Product Overview
should be done only after all of the application requirements
are carefully considered. The following are some guidelines
that can be used to make the tubing selection process easier
and more accurate.
There are three thermoplastic tubing compounds used for
the majority of pneumatic lines: Nylon, Polyethylene and
Polyurethane. All three offer distinct advantages over the
other two. Selecting the one that best fits a particular job
Media
Material that will be passing through the tubing, or even
coming into contact with it externally, must also be considered. Certain chemicals can have an adverse effect (swelling,
deterioration, etc.) on tubing compounds, so
it is important to select a tubing material that is compatible
with the media being used.
Consult our “Chemical Resistance Chart” on pages 48 and
49 to use as a guide to determine tubing compatibility with
various chemicals and materials. Since temperature and the
mixing of chemicals has a very definite effect on the tubing’s resistance, we strongly recommend testing under
actual application conditions to best determine the most
suitable choice.
Flexibility / Kink Resistance
All thermoplastic tubing is flexible to a certain degree, but
they are not all equally as flexible. In applications requiring a
small bend radius or where there is a lot of motion, a more

Resistance

flexible tubing may be required. For stationary applications
where movement is minimal or a higher working pressure is
needed, a more rigid tubing would most likely be desired.

Flow
The amount of pressurized air that must be transported
to the pneumatically operated mechanism is another
criteria that must be taken into consideration when selecting tubing. As a result, the tubing must be properly sized to
do its job effectively. A good rule of thumb is
to use tubing that will provide flow that exceeds the
requirement of the components (actuators, valves,
cylinders, etc.) that are in the circuit.
The type of fitting being used should also be taken into
account when flow requirements are being determined.
Since Barb Fittings are installed inside the tubing, they
present a restriction to the flow passage. Push-To-Connect
Fittings, on the other hand, grip the outside of the tubing
so they offer no flow restrictions. This can often result in
the use of smaller diameter tubing, which means space
and cost savings.
Refer to the chart on the bottom of page 6 for a flow rate
comparison between Nylon and Polyurethane tubing.
Note: For related flow information, please see the “A Final
Thought” section at the bottom of page 6.
Working Pressure
Working pressure is an important criterion (and often the first
considered) in the tubing selection process. The working pressure of tubing is derived from its burst pressure at what
is considered ambient or “normal room temperature”, about
68ºF (20ºC), and then building in a “safety factor”.
Maximum working pressure of a tube is the safe pressure rating that takes all operational criteria into consideration.
Some of the more important operational criteria that
must be considered when specifying working pressure
are excessive bending, flexing, operational fatigue,
tolerances and manufacturing variables. Nycoil uses only
the highest-grade base polymers along with rigid control
standards during and after the manufacturing process to
yield consistent tubing quality that is never compromised.

Nylon Tubing:
160 PSI – 500 PSI (11 BAR – 35 BAR)
Polyethylene Tubing: 130 PSI – 200 PSI (9 BAR – 13 BAR)
Polyurethane Tubing: 125 PSI – 200 PSI (8.5 BAR – 14 BAR)
Working Temperature
This is a temperature range for which a particular tubing
can effectively be used. When considering temperature,
it should be remembered that the higher the temperature
is, the lower the burst (and working) pressure will be.
Working
Temperature

Since “working pressures” are calculated at ambient temperature, that figure will be reduced significantly
as the temperature approaches the high end of the
working temperature range.

