woodwinds, brass, and percussion
instruments during the next few years.
Currently the principal clarinetist of the

THE SHOWS
RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN
Carousel ✩ In a Maine coastal village toward the end of the 19th century, the
swaggering, carefree carnival barker, Billy Bigelow, captivates and marries the
naive millworker, Julie Jordan. Billy loses his job just as he learns that Julie is
pregnant and, desperately intent upon providing a decent life for his family, he is
coerced into being an accomplice to a robbery. Caught in the act and facing the
certainty of prison, he takes his own life and is sent 'up there.' Billy is allowed to
return to earth for one day fifteen years later, and he encounters the daughter he
never knew. She is a lonely, friendless teenager, her father's reputation as a thief
and bully having haunted her throughout her young life. How Billy instills in both
the child and her mother a sense of hope and dignity is a dramatic testimony to the
power of love. It's easy to understand why, of all the shows they created, Carousel
was Rodgers & Hammerstein's personal favorite.
South Pacific ✩ Set in an island paradise during World War II, two parallel love
stories are threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war. Nellie, a spunky nurse
from Arkansas, falls in love with a mature French planter, Emile. Nellie learns that
the mother of his children was an island native and, unable to turn her back on
the prejudices with which she was raised, refuses Emile's proposal of marriage.
Meanwhile, the strapping Lt. Joe Cable denies himself the fulfillment of a future
with an innocent Tonkinese girl with whom he's fallen in love out of the same fears
that haunt Nellie. When Emile is recruited to accompany Joe on a dangerous
mission that claims Joe's life, Nellie realizes that life is too short not to seize her
own chance for happiness, thus confronting and conquering her prejudices.
The King and I ✩ East versus West makes for a dramatic, richly textured and
ultimately uplifting tale of enormous fascination. It is 1862 in Siam when an
English widow, Anna Leonowens, and her young son arrive at the Royal Palace
in Bangkok, having been summoned by the King to serve as tutor to his many
children and wives. The King is largely considered to be a barbarian by those in
the West, and he seeks Anna's assistance in changing his image, if not his ways.
With both keeping a firm grip on their respective traditions and values, Anna and
the King grow to understand and, eventually, respect one another, in a truly unique
love story.
Flower Drum Song ✩ The generation gap is given the Rodgers & Hammerstein
treatment in this colorful approach to the age-old conflict. In San Francisco's
Chinatown of the late '50s, nightclub owner Sammy Fong's traditional family has
ordered him a picture-bride from China, hoping to end his pursuit of an enticing
dancer. Mei Li arrives, shy and at sea in a world she doesn't understand, and it's
clear that she's the wrong gal for the totally assimilated Sammy. However, she
may be just the ticket for Sammy's buddy, whose traditionalist father is fighting a
losing battle with his kids against rock `n' roll, baseball, sports cars and the typical
trappings of the modern American life-style. By turns raucous and heartfelt, the

solution to this delightful Chinese puzzle of properly matching the young people
while reconciling the old is a celebration of American ingenuity.
Allegro ✩ This ensemble musical chronicles nearly four decades in the life of an
Everyman, Joseph Taylor, Jr., from cradle through a mid-life discovery of who he
is and what his life is truly about. The first musical to be staged by a director who
was also the choreographer (the legendary Agnes de Mille), the unique structural
format allows the saga to whisk us from Joe's birth through his childhood, from
college dorm to marriage altar, and on to his career; from the tranquility of his small
Midwestern hometown to the hectic din of big city life, in a series of vignettes and
musical sequences dazzling in their simplicity and stunning in their impact. Ahead
of its time theatrically, Allegro remains timeless in its appeal.
Cinderella ✩ The timeless enchantment of a magical fairy tale is reborn with the
Rodgers & Hammerstein hallmarks of originality, charm and elegance. Originally
presented on television in 1957 starring Julie Andrews, Rodgers & Hammerstein's
Cinderella was the most widely viewed program in the history of the medium.
Its recreation in 1965 starring Lesley Ann Warren was no less successful in
transporting a new generation to the miraculous kingdom of dreams-come-true,
and so was a second remake in 1997, which starred Brandy as Cinderella and
Whitney Houston as her Fairy Godmother.
Oklahoma ✩ Rodgers & Hammerstein's first collaboration remains, in many ways,
their most innovative, having set the standards and established the rules of musical
theatre still being followed today. Set in a Western Indian territory just after the
turn of the century, the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys
provides the colorful background against which Curly, a handsome cowboy, and
Laurey, a winsome farm girl, play out their love story. Although the road to true love
never runs smooth, with these two headstrong romantics holding the reins, love's
journey is as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road. That they will succeed in
making a new life together we have no doubt, and that this new life will begin in a
brand-new state provides the ultimate climax to the triumphant Oklahoma!
ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER
Evita ✩ Argentina's controversial First Lady is the subject of this dynamic
musical masterpiece. As an illegitimate fifteen year old, Eva escaped her dirt-poor
existence for the bright lights of Buenos Aires. Driven by ambition and blessed
with charisma, she was a starlet at twenty-two, the president's mistress at twentyfour, First Lady at twenty-seven, and dead at thirty-three. Eva Peron 'saint to
the working-class, reviled by the aristocracy and mistrusted by the military' was
destined to leave a fascinating political legacy unique in the 20th century. Told
through a compelling score that fuses haunting chorales with exuberant Latin, pop
and jazz influences, Evita creates an arresting theatrical portrait as complex as the
woman herself.
