CHAIKHANA TEA CULTURE
What a great shop with a variety of teas and tea
ware, including Chinese antiquities. A good place to
buy a unique gift, take an out-of-town guest, learn
about different teas or simply to replenish your own
tea stash.
Janette Silverston, Aptos Times
CRAFT GALLERY in Capitola
This is my favorite store in the Capitola Village.
The gift possibilities are great. There are so many
home accessories too. My dear mom bought a
beautiful pottery water fountain for me, which I love.
There is lovely pottery, pewter, etc., etc. I’d be happy
to have gift certificates for the Craft Gallery for all
of my gifts given to me—then I’d buy everything I
liked there.
Sondra Raymond, La Selva Beach
PARWANA Afghan Restaurant
The food is delicious, the staff is lovely, the
ambiance is warm & delightful. The perfect place
for your celebrations as well as ‘just to go out for
dinner’.

Thanks Staff of Life for always caring the best

ImmPower 3 months ago. I have not had one cold
nor one illness of any kind. I have more energy than
I have had for a long time. Thanks to ImmPower
and the Staff!!
Tamara Wilkinson, Aptos
Thank you so much for the best quality fish oils
with Omega 3 and 6. Their choices of products are
delicious tasting, which most are not. They are health
building and I love that I can buy them at my favorite
health food store, the Staff of Life Vitamin Store.

It is so important to my wife and I that all organic
food, beer & wine are served at this restaurant. The
atmosphere is fun—like being on a tropical island;
the food is delicious & healthful!

CHAE ORGANICS – Skin & Body Care
Products
I love your column in Connection Magazine! It is
so educational. Thank you for your 100% toxic-free
& organic skin/body care products. The Nu Age™
C Serum has already made a difference in my skin,
after only 3.5 weeks of use.
PJ, Watsonville
BUGABOO
After reading last month’s Rave Review for the
Nalgene Alternative Water Bottle, I decided to check
it out. It is so durable, that I bought one. I put it on
the top of my car as I was getting out of it, it fell and it
was fine—it did not break. Bugaboo has many other
great outdoor supplies as well.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
• Beginners will receive a solid foundation for using
hypnosis.
“I had no previous experience in hypnosis so when Dr. Kaloski
said I would be hypnotizing my classmates by the second
day of the seminar and actually doing hypnotherapy by the
third day, I was, naturally, a bit skeptical. But his unique
teaching style, coupled with plenty of hands-on practice, had
me feeling like an old pro by the end of class.”
Nina Mareau, Scottsdale, AZ
• Veterans will learn some surprising new
approaches that will boost their success rates
to record levels.
“I learned more from you in three days than I did in a 6
week, $1,500 course from someone else. Your MMP
method enhances the therapeutic process more
than any other method I’ve come across. I highly
recommend your course for both the beginning
hypnotherapist and the veteran alike”.
Peter G. Campione, Ph.D., Costa Mesa, CA
• Current Alternative Therapy Practitioners
will discover how to add an exciting new
dimension to their existing practice to
create an additional and lucrative stream of
income.
“The very next day after taking your outstanding course, I was using the techniques you
taught; and with great success. Since then, it’s made an incredible difference in my
practice. While my colleagues struggle to make ends meet, I’ve got more clients than I can
handle. Your class was the best investment I ever made. I only wish I had done it sooner.”
Tami Bianco, CMT, CHT, N.Y., N.Y.
• Everyone will learn powerful insider marketing secrets directly from
the man who built the nation’s largest and most successful network
of private hypnotherapy clinics.
“I used to be content with $1,500 a month from my part time practice, But now, thanks to
what I learned from you at the seminar, I’m full time, closing in on $13,000 per month and
having a ball. The sky’s the limit.”
Anthony Roselli, Plainfield, NJ
• Just interested in hypnosis? Learn how to make rapid, positive and
permanent changes in your own life. You can: lose weight, stop smoking,
enhance physical & emotional healing, boost motivation & productivity,
conquer procrastination, improve memory, focus & concentration, gain
self-confidence, end fears & phobias, and more!
“Within two days of completing the course, I was using hypnotherapy in my Chiropractic
practice with remarkable success. And, the session I received for my fear of public
speaking at the class worked like a charm. The next day, I was able to make a
presentation at my Women’s Networking group without the usual butterflies. I was cool,
calm, collected and totally at ease. I can definitely say, “Hypnosis works!”

We’ve Got to Stop Meeting Like This!
Part 2
by Daniel Robin
L
Page 23
▲
AST MONTH (prior articles
available online), we kicked
around three notorious challenges of meeting with meaning.
Here’s the rest.
For all you control freaks out
there, even the best-crafted meeting
agendas and conduct guidelines can’t
guard against digressions, distractions, and other (potentially valuable) outbreaks of
human spontaneity. The challenge
is to keep meetings
focused
on
acknowledged
goals without stifling creativity or
insulting participants who stray.
Try
using
a
flipchart page to record ideas that
don’t seem relevant in the moment.
Find out more between meetings and
bring the idea into future discussion.
Issue #4: People don’t tell the
truth. There’s plenty of talk, but not
much candor.
Cause: People don’t feel safe
enough or respected enough. Lack of
safety/reward for speaking up.
Remedy:
Respect diverse
points of view, even if you don’t
agree. Listen with the intention to
results! Your reputation for consistency and fairness is your most powerful leadership tool.
Issue #5: Important information
is missing, so you postpone critical
decisions.
Cause: Nobody thought ahead
to research underlying facts.
Remedy: Assign someone to
get key facts, not just furniture and
opinions, into the room.
Come prepared with facts and
evidence—be it from conversations
you just had or the Internet—and
present these facts as well as your
interpretation or opinion about what
they mean. Ask if there’s more that
must be known … question assumptions.
If there’s difficulty with obtaining key facts needed for a meeting,
consider asking for help or postponing the meeting.
Issue #6: Nothing happens once
the meeting ends.
Cause: People don’t convert
from meeting to decisions to effective action.
Remedy:
Transition from
“meeting” to “doing” and focus on
consensus records.
The problem isn’t that people
are lazy or irresponsible. It’s often
that people leave meetings with different interpretations of what just
happened and what’s supposed to
understand the merits of the idea, not
to put down or judge the contributor.
Be consistent and fair.
Sometimes the problem is a
leader who doesn’t solicit participation or who can only consider views
that fit with (their own) foregone
conclusions. But, most of the time,
the problem is simply that politics
replaced performance, there’s no
reward system for teamwork or risktaking, … which leads to lack of
trust, game-playing of loss of r-e-s-pe-c-t. People don’t have a reason to
say what they really think.
Meeting leaders must become
comfortable within their discomfort.
Effective collaboration includes periods of uncontrollable chaos (people
expressing unpopular or negative
views) and unbridled creativity from
thinking differently about solutions
and opportunities in order to invent
and innovate. This “storm” usually
passes quickly, if it is fully accepted.
And, if the meeting is just
reporting and disseminating information (not collaboration), then why
meet? Technology and accountability structures can be used to coordinate and keep everyone current.
Show baseline respect and
appreciation for ideas that differ
from your own. Honor people’s
boundaries. Give up politics and
adversarial power plays—focus on
getting things done and getting

e typically think of organs
as blobs floating around in
our torso happily excreting, pumping and digesting along.
What you may not know is that organs
have a large effect on our posture,
movement, and flexibility.
Organs actually have very specific ligaments and joint-like articulations that effect and participate in your
body’s biomechanics. You would not
be able to bend forward if the lung did
not glide over the curvature of the liver,
and then the liver over the kidney and
intestine. The range of motion of these
organ articulations and their ligamental connection to the spine, ribs and
pelvis is an essential part of our body’s
agility. Injury, adhesions, infection,
scar tissue, disease, toxins and congestion will affect the organ system biomechanics and organ function. If an
organ cannot move, it cannot function.
Disease, pain, and rigidity may sooner
or later follow as various organs are
bound down and restricted from circulation.
In my own yoga practice I have
awakened to this organ structural reality. For years I have been working to
flatten my lower back during downward dog position. During a treatment
it was discovered that my mesenteric
tendon was extremely tight. This is the
W
tendon that connects
all your intestines to
the spine. This mesenteric tendon, which runs
diagonally along the
front of the lumbar
spine, was restricting
the flexibility of my spine during the
yoga posture. Previously, I was only
thinking of muscles, bones, and joints
when trying to flatten the back. The
release of this restriction through visceral manipulation techniques and
self-applied visceral yoga has made a
significant shift in my yoga practice.
Perhaps, not so surprisingly, the belly
aches that I have had from time to time
have also been remedied.
In my therapy practice, the roll
that organs play in various ailments
constantly astounds me. I have seen
frozen shoulders caused by gallbladders. Spinal bones pulled painfully out
of place from a translated liver. Sciatic symptoms caused from colon restrictions. Migraines originating from
uterus spasms. Constipation from adhered intestine and colon loops. Rib
pain and posture anomalies from a hiatal hernia of the stomach. Lung and
heart ligaments can easily pull on the
neck causing spasms in the posterior
muscles. Organs are of course not always the cause of what ails us, but we
need to remember how much of a roll
they play in our moving structure and
health in general.
One of the best ways to keep
healthy happy organs is just to take a
walk. With every step the twist in the
torso will move and massage all the
organs. As one of the great osteopathic
grandfathers Rollin Becker once said,
‘Life is motion’. So keep your body
moving, and keep your organs healthy.

