unveils its new state-of-the-ar t campus, welcomes home
hundreds of courageous individuals and takes guests through a
time machine of history.

“There is a great sense of cohesiveness with all of the staff in one place. There is also a feeling of professionalism that
pervades the agency,” said Ann Polunsky, Florence Crittenton’s Grant Writer.
Additionally, building signage and donor dedications will be mounted to the new buildings in March. One such dedication, is
nearly complete, and can be seen when you enter the dining room, newly named Café Elizabeth, formerly known as the dining
room or cafeteria. Artist Lori Frisbie painted the colorful mural, which shows a lively café scene along a bustling town street.

For more than three months now, a company appropriately named
Thinking Caps has been creating the much-anticipated donor recognition
for the Building New Beginnings Campaign. The days of boring plaques
are over and the days of artwork are here for recognition pieces.
Only small details can be revealed of these rooted figures, these five, six
and seven foot wonders that capture the true meaning of what it means
to give your support and your heart.They glisten and tower and though
cold to the touch are warm with color.

feast kicked off the Second Annual Charles

22, more than 100 society members and
guests joined to support the mission of
Florence Crittenton and to celebrate the
opening of Phase I of the new campus.

After more than six months of research and planning, Florence Crittenton
is shedding its old skin. Esser Design, a local graphic design firm, has
created a new brand for Florence Crittenton, which includes a new
logo, new tag-line, new font and new colors.

with the new look and image,
they are brought to life.”

The new logo represents growth, success and nurturing and is highlighted by rich tones of green, teal and a purple-blue. The new tag line,
Where Hope Comes to Life, fittingly describes a sort of blossoming that
develops into the gift of opportunity.
This exciting change is being implemented in phases, beginning with a
new business system, which includes letterhead, thank you cards etc. The
next phase will include building signage, followed by event materials such
as invitations and finally the website, new brochures and this newsletter.

Power 92 Hosts Holiday Bash
On Friday, December 20, hip-hop radio station, Power 92 hosted a holiday
bash for more than 100 residential girls and school kids. Celebrity DJs,
Da Nutz and Gringo Suave welcomed the
kids to a fun-filled carnival at Florence
Crittenton, complete with bumping sounds
of hip-hop and R&B music, X-Box games,
photo opportunities with DJs and signed
t-shirts. The kids were also treated to a
guest appearance by the Phoenix Mercury’s
Dj, Gringo Suave records screams from Scorch mascot.

But the fun didn’t stop there. A catered
BBQ lunch was next, followed by surprise holiday gifts for everyone. The
wrapped presents were part of a 2-week holiday gift drive the station
promoted through its radio listeners. More than 150 gifts were donated
and presented to the kids after lunch.
A big thank you to Power 92 for their generosity! All the kids had a blast!
Chef Brings Talent to Florence Crittenton
This past couple of months it was hard to miss all of the publicity that
Florence Crittenton’s charming Chef, Ken Uyeda recieved. His unique
story begins at Royal Palms’ T Cook’s where he was most recently the
Garde Manger and his customers included notable celebrities. But this
culinary crafter was looking for something different.

Each year the gifts are
distributed by none other
than, Santa Claus, better
known as Peter Strebe, a
local jewelry store owner.
Every year, Strebe is assisted
by his mother, Bettye Strebe,
who dresses as Mrs. Claus
for the event. Strebe has
volunteered his time as the
jolly ole St. Nick for five years
and says he loves to do it.
“When I began to become successful, my mother
told me ‘For those that much has been given, much
is expected,’” said Strebe.
Additionally, the Auxiliary nominated Peter Strebe for the
Hon Kachina Award, the Valley’s most prestigious volunteer
award. Strebe is one of 20 nominees named by the Luke’s
Men and ABC 15. Congratulations Peter and thank you
for your commitment to our agency and the Auxiliary!

standard. Her leadership has taken
the agency from nearly closing its
doors in 1993, to celebrating its
100-year-mark, to unveiling a
state-of-the art campus in 2003.
In an interview in January,Volhein
revealed what she feels has made
it one of the most successful
agencies in the Valley.

We have always had consistent leadership and stability. We have had a vision and
have driven it relentlessly. You just can’t quit
on that vision. I think our niche with only girls
has also been a valuable component of what
makes Florence Crittenton unique.
When a girl leaves Florence
Crittenton, I typically sit down with her and
talk about her future and what she has
learned at our agency. Once, a girl told
me I changed her life. That meant a lot
and I’ll never forget it. Florence Crittenton
saved her life and a young girl realized
she is important and valuable. Those
experiences are what keep me here.

children and Florence Crittenton girls.

Florence Crittenton has really “arrived,”
and the driving factors behind that are
innovation, quality, passionate people, strong

going to be the model for the way a nonprofit is run. Our leadership will be the

Over a 3-day period, with the help of
several interested television stations, the
entire agency was refurbished. From new
paint and carpet to all new furniture,
Project Pretty put Florence Crittenton
in the community eye.

and fundraising efforts were underway,
the next most important thing was a

It was actually a planned, step by
step process that took ten years. In
1993, Florence Crittenton was in an
emergency situation.
#1: The first thing I did was hire an
accountant. We cut the budget and
took a long hard look at where we
were financially in all of our programs
and services.
#2: Next, we reformatted our programs
after taking an in-depth look at how
well our programs were being accepted
in the community.

Since January, the Board of Directors has been focusing
on the growth of the agency, with its new and expanded
services, including the opening of the Living & Learning
Home and the growth of the residential program and
charter school. In order to support these needs, the board
