NURSES CORNER
Just a reminder that we have 2 days coming up
where student have no school, February 15 and
February 18. For our school calendar and other
information about the Marple Education Center,
you can go to the DCIU home page and click on
the Autistic Support Program. There you will find
helpful tips and resources in the community. Please
let us know if there is something you would like to
see there.
Flu season is upon us and to be sure
to check with your pharmacy or
physician for your flu shots.
Respiratory viruses are very active
now as well. Please monitor your
children and contact your
pediatrician with any concerns.
Guideline for keeping your child
home: They must be fever free for
24 hours.
Winter is underway and it is helpful to remember
in inclement weather to watch the news for school
late openings or delays. We are listed as the
Delaware County Intermediate Unit Special
Programs. If school is opening 2 hours late, the
Marple Education Center will open at 10:30.
Spring is just around the corner!
If the child has more than one
loose stool or is feverish.

the DCIU website. Families are now able
to locate important information such as the
school calendar, lunch menus, letters from
Mr. Joe, and community resources.

School Psychology
Dear Families,
Recently we applied for, and received a grant from the Pet Trust Foundation for a fish tank
for our school. The fish tank is to provide relaxation opportunities for our students, give us
something fun and different to do, and take turns working on care skills. We currently have
one molly fish, a platy fish, and an African dwarf frog. Our sea creatures are still getting
acclimated to being the newest residents of MEC, but soon we will be giving them names
and starting our schedule of taking turns with their care. Some of our students have already
seen them and are so happy they have come to stay with us! I am sure we will have lots of
updates on our aquatic friends in the future. In the next newsletter, be sure to look for the
results of our pet naming contest!

Program Highlights
Our students participate in a monthly Pottery session, which is funded through a grant by
the DCIU Education Foundation. Carol Seymour, from the Potters Guild of Swarthmore
visits us to teach us about new techniques and make beautiful pottery. Each month, we
rotate through all interested students to participate in this unique and enriching activity.

Classroom Highlights
Our art teacher, Ms. Pam, and the
students of Bob Scarlota’s class
created snowflakes to send to the
town of Newtown, Connecticut, to
show their support for the staff and
students of the Newtown tragedy.
The staff are very proud of our
students outreach to help others in
need.
Ms. Kristina Feher and her class created art
work to celebrate Black History month, which is
displayed in our hallway. The students made the
mantel, decorations, and a portrait of Dr. martin
Luther King, Jr.

Positive Behavior Supports for Children with Challenging Behaviors

Children with special needs may have behaviors that are difficult for
parents to manage. What happens at home you’re your child with
special needs has behaviors that are challenging? This interactive session will
present practical, hands-on strategies that parents can use to prevent those behaviors from occurring. The
strategies discussed in this session will apply to children of all ages… toddlers, elementary, middle, high
school students.

Strategies for Struggling Readers
Presenter: Diane Messer
DCIU Professional Development Specialist
Does your child struggle with reading? Does he/she avoid any task
that requires reading? Does he show frustration with reading
assignments? If so, this workshop will help! Successful readers are active readers, and
they use many strategies to make sense of text. This workshop will introduce parents to some of the strategies
used by successful readers, such as visualizing, making connections, and predicting. Participants will experience
these strategies, and support will be provided to help parents incorporate these activities during shared reading
times with their children.