There is less talk of muscle mass
as a benefit as we age, but it is just as
important. Muscle mass is a reflection
of our vitality. Strong and smartly exercised muscle will support bony postural alignment. And good posture

t sounds simple enough: In order
to loose weight, all we need to do
is eat healthier and exercise more.
Then, why is it that so many people in
our society find the task so difficult?
In our clinical experience, we find
that the answers are a bit more complex. Take two different people, feed
them the same diet and put them under the same exercise program, and
one will loose weight while the other
will not.
The answer lies in the sophisticated chemistry of our organisms.
“The right diet may be wrong for
you.” This statement predicts that each
individual requires a diet program that
takes into account his or her unique
biochemical individuality. Some of
the major deciding
factors are: Metabolic type, body

will determine
what type of diet
and exercise program a person will
need in order to loose, as well as,
KEEP OFF weight.
Perhaps, the most crucial of the
indicators is the person’s Metabolic
Type. This refers to the way that our
cells utilize nutrients. Inside our cells
lies a “battery” called the mitochondria. The absorption of individual nutrients and the production of energy
molecules occurs within that part of
the cell. How efficient this process is
will determine how much energy is
produced and how efficient our cells
become. But different people need
different proportions of nutrients (carbohydrates, proteins and fats) for the
process to be optimally effective. That
explains why some of us feel better on
a high protein diet and some can get
sick on them. Even the type of protein and/or fats will differ according
to our Metabolic Type. Nature is diverse and so are our bodies.
The American search for the
“right” diet needs to change focus from
the type of diet that fits all to an individualized approach. Only then will
those desiring to loose weight be able
to find a lifelong solution to the weight
problems that plague so many of us.

here is a lot of talk about the
benefits of exercise for mind,
body and spirit. Here to rub it
in again, are a few points from the
mechanical perspective.
Exercise makes bones and
muscle more dense and this is a good
way to sustain your vitality as you age.
If you think about it, the process of
aging poorly is a process of “wasting.”
Muscles thin-out and weaken, and
bones demineralize. Exercise is proven
to remineralize bone. Strong bones are
our calcium reserves (needed for blood
calcium levels), and they are our structure. Strong bones have less potential
to break under the stress of falls and
injury. Did you know that osteoporotic
ace bandages, strapping the joints securely and decreasing the potential for
serious effects when
injured. Strong
muscle is basically a storehouse of
energy and vitality; You can think of
each muscle cell as a little hybrid car
engine with a generator and a battery
pack. As the cell is used in exercise, it
not only generates and expends energy,
but it stores some energy also. Basically, muscles that are used are more
vital, because they have potential
energy.
Another positive benefit to exercise is for your blood sugar level. As
each muscle cell takes in nutrients
from the blood to do its work, your
blood sugar levels are decreased dramatically. This is the case not just
while you exercise, but in resting, too.
You see, well exercised muscle cells
pull in more sugar and other nutrients
all the time… because they are vital.
This is great news for

The Dental Abscess/
Fistula Cycle: Part I
by David L. Biles, D.D.S., M.A.
any people who turn to alternative
healing strategies have come across
the declaration that the human body
heals itself, given the right conditions and necessary elements for healing to occur. Such is the
case in the mouth, too, as both hard and soft tissue heals well when conditions are ideal. However, to the ignorant, in some situations, what is
often perceived and termed as healing is, in fact,
the progressive degradation of bony tissue. In this
series of articles I will discuss the conditions
necessary for healing in the mouth to occur and
the dental abscess/fistula cycle, a descriptive I
have coined to describe the pathologic events
believed by many to represent healing.
Gum tissue, which is a comparatively highly
vascularized tissue, having many blood vessels
per unit volume, heals rather rapidly when conditions are appropriate. Bone, for example, which
is less dense in blood vessels, heals slower than
soft tissue. An ample supply of blood enables
nutrients to reach a healing site for rebuilding,
while also serving as a medium to transport
wastes away from an injured or diseased area.
With more blood vessels in a given area, transport to and from a healing tissue site is maximized. Healthy blood, with the appropriate levels of platelets for clotting and hemoglobin for
M
oxygen delivery, also has a viscosity
that favors quicker transport. Clearly,
ample whole body hydration also benefits a healing mouth, a topic we have
covered previously.
Other conditions favor healing. An alkaline pH, for example, present in the saliva and
tissue, facilitates healing. Enzymes work better
in an alkaline environment, speeding up repair.
Acidic conditions, by comparison, impair healing, and in severe cases, prevent healing to occur at all. In life and death code-blue scenarios
played out daily in intensive care units, pH is
monitored and regulated with sodium bicarbonate injections during efforts to resuscitate failing
hearts.
What can cause acidic conditions to persist
in a healing site? Diet is one factor. Diets high
in sugar and protein create chronic acidic tissue
conditions. Diets high in greens have an alkalizing effect, keeping tissue in an overall healthy
state, lending to easier repair.
The presence of bacteria will impair healing. So when soft tissue is healing in the mouth,
it is important that teeth are clean and free of
food, debris, and bacteria. This is best accomplished by stellar oral hygiene — even after the
removal of wisdom teeth. Bacteria multiply rapidly in poorly cleaned mouths, and their waste
products create pain, and slow healing significantly. Much of the pain humans feel several
days after the extraction of teeth comes from
bacterial buildup due to poor oral hygiene. The
less you clean, the more painful the area becomes.
Brush, floss, and rinse with warm saline to rid
the bacteria.
And what of the dental abscess/fistula
cycle? It’s the healing that never ends. The ongoing healing — eruption — healing we will discuss next issue.
Dr. Biles questions conventional wisdom

philosophical approach grounded on scientific
principles. He has lectured nationally on

And this is to say nothing of the positive
effects exercise can have for balance and coordination. I personally believe that balance and coordination is one of the big keys to youth. When
was the last time you walked on a railroad rail or
rode your bike along the painted line for fun?
Most sports and recreational exercise require
coordination and balance, from frisbee, to mountain biking, surfing, windsurfing, hiking (on
rougher terrain), rough housing. Try practicing
some balance exercises while you watch TV. (I
use simple yoga balancing poses from a book,
as well as an air-filled “balance disc” to stand

The Health of Women in Iraq Has Deteriorated—
Over 1,000 Doctors Have Left the Country
Iraqi Women
THEN & NOW
by Ruth Hunter
“M
Y ONE SLIVER OF
hope lies with the
American people. No
other force in the world can make the
American troops leave our country. No
other force in the world can make this
government hear our cries”. This
poignant appeal came from Dr. Entisar
Mohammad Ariabi, Yarmook Hospital,
Baghdad. The doctor, speaking as a
member of the Iraqi women’s delegation organized by Global Exchange,
was speaking to American audiences
during a tour of the U.S.
Dr. Ariabi compared Iraq’s disease control under the regime of
Saddam Hussein and conditions today
in her country. According to the doctor, since 2003 when the U.S. occupied Iraq, a health crisis has been created. Formerly controlled, cholera,
meningitis, hepatitis and polio are
rampant, the health of women has
deteriorated, over 1,000 doctors
have left the country.
She also described the daily nightmare living in her country. “Iraq has
become a river of blood”. Hospitals are
overwhelmed with Iraqis maimed,
bleeding, caught in the crossfire, targets of kidnappers, shot by U.S. troops.
Her words were corroborated by a
report issued by Code Pink, “Iraqi
Women Under Siege”. The report
included a provocative statement
asserting that under the former regime,
from 1958 to 1990, Iraqi women had
more rights and freedom than most of
the other countries in the Middle East.
Some of these freedoms were
also detailed in a report issued by the
Human Rights News. Under Iraqi
Provisional
Constitution
passed in 1970,
equal

equal pay for equal work; compulsory
education through primary grades and
elimination of illiteracy in the country
by providing classes for adults; granting divorced women custody of their
children until ten with provisions for
extensions; the right to vote and run
for office; and the ability to seek professional degrees.
In addition, in 1986, Iraq was the
first country in the Middle East to ratify the UN Convention on the
Elimination of All Forms of
Discrimination Against Women,
(CEDAW). After the Gulf War, 1991,
when the UN issued sanctions against
Iraq, the nightmare for women began.
The Baathist government under
Saddam Hussein, reeling from economic instability, embraced the
Islamic and tribal traditions of the
religious, hoping to lure these powerful groups into their secular fold.
Women were practically prisoners in
their homes, ordered to wear the veil,
their economic contributions to the
economy sharply curtailed, their educational opportunities virtually non
existent.
Page 8 ▲ The Connection Magazine ▲ www.theConnect.com ▲ September 2006
Included in the Code Pink report
are additional problems Iraqi women
face daily: the streets are dangerous,
women face abuse, rape, victims of
violence when they venture out to seek
food or social services. Women are
struggling to raise their families as they
cope with shortages of electricity, clean
water, decent schools, health care, etc.
Unemployment for women has ‘skyrocketed’. They now have limited seats
in Parliament. Islamic religious are
forcing women to wear burquas, placed
restrictions on marriage, divorce and
inheritance.
And, the list goes on. However,
just as women took charge of their lives
in Afghanistan with the help of RAWA,
so women in Iraq are secretly meeting
in safe areas of refuge. They are holding classes in computers and other economic skills, offer free health care, and
a host of other tactics to gain back a
voice in their destinies.
Iraqi women desperately need
our help—now. They want the US
troops to leave, to give their soil space
to heal the wounds that have torn apart
their culture. We must ask ourselves the
disturbing question—why did we
invade a sovereign country? What are
we accomplishing by staying except to
lose more of our best and brightest,
killing more Iraqis daily? For our country, for the Iraqi people, for the Iraqi
women who have lost so much, we,
women of America must be their voice.
We can do no less than demand our
country leave Iraq to the Iraqis.

health and freedom for all.

