Dear Friends in Christ –
Advent approaches! I can’t believe how quickly Christmas is coming.
To prepare to celebrate, a number of very engaging events at Saint Paul’s are coming up. So please make
sure to mark your calendars.
Next weekend’s Collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) needs your help.
CCHD was founded to end the cycle of poverty in the United States by funding organizations that help people help
themselves. With the tradition of improving education, housing situations, and economic development, CCHD
continues to make a positive impact on communities nationwide. Your contribution will defend human dignity and
help those living on the margins of our society.
This year, we will participate in our neighborhood’s Winter Eve celebration, the first Monday after
Thanksgiving, November 30th. The front of the bulletin has the full schedule.
Also, please make plans to attend the Fordham University Lessons and Carols on Saturday, December 5 th
at 8 PM. Admission is free, but come early. It’s a service of readings and carols to prepare you for the celebration
of Christmas.
The Giving Tree will be up after Thanksgiving and gives us the opportunity to help those in need during
the Christmas season.
The Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy opens on Tuesday, December 8th, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. Pope Francis writes that he has called for the year because: "Perhaps we have long
since forgotten how to show and live the way of mercy … The temptation ... to focus exclusively on justice made us
forget that this is only the first, albeit necessary and indispensable step … The time has come for the Church to
take up the joyful call to mercy once more … It is time to return to the basics and to bear the weaknesses and
struggles of our brothers and sisters … Mercy is the force that reawakens us to new life and instills in us the courage to look to the future with hope."
In addition to masses on December 8th, our new Melita Ensemble will present a special evening program
after the evening 6 PM mass.
These are just a few of the events happening at Saint Paul’s – please join us in celebrating the presence of
Christ in our community and city.

Thanksgiving Day Mass
Thursday, November 26th at 11 AM
We start after the Parade passes Columbus Circle. The Parish Center will be closed on Thursday and Friday in observance. One Daily Mass will be celebrated on the Friday after Thanksgiving at 10 AM. Except
for these masses, the Church will be closed on Thanksgiving Day and Friday.

Broadway’s Future Concert
Monday, November 30, 2015 | 6 PM
Arts and Artists at St. Paul will present its third Broadway’s
Future Songbook concert of this season on Monday, November 30th at 6 PM at The New York Public Library for the
Performing Arts at Lincoln Center - Bruno Walter Auditorium - 111 Amsterdam Avenue (just south of 65th Street).
This month’s concert will feature the songs of the awardwinning songwriter Matthew Lee Robinson. We are very
lucky to have performers and musicians from some of
Broadway’s top shows lending us their talents making these
concerts so very popular. This series is produced, directed
and hosted by John Znidarsic. Admission is FREE and seating is on a first come-first serve basis.

What Happened at the Synod on the Family?

Come to the Parish Center and join a conversation with Father
Mark-David Janus, CSP about the recently concluded “Synod
on Marriage and Family.” Father Mark-David returned from
Rome last week and will share some reflections on what happened at the synod. All are welcome!
"Chuck" the Giving Turkey is back! Every year, MSG requests specific donation items, which are written on Chuck's
feathers. Come visit Chuck and take a feather with the item
you wish to donate (he sits at a display table towards the
back of the church by the column on the left side of Fr.
Hecker's tomb). Drop off all donation items at the Parish
Center no later than November 23rd (Monday before
Thanksgiving). MSG brings all donated items on their annual mission trip in August to the Hogar Belen Homes for Disabled and Abandoned children in Nicaragua. Thank you for

Seeking Confirmation as an Adult in 2016?
Saturdays, from January 23 to March 19

For many reasons, some of us do not receive Confirmation
as teenagers. If you are seeking Confirmation now, perhaps
because you are planning to be married sometime after Easter 2016, now is the time to prepare. A series of classes will
be conducted by Fr. Tom Holahan, CSP on Saturdays from
10 AM to 11:30 AM. Classes begin at the parish center (405
W 59th St) on January 23th and end on March 19th. It will
be possible to make up classes if necessary. Confirmation is
set for sometime in the spring of 2016. If plan to make the
Saturday morning schedule or have questions, please contact

Nuestra Señora de la Divina Providencia
Se celebra la festividad de La Señora en la misa del 22 de Noviembre.
¡Oh Dios de la misericordia y del amor, escucha la oración de tu pueblo bajo la protección
de la Madre de la Divina Providencia, suplica su ayuda y espera su consejo!
En la mitad del siglo XIX fue nombrado obispo de Puerto Rico, Monseñor
Gil Esteve y Tomás, este hombre era español, de Cataluña y llevo consigo a
la isla la devoción a Nuestra Señora de la Divina Providencia, esta advocación tiene su origen en Italia, surgió en el siglo XIII y tiempo después paso
a España, donde se creo un santuario en Tarragona, Cataluña.
El obispo Gil Esteve puso gran empeño en fomentar la devoción a la Virgen,
reconstruyo la iglesia Catedral, que estaba destruida, y en poco tiempo logro conseguir con ayuda
de los fieles recursos para adquirir en Barcelona la Sagrada imagen de la Virgen, le levantó un altar y estableció su culto el día 2 de enero, que quedó designado como su fiesta anual.
La imagen fue realizada en Barcelona, en ella la Virgen esta sentada y tiene al Niño dormido angelicalmente sobre su falda, las manos de María se unen en posición de oración, mientras sostiene
la manito izquierda de Jesús, estuvo expuesta al culto en la catedral, hasta 1920 cuando fue
sustituida por otra talla, que es la imagen de Nuestra Señora de la Divina Providencia más conocida por el pueblo puertorriqueño.
La imagen original venerada por los Siervos de María y otras órdenes religiosas italianas, es un
óleo en el que aparece la Virgen con el Niño Jesús dormido plácidamente en sus brazos.
La isla de Puerto Rico (llamada por los indígenas "Borinquén"), fue descubierta el 19 de
noviembre de 1493, cuando Colón desembarco en ella durante su segundo viaje. Por tal motivo
dicha fecha fue elegida para su solemnidad en 1969, cuando S. S. Pablo VI declaró a Nuestra Señora Madre de la Divina Providencia, como patrona principal de la isla de Puerto Rico, en el decreto del Papa se indicaba que la fecha de la Virgen debía trasladarse del dos de enero (aniversario
de la llegada de la imagen a la isla), al 19 de noviembre, uniendo de esa forma la veneración a la
Santísima patrona, con el descubrimiento de la isla.