Fitting Type
The three most common tubing fittings are Push-To-Connect,
Compression and Hose Barb. There are distinct advantages
and disadvantages (retention, flow, cost, etc.) for each of
these fittings. Unfortunately, not all of these fittings can be
Fitting / Tubing
Compatibility
used with each tubing material, so it is important to know
the type of fitting being used on an application before a final
tubing selection is made.
Nylon Tubing:
Push-To-Connect, Compression and Hose Barb Fittings
Polyethylene Tubing: Push-To-Connect, Compression and Hose Barb Fittings
Polyurethane Tubing: Push-To-Connect and Hose Barb Fittings
Cost
As with anything that is purchased, cost must be considered
before a final decision can be made. If two or more tubing
Cost
Breakdown
materials adequately satisfy an application’s requirements,
cost could become the deciding factor.
Nylon Tubing:
Moderate
Polyethylene Tubing: Least Expensive
Polyurethane Tubing: Most Expensive
A Final Thought
Even after all of the above factors are considered, selecting
the tubing material that best suits a particular application
can still often be difficult. Nylon will always be a “safe”
choice because of its good chemical resistance, compatibility
with all types of fittings (Push-To-Connect, Compression
and Hose Barb) and reliability at higher temperatures.
The overall impact of Nylon’s higher working pressure
versus Polyurethane is often overlooked. Many pneumatic circuits call for 1/4" outside diameter tubing. As a result,
1/4" x .125" (.0625" wall thickness) Polyurethane is a very popular tubing choice. The working pressure for this tubing
is approximately 267 PSI.
But here’s the Nylon advantage that’s often overlooked –
flow. Since the 1/4" outside diameter Nylon tubing has an
inside diameter of .180" versus .125" for the 1/4" outside diameter Polyurethane tubing, that gives Nylon a flow passage
nearly forty-five percent greater than Polyurethane. If flow is
a major concern, a larger size tubing must be used
if Polyurethane is selected. In addition to higher costs, this
also adds bulk to the equipment.
This is a very important consideration to keep in mind when
designing pneumatic circuits.
On the other hand, 1/4" outside diameter Nylon tubing only
requires a .035" wall with a .180" inside diameter in order
to provide a working pressure of about 333 PSI. This is a
twenty-five percent (25%) higher working pressure
than Polyurethane, which can be the deciding factor
for many applications.

Pneumatic Tubing
Nylon
Nylon tubing is a popular choice for low pressure pneumatic
applications because of its combination of flexibility and
toughness. Nycoil uses a heat and light stabilized, very flexible high grade Nylon 12 compound that yields the finest
quality tubing available. Some of the qualities of tubing
extruded from Nylon 12 raw material are good chemical
resistance, low water absorption and superior dimensional
stability. Nylon is the most recommended tubing material
for all types of pneumatic circuits.
A circuit designer could never get into trouble using Nylon
tubing for pneumatic circuits. Due to its physical properties,
Nylon is the number one choice for reliable connections
with all types of fittings. Nylon retains its performance
integrity in elevated temperatures and generally, because of
it’s higher pressure and temperature characteristics, Nylon
will have a greater flow passage than composite tubing
made from other material with the same outside diameter.
These factors should never be overlooked when designing
pneumatic circuits.

Polyethylene
Polyethylene is the most commonly used tubing due to its
flexibility, wide range of chemical resistance and lower cost.
Nycoil uses high quality Linear Low Density Polyethylene material
(LLDPE) that conforms to Food and Drug Administration 21 CFR
177.1520 C where contact with food is an issue (applies to all colors).
LLDPE has a much higher resistance to stress cracking as compared
to other Polyethylene compounds. It is also chemically inert, mean-
ing it forms a good barrier against moisture, vapors and
gases – minimizing the possibility of leaks or contamination.
Where prolonged exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet (UV) light
is a concern, black tubing is recommended for extended life.

Pneumatic Tubing
Polyurethane
Polyurethane tubing is usually the best choice for applications requiring extensive flexing, a small bend radius or where kinking
can be a problem. Nycoil uses ether base (polytetra-methylene
glycol ether) raw material because of its hydrolytic resistance (will
not break down or be affected in any way by moisture). Being a naturally rubbery compound, it requires no plasticizers that can
leach out over time. This compound also offers superior resistance
to grease, oils, fuels and abrasion, making it suitable for a wide variety of applications.
Due to its lower burst and temperature characteristics, the uses
for Polyurethane is best recommended on applications where the
flow rate is not critical and temperature elevation of the tubing
is not a factor. When using Polyurethane tubing in most pneumatic
systems, one size larger tube is often required in order to meet the
necessary flow criteria.
As a result, applications should be limited to areas of consistent low
temperatures and where high and continued flexibility is essential.
A typical example of this would be a “pick and place” operation.
Since Nycoil “Poly-Matic” Push-To-Connect Fittings have the highest gripping “force” as compared to other brands, it is assured that
our tubing will always work with our fittings. However, when using
Push-To-Connect Fittings from other manufacturers with
any brand of Polyurethane tubing, testing for retention reliability
is strongly recommended. Further, we recommend using only
Polyurethane tubing made from 95A Durometer hardness compound
with Push-To-Connect Fittings. In addition, compression type fittings
should never be used with Polyurethane tubing of any hardness.
Temperature Range: -40°F to +165°F (-40°C to +75°C)
95A Durometer Polyurethane Tubing
Although 95A Durometer is the hardest compound used for
Polyurethane tubing, it is still more flexible and has a smaller bend
radius (without kinking) than most other plastic tubing. Produced
from ether base (polytetra-methylene glycol ether) raw material
assures resistance to moisture, fungus, abrasion and a broad range
of chemicals making it a popular choice for many applications.
A wide selection of colors makes it adaptable to the functional and
aesthetic requirements of most pneumatic circuits and equipment.
95A Durometer Polyurethane Tubing can be used with most
brands of Push-To-Connect or Hose Barb Fittings.