The New Hemp Museum
A Little History & Updates
by Paul Gaylon,
I
N DOWNTOWN SANTA
CRUZ, across from the town
clock, you find the new Santa
Cruz Hemp Museum and Hemp
Horizons Store. It is next to the little
park where the Tom Scribner musical
saw sculpture was first placed.
Curiously, the light green and yellow
building from 1920 contains fire
bricks that were salvaged from the
1906 San Francisco earthquake. This
was patterned from the style that
Frank Lloyd Wright incorporated
into some of the rebuilding of San
Francisco. Standing by the hemp
museum and store, you see a clear
view of the Flatiron Building (Odd
Fellows Hall) that creates an apex of
Pacific Avenue and Front Street. This
feature is typical of California towns
that mirror each other. I come away
with the feeling of parallel histories.
The hemp museum building,
like the hemp industry itself, has
been revived after a time of neglect;
it has been remodelled and decorated
inside into a contemporary wonder. It
is only the second hemp museum in
the U.S. It celebrates a great resource
that has been marginalized and sup-
pressed for decades. The more recent
industrial hemp revival has been
driven by small companies working
to establish industrial hemp as a crop
product for paper, building materials,
food, fuel, and fiber. Our Industrial
Hemp Expos in Santa Cruz from
1998 - 2001 played a very important
role at bringing to public awareness
all the benefits of industrial hemp.
Step into the Hemp Horizons
store and U.S. Hemp Museum and
you step into the versatile world of
hemp and its long history. This is
another example of dedication to
hard work and creative energy.

A Conversation With Your Authentic Self
by Paddy Easton Graves
W
HEN IS THE LAST time
you had an honest conversation with your authentic
self? Has it been days, weeks, years,
or have you ever had an honest conversation with your authentic self? If you
have never spoken with your true self,
then perhaps you would be willing to
consider doing this now. If you have
been conversing with the only part of
you that is real, why are you still where
you are? What is keeping you from the
conversation with your authentic self
being the only conversation you
have?
You have been praying for the
experience of peace, abundance, joy,
healing and a life filled with miracles. You have also been praying to
find a way to let go of the fear that
keeps you in an endless movie in
your mind–a movie that goes
nowhere except in a circle poised so
effectively that for you, it appears as
a straight line moving from past into
future, when the truth is, you are
swinging back and forth on a neverending pendulum of judging yourself
as better than or less than. The path
of the pendulum is a circle that crosses itself forming an infinity sign. At
the point where the path intersects,
there is a grand window of opportunity for you to meet your authentic
self, for in this instant, you are
between thoughts. At the lowest
point of the pendulum, you are in
complete alignment with the infinite
universe, you are separate from nothing, you have no past, no future and
no thought at all. It is here, at
absolute zero point, that you know
yourself as God.
Each time your movie, as it
moves in its cycle, passes through
this point, you get a glimmer of light
and you have a true experience with
the real world. Try as you might,
you can never get away from this, for
this is love, and love is what remains
as the only reality when you have
released your connection with everything else, including, and especially
the incessant conversation taking
place in your mind.
You need not waste another precious moment in an effort to comprehend.Your intellect is getting in the
way of knowing.Your genius, along
with all the information you have
gathered has served only to feed your
fear of being your authentic self.
When you have your first honest conversation with your real self,
an interesting reaction occurs: you
get scared and then you get
angry.While you are angry and
afraid, you search, until you find, resolution. Depending on your intent,
and nothing else, you either transcend your fear by staying in conversation with your authentic self, or
you find a reasonable, valid and often
brilliant justification for returning to
your movie.
For those who are courageous
enough to cling to their authentic self
no matter how great the fear, a miracle takes place: the fear is gone.
Fear cannot exist in the instant you
are being your authentic self, as fear
is a frequency that manifests as a fictional story created by your false self.
The conversation with your authentic
self is silent and the only movie it can
make is in real time, is beautiful, loving, and filled with abundance in
every area of your life and all life.
Without mindless thought patterns filling your head, you discover
a void. Since there are no voids, you
will want to fill this space with something that you will to create with your
heart, or the old conversation will
rush back in.
You do not have to look far to
find your authentic self, all you need
do is see where, in this instant, you
are not being real, and understand
the consequence. See how you give
back the very things for which you
have spent much of this lifetime
praying.Things like truth, love,
abundance,
success,
and
purpose.You are rejecting God’s
gifts and replacing them with something you find more valuable: being
right.Being right is your god until
you discover that being right does
not hold the value you had given it,
and can answer none of your
prayers.
Authentic conversation is taking place all over the universe. You
are destined to partake in the
Universal Conversation as it comes
directly from the love that is your
source. When attuned to the
Universal Conversation, you know
who you are as a thought you are
having of yourself. You recognize
your infinite power to create, and
because fear has no concept and
you already know that you are
God, you create a perfect
world.There is only love from
which to create and from this love
you make form.
You know that you made this
world with your thoughts. You
made war and you made suffering.
Now, it is time for you to step into the
person you have always been and recreate the world.

Brand New Custom Eco Homes in Capitola
Building a Better World One Home at a Time
by Paddy Easton Graves
I
N THE EARLY spring of 2002,
after years of involvement with
environmental
and
political
activism, Steve and Paddy Graves
began looking for something to commit
their time and values to that was positive, pro-active, and fulfilled their
desire to make the world a better,
healthier, more joyous place. Green
Building came their way.
The desire for change, the belief in
the human spirit, and the willingness to
‘build outside the box’, were the elements that catalyzed the McCormick
Woods luxury eco-home project in
Capitola. The dream has become a reality for this long time Santa Cruz family,
with McCormick Woods being the first
of many green building projects to come.
Easton Graves believe that now is
the time to embrace the conscious
‘architect’ within our selves—the creator attuned to the highest principles of
nature, harmony and sustainability. Now
is the time to transition to a new way of
building based on preservation, support
of the eco-system, use of renewable
energy, alternative, recycled, and nontoxic materials. The Graves’ recognize
the tremendous impact that conventional construction has on both the health of
the individual and the planet. They also
ly step outside the box of comfort and
familiarity and take the high road to the
infinite possibilities for our home
called Earth. We are the builders of our
future—let us lead well.
Steve Graves is an environmental
and land use consultant in Soquel. He
and his staff, Sarah Wilkinson and Zack
Dahl, form Stephen Graves Associates.
Steve graduated from Cal Poly with a
Masters degree in Environmental
Studies and, as a Santa Cruz community
member, has been active in supporting
and promoting environmental issues.

lecturer, Spiritual Activist, and author
of Essential Love, The Call to Awaken.
She teaches golf as a spiritual path.

feel that the construction industry and
developers in general have been resistant to change and embracing new technologies that are better for the consumer

Through McCormick Woods and
projects to come, the Graves’ commitment to Green Building is founded on
the belief that they can contribute to a
new model for development that does
not sacrifice comfort, beauty, or economic values. By creating a luxurious
and green development that is economically viable to the developer and con-
sumer, the Graves’ hope to raise the bar
so that conventional construction will
evolve to embrace these more sustainable methods.
Paddy and Steve invite each of us

