used by a true master and this
movie shows some of the most
amazing fighting sequences I have
ever seen, in any martial arts film!
I am not exaggerating when I say
that I can watch this movie over
and over if I am in the mood for
On top of it all, it is truly a magnetic film most everyone will find
deeply moving. It’s simply about a
man who fights oppression, fights
to defend his honor and the honor
of those around him, and one who
is ultimately an inspiration to millions – and still is.
“Ip Man” is an incredibly entertaining movie. In case you are
wondering, the DVD gives you
the option to listen it in English
as well so there are no excuses if
you normally don’t watch foreign
films. And yes, it’s been added to
my DVD collection.
So, is it good? Watch it and you

La Diva de la Banda le dio el sí
al beisbolista Esteban Loaiza; su
vestido fue diseñado por Eduardo

Gloria Trevi, Mariana Seoane y
forzó a venir?
“Entonces
vamos a darle gracias a Dios y
comenzar esta preciosa ceremonia”, rezó Pedro Rivera.
Y así fue, precioso y a veces
conmovedor para los novios,
el cortejo e invitados, como
Joan Sebastian, José Manuel
Figueroa, Mario Quintero,
Diana Reyes, Vicky y Marisol
Terrazas, Tito El Bambino,
Gloria Trevi, Mariana Seoane, Charytín Goyco, Larry
Hernández y Raúl de Molina,
entre otros, disfrutaron de tan
significativo evento.
“¡Estoy feliz!”,
dijo la novia mientras Loaiza

“Hottest Show on Earth” hits S.A.: You’ve
never seen anything like KISS before
By Cristina Blackwell
[email protected]
Legendary rockers KISS are back
in support of their newest album,
“Sonic Boom” with a tour they’re
modestly calling, The Hottest Show
on Earth, which will hit our city
Sunday, September 19 at the AT&T
The boys are back with a tour
that is bigger than ever and they’re
attracting a new generation of fans
performing such classics as “Detroit
Rock City” and “Rock and Roll All
Nite” as well as hits they haven’t
played in the U.S. in many years.
Seeing KISS in concert will not
only result in the time of your life, it
will also make you feel good about
yourself. The band is donating $1
from each ticket sold to the U.S.
Armed Forces’ Wounded Warriors
Project, an organization that helps
rehabilitate our heroes from the
Afghanistan and Iraq wars.
La Prensa caught up with KISS
drummer, Eric Singer aka “CATMAN,” and lead guitarist Tommy
Thayer to discuss all about the infamous band, Gene’s crazy tongue,
and what you can expect at this
one-of-a-kind show.
LP: What can San Antonio look
forward to with this concert?
Tommy: You don’t have to like
the band to enjoy the show. Once
you see the first 15 minutes, it’s hard
not to be moved by it. It’s a very
impressive, over-the-top show. It’s
totally different from other concerts
out there. We put so much time,
money and dedication into the show,
making sure it’s special and unique.
Eric: It is probably the biggest
show that we have ever done with
visual and screens and pyro. It is
a big undertaking to take this tour
around the country. If you haven’t
seen KISS before, then you’re going
to see something you’ve never seen
before. I’m not afraid of going out
on a limb and say nobody has ever
seen anything like KISS before. I
know for a fact –it’s just the way it is.
And it’s not to say that it’s all smoke
and mirrors because there is the substance of the music as well. I am not
saying this because I am biased and
in the band, but everyone must see a
KISS show in their life. Because it’s
like going to see one of those unique
things in your life, like the Statue of
Liberty in New York or going to the
Grand Canyon or Disneyland. And
you know what? Maybe you may not
have liked KISS when you walked
in the door, but you’re going to like
KISS when you walk out.
LP: You’re exactly right, even
“non-KISS-fans” go to your concerts and it’s because you guys
are timeless! So what’s the secret
behind such legendary success?
Tommy: The secret to timeless
appeal is sticking to your roots and
what you love about rock and roll
from the very first time you ever
heard it when you were a kid, and
not fall in trends or what the latest
bands are doing or what’s popular
and all that kind of stuff. You need
to stick to your guns and what you
loved about rock and roll when you
first listened to it. Do that and it will
have a timeless quality to it. I think
music for the most part, works in
that way.
Eric: I think part of it is that we
work hard. I mean, literally, we
really take our time in everything
we do and make sure it’s all done
perfect. The one thing I always
admire about our band is that we’re
always trying to improve and make
it bigger and better. We’re always
trying to make a bigger visual spectacle. That’s what we’re known for
and putting on a big show. I always
say it is like rock and roll meets the
circus. It is about being entertainers
and being entertained.
LP: Tell us about your newest
album “Sonic Boom.”
Tommy: The album came out last
October and it’s the first record that
KISS has done in 11 years so it’s really a milestone record. We had a lot
to prove because the last record was
kind of mediocre and it really didn’t
come together very well. In this record we worked very hard and what
was interesting about it was that we
didn’t have any record companies
or management people or agents
or anybody giving us direction so it
was just us four. We would literally
go to each other’s houses and work
on songs, rehearse them and record
them. No one heard the record until it
was finished except the four of us, so
it was a very pure, organic approach.
LP: How do you feel about the
extravagant costumes and crazy
make-up? Is it still tough getting
used to?
Eric: It’s very empowering.
When there’s makeup involved,
we each take on a new persona or
character. The beauty of wearing a
costume and makeup like that gives
you the ability to be anything you
want and it doesn’t have to mean it’s
“you” because you’re in disguise.
LP: People tend to think musicians are flawless. Can you recall
any embarrassing moments?
Eric: We go through embarrassing, silly moments all the time. I
mean, let’s face it, we’re humans! A