Pneumatic Tubing
85A Durometer Polyurethane Tubing
NEW!
Due to its extreme flexibility and tight bend radius, 85A Durometer
Polyurethane Tubing is ideal for small control circuits or applications
requiring repetitive flexing. Just as we do with our 95A Durometer
Polyurethane Tubing, Nycoil uses ether base raw material for our
85A Durometer Polyurethane Tubing to assure superior moisture,
fungus and abrasion resistance. Although its chemical compatibility
is similar to that of 95A Durometer Polyurethane, the burst pressure
of 85A Durometer Polyurethane is significantly lower, so this
requirement must be carefully considered before a final tubing selection is made.
NOTE: 85A Durometer Polyurethane Tubing Should Only
Be Used With Barbed Fittings.

EZ-Strip and Skip-Bond Tubing
EZ-Strip and Skip-Bond
NEW!
Nycoil offers Bonded Tubing in Polyurethane and Nylon 12.
Due to the differences in the properties of these two materials,
each is bonded in a different manner.
Polyurethane uses our EZ-Strip process, which is a continuous
bond along the entire length of the tubes. Bonded Polyurethane
is easily strippable, meaning the tubes can be pulled apart without
compromising their dimensional integrity. Maintaining perfect
“roundness” is essential for a secure and leak free fitting connection.
Since it is not easily strippable material, Nylon 12 uses our
Skip-Bond process of intermittently bonding the tubes that leaves
sections “unbonded” for fitting installation. Even though the tubes
are not continuously bonded, they will hold securely together
for easy routing.
10
164 Pointe South Drive
Randleman, NC 27317
EZ-Strip and Skip-Bond also available as Precision Coils. Please
refer to our Precision Mini-Coils on page 12. Multi tube Mini-Coils
have the same Coil O.D. and material length as standard Mini-Coils.
To order multi tube Mini-Coils, select the coil from page 12, add the
“B” prefix to the selected part number and then replace the color
code suffix with the number of tubes required.
Example: B48132 is a 5/32" O.D. PU Mini-Coil with Clear and
Black twin tubes.
We have standard Coils in stock for 2, 3 and 4 tubes. Color
sequence is the same as the tubes specified on the next page.

Features and Benefits
Quick Installation: Running a single strip of bonded tubing
is much faster than running multiple tubes individually —
SAVES TIME & MONEY!
Visible Traceability: Color-coded bonded tubes make routing
a circuit less complicated and easier to follow — SIMPLIFIES
TROUBLESHOOTING & CUTS COSTS!
Space Economy: Bonded tubes provide a more precise and
consistent dimension than bundles, wraps or channels —
ALLOWS COMPACT CIRCUITS!
Eliminates Clutter: Bonded tubing will eliminate tangled and
sloppy tubing runs — ENHANCES THE APPEARANCE OF THE
CIRCUIT & EQUIPMENT!

As a full service tubing extruder, Nycoil can supply longer continuous (no splices) lengths than
our “standard” offerings as shown in this catalog. For example, we can supply in excess of
25,000 continuous feet of small diameter tubing on our largest reels. In addition, we will extrude
“custom” size (inside and outside diameter) tubing, specific colors, provide special cut lengths or
bond any size tubing in any color sequence to meet your requirements. Give us a call with your
specifications for a quotation!

Poly-Matic Nickel Plated Brass “Push-In” Tube Fittings
Fractional Inch size tubing & NPT threads
Add the benefits of the Poly-Matic gripping teeth to your
molded, forged, cast or machined components and your
fluid connections. Permanently installed Cartridges allow
closer spacing and lower profiles in Plastic, Brass, Anodized
Aluminum, Steel and other metals.
Poly-Matic Cartridges are available in 2 configurations:
Encapsulated Cartridges are supplied fully assembled, ready
for installation. The Encapsulated Cartridge contains the
seal fully enclosed in the Cartridge Body and is suitable for
Automated Assembly. The installation cavity is one single
diameter. For use in Brass, Anodized Aluminum, Steel and
other metals, an external “O” Ring can be furnished.
Standard Cartridges are shipped with the sealing “O” Ring
separate. The installation cavity requires steps to locate and
support the “O” Ring. Suitable for use with Plastics, Brass,
Anodized Aluminum, Steel and other metals.