We May Yet Learn to Live in
Harmony with Our Precious
and Endangered Earth
by John Robbins

aybe we aren’t on a one-way road to
oblivion. Maybe we’re standing at a cross
road, facing what may be the most important choice human beings have ever faced, a
choice between two directions. In one direction is
what we will have if we do nothing to alter our
present course. By doing nothing, we are choosing a world of pollution and extinctions, of widening chasms and deepening despair, a world where
humanity moves ever farther from achieving its
highest aspirations and ever nearer to living its
darkest fears.
Our other choice is to actively engage with
the living world. On this path we work responsibly
and joyfully to make our lives, and our societies,
into expressions of our love for ourselves, for each
other, and for the living Earth. In this direction we
honor our longing to give our children, and all children, a world with clean air and water, with blue
skies and abundant wildlife, with a stable climate
and a healthy environment.
If you live with fear for our future, you are
not alone.
If you live with dreams of a better world, you
are not alone.
We all live, now, with both the pain and the
possibility we carry in our hearts, both the despair
A
ug. 22, 2006—Fluoride in drinking water
damages children’s liver and kidney functions, according to a new study in “Environmental Research” (1), reports the New York
State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation
(NYSCOF).
Xiong and colleagues write, “Our results suggest that drinking water fluoride levels over 2.0
mg/L can cause damage to liver and kidney functions in children.” Further, dental fluorosis (fluoride-discolored teeth) can be an indicator of kidney function harm, they report.
Researchers grouped 210 Chinese children
(aged 10-12 years old) by drinking water fluoride
levels (averaging 0 .76; 1.47; 2.58; and 4.5l mg/
L). Dental fluorosis rates, respectively, were 15%,
41%, 79% and 94%.
Blood serum and urine samples revealed:
as water fluoride levels increased, liver and kidney enzymes elevated, indicative of liver or kidney damage, in children drinking water with over
2mg fluoride per liter. Liver function can be damaged without dental fluorosis.
“Dose-effect relationship between water fluoride levels and damage to liver and kidney functions in animals has been reported,” the authors
write. However, this is one of the few to do so in
humans. The liver and kidneys are especially susceptible to fluoride toxicity,
they write.
Paul
Beeber,
NYSCOF President says,
“2 mg fluoride daily is very
often exceeded from food,
beverages, pharmaceuticals, and dental products.
Clearly this is more evidence showing fluoridation
is not only harmful, but unethical and immoral,” says
Beeber.
To prevent crippling
skeletal fluorosis, the Environmental Protection
Agency set 4 mg/L as the
maximum fluoride contamination of drinking water. But, this doesn’t protect
all Americans from all of
fluoride’s adverse effects,
according to a recent National Academy of Sciences (NAS) fluoride
panel. (2)
and the hope that we may yet learn to live in harmony with our precious and endangered Earth.
There is not a person alive today who does not,
at some level, know we are facing these two directions, and understand how much is at stake.
I am aware how strong are the forces of ignorance, greed, and denial in our society. I know
it is possible that we won’t make it.
But, I am also aware of how strong is the
longing and the love of life in the human heart.
And so I know it is possible that we will make it,
that we will create a sustainable economy that
protects the living systems of the Earth, that we
will come to be part of the world’s repair. The
power of darkness in our world is great, but it is
not as great as the power of the human spirit. We
can learn to provide for our needs and limit our
numbers while cherishing this beautiful planet and
its creatures. It is in our nature to honor the sacredness of life.
What is at stake today is enormous; it is the
destiny of life on Earth. At such a time, walking a
path of honoring ourselves and the living planet
is our responsibility as citizens of the planet, but it
is something more, as well. It is also a joy, and a
privilege.”
John Robbins is the author of HEALTHY AT

After reviewing hundreds of studies over 3 1
years, at least three scientists on the NAS panel
recommend water fluoride levels be lowered well
under 1 mg/L—the current level dentists claim is
optimal to reduce cavities, and deliberately added
to public water supplies. (3) “Fluoridated water is
also linked to thyroid dysfunction, bone damage
and cancer in humans—even at 1 mg/L,” says
Beeber. “Americans are guinea pigs for the
country’s failed fluoridation experiment.”

GIVE ME TOXIC FREE
by Donna Williams-Smith
t is vitally important, in today’s world, to
read and understand ingredients labels and
know what you are applying to your skin
when using soaps, facial cleansers, moisturizers,
shampoos and other personal care products.
Because the skin serves as the body’s largest
immune defense system, it is crucial it be nourished and protected on a daily basis with prod-
I
ucts of the highest integrity.
Strong detergents or cleansers that are too
harsh thwart the immune system. Cleansing
should not disturb the acid mantle of the skin or
weaken our body’s defenses. If soap takes it into
a high pH or imbalanced state, the lye in the soap
not only strips the skin of moisture and oil, like
detergents, it also leaves an alkaline coating,
which affects the epidermis for many hours.
In addition,
cleansers should
not carry detrimental ingredients like DEA or
Propylene Glycol
which may be absorbed through
dermal layers, of
which studies
have shown systemic retention
(residue throughout). The skin’s
health is based on
water and oil content, elasticity and firmness of its
proteins and carbohydrates. The use of products containing ingredients that will interfere with
water/oil content or dissolve proteins is not recommended. Detergents clean egg off dishes because they dissolve proteins.
According to the American College of Toxicity report: SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) and
SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulfate) are perhaps the
most dangerous personal care product ingredients. Found regularly in a plethora of products –
toothpastes, hair conditioners, 90% of products
that foam, SLS and SLES are dangerous because
combined with other chemicals, they can be
transformed into nitrosomines, a potent class of
carcinogens which cause the body to absorb nitrates at higher levels than eating nitrate-concentrated food.
The use of SLS and other harmful ingredients like Propylene Glycol or PEG, and the antibacterial agent Triclosan (containing dioxin and
described as “a long slow poison”) is alarming.
However, the formulators of products that include
them are doing business as usual, using questionable substances, because it’s the way things
have been done for decades and the FDA isn’t
stopping them. These common, plentiful ingredients are inexpensive and consumers generally
shop price. Changing to safer ingredients would
mean slightly higher cost in a very competitive
market.
It is understandable why consumer advocate Linda Chaé’s philosophy, toxic free and organic products are such a welcome alternative.
She believes it is not ethical to strip the skin of
necessary components and then try to replace
them with ones of lesser or detrimental quality.
She will not use harmful ingredients in any of
her formulations. For example, her facial cleanser
cleans but does not interfere with the skin’s own
natural oil, nor strip/dissolve the protein which
makes up a large part of the skin’s structure.
Containing no numbing agents, like those found
in tearless shampoos, it removes eye makeup
without burning the eyes. Besides cleaning, it
also revitalizes the whole mineral nutrient value
of the skin. Her commitment to doing no harm is
refreshing and positive in an industry where the
dollar sign is the bottom line.
Harmful ingredients will be tested repeatedly, but many years will pass and cancer rates
and other illness will continue to soar. Debate
and legislation will progress at a snail’s pace, but
the consequences associated with continued use
will continue regardless. As consumers, education, non-complacency, and a proactive stance is
our best defense.

M
ATTERS STILL REMAIN very
perilous as the last cabal
sees the final chance to continue their mayhem. They do not realize
that their continual threats against the
Iran alliance, is highlighting the very
action that horrifies the majority of people. A sudden turn of events can take
them by surprise, but the specter of
enlarging the Middle East confrontation
has been hanging over those countries
for quite a long time. It has been continually placed in the front line of the
news, and the prospect of a total war
has been found most chilling.
However the continual banging of
the war drums, is alerting more people
than ever to the disastrous effect this
would have on the whole world.
Consequently, there is a rebellion gaining pace that is seeing masses of people coming out and protesting against
the U.S. Government policies. There
was a time when governments would
hardly be challenged on them at all,
and you believed that your representatives would work in your best interests.
Now a different mindset is growing that
no longer sees war as an answer to
problems, and seeks a peaceful way to
achieve satisfactory results.
The mood of the people has dramatically changed, and it is empowering others who now join the protesters
who are against war. Other countries
are also expressing concern and the
new way of thinking is gathering vast
support. Changes are born out of such
situations, and it is a sure sign that matters cannot continue in their present
way for much longer. You the people are
once again demonstrating how powerful
you can be, when you find a common
purpose to ignite your cause. The energies for change are going to bring the
last cabal down, and you will take much
credit for the results.
Some of you wonder whether your
prayers and pleas are really heard as
you seek a quicker response. Be
patient, and the sure signs of your coming success will be clearly apparent to
you. Even although many cannot see
who is coming forward to champion
groups in a face off. The dark of course
do not care, and this is what is worrying
for decent people who simply want to
live their lives in peace and security.
Something must give before long
and you are pushing towards the

their cause, people know that unless
the mad rush to war is halted the whole
world could become polarized. The last
development you want is two powerful
changes, that will for once and for all
lead mankind out of the chaos and
uncertainty that has been created by
the dark forces. This is something of a

