Let God arise and let His enemies be scattered, and let those
who hate Him, flee from before His face!
As smoke vanishes, so let them vanish! As wax melts before the
fire!
Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death,
and upon those in the tombs bestowing life!
!‫المسيح قام! حقاً قام‬
Christ Is Risen! Truly He Is Risen!
Χριστός Άνέστη! Άληθώς Άνέστη!
For Non-Orthodox Christians
We welcome all people across all ethnicities and religions to pray with us, however it
is an unfortunate consequence that there are divisions of Christianity, and therefore,
we cannot extend to you a general invitation to receive the Eucharist (Holy
Communion). Orthodox Christians believe that the Eucharist is an action of the
celebrating community, signifying a oneness in faith, life, and worship. Reception of
the Eucharist by Christians not fully united with the Orthodox Church would imply a
oneness, which does not yet exist, and for which we must all pray. We invite you to
receive the blessed and holy bread that is given out to all at the end of the service, and
are very pleased that you are with us this morning.

This is the day which the Lord has made; Let us
rejoice and be glad in it!
O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good; For His
mercy endures forever.
The Reading from the Acts of the Apostles (1:1-8)
In the first words, O Theóphilos, I have dealt
with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until
the day when He was taken up, after He had
given commandment through the Holy Spirit to
the apostles whom He had chosen. To them He
presented Himself alive after His passion by
many proofs, having been seen by them for forty
days, and speaking of the Kingdom of God. And

having assembled together with them, He
charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but
to wait for the promise of the Father, which, He
said: “You heard from Me, for John baptized
with water, but before many days you shall be
baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
So when they had come together, they asked
Him: “Lord, wilt thou at this time restore the
kingdom to Israel?” And He said to them: “It is
not for you to know the times or seasons, which
the Father has fixed by His own authority. But
you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has
come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses
in Jerusalem and in all Judæa and Samaria, and
to the ends of the earth.”
Gospel of Pascha (Easter)
The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to
Saint John (1:1-17)
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word
was with God, and the Word was God. He was in
the beginning with God; all things were made
through Him, and without Him was not anything
made that was made. In Him was life, and the
life was the light of men. The light shines in the
darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
There was a man sent from God, whose name
was John. He came for testimony, to bear
witness to the light, that all might believe
through him. He was not the light, but came to
bear witness to the light. The true light that
enlightens every man was coming into the
world. He was in the world, and the world was
made through Him, yet the world knew Him not.
He came to His own home, and His own people
received Him not. But to all who received Him,
who believed in His Name, He gave power to
become children of God; who were born, not of
blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will
of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh
and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we
have beheld His glory, glory as of the only Son

The Feast of feasts; Great and Holy Pascha: 5 May, 2013
“This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it!”
My dear brothers and sisters in the Lord: Christ is risen!
Today we celebrate the “Feast of feasts,” which is the Resurrection of our Lord, Jesus
Christ. This Feast ranks above other feasts because they (Christmas, Theophany, the
Transfiguration, etc.) all took place in order that this Great Feast take place. This is the Feast
that celebrates Christ’s victory over death, which is significant because it means that we have
been freed from death. When we pass from this world, we do not go to Hades as our
ancestors in the Old Testament did. St Paul reminds us that “As many of us as were baptized
into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death. We were buried therefore with Him through
baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father,
even so we also should walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:3-4).
Christ rose from the dead, therefore “be anxious for nothing” (Philippians 4:6). To
the acts of terror we see throughout the world, we say “Christ is risen!” When our loved
ones pass from this life to the next before us, we say “Christ is risen!” When the weather
patterns change and cause destruction through floods, earthquakes, blizzards, fires,
hurricanes, and whatever else may come, we say “Christ is risen!” When our homeland is
overtaken and we are forced to move out and build new lives, we remember the hymn of
Pascha (Easter), which says, “Shine, shine O New Jerusalem!” This New Jerusalem is our
destination city, the true “City of Peace,” God’s Heavenly Kingdom, where on this feast,
Christ has gone before us to prepare a place for us in His Father’s mansion (cf. John 14:1-3).
May this Feast bring you great peace from the Prince of Peace, our God, who became
incarnate taking on the form of a servant, and dying out of His great love for us, knowing that
there is a great reward awaiting us when we pass from this life. “Let us embrace one
another. Let us say: ‘Brethren,’ even to them that hate us, let us forgive all things on the
Resurrection, and thus let us cry out: Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by
death, And on those in the tombs bestowing life.”
Your Father in Christ,

Theology in Real Life
(5/5/2013) By Subdeacon Joseph Hazar
On the New Passover
Great and Holy Pascha
Christ is risen! Truly He is risen! In the Holy Orthodox Church, we refer to the Resurrection of
our Lord Jesus Christ as Pascha, which means “Passover”, rather than Easter, which is a Pagan name.
Christ’s Resurrection is the New Pascha, which fulfills and replaces the old Jewish Passover, which makes
sense when we remember Christ’s words: “‘Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the
prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfill them’” (Matthew 5:17).
The first Passover took place when Moses was given instructions by God to have each Hebrew
family sacrifice a lamb and wipe its blood above their doors in order that the plague that God was going
to send to destroy the first-born child of all of the Egyptians would “pass-over” the homes of the Jews.
Furthermore, the Jews eat Matzah, a flat bread that has no leaven and is not permitted to rise, on their
feast of Passover to remind them that their ancestors left Egypt in haste and there was no time for the
bread to rise.
The plague that God sent to the Egyptians’ firstborns’ was death. The Jewish Passover kept the
Hebrew children safe from death. This Hebrew Feast comes from the Book of Exodus, which we as
Christians fully believe in. Why then do we not follow the same customs as the Jews? It is because the
Jewish Passover was a type or prophecy of the true Passover which was to come. Christ fulfilled the old
Passover with His own Passover, so we only celebrate the New Pascha.
The blood of the lamb was used to protect the Hebrews from death. In the same way, the blood
of Christ, who is the “Lamb of God” (John 1:29), is shed once and for all to protect us from death; but
not the inevitable death which marks the end of our earthly life. It is a saving from the death that
comes after our earthly death.
Before Christ died for us, all people both good and evil, went to the same place; Hades. Christ
was fully God and fully man in order for His victory over death to take place. God is immortal, so how
could He die? Man is mortal, so how can he defeat death? When the two came together inseparably,
God was able to descend to Hades through death, and conquered death once and for all so that no one
would ever have to die again. He became the last and ultimate sacrifice. Because He died, we no longer
have to.
If we are prepared, we should no longer be afraid of death, meaning leaving this world. Christ
says, “‘I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it
bears much fruit’” (John 12:24). Our death then becomes a vehicle to take us to our resurrection, as the
Cross was for Christ.
Christ shed his blood as a free gift for us. What a shame it would be if we rejected this great gift
by living a life of debauchery, laziness, wickedness, and refusing to forgive! Christ asks us “‘What will it
profit a man, if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life?’” (Matthew 16:26).
Let us forget the ways of the world in order to be unified with Christ, the All-powerful, who rose
from the dead, so that we too might be victorious over death. This is the only way to be with God and
to be reunited with our loved ones once we leave this earth. Let us rejoice that we never have to die
and cry out, “Christ is risen!”
