Minute to Win It and College Day
By Pandora Grant
On September 24th, at lunch, MDR held a “Minute it Win It” contest for all grades. Students had to
suck up M&M’s with a straw and put them into the cup, and then the person with the most M&M’s in a cup
won for his /her homeroom. Some of the winners were
Javari Hamilton and Kevin Rosco. Cyrina G. said, “I

Mr. Morgan is the new 8th grade algebra/math
teacher. He used to be an engineer but changed fields.
He expects a student to have effort, the desire to do
well, complete all assignments
and homework, and to be
respectful to every one in class
including oneself. He moved here
three years ago. He first came to
the U.S. to see the sights as a
tourist. He loved it so much he
came back to stay for good. He
grew up in the northeast of
England near Scotland. His
hobbies are playing soccer,
reading, going to the gym, and
eating out. His favorite movies
are The Godfather and 1980’s
Arnold Schwarzenegger movies.
His favorite food is sushi. The
thing he likes best about
California is the sunshine and that there is always
something to do here. He shared the following: “I enjoy
working at MDR. We have wonderful teachers and a
beautiful, safe campus for us all to enjoy. We are really
lucky. America is always ‘on the go.’ Where I come
from in England, the pace of life is a lot slower.”
Ms. Morales was born in Bellflower, Ca. She
teaches 8th grade English and Read 180 at MDR.
She attended Cal State Long Beach and earned her
master’s degree from National University. She has
been married for six and a half years.
Log: Where was your first teaching position?
Ms. Morales: Nimitz
Middle School.
Log: What do you like
best about MDR?
Ms. Morales: Its
friendly staff members
and energetic students.
Log: What kind of
music do you like?

Nurse Goldman is the new school nurse. She
keeps track of all the students who come in her office,
so she’ll know if you are
trying to get out of class
or truly ill. This is her
eleventh year as a school
nurse. The worst
sickness she has seen in
a student is un-diagnosed
cancer. She said the
student was sent to a
hospital where the
student got treatment.
While the student was in the hospital, she visited him.
As for hobbies, she has 15 box turtles, some raised
from eggs laid in her backyard, and two cats. She
sings in a choir, likes photography and enjoys traveling.
Her tips for staying healthy are: “Wash your hands
often. Cover coughts and sneezes. Stay home if you
are truly sick, such as with a fever over 100 degrees.”
She expects to see more students walk in her office
each day. Nurse Goldman is a great nurse and is really
kind and we all are lucky to have her here at Marina.
Ms. Nemseva is a student teacher
at Marina. She is from Moldova, a small, poor,
Eastern
European
country sandwiched
between Ukraine and
Romania. The climate is
similar to Washington and
Oregon. The traditional
food is pan-grilled fish
with corn flower pudding.
Ms. Nemseva speaks five
languages. She teaches
sixth grade English.
Before she taught here,
she taught at Santa Monica High School for ninth
grade. Ms. Nemseva has been here since 1997. She
went to Los Angeles High, and then she got her
bachelor’s degree at UCLA. Later in her teaching
career, she wants to teach foreign languages like
Russian, Romanian, French, and Spanish. “Kids at
Marina are more innocent than the high schoolers at
SaMo High.” MDR wishes her well.
Ms. Jackson - Joy to Our School
By Katherine Flores and Valeria De La Torre
“Marina is a welcoming school, with friendly staff, and excited students,” Ms. Jackson said. Ms.
Jackson, a new addition to our faculty, teaches 6th grade math and science. She grew up in Seattle, Washington
and came to California to study at Loyola Marymount University. She was studying
to be an accountant, but thought it was boring. Instead, because she loves kids,
she started a teaching career. Ms. Jackson was an elementary school teacher and
this is her first year teaching at a middle school.
Ms. Jackson loves working at MDR. She loves the students and staff, and
says everyone is very nice. Her first day at Marina wasn’t so great...She had 65
kids in a class of 38 seats! To cope for that day, she took her students to the
outdoor stage instead until her class size was reduced.
Ms. Jackson is a very outgoing and athletic person. She loves going to the
beach and playing volleyball in her free time. She competed in her first triathlon
called Iron Man. She’s nice, talkative, and very welcoming. Congratulations to
Ms. Jackson because she is getting married next summer. We welcome you to our wonderful school.