David and Goliath scenario, but without
weapons you are a formidable force
that has untold power. As unpleasant as
you have found the last few years, they
have been instrumental in causing
much thought to be given as to the type
of world you want to live in and leave
for future generations. Young people
with their future ahead of them feel the
lack of consideration very deeply, and
as a result they become morose and
reject their peers.
Everything is pointing to the need
for matters to be taken in hand by those
who have a different agenda, and one
that actively addresses the problems
that are pulling countries into a contrived war. The movement you have
started, to direct Humanity into a different direction, is one that has our support, and we are quietly assisting those
individuals who have stepped forward to
lead it onwards. In the meantime, the

higher energies continue to stream to
Earth and these are also hastening
the changes. This month is one that
could yet see wonderful developments
that will signal
the start of a
new beginning,
one that will fulfill the dreams
and desires of
peaceful loving
people.
The outer
events on Earth
are so demanding of your
attention that
you can easily
forget to look
after self. Step back occasionally and
take the time to bring your energies
into balance, as your wellbeing is an
important factor at this time. You need
to keep alert and aware, but not
immersed in the matters that take
your attention. Your greatest service to
everyone else at this time, still
revolves around your ability to keep
calm and send out healing energies to
wherever you see the need. The
power of love is immense, and can
touch the hearts of those who have
shrouded their Light with darkness.
The higher forces are playing
their part by backing up your actions,
and they look to ensure that you
achieve a steady progress. The plan
to move you fully into the Light progresses perfectly, and at the level it
works from it is not bound by time as
you understand it. In the Now, you
have already succeeded in overcoming the dark, and it only remains for it
to be manifested upon Earth.
Many aspects of the changes
are well under way, and they are gradually drawing together which will give
impetus to the final chapter of your
experiences in duality. What are
seemingly unconnected events, will
prove to be part of an intricate plan to
release you from the dark for all time.
Your expanding consciousness is one
such important factor, as the more
you become enlightened the easier
you will comprehend what is happening. It also means that you can participate with full knowledge of what is
required of you, both from a physical
and spiritual point of view.
You are in a most wonderful period of change that offers unlimited
opportunities to serve the Light. You are
feeling the new energies coming in, and
they are wonderfully vibrant and uplifting. If you feel Light-headed, this is a
sign of the changes occurring within
you, and they will bring an inner peace
and calmness. In the midst of the physical changes, it is easy to forget that
they are taking place on many levels at
the same time. The whole Earth is in a
state of change and you will witness
those of a physical nature. They can be
viewed with wonder and awe when you
understand their magnificence.
I am St. Germain and feel the

new—it’s another one out of their old
book of tricks, so to say, but the effort
was so clumsily implemented that the
decision was made to abandon it,
greatly exaggerate the extent of the
plan and
announce that
the “terrorist
perpetrators”
were foiled in
their attempts.
Rather suspiciously—actually, it is blatantly
transparent that
it involved flights
between the
countries ruled
by Bush and
Blair, the only
national leader who unfailingly endorses Bush’s policies and very likely the
only one who would agree to squash all
authentic investigations, just as he did
with the train bombing charade.
Another twist is the timing—again transparent—with political campaigning in
full force for the upcoming elections in
the United States and poll results favoring Democrat candidates, the
Republican party pulled out its major
platform plank: The war on terror!
Small acts of terrorism will be successful, as I have said before. The
fanatics who are retaliating for generations of oppression often succeed in
their intentions, but between the intelligence of off- and on-planet light beings
and the advanced technology of our
space family, no black ops activity will
meet success. Dozens of attempts like
this one to explode airliners and far
more destructive plots wherein many,
many thousands of lives would have
been the toll, have been prevented.
Since that is the case, it is logical
to ask why the attempts are still being

Matthew in the book, Tell Me About

MATTHEW: Greetings to you,
dear soul. What I shall do is answer
many questions from you folks without
interruption, and I will start with the one
uppermost in the minds of the world—
the “terror” involving the airplanes. It is
another Illuminati-CIA “black ops” terrorist failure being publicized as an “intelligence success,” just a different mode of
transportation from the “intelligence
coup” that kept the trains in England
from being bombed, which I spoke
about in a prior message.
It is as I said at that time, either way
that scenario goes, the fictitious war on
global terror is kept alive and kicking to
justify everything President Bush does
on orders from more powerful Illuminati
members. And whichever way that is, it
is one side of their win-win situation,
with the companion side that fear gets
back on center stage for a large segment of the populace. Even among
you who sense that these incidents are
what they are, there is a slender
streamer of anxiety as mainline media
repeats and repeats “fear,” “threat,” “terror,” “fright.” When there are more of
these pronouncements, please don’t
give them the energy of even your ponderings, much less your concern that a
subsequent attempt at bombings or any
other kind of major terrorist plot could
succeed.
There are some twists to this current situation. The plot itself is not

made—why don’t they simply make
claims of the plots and forego the effort
to carry them out? The ones who order
these strikes are too desperate to think
logically; moreover, they are convinced
that they will triumph “the next time,”
just as they cannot concede that their
era of power is over. It isn’t going out
with a whimper, but with a call for more
violence and death, but it IS ending.
Please do not ask when. As I have
explained, we know the outcome
because that is in the continuum, but
Earth’s field of potential is teeming with
activity and it is not possible to determine a specific date when all the energy streamers’ momentum will run its
zigzag course.
Will the situation in Lebanon lead to
nuclear war, WWIII? In numerous messages I have said there will be NO
nuclear war—NOTHING can change
this decree from Creator! One writer
stated that “WWIII is on,” citing the global war on terror, which has taken many
lives of troops and many, many more of
civilians, and the hundreds of thousands who will die from injuries,
radioactive poisoning, fatal birth defects
due to that, and post-trauma suicide. In
that respect, yes, it can be said that
“WWIII is on.” In the respect that in
many cases soul contracts have been
and are being amended to permit all
“innocents” to move forward in evolution
without experiencing all of the difficult
lessons they chose, it can be categorized as divine grace. Nevertheless, the
souls who reneged on their agreement
to join the light when their “heavy” roles
for planetary karmic balancing had
been achieved, have caused unnecessary widespread tragedies and suffering, and we weep with all who are
grieving.
The persistent belligerence of the
Zionists…. I must interrupt myself to
state emphatically that the Zionists do
NOT represent the majority of Israelis
or Jews living anywhere—by no means
are Zionists only in Israel—and they are
but one faction of the Illuminati carrying
out that cabal’s ages-old plan to dominate your world. To continue, their attitude is as we anticipated, and so is the
war insofar as duration, but the extent
of the destruction and the unconscionable disregard for human life
exceeded anticipations. Perhaps we
should have foreseen this, not from
Earth’s field of potential, where it cannot be registered in advance, but from
knowing what we do about the zealotry
and brutality of the Illuminati throughout
their entire history.
Please take comfort in knowing
that justice will be done both in heaven
and on Earth to all souls who are suffering and all those who are causing it.
Just as it is sad for us to see the terrible suffering and grieving, it is sad to
see those dark souls dooming themselves to their next experiencing as little
more than primitive matter, the point at
which they must start their inexorably
slow return to any degree of reasoning
ability so that no trace of inhumane proclivity is carried forward. We are inseparable souls in the Oneness of all, and
even though we will rejoice when their
reign of terror is over, there can be no
joy in knowing how justice will serve
them, however rightfully and solely by
the energy of their lifetime choices.

the Illuminati’s tenacity is especially evident: Will
Bush deflate the dollar 50% to cause the collapse
of his country’s economy as an excuse to invoke
martial law? We do not see martial law having any
headway in the field of potential, and since Bush’s
country is bankrupt, the economy can only
improve with the collapse of the current system,
wherein the Federal Reserve—an Illuminati private
banking consortium— along with individuals in this
dark cabal in other nations, are the “owners” of the
country.
It appears more likely that a global economic
recession rather than a depression will occur in
domino fashion, but even if that develops more
harshly, it will not be long-lasting and the principals who will lose the most are those with the
most to lose. Most of Earth’s peoples are in such
dire straits now—the millions who are struggling
to make ends meet and the billions who are
deprived of life’s most basic needs—that the
changes they will notice will be greeted joyously
and thankfully. And, please remember what I have
said in other messages: The universal law of
attraction never ceases, so concentrate on
having NOW what you want and it shall be
yours—and vice versa.
Will there be chaos when reallocation of the
world’s resources starts? Please take heart in
what I have said before, that the transition team of
economic experts will proceed so that confusion
will be minimal and comparatively short-lived.
Chaos ensues when a system collapses and no
one is prepared to institute a better system.
Now then, I know of Leo Wanta through monitors
in Nirvana, who know him to be of integrity and
acting in honor in his long-time dedication to
humanitarian causes through economic means.
He is trying to get into circulation trillions of dollars cached in Illuminati banks—those last two
words usually are synonymous—dollars they
amassed by lending money they don’t have, but
making loans anyway at usurious interest rates.

