SUPERINTENDENT’S UPDATE / COMMENTS
Mrs. Kriss thanked the members of the Board who were able to join in the tour of the facilities. The day began by
greeting the new teachers to our district. The Board and central office then touring all facilities to assure readiness

for students and staff. She also publicly thanked Building and Grounds and Maintenance Departments who have
done a phenomenal job with modifications and improvements to our facilities.
Mrs. Kriss also welcomed our new teachers. They will have two full days of professional development to help
prepare for students.
Mrs. Kriss informed the Board and the public that the district received $264,536 for the education of students who
lived in the facility on Moreland during the 2013/14 school year. The District did follow through to secure funding
from the county and will continue to do so.
Mrs. Kriss recommended that the Board hire additional teachers at the elementary level to align to class size
guidelines pre 2008. These guidelines were altered in response to reduction in state aid due to the Gap Elimination
Adjustment and other fiscal constraints. The return means that K-3 class size cap would be 25; Grades 4-5 cap
would be 28. As of today’s enrollment 1st grade at each elementary school will break to an additional section;
Bretton Woods 3rd grade will break; and Pines 5th grade will break. These recommendations have come after
careful review by the Superintendent and the central office team of financial implications, staffing and facility
review. As a reminder to those who were not on the Board last year, there was an increase in state aid and the
Board chose to put this money towards such a breakage in class size. Superintendent Kriss also recommended that
the Board take time to look at the class size issue during the course of this year in order to formulate a position for
the following school year. The new class size average for all K-5 classes is 23.06.
Mrs. Kriss concluded by extending a big thank you to Michele Rothfeld, who retires effective Friday, for her many
devoted and wonderful years of service to our kids.
Questions by Board:
 Clarification as to class size
 Thanks to administration for making this happen.
 Questions regarding co-teaching and mainstream students.
QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS REGARDING TONIGHT’S AGENDA ONLY
Members of the public who desire to address the board on any topic which is on tonight’s agenda are welcome to do so at this time. Speakers are requested to limit
their remarks to not more than three minutes, to appoint a spokesperson if the concern is a group concern, and to supplement verbal presentations with written
reports, if necessary or desired. Twenty minutes are being scheduled for this portion of tonight’s agenda.
 Thank you from community members to the administration and Board for all their hard work as they
feel this will make the classroom more manageable for the teachers and a safer environment for the
students.

NEW BUSINESS

Mrs. Mass commented that although she was not able to take on any committees she did have the

possible, to attend one of these ceremonies.


flags were disposed of.


averages and affect opt-out movement had on scores.