Mr. Bono
Writer, Teacher
By Samantha Valdarrago and Leslie Romero
Log: Where were you born?
Mr. Bono: New York!
Log: Why did you want
to be an English teacher?
Mr. Bono: Hmm…
because I’m a writer and
I wanted to earn money
and it’s better to have a
job than write for no
one…that was a joke…I
like teaching English. It’s
a fascinating subject!
Log: Did you always want to be an English
teacher?
Mr. Bono: Yes. I always wanted to be a writer
and I wanted to make a living out of it.
Log: What school did you work at before Marina?
Mr. Bono: Huntington Park High School.
Log: Why did you want to come to Marina?
Mr. Bono: I wanted to come to Marina del Rey
because I wanted to be part of a performing arts
program and the other school wasn’t supportive.
Log: Which do you like more, Marina or
Huntington Park High?
Mr. Bono: It’s an adjustment being here because
I’m used to teaching older children.
The Marina community welcomes Mr. Bono!
Mr. Norman
By Theresa Taulaki and Stephanie Santiago
Mr. Norman, guest teacher for Ms. Kim while
she is out on maternity leave, grew up in west Los
Angeles. He went to Bellagio
Road Elementary; he attended
Paul Revere Middle School but
because he was paralyzed for
the second semester, he finished
at Emerson M.S. He also
attended Uni High. He attended
Santa Monica College for
track and basketball. He
majored in English and TV Film
Production at Howard University in Washington, D.C.
He also went to Cal State Northridge in the valley
and got another degree for English.
Mr. Norman loves sports, and his best
friend’s family owns the Oakland A’s and the San
José Sharks and Earthquakes. Mr. Norman has
visited about 40 different countries; he has been to
29 countries with his wife, the beauty queen finalist
from El Salvador in 1988. He likes books that are
funny and have a twist.
Regarding movies, Mr. Norman said, “I’ve
seen and worked on so many movies, I just can’t
choose a favorite one.” He won an Emmy award in
1993. Mr. Norman has been teaching since 1996,
but stopped in 2001 to make movies full time, and
returned to teaching in 2005. He is teaching Ms. Kim’s
fall semester of history because Ms. Kim gave birth
to a baby boy over the summer.

This summer, Mr. Schieneman got poison ivy from
his mom’s front yard in his native state of Georgia.
He knows how to identify if a plant is poison ivy.
Always remember, if it has ‘leaves
of three, let it be.’ The poison ivy
rubbed on his arm and he said, “I
wanted to chop my arm off because
of the itch.” Poison ivy is in the east
and does not grow in California. We
do, however, have poison oak. If it
gets on you or you touch it, spray
put water and soap. Once you
shower, you don’t have the toxins any more. If you
don’t wash off the poison, and you end up touching
someone, they get the toxin on their skin, and they
have horrible itchy breakouts with bubbling skin.

Why I Left My Charter
To Come to MDR
By Parris Wintersmith
Charter Schools are not all they’re cracked
up to be. I know that from personal experience. I
came to MDR from a predominately African
American and Latino charter
school, which had just moved
from Los Angeles to Sherman
Oaks. One reason I came to
Marina is because I prefer an
integrated environment, with all
ethnicities. Plus, the charter had
only 500 students in grades 6th
through 12th. Why would you
put middle schoolers with high schoolers? The social
network wasn’t separated as a school, with separate
buildings for the different levels. In addition, in a small
school, the social “drama” is absolutely horrendous,
and it was everywhere, from the little 6th graders, to
those about-to-go-to-college 12th graders.
The campus was a dirty trailer park and they
would try to make it seem like they were all perfect
and put together, but really… it was a farce, a fraud,
a horrible illusion. Its school activities were low budget
and people never really went because they weren’t
any fun. Even the food was a reflection of the school…
disgusting. The way the school was run was disorderly
too, and even the punishments were cruel. When I
got in trouble for chewing gum, the principal told me
to take the gum, put it on my nose and walk around
campus with it on my face. Yet parents say, “Get my
kid in a charter!” But everything is not what it seems,
and my old school is proof of that. MDR of LAUSD
is my ideal school, and beside the fact that you have
to wear a uniform, I like it here and plan to graduate
from Marina del Rey.
Locked Out
By Valeria De La Tore
Who doesn’t want to use the lockers? It is
crazy! Last year, brand new lockers
were added to our school, but the
problem is that we can’t use them.
What if you carry too much stuff that
teachers require? We might as well
have a locker. Mr. Foster says they
are too much trouble, and may cause
kids to be late for class, or lose their
combination. But let’s take a stand
and let our voice be heard to use the lockers. They’re
new, they’re there, let’s use ‘em!
We are Just Clones
By Julissa Macias
What happened to our freedom of
expression? The freedom we used to have? It is bad
enough that we have to
wear uniforms. But the
color of the shirts we
wear underneath and
outer sweatshirts should
not be limited. I really
don’t like the adults on
drawing by Nan
this campus telling us
what colors to wear. It gets annoying when the adults
on this campus say, “Take off your sweater, it’s not
appropriate.” Or “your undershirt has to be black,
white, navy blue or gray.” They already make us wear
the uniforms and now this?