Also, the Federal Reserve (editor’s note: do you
know that the Federal Reserve is a private business and not the government—google it for more
info) buys for pennies each printed bill and lends
the money to the U.S. Treasury at the currency’s
face value, thus continually increasing the “national debt.” This untenable situation, like the no-foundation lending, has been a mainstay in the
Illuminati’s strategy to economically control the
populace, and it will be remedied in part by the
liberation of illegally amassed funds. I am not an
economist and don’t know all of the Illuminati’s
machinations in buying and selling many countries’ currency, which has added to their caches,
but I am aware that the profits from this and from
controlling all stock market activity are hidden in
foundations or other protected areas, and releasing their hold on these is part of reallocating all
resources worldwide.
Moving on to questions about melting
icecaps, record-breaking temperatures,
increasing severity of storms, prevalence of
geophysical events: As mentioned in previous
messages, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and
storms are Earth’s natural means of releasing
negativity that is stored as kinetic energy. The
other changes are a return to her original temperate climate globally; some low-lying areas will be
affected, but there will be equalizing effects and
no need for mass population relocation, much less
evacuation by circling spacecraft as some channeled messages state is a possibility. Please do
not go into fear when you read analyses with
grave projections!
Several questions pertain to new or planned
regulations or bills or policies in the United States,
such as Internet providers’ legal responsibility to
share with the government all communications
they handle; pharmaceutical companies’ safety
from liability for their products’ harmful or deadly
effects; vitamins and other natural nutritional supplements coming under FDA authority; micro-chipping passports, drivers’ licenses, etc.; criminalizing
truth-tellers who inform the media of their knowledge; presidential powers sidestepping court
orders and the Constitution; national ID cards; lists
of individuals who may or may not travel by air;
and now more “safety” restrictions on people who
do. ALL unjust and illegal laws and policies worldwide will be repealed as oppressive rulers are
replaced by the highly evolved beings who are
ready to step into leadership roles.
Now, on behalf of my mother and myself, I
express gratitude to the many readers who have
graciously written their appreciation for the messages and the books—these kind, thoughtful
acknowledgements are very meaningful to us.
Now, Mother, we can move on to your list.
SUZANNE: Do accurately interpreted astrological timeframes have specific and direct bearing
on the outcome of the many wars in progress, the
truth about 9/11 being widely known, the removal
of Bush and his cabinet from office, and mass landings of friendly ET forces; if so, to what extent can
we count on these events happening within the
given timeframes that major changes will occur?
MATTHEW: It is true that juxtaposition of
celestial bodies in their continuous movement
have an impact on other bodies, especially those
nearby, but in these situations questioned, that
influence is far secondary to Earth’s self-generated activity and also the measure of individuals’
beliefs about astrological effects, because those
thoughts shoot up into the mass consciousness.
Although energetic assets and opportunities are
more numerous or more pronounced during some
periods than others, in most situations there is no
compelling force that could guarantee a certain
outcome, especially at a specific time, because of
the many variables in operation that must be considered.
SUZANNE: OK! Are the Israeli forces using
new chemical or biological weapons?
MATTHEW: Yes, and the airborne effects are
being ameliorated to the extent possible by our
space family. Their technology is far more effective
used closely and directly, as it will be on your
planet in conjunction with your scientists to eliminate radioactive and other types of pollution; but
in combat zones there is no safety for these lighted souls and from the distance they must keep,
the impact of their beams is lessened by the levels of energy through which they pass.
SUZANNE: When is free, non-polluting energy technology coming as promised by some ETs?
The writer wants to disseminate this “through this
media” before commercialization.
MATTHEW: Like you, Mother, I can only
assume the “media” is the Internet, but in addition
to that uncertainty, I have no more information
about a date than your sources whose technology
will be shared, and they tell you it will be when it
is safe for all, and that time is not at hand.
SUZANNE: That’s exactly what they’re still
saying. A man who has decided on cremation still
would like to know if that or burial is the better
way to dispose of a body.
MATTHEW: Either is fine—it doesn’t matter
to the soul, who no longer needs the body’s service for experiencing. But, to extend this subject,
the manner in which a body is treated, whether
with respect or disregard or even desecration, is
important to the culture of the person, to the
entire civilization, as an indication of the sanctity
they hold for life itself. I’m not speaking of a grand
show—a pine box or simple little case are as
respectful as an elaborate casket or an ornate
urn—I’m speaking of honoring or dishonoring the
beliefs of the person and the family. Irrespective of
karmic implications, there is sadness for us in
mass burials to cover up massacres, huge pyres
to stop the spread of disease, corpse-littered battlefields and sea bottoms, intentional dispositions
of bodies so they never will be found. The departed souls grieve not for the bodies they left, but for
their beloved people who were denied tender
goodbyes.
SUZANNE: What must good people do to
insure that this midterm election [in the United
States] will be conducted with honesty and integrity?
MATTHEW: At this point, you can only
focus your thoughts on the character of government you want, feel thankful for this collection of fair, wise and just leaders as if they
already ARE the government, and send light to
all of Earth. Even if the electronic voting
machines were not specifically designed for tampering—they are, of course—the people who
count the votes are Illuminati-controlled. They
release whatever figures they want, thereby determining the winners, so this upcoming election will
be devoid of honesty and integrity. But, the farce
of two major parties to choose from—most members of both are either Illuminati themselves or
under that dark control—will end along with everything else that has dark underpinnings, so please
do not be discouraged. Cast your vote with the
vision of all countries governed by people who
represent the highest in human nature.
MATTHEW: The most basic and immensely valuable help that all can give is sending
light to Earth and all her life forms AND staying out of fear. Be discerning about all information by asking your godself, wherein the
purest truth lies. We have urged you to trust
the answers that come as intuition, instinct,
conscience, inspiration and aspiration.
Opening the communication line between your
soul and your consciousness is an essential
part of soul evolution, your journey of self-discovery.
And now for a short goodbye, with the assurance that our constant love and the bountiful
blessings of the universe are with you.
Love & Peace,
Suzanne Ward

“Do You Feel Responsible for
Other People’s Happiness?”
by Joyce and Barry Vissell
his past July, Joyce and I were
sitting on a sandy beach of the
Klamath River with a group of
participants during the first morning
meditation of our annual white water
adventure. Joyce asked each of us to
reflect on what we most wanted from
the 5-day trip. Even though we are the
leaders/facilitators, it is still important
to both of us to fully and vulnerably
participate. When it was my turn to
share, I told the group how it gives me
great joy to share the river with others, to witness each person as they
open their heart and quiet their mind
amidst the surrounding beauty, and
find their own joy in this amazing natural playground. Then I humbled myself and revealed the other side of this
process, the part of me that gets caught
in feeling responsible for other
people’s happiness. I admitted to an
unconscious attitude that it’s especially
up to me for people to enjoy themselves. Charley Thweatt, at our summer renewal retreat at Breitenbush Hot
Springs, sometimes sings the following line when the children are present,
“Who decides if I have a good time?”
Then everyone loudly sings, “I do, I
do.” In my heart I understand this quite
well, but there remains an unconscious
part of my soul that still occasionally
sings, “Who decides if you have a
good time? I do, I do!”
When I get trapped into this alternate song, I get myself into trouble.
When I feel overly responsible for
other people’s happiness, I try too
hard. For example, I know I can be
funny when I let the humor come naturally. When the over-responsible part
of me kicks in, I try too hard to be extra entertaining, and as a result I’m not
very funny (or so my children tell me).
Do you know anyone like this?
Many years ago, one of our first
spiritual mentors, Leo Buscaglia, told
me to stop doing a “soft shoe” dance
(i.e. trying extra hard) to get people to
T
like me. He then seriously said, “Barry,
relax, you’re very likeable just the way
you are. When you try to prove it, you
become obnoxious.” Those words really hit home.
As a middle child growing up in
a noisy family, I was seen if I moved
faster than everyone else. I was heard
if I made more noise than everyone
else. I was noticed when I forced myself to get noticed. Maybe some of you
reading this can relate.
But there’s a deeper aspect to my
“over-responsible” syndrome, and this
allows me to be even more humble. In
a mostly hidden part of my soul I carry
a message that I don’t deserve love
unless I give love. Even though I know
better than this when I’m aware and
conscious, there are many times I’m
not aware and conscious. At those
times, my worth is measured by how
much good I do, or for how much happiness I bring to others. So then I try
too hard to make people happy, or I
don’t give myself enough quiet, quality time. I forget that I am loved and
lovable for who I am, that I’m a human being, not a human doing. I forget that I am immersed in an ocean of
love. I am not separate from that ocean.
I forget that I have a divine inheritance,
and I don’t ever have to earn the right
to love.
Our greatest responsibility is to
feel love, which is to know our true
selves, and to be genuinely at peace in
this world. It is from this inner abundance that we naturally give to others.
There is no breathing out unless we
first breathe in. As the flight attendants
always admonish, if we do not first
place the oxygen mask onto our own
face, there can be no helping anyone
else with theirs. We deserve to feel the
infinite wealth of love that is the core
of our being.
Sometime in the middle of the
river trip, we were floating through a
quiet stretch of water when Jack, a
middle-aged man in another raft,
called out to me in
a loud voice, “Hey
Barry, look. I’m
having such a
f a bu l o u s t i m e
right now and
you’re not doing
anything.” Everyone laughed at our
group’s inside joke as I smiled and relaxed a little more inside, let this truth
once again sink in, and then I resumed
my peaceful reverie while rowing my
boat gently down the stream.