EXCLUSIVE! Our “Conversion” Fittings allow you to use Fractional
Inch size tubing for connections having BSPT threads!
Poly-Matic Nickel Plated Brass “Push-In” Tube Fittings
®
Our Poly-Matic Conversion Fittings provide a quick and
convenient way to connect fractional inch tubing to
machinery or equipment having BSPT threads. This eliminates
the need to use BSPT to NPT conversion fittings or being
limited to using metric size tubing. To make them easy to
identify, these Conversion Fittings have red release collars
indicating they are to be used with fractional inch tubing
and notches on the hex corners signifying BSPT threads.

“Working Temperature” is the range at which a particular tubing material can
be effectively used. Before tubing material can be properly selected, the Working
Temperature should be known. Here are the Working Temperature ranges for
the three (3) most common tubing materials: Nylon Tubing: -40ºF to +200ºF
(-40ºC to +93ºC), Polyethylene Tubing: -100ºF to +175ºF (-73ºC to +79.5ºC),
Polyurethane Tubing: -40ºF to +165ºF (-40ºC to +74ºC).

Compact Design: requires very little space, allowing

Ease Of Installation: the internal hex allows easy
installation of straight fittings even in hard to reach places
Lightweight: composite glass reinforced Nylon body
keeps the fitting weight to a minimum – won’t interfere
with movement of devices and makes it easy to handle
Wide Selection: body configurations for most tubing
sizes (1/8" – 1/2" and 4mm – 14mm diameters) to meet
all application requirements are available with NPT,
BSPT, BSPP and metric connections
Ease Of Operation: connecting and disconnecting is quick
and easy – these operations can be done time and time
again without replacing any parts or components
Connecting: simply push the tubing into the fitting
until it “bottoms” – holding and sealing occurs instantly
Disconnecting: depress the manual release button while
pulling the tubing to release it from the fittings grip

Due to its higher working pressure, Nylon Tubing with a smaller outside diameter and
better flow characteristics than Polyurethane Tubing can be used in many applications.
This results in saving costs as well as space. See page 6 for a complete explanation.

Many Nylon compounds absorb moisture that can change the tubing’s dimensions
and lessen its strength, leading to premature failure. Nycoil uses only the high quality
Nylon 12 compound because of its low moisture absorption characteristics, making it
the best choice for most tubing applications.

Nylon and Nickel Plated Brass Body
Most hoses (Neoprene, Rubber, Thermoplastic, Nitrile, EPDM, etc.) consist of an inner
tube, braiding and an outer cover that are in some way attached together. During
normal use, these three layers can become separated and compromise the integrity
of the hose. As a result, hose manufacturers generally use a 4:1 safety factor when
calculating the working pressure of their hose. Tubing (Nylon, Polyethylene,
Polyurethane, etc.), on the other hand, is extruded as a single piece and does not have
multiple layers that can break down and weaken over time. This has allowed a 3:1
safety factor to become the standard for establishing the working pressure of tubing.

NOTE: These caps cannot be used with composite, “P” or type “Z” fittings.
Polyurethane Tubing will expand when exposed to prolonged temperatures over 80ºF
and, due to its memory, may not contract fully back to its original dimensions when
cooled. This could cause a problem reconnecting the tubing and fitting. An alternative
tubing material with more dimensional stability, such as Nylon, should be considered
for applications involving exposure to heat.

Spiral Wrap is Polyethylene Tubing that is specially cut to
expand and contain multiple runs of small diameter tubing
or wiring neat and tangle free. Spiral Wrap also acts as a
protective jacket to prevent abrasion or damage from other
sources in the surrounding area. The special angled cut of
the tubing is rounded so that it can be easily and safely
wrapped around a bundle of tubes or wires without
cutting the contents. Spiral Wrap is available with a 1/4" outside diameter to accommodate 3/16" to 2" bundles and with a
1/2" outside diameter for 3/8" to 4" bundles.
Colors are Natural and Black (UV Resistant).

Rugged construction and ergonomic design combine to permit cutting up to 3/4"
tubing or hose with minimum effort
Corrosion resistant hardened steel blade assures straight, crisp cuts for optimum
fitting connection
Replacement blades can be installed in seconds using only a screwdriver
Provision for leash attachment conveniently located on both sides of the handle –
will not interfere with cutter operation
