Lives change @ your library
National Library Week 2014
This month, The Venice Public Library joins libraries in communities nationwide to celebrate National
Library Week. The theme for National Library Week 2014 is Lives change @ your library. Libraries today
are more than repositories for books and other collections. Venice Public Library is a trusted place where
everyone can connect, engage, improve, and enrich their lives. For many, it is the heart of our community.
National Library Week is a time to recognize the importance of libraries in our communities and the
contributions of library workers and volunteers. Please join the library staff, volunteers, and the Friends for
special National Library Week events from April 13–19.

I ♥ my library!
In our last issue, we asked you to tell us why you love Venice Public Library.
Here’s what a few of you had to say...
The library provides a home away
from home where information can
be found, e-mail and the internet
can be accessed, great readings
and great books can be discussed,
chess can be played, popular songs
can be remembered, movies can be
reviewed, new concepts can be
learned, and the world can be
traveled!
P.s. Plus I can also buy books and
the Venice Friends book store!

It’s not so big you get lost in it and
the volunteers are all so friendly
and helpful. They have a wonderful
schedule of events for their size
and the book store is terrific.
VPL is a very special and unique
library. One feel the aura of its
traditions begun by its founders
and strengthened by its followers.

A Word from our Library Manager
The glorious Florida spring is here. I hope everyone enjoys it and takes a book along
wherever you go, whether in paper-form or as a download! Reading is reading. For
those of you who like to read Large Print books, we recently received a large shipment of
titles. The purchase was made possible by an estate left to the Venice Library for the
express purpose of buying Large Print books for the Venice Library. If you wish to
contribute to the Venice Library in this way, it would be greatly appreciated by both the
Venice Library and all our patrons.
Ann Hall
Library Manager
Our “season” is winding down and soon it will be Easter. I hope you have enjoyed all
the programs presented here at the Venice Library over the last few months. All of those programs are made
possible by the generous donations from the Friends of the Venice Library.
I would like to introduce our newest addition to the Venice Library staff – Todd Tyrna. He is a reference
librarian who got his degree from Florida State University last year. Todd will be offering technology help to
the public. You can make an appointment with him to get help with your electronic device Tuesdays and
Thursday. The times available are between 2 and 4 PM. Each patron can reserve 30 minutes at a time. We
hope that you will take advantage of his knowledge and make the most of those electronic devices. To make
a reservation, please call 941-861-1347.
Enjoy our beautiful state and please be sure to stop by your friendly local library!

Genealogically Speaking
The library and the genealogy area have been humming with activity and visitors this
winter. We are expecting to have a number of new books in the collection in the next few
months so stay tuned for those titles as they arrive.
Melanie Odom This round we will focus on the world of some online sources that some may know and
others may not.
One is HeritageQuest, an online database the library system subscribes to which has many resources
on it including U.S. Census listings (taken from the original cards the census takers filled out—much easier
to read in many cases than other sources), the full text of over 28,000 family and local history books, and
selected Revolutionary War Pension applications and Bounty- Land Grant application files. It also has PERSI
(Periodicals Source Index) which is an index to articles in genealogy magazines. Copies of the articles may
be ordered directly from the Allen County Public Library Foundation by following the directions on the
screen after you find your articles and click your mouse on ‘request form’ at the bottom of each entry. This
database can be accessed on any library internet computer, the genealogy computer when a volunteer is
present, and from home by going to www.scgov.net/library and choosing Databases on the right hand side,
then going down to the letter ‘H’ section and click on HeritageQuest. You will need your library card to
access it from outside the library.
For those of you searching for your long lost New England Ancestors, go no farther than American
Ancestors. This database, brought to us by the Friends of the Venice Library, has numerous resources for
New England genealogy. They include sources such as the Barbour Collection of Connecticut Vital Records
for many years, New York Biographical Record magazines for many years, Massachusetts Vital Records and
New York wills. There is not room to mention much else except all the issues of the New England Historical
and Genealogical Register and much more. It can be used on the genealogy computer when a volunteer is
there, or on any library public internet terminal (ask staff to log you in).
So, happy hunting!

Youth & Young Adult News
Big League Readers
A big THANK YOU to the Friends for purchasing our Big League Reader T-Shirts and
pompoms. Over 400 kids completed a scorecard by checking out and reading at
least three books from a Sarasota County Library during the month of February.
That enabled the reader to one free ticket to a Baltimore Orioles Spring Training
Game. This year, participants in Sarasota County read more than 1,000 books.
Youth Librarians, Pam and Pat gave t-shirts out to the first 200 readers at the
Sunday, March 9th game at Ed Smith Stadium.

We, the Directors of the Friends of the Venice Public Library, resolve that no member of the Board of
Directors shall serve on the Board or participate in any discussion or vote on any matter in which he or she
or a member of his or her immediate family has a potential conflict of interest. We define a conflict of
interest as any set of circumstances which creates a risk that professional judgment or actions regarding the

himself or herself, and be excused from the meeting until discussion is over on the matter involved, and/or
take such other action as may be appropriate. Any board member is expected to make inquiry if such
conflict appears to exist and the board member has not made it known.
Non-compliance of this policy and procedures and the by-law pertaining to conflict of interest on the part of
the board member shall constitute cause for removal from the board.