Make Change Work
Many of my clients are bright,
successful people — yet they often
consult with me, because they have a
difficult time reaching goals, changing habits, or managing emotions.
Maybe you have also bumped into
challenges, when trying to quit smoking, or attempting to stop some other
pesky habit. Or possibly, you’ve been
striving to reach some cherished goal,
only to find yourself back where you
started from….
When we want change, we usually know what actions we should take
— whether it is a new exercise routine,
a healthier diet or more satisfying relationships. Yet the older, emotional cur-

we set out with the
best of intentions,
while getting results to the contrary. For
your plans to succeed over time, all the
layers of your personality — conscious
and unconscious, emotional and rational — need to be considered.
Marry Head and Heart
Have you ever noticed how “making yourself” do something tends to
have a short life-span? You may be able
to “discipline” yourself for a while,
jump out of bed at five am and go for
that morning run, whether you want to
or not. Hey — if that works for you —
congratulations! Don’t change a
thing… however if you find that commitment to new goals peters out after
the initial enthusiasm, you may need to
look a little deeper. Your other than conscious mind also has to be convinced
that your goal suits you. Otherwise,
nature’s unbending commitment to
your survival protects or prevents any
behavior that it interprets as a threat
to you.
I’m reminded of my client Susan,
whose high stress job left no time to
express her creative talent — until she
started developing debilitating rashes
that forced her to take time off work.
More than likely every part of you,
conscious or unconscious, has the best
of intentions — yet unless we get them
to work in unison, internal conflicts are
likely. Here it really pays to go slow
— in order to go fast. Marrying the
different parts of you, and with that,
heart and mind, opens the door to a
whole new world — and your personal
power soars. Suddenly, the forces that
were at war, begin uniting their magic
in your favor, and the sky is no longer
the limit….

and right.
So, we’d love to start by sharing the 2 most
common mistakes that most practitioners make
when they share about what they do:
Mistake #1: You share your title, and that’s
it. For example: “I am a chiropractor.”
This is a mistake because people will often
assume that they know what you do, based on
past experiences with chiropractors. They might
think, “I got a chiropractic session 5 years ago
that was really uncomfortable. Therefore, working with you will be uncomfortable.” Ironically,
you may offer a gentle, comfortable session, but
they’re no longer open to hearing about it.
Mistake #2: You share what you do differently each time. You may even try to channel
your explanation and you may go on and on and
on and on… about it until their eyes roll to the
back of their heads and they totally zone out.
At that point you’ve totally lost your potential client. And the sad thing is that everyone
loses. Because they might really benefit from
your services. But if they’re not compelled by
the way you share what you do, healing doesn’t
happen.
3 Simple Secrets to Confidently Sharing What
You Do
Secret #1: Don’t share about what you do;
share about how you can help them.
Secret #2: Make it 30 seconds or less. It’s
Jesse Koren & Sharla
called an elevator speech. If they start asking
questions, you can start sharing more. Like, what
your title is, etc.
Secret #3: Memorize your “what you do
statement,” and share it like it’s a poem. This
allows you to stay connected with the person
you’re with while you share what you do.
Hopefully, this article will point you in the
right direction. But we’d love to offer you even
more support. At the Rejuvenate Your Practice 2 Day Intensive, you’ll have the time and
support to create your own powerful “what do
you do statement.”
You’ll also learn how to have “heartselling
conversations” where your clients will literally
talk themselves into working with you. You’ll
learn how to gracefully handle concerns like “I
can’t afford it,” and you’ll get over your fear
around stating how much you charge.

iving in the body is something
every one of us learns to do
from birth, yet how many of
us live in our bodies with intention and
skill? One of the insights that emerged
over the past 35 years of my life as a
dancer, choreographer, teacher, is the
understanding that a physically embodied mind is the seat of personal
power and is the basis of directive,
connected, and fulfilling living. This
awareness has informed and enriched
even the most challenging areas of my
life, providing a consistent frame from
which to make choices and act with
intentionality.
Having a body can be an amazing experience. It can also be painful,
embarrassing or an extraordinary inconvenience. As obvious as it may be,
we lose track of the fact that it determines the foundational quality of our
life since it is the gateway to experience. And yet, there is little attention
paid to how we live in the body, to the
fundamentals of this vital relationship
that forms our living experience.
“Living In The Body” is a workshop series that I created after years
of examining the foundations of experience and studying “how” the mind
is embodied. This coming Fall I will
be offering it again for people with issues of eating. Its purpose is to guide
people into a peaceful and effective relationship between their mind and their
body. In it people are shown ways to
meet their body and to infuse it with a
level of agreement. Then, their mind
and their body can stop acting like

strangers speaking different languages
and become more like lovers, deeply
immersed in mutual support. It provides ways to speak so that the body
listens, and it fosters a direct connection to the feelings, responses and intelligence of the body so that the mind
listens as well.
The nature of the mind is boundless and the nature of the body is
bound. Together they form an amazing potential. It is this potential that
we want to engage. Embodied mind is
the seat of personal power and leads
us into the ability to be directive and
creative in our living experience.
Drawing from the rich physical
experience of my years in dance, as
well as from my extensive research
into the nature of mind, training in hypnotherapy and NLP (Neurolinguistic
Programming), I have developed this
body of work which guides people into
skillful awareness and action in this relationship. Through eight weekly
classes, private counseling, and a
weekend intensive, we discover ways
to meet the body with agreement, compassion and freshness, opening the
door to freedom, choice, and personal
power in our lives.
Each series draws people with a
range of experiences and issues including chronic overeating, under-eating,
emotional eating, obesity, yo-yo dieting and eating-related illness and disorders. They come and find that this
work is proactive. It produces a strong
paradigm shift out of the current cultural agreements of helplessness and
into an enriched strength through the

ity, Joy and Faith is a dynamic new energy balancing method
that will assist you to feel better, physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. You are an energy being! And
in truth, everything is energy. The
LEAP energy healing course teaches
you how to detect energy balances as
well as offering you balancing procedures for your Body, Mind and Spirit.
Your luminous aura is a combination of your etheric, emotional, mental and spiritual energy fields. The
brightness and magnetic quality of your
aura is determined by the well being of
your energy fields. The first layer of
your aura is the etheric energy field;
the source of your vitality. The second
layer of your aura is the emotional
energy field; the source of your emotions. The third layer of your aura is
your mental energy field; the source
of your thoughts. The fourth layer of
your aura is your spiritual energy
field; the source of your divine connection. Throughout the energy fields there
are chakras which are energy stations
that take in and discharge energy from
your aura. Your chakra health is vital
to your well being on all levels.
T
LEAP teaches a simple and accurate method to determine energy
imbalances in the energy fields and
chakras. This method, known as kinesiology or muscle testing, is a natural tool for connecting with a sacred
guidance or intelligent life force.
Through the LEAP method of muscle
testing you learn how to obtain a yes
or no answer regarding what strengthens or weakens the energy fields. It
teaches you how to identify blocked
energy in the fields and offers a menu
for healing and balancing your body,
emotions, mind and spirit. LEAP also
offers an energy healer’s tool-box so
you can support your healing path with
the Vibrational remedies of flower essences, Bach Flower’s color, sound,
life affirmations, meditation and more.
The Life Essence Awakening
Process or LEAP into Vitality, Joy
and Faith is founded in a knowingness
and conviction that there is a sacred
guidance available to us for our life
path. We nurture our relationship with
Spirit through focusing our thoughts
and attention in our heart which in turn
increases the vibration of love, light
and wisdom in our life. We then live a
spirit driven life, full of inspiration, joy
and light- filled beingness.

To All Martial Artists:
GET INVOLVED and Make MARTIAL ARTS Great!
by Daniel Feldman
T
HE ORIGINAL INTENTION
for a new “Martial Arts” page
in
Connection
Magazine was to create a
hard copy homepage for
Santa Cruz’s diverse and
substantial martial arts
community. Our strategy is
two-fold: to provide the
community with a portal for
informative articles and
timely
announcements
(which we have been
doing), and to provide a
low-cost advertising vehicle for schools and teachers. As you can see, many
fine schools are now listed
in The Martial Arts
Directory of Schools and
Teachers here, and we
warmly invite more schools
and teachers to add their
listing. The cost of the listing is only $20/mo. There is
even a further discount if
you pay up front. Any of
you who advertise your
classes know that is a
good bargain!
As for articles, so far we have
featured a different school in each
issue, which has given the schools
good exposure. For many of the arti-
cles, I interviewed the head coach of
a school and then wrote the article
myself. Then, as my schedule con-
tracted my available time, we invited
all teachers to submit their own articles. So far, several teachers have
taken advantage of that opportunity.
Readers might also enjoy first person
accounts by martial arts students
about what led them to study a martial art, what they like
about their art, and how it
has affected their lives. We
also welcome announcements and articles from
schools and individuals
about martial art-related
events happening at local
schools, as well as, in the
Bay Area.
The bottom line is: I
need the Santa Cruz
Martial Arts Community
to proactively get involved
in producing interesting
content for this page,
which
Connection
Magazine has so generously made available. Let’s
make good use of this
opportunity. Please contact
Connectionn Magazine at

them at: [email protected] to let them know
that you would like to submit a 500 word (or less)
article for this Martial Arts
Column. This is such a wonderful
community paper with all of the best
intentions for everybody. We hope to
hear from you soon.

