REPORT TO OUR MEMBERS
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
As we celebrate yet another year of quality programming at WWFM,
it is gratifying to see a continuation of the progress and innovation
that has made the station a favorite for more than a generation.
As host to WWFM, Mercer County Community College has seen the
station grow from humble beginnings to become the only 24-hour
classical music station in the State of New Jersey. And now, through
last year’s expansion into the Philadelphia and New York markets,
lovers of the world’s greatest music from Connecticut to Delaware and
beyond can enjoy quality classical music programming originating on
our campus in Mercer County.
At the same time, the past year has seen the expansion of many new,
exciting partnerships that will expand the range of musical offerings
listeners can enjoy, including such esteemed organizations as The
Curtis Institute, the 92nd Street Y, the Manhattan School of Music,
Columbia University, Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, Le Poisson
Rouge, Trinity-Wall Street and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s. This has
enabled WWFM to deliver unique, top-level performances, with the
promise of more in the year ahead.
It goes without saying that none of this would be possible without
the generous support of the community, which was celebrated last
year with a special Pirates of Penzance performance at the college’s
Kelsey Theatre, and the introduction of the “Continuo Circle” to
recognize WWFM donors who commit an annual gift of $1,000.
We appreciate all of our supporters who have made quality music
programming a priority, and through their generosity, made it
possible.
I would also like to thank and congratulate the dedicated staff of
WWFM, as it is their commitment to music, the music that has served
as a soundtrack to all of human history, that has effectively preserved
it for yet another generation. With your continued support, WWFM
will continue to fulfill that important mission for generations to come.

What a year! The progress at
The Classical Network has been
unmistakable, even breathtaking.
In fact, it is safe to call 2012
a “watershed year” for WWFM.
No single event made it that, but
the sum of all the parts made it a
year to remember.
None of that progress would have been
possible without you as a member. You
helped make every small step possible.

Every concert – whether from NYC, Philadelphia, Cape May,
or the Lehigh Valley – happened because you believed in what
could be done. The many small improvements that added up to
better reliability, better sound, and more unique programming –
it was all possible because of you.
As we look toward the future, we know that none of the progress
from those many small steps can be maintained without your
continued support and caring. The music will continue as long
as you keep caring. The concerts that cannot be heard anywhere
else will continue to be broadcast on The Classical Network
because you make them possible.
What’s possible for the future of classical music and The Classical
Network? Anything you support. If you care enough, anything is
possible.

CELEBRATING OUR VIBRANT
MUSICAL COMMUNITY
This past year at The Classical Network is probably best defined,
as always, by the music we brought you. Through an unprecedented
network of partnerships, we brought you concerts by extraordinary
ensembles: The Princeton Symphony Orchestra, Concordia Chamber
Players, Lenape Chamber Ensemble, New Jersey Cantors Ensemble
(with guest soloist Alberto Mizrahi), Astral Artists, Guild for Early
Music, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Philadelphia Chamber Music Society,
Chamber Music Society of Bethlehem, the Bach Choir of Bethlehem,
Tempesta di Mare, Piffaro, Dolce Suono Ensemble, the American
Composers Orchestra, and the Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia.
We also broadcast performances from some great venues and
festivals in our broadcast region, including concerts from The Institute
for Advanced Study, the SONC Festival in New York, the Austrian
Cultural Forum in New York, the Princeton Festival, Gothic Early
Music Scene in New York, Copland House, the Raritan River Music
Festival, Le Poisson Rouge, St Paul’s Chapel/Trinity Wall Street,
Williams Center for the Arts at Lafayette College, Symphony Space,
the Freehold Downtown Music Series and the Princeton University
Chapel. Outstanding concerts, broadcast right into your home.
Finally, we laid the groundwork for weekly series of performances
of student recitals from The Curtis Institute of Music (Curtis Calls)
and concerts from the 92nd Street Y – with a roster of world-class
classical artists.
These concerts came to you live
and pre-recorded, morning,
afternoon and evening! And
we continued to bring you great
programs each week, introducing
Strictly Vinyl and The Lyric Stage.
As we seek to be more engaged
in the broader arts community,
we introduced A Tempo, a cultural
affairs show designed to take you
inside the present-day economic,
cultural and technological
challenges and opportunities

facing the performing arts, as well as the state of music education
in our schools. If you tuned in this past year, you heard about
some of the latest developments from Tanglewood Music Festival,
American Repertory Ballet, the New England Conservatory, The
New York Philharmonic, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra,
cultural commentator Norman Lebrecht and Opera America, to
name just a few.
All of these programs were made possible thanks to our inspired
hosts, whose passion brings you entertainment, knowledge and
a greater appreciation for the arts as a whole.
And finally, we introduced our Arts Calendar, an online list of local
cultural events so you can further explore your love of music and the
arts by attending concerts and exhibits in person and supporting the
rich diversity of arts organizations in the region.

JazzOn2 is heading into its fifth year of broadcasting jazz “again”
on WWFM and related frequencies. We continue our work to maintain the rich jazz heritage of Trenton, New Jersey, and this region.
Built on a community radio platform, JazzOn2 is staffed by a great
group of volunteers; professional musicians and jazz aficionados who
love to share their love of America’s Classic Music. Our volunteers
reflect both the community and the wide variance in jazz and blues
musical tastes.
Twenty-eight members of the community volunteer their time, and
musical acumen, to bring our listeners a marvelous mixture of jazz,
blues, and gospel; and public affairs programming. The musical
tastes of our hosts covers the genre from classic to contemporary
jazz, blues and rhythm and improvisatory music from around the
globe.
Three of our volunteers work as producers and help to bring our
programs to fruition. Two of these volunteer producers started out
as interns in the Mercer County Community College Radio/TV
curriculum, and continued with JazzOn2 after graduation.
WWFM supports student advancement from all area colleges with
internships available at both The Classical Network and JazzOn2.
The JazzOn2 broadcast line-up also includes programming from
National Public Radio and independent, syndicated producers.

take center stage. At The Classical
Network, we’re bringing you tomorrow’s music stars… today.
As part of our mission to nurture the
future of classical music, we launched

The Classical Network also
started You-Tunes, an online
resource for young musicians
and their families. This website
highlights performances and news of youth ensembles in our listening area
and profiles young artists or performing groups in a monthly feature. Young
musicians can also share their experiences and practicing tips with other
students, and parents can find qualified music instructors on our Teachers
Directory.
Throughout the year, we host visits by Boy Scout, Cub Scout and Girl Scout
troops, helping them earn badges and introducing them to the world of radio and classical music. This year, staff members also spent a morning with
area high school students as part of the Mercer County Arts Festival held at

ENSURING ANOTHER 30 YEARS AND BEYOND
You hear it all the time: “This program was made possible in part
by the support of listener-members of The Classical Network.”
It’s such a simple statement, one that might often get lost amid all
the other things that come across our airwaves or in our membership
mailings. But it is truly the bottom line reality of our station: If enough
listeners do not step up and support us financially, there is no future
for The Classical Network – no Distant Mirror, no Piano Matters,
no Dress Circle, and no friendly, familiar voices bringing you great
music every morning, afternoon and night.
So we are always grateful to those of you who support us year-in,
year-out. This past year we were pleased to welcome and recognize a new level of supporters – our Continuo Circle members,
who pledged at least $1,000 for the year to help us celebrate
our 30th Anniversary. We are grateful for the 71 members who
made this commitment and hope to grow this circle as we keep
moving forward.
We also greatly appreciate our Sustaining Members, who now
represent 17% of our membership. Your monthly contributions are
also key to ensuring our ongoing viability. Our goal this year is to
raise this to 30%.