THE SHOWS
Starlight Express ✩ A child’s train set magically comes to life and the various
engines compete to become the “Fastest – engine in the World”! The underdog,
Rusty the Steam train, has little chance until he is inspired by the legend of the
“Starlight Express” and ultimately defeats his arch-rivals “Greaseball” and ‘Electra
before going on to win the hand of the lovely first class coach, Pearl.
Cats ✩ Based on the universally popular poetry of T.S. Eliot, Cats tells the story,
in song and dance, of the annual gathering of Jellicle cats at which time one
special cat is selected to ascend to the Heaviside layer. A true musical theatre
phenomenon, Cats opened at London's New London Theatre on May 11, 1981
and ran for a record-setting 21 years. Cats' London success was nearly matched
on Broadway where it ran at the Wintergarden Theatre for just over 18 years.
Sunset Boulevard ✩ Sunset Boulevard weaves a magnificent tale of faded glory
and unfulfilled ambition. Silent movie star Norma Desmond longs for a return to
the big screen, having been discarded by tinsel town with the advent of 'talkies.'
Her glamour has faded in all but her mind. When she meets struggling Hollywood
screen-writer Joe Gillis in dramatic circumstances, their subsequent passionate
and volatile relationship leads to an unforeseen and tragic conclusion.
The Phantom of the Opera ✩ The Phantom of The Opera is composed by
Andrew Lloyd Webber, with lyrics by Charles Hart, additional lyrics by Richard
Stilgoe, and a book by Lloyd Webber and Stilgoe. Based on the classic novel
“Le Fantôme de l’Opéra” by Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of The Opera tells the
story of a masked figure who lurks beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera
House, exercising a reign of terror over all who inhabit it. He falls madly in love with
an innocent young soprano, Christine, and devotes himself to creating a new star
by nurturing her extraordinary talents and by employing all of the devious methods
at his command.
Aspects of Love ✩ This bold and ambitious chamber opera explores the
landscape of the human heart, charting the shifting alliances of six lovers across
three generations. Alex is only seventeen when love changes everything. His
brief affair with the ambitious actress, Rose, sets the course for a succession
of romantic liaisons that last well into manhood. Alex loses Rose to his shrewd,
worldly uncle George and they marry. In time, George's mistress, the lovely
Giulietta, has a fling with Rose, who keeps her own lover, Hugo. Echoes of Rose's
initial caprice with the virginal Alex haunt the proceedings when he, in turn, beds
the teenage daughter Rose has borne his aging uncle. This elaborate la ronde
en famille is driven by an engrossing and muscular score of pure emotional
directness.
ABOUT THE COMPOSERS
Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein II (Music and Lyrics) After long and
highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (composer,
1902-79) and Oscar Hammerstein II (librettist/lyricist, 1895-1960) joined forces in
1943 to create the most successful partnership in the American musical theatre.
Prior to his work with Hammerstein, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz
Hart on a series of musical comedies that epitomized the wit and sophistication of
Broadway in its heyday. Among their greatest successes were Pal Joey, On Your
Toes and Babes In Arms. Throughout the same era Hammerstein brought new
life to the operetta, culminating in the masterpiece, Show Boat (music by Jerome
Kern; Carnegie Hall '08). Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers and Hammerstein musical,
was also the first of a new genre, the musical play, blending Rodgers' musical
comedy style with Hammerstein's innovations in operetta. Oklahoma! was followed
by Carousel, State Fair (film ’45, ’62; Broadway ‘96), Allegro, South Pacific, The
King & I, Me & Juliet, Pipe Dream, Cinderella (television ’57, ’65, ’97; Broadway
‘13), Flower Drum Song and The Sound Of Music. Collectively, their musicals
have garnered dozens of awards including: Pulitzer Prizes; Tonys, Oscars, Emmys,
and Grammys; and Drama Desk, Drama Critics’ Circle, Outer Critics’ Circle,
Laurence Olivier, and Evening Standard Awards.
Andrew Lloyd Webber (Composer) The Likes of Us, Joseph and the Amazing
Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, By Jeeves, Evita, Variations and
Tell Me on a Sunday later combined as Song & Dance, Cats, Starlight Express,
The Phantom of the Opera, Aspects of Love, Sunset Boulevard, Whistle Down
the Wind, The Beautiful Game, The Woman in White and Love Never Dies. He
composed the film scores of Gumshoe and The Odessa File and a setting of the
Latin Requiem mass. He has composed the music for Stephen Ward which opens
in London on 19 December this year.
As well as many of his own shows, his producer credits include Daisy Pulls It
Off, Lend Me a Tenor, Shirley Valentine, La Bête, the ground-breaking Bollywood
musical, A R Rahman’s Bombay Dreams, the London Palladium productions of
The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz and the films of The Phantom of the
Opera and the acclaimed Australian production of Love Never Dies. He pioneered
television casting for musical theatre with the Emmy Award-winning BBC series
How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?. His awards include seven Tonys, three
Grammys including Best Contemporary Classical Composition for Requiem,
seven Oliviers, a Golden Globe, an Oscar, two International Emmys, the Praemium
Imperiale, the Richard Rodgers Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre, a BASCA
Fellowship and the Kennedy Center Honor.
He currently owns six London theatres, including the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane
and the London Palladium. His future projects include support for the breeding
programme of the increasingly rare Turkish swimming cat at Van in Eastern Turkey.
He was knighted in 1992 and created an honorary life peer in 1997.