y sigue cautivando a generaciones
enteras con su talento de actor y
A Don Ismael Rodríguez Jr.,

it’s a spider! The whole time I’m
singing there’s a spider crawling

kind of insect is in there. Obviously
I keep getting distracted because I’m

it off. That two-and-a-half minute
song, which is really a short song,
seemed like an eternity!
LP: So, Eric, after much controversy you finally had the chance to
sing “Beth.” What was that like?
Eric: Actually, that came up from
our manager, Doc McGhee. You
have to remember, the band has been
around 36 years touring. There are
a lot of records to draw from –we
can’t NOT do certain songs, it just
wouldn’t fly. ‘Beth’ was a big hit
and it was a KISS song and I know
that there were some people that
said, ‘Oh, this song belongs to this
guy and that song belongs to that
guy.’ I mean, if there’s one thing
I’ve learned being in the band is
that you just can’t please everybody
and when that song was written, the
person was part of KISS, so it’s a
KISS song!
LP: We’re a Hispanic newspaper, have you ever sung or thought
of singing in Español?
Eric: Not much, I mean, not nada!
I know we’ve done some stuff for
fun, like we sang ‘La Bamba’ one
time at a concert. YouTube ‘KISS

LP: Why the name “KISS”?
Eric: Paul [Stanley] came up with
that name for the band and he chose
that word because it has a universal
meaning. You don’t have to speak
English to know what it means. And
that’s what the band is about, we’re
universal. We’re not just an American band, we’re for everybody.

The little things...
By Nina Duran
To have faith in little things is a great thing
Querida Nina:
No
Querida Elena:
“If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this
mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will
be impossible for you.”

Nina can be emailed at [email protected]

“A mi me encanta Chicago,
Yo creo
Estoy
contento de haber regresado,
creo que si no hubiera sido una
historia como esta no hubiera
aceptado”, confesó el actor de
origen peruano.
Estamos acostumbrados a
ver a García en personajes de
chica buena y sumisa. En esta
fabulosa producción veremos
lo contrario y nos llevaremos la
sorpresa de ese personaje.
“En el caso del personaje que
interpreto, lo escogí porque
quería hacer algo diferente de
los proyectos que había hecho.
El solo tema y tono de esta
novela me gustó mucho, mi gran
temor era ser extremadamente
naturalista. Confieso que fue
algo difícil porque el tono de
la telenovela es algo diferente”,
compartió la actriz.
Ambos actores dejan la última
respuesta al público, que será
quien decida si el proyecto fue
bueno o malo.
cadena Telemundo. Están todos
invitados a gozar de esta historia
que los cautivará.
