The Assurance of the Resurrection
Many people believe that the resurrection of Jesus from the dead is just
a fairy tale. But this belief in itself is based on a myth.. This myth is that
the Bible records just a few appearances to a very small band of men.
But the reality is that Jesus made a number of appearances to a number
of people over a forty day period. He appeared to the twelve disciples
Several times. He also appeared to Mary Magdalene, to
Peter and to his brother James. In First Corinthians 15 we learn that he once appeared to five-hundred people
at a single event. He appeared to the two less famous disciples walking on the road to Emmaus. There were
appearances in Jerusalem and also in Galilee. Jesus knew the importance of convincing his followers that he
was the risen Lord. Without their firm conviction of his Lordship the faith would be lost.
What is perhaps most poignant is that these followers who saw Jesus were so convinced of having seen the risen Lord after the crucifixion that they were willing to die for their belief. Hundreds died attesting to having
seen something divine and truly extraordinary. They testified to Christ's lordship. It is this testimony that
encourages our faith. It is not a faith based on myth, legends, or fairy tales. It is faith that is based on the
credible witness of intelligent and faithful men and women, the very first followers of The Way, that gave their
lives so that we might know the truth.
OMG Strings
Music historians refer to the influx of bands such as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones in the 1960's as the
'British Invasion.' Well, we here at Zion are experiencing a 'Banjo invasion.' The OMG Strings hit it big with
their debut performance at the Shrove Tuesday pancake meal on Tuesday, Feb. 9th. This picture is the infamous cast of eight musicians who deliberately played after people ate so as not to ruin anyone's appetite. (There are two more in the group who were unable to make the performance.) Look closely and see if
you can compare the faces with mug shots from America's Most Wanted. If so, contact the authorities, you
may get a reward.
From The Music Director Rhondda Nunes
From the desk of the Music director:
Hello everyone, I’m very pleased to tell you all about an upcoming concert here at
Zion Lutheran that will be happening in April for you all to put on your calendar.
I'm forming a Zion Lutheran Composer club that will be tentatively putting on concerts
in the spring and Fall. Our first concert will be on April 17th at 4 pm and will feature
works by Pacific's Eric Waldon, Jeff Crawford, Zion Lutheran's Pastor Rick Alpers,
Stockton's own Max Simoncic ( my first composition professor); and myself. The repertoire will
be incredibly varied ranging from classical, film score music. electronica gospel and also genres and
new sounds that may still need to be defined. Who knows...maybe at this concert we may see the
birth of a new musical genre in and of itself!
The composers are all hard at work on their pieces now and the compositions are still being newly
written even as I type this. One thing that will also be unique about this concert is that many of the
wonderful musicians participating audiences have seen from the Zion Chamber Orchestra concerts
and also in Sunday morning service here at Zion. We'll be pleased to welcome Celtic musicians Elizabeth and Abraham McCarty, soprano Kitty Taisho, baritone Eric Waldon singing his
own composition "Bright Light.s" We'll also be featuring cellist Eric Urbina, violinist Geremie Rebustillo, violinist and electric guitarist Chris Hunefield, French horn and conductor of the Zion
Chamber Paul Kimball, drummer Steve Douville, pianist Kay Nicholas and many others still to be
added. You won't want to miss this special treat and we look forward to seeing you here at Zion one
of your special destinations for the arts and music here in Stockton.

Mission & Outreach
"We Care" Ministry.
The Explorer's club made 14 Valentines,
and Shirley baked cookies, so Joyce, Esther, Shirley and I
delivered them to 12 different homes. Did a short visit to
the ones that we found at home, and hung the Valentines
on their door if they were not at home. I hope they enjoyed our visit as much as we did, visiting them. God
Bless.
To our Zion Family:
Thank you for all of your support. We can’t explain how grateful we truly
are for all your love and prayers. Your participation in our Fathers memorial
service and reception and everything you have done is greatly
appreciated….
We love you so much!
God bless Mandy & Justine
Dear Friends at Zion,
We want to add a special note of love and thanks to that from the girls. We
too are so grateful for all of you prayers and support during this time of
transition. We knew from where we get our strength, and we continuously
feel His presence through the love of all of you.

FOR THE SAKE OF ART
Adult art class scheduled for March
March’s topic for the adult art class was awaiting confirmation from a potential guest artist.

or still life.
The class will be held March 5 from 10 a.m. to noon in Grace Hall. The class is open to all
adult and teens. All materials are supplied by the For the Sake of Art program.
Adult art classes will continue on the first Saturday morning of each month through May.

MINISTRY PROFILE
Communications involved in many tasks
(This is the first of a continuing series on various ministries active at Zion.)
The Sunday worship slides; the projected announcements; the website; Facebook.
These are just some of the tasks that keeps members of the Communications Ministry Team busy each
month.
Team leader is Frank Whitney, but he is quick to stress that Communications is a team effort at Zion. Here is
how!
WORSHIP SLIDES: Frank and Ana Landa alternate months “building” the worship slides used each Sunday
in worship. Most of the hymns and readings are already filed in the electronic database used by the projection
program. Occasionally a new song needs to be inputted in the database. Operation of the sound/projection
booth alternates each month between Ana and Traci Carr. Chris DeRoos serves as a backup for both operating
and creating the worship slides.
SUNDAY ANNOUNCEMENTS: The weekly slide show that greets worshipers entering the sanctuary provide information on programs and event dates at Zion. All ministries are encouraged to provide Frank information to be projected. He asks for a minimum of two to three weeks lead time so the announcement can run
for two or three weeks.
WEBSITE: The church’s website—zlcstockton.org—was created by Kristen Dyke and is maintained by the
Communications Ministry Team. Stephanie Hensley has joined the team and is now in the process of reworking
some of the existing pages as well as creating new ones. These changes should start showing up sometime this
month once team members review and sign off. One indication that Zion website is being visited in the January
Chamber Orchestra Festival series. Half of the tickets sold for the three concerts were purchased through the
website this year.
FACEBOOK: Having a website is one thing, driving traffic to the site is another matter. Facebook helps with
that by posting announcements or news on Zion’s Facebook page—facebook.com/zlcstockton. A link to the
website is included in each Facebook posting.
EMAIL: Recently added to the communications arsenal is Constant Contact, an online service that allows
group emailing. Members and friends of Zion who have provided the church an email address will now receive
regular mailings from the church with reminders on program dates and times. Again, all ministries who want to
get information out to the congregation are encouraged to submit messages to Frank for emailing.
NEWSLETTER: While the newsletter is compiled, printed and mailed by Genevieve in the church office,
much of the information is collected and written by the Communications Ministry. Several members contribute
photographs, as well. One project the ministry team will undertake in coming months is a redesign of the newsletter. The goals is to make the newsletter friendly for emailing as well as posting on the website.
ADVERTISING: Zion at certain times during the year purchases advertising space in The Record. The ads
primarily announce worship hours for holydays such as Easter and Christmas. News releases also are generated
by Communications to promote programs such as For the Sake of Art or special musical offerings that draw
from the larger community.
There are other tasks handled by Communications. Photography, brochures, and even the redesign of Zion’s
logo are just a few. Any member wanting to join this ministry team should contact Frank Whitney (477-3515 or
[email protected]).