happen next. Everyone sits there “hallucinating” the agreed-upon next
steps, owner(s), and timelines. It
sounds basic, but it is all too common.
Instead, the best way to avoid
this muddle is to focus on the elements of clear agreements, verifying
each element during the meeting
(including “conditions of satisfaction” and “by when?”), then transfer
that action item to an “existence system” that can serve as group memory
and inform the participants of commitments and expectations. The creation of shared documents or a tracking system that stays top-of-mind
will provide both support and
accountability.
Whatever the challenge—from
lousy agenda-setting to lack of honest communication—the most
important question you can ask
is,“How can we improve the quality
of our meetings?” Learning and
improving, like risk-taking, must be
a priority and get rewarded as such,
or it’ll be “same old, same old” each
time you meet. And, now what we
have (virtually) met, what will you
do differently?

n excellent compilation of the facts
providing powerful evidence for
unimagined consequences of greenhouse gases on climate change — a much
needed wake-up call. Based on Al Gore’s
book and slide show of the same title, this
important film combines science, dramatic
flair and brilliantly clear and entertaining explanations. We also gain an understanding
of how he came to tell this cautionary tale,
his roots and motivation. He speaks with
more energy and passion than he ever did
while on the campaign trail (thank to the film’s
director, Davis Guggenheim?). This is an
engaging, startling, and sobering presentation. Though some of Gore’s conclusions
and interpretations are debatable, the film
manages to bring the message home, building a lawyerly case for the importance of talking immediate corrective action, and without
sounding too alarmist. There’s now enough
consensus in the scientific community to inspire willful and broad-based action. Go see
this film! (1 hr 40 min).

his Johnny Depp-driven sequel definitely works for the box office, but may
leave fans of the initial installment
wondering what all the ruckus is about?
There’s simply no way this film will live up to
expectations. Sure, some good summer fun,
with familiar characters and Disneyland
themes. This film plays even more like a
theme park ride, but at least you don’t get
sprayed with water. Much of the initial originality and charm has worn off, and what was
clever and cool last summer seems like the
same ship with a new coat of paint. Johnny
Depp is still a genius with his “Keith
Richards”-inspired version of Captain Jack
Sparrow, and aye, with another bottle of rum,
and a decent plot, the rest of the fare would
go down smooth enough (2 hrs 31 min).

oody Allen’s sense of humor gets
darker and darker, but his story
writing skills are no less in evidence in Scoop, where a young reporter
takes her sources to the grave. Scarlett
Johansson gives a smart performance (probably despite Mr. Allen’s usual directorial request of her to act like Dianne Keaton), and
this metaphysical, slightly screwball, murder
mystery playhouse comes alive with intrigue
and foolery. Of course, none of Woody’s past
few films are destined to become classics
nor will they match his earlier work for pure
comedic value, but this one comes closer
than most (1 hr 36 min).

liver Stone handles a difficult subject with great sensitivity, giving
viewers a gripping experience of
what it might have been like for two Port Authority police officers on 9/11 when they
rushed into the burning World Trade Center
to help rescue people. There is much more
here than you might expect, as these officers become trapped themselves and struggle
to maintain hope in this true-to-life account.
Through an up close and personal view into
the suffering of the 9/11 horror, and the triumph of our recovery, this film may help establish a sense of community around the
healing and courage of those who were
touched by that fateful day, allowing us all to
discover meaning in the midst of the madness. The film is more a human portrait than
an exploitative drama or sensational documentary, though it may stir up the same feelings that got our Feds into the so-called War
Against Terror(ism). If you can endure the pain
and suffering of others, go see it (2 hrs 5 min).

Lively Letters
ABC: Tell the Truth About 9/11
Contributed by Working Assets
On Sept.10 & 11, ABC—which is
owned by DISNEY—is planning to air a
“docu-drama” called “Path to 9/11,” which
is being billed as “an objective telling of
the events of 9/11.” In fact, the film was
written by an unabashed conservative
who twists the facts to blame President
Clinton.
In fact, the list of counterterrorism
initiatives undertaken by the Clinton
administration is lengthy and
comprehensive. Regrettably, the record
shows that most of these efforts were
watered down or abandoned by the Bush
administration when they came into office.
History will also record that President
Bush was the one who received —and
while on vacation, chose to ignore —a
Presidential Daily Briefing on August 6,
2001 entitled “Bin Laden Determined to
Strike in US.”
ABC’s new six-hour film was apparently
screened in advance only to conservative
bloggers and journalists —and received
extensive praise from none other than
Rush Limbaugh. ABC is advertising the film
as being “based on the 9/11 Commission
report” -- yet also admits that it’s a “docudrama,” in which writers and producers
are free to invent and distort facts. Former
counterterrorism czar Richard Clarke has
already completely refuted one of the
key scenes of the movie.
It’s simply stunning to think that as
this fall’s election approaches, a major
television network would devote six hours
of prime-time programming to air such a
slanted and inaccurate program. There is
simply no way that a conservative writer,
with an anti-Clinton axe to grind, should
be allowed to use public airwaves to
broadcast a gross distortion of the truth
—especially on the anniversary of the
worst day in our history.
Call to action:
Send a message to ABC asking them
to cancel the show. Go to this website:

TRANSFORMATIVE VISIONS
Astrol o gy fo r September 2 006
S
eptember opens with three astrological events. Saturn opposes
Neptune (last time in 1971-73), a
lunar eclipse on the 7th is followed by a
solar eclipse on the 22nd. We have entered into a great confrontation. On a
worldwide level we are faced with a stark
reality of our condition. The challenge and
opportunity of this time is to walk through
the next two years with a sustaining vision of our interrelatedness and create
solutions and possibilities, in spite of the
despairing situations that appear before
us. It is an awakening time! Every situation that we deal with creatively and
squarely, seeing it’s root and historical
causes, will transform our world and our
own personal lives.
With Pluto going direct on the 4th
and a lunar eclipse taking place on the
7th, aligning with Uranus, it is a cathartic
time. Fortunately, Mars enters Libra on the
7th, which can help diplomatic actions.
Eclipses are times of strong energetic
alignments for planet Earth, giving us
more access to the subconscious and
higher consciousness, the masculine and
feminine aspects of ourselves, a collision
with our histories and our visions for the
future. In ancient times it was an ominous
time, but as we fully enter the Aquarian
Age, our attunement to higher knowledge
allows us the potential for clearing and
conscious growth during the eclipses.
Certainly, critical and transforming events
will erupt this month. By mid September
there are serious diplomatic efforts to bring
peace, but too much unfinished business
from the past doesn’t allow a halt of the
furious tension in the Mid East this month.
With the Saturn/Neptune opposition and the opportunity for humanity to
come to grips with the distorted values of
corrupt power, it is interesting to reflect
upon the oil problems, ruled by Neptune,
(Alaskan pipeline, war etc.). A confrontation with oil problems is a confrontation
with energy, wealth and power worldwide.
The fall equinox on Friday, the
22nd, takes place shortly after a solar
eclipse at the last degree of Virgo. This is
a very potent time of dismantling the dominant powers that be. As we move into the
Age of Aquarius, the old power structures
are coming to an end.
Twelve Opportunities:
Aries (Mar 20-Apr 19): The challenge
for you will be in the work place. A situation breaks apart your routine challenging you to change. You find yourself having a strong emotional reaction to the
situation. A past situation is influencing
this one and it is a great opportunity to
free yourself from the past influence.
Taurus (Apr 20-May 20): This is a time
of breaking through to a new level of expression and creativity. Do what you can
to support more energy moving through
you. Watch what you eat, and meditate
to sustain this opening. The potential is
there for you to present yourself in a new
way. Let the power move through you.
Gemini (May 21-Jun 20): The focus
point for you right now is balance between your career, community activity
and the needs of the family, your home
and deeper self. During this Saturn/Neptune time you must make clear choices
to move forward with one or two things
and let go of the others. Let yourself
ground and make real a dream.
Cancer (Jun 21–Jul 21): This month

Cats and Stress
by Anne Singer
ats have a lower threshold of
stress than humans. Things not
stressful to us can actually be
painful to a cat. A cat’s sense of smell is
so developed that it makes ours seem
virtually nonexistent.
A cat can be supersensitive to
sharp smells, loud noise, extremes in
temperature and it can be very sensitive
to emotional stress. The loss of a loved
one, whether it is another pet or a human, can leave a cat deeply depressed.
When cats are faced with lots of stress,
their energy reserves are drained to a
precarious point. Cats in stress for a long
time become tense, nervous and then
begin to withdraw. Cats will be unable to

has been used up dealing with stress.
Here are some ways to cope with
stress:
1. Surprise — First tell your cat
what you are going to do, e.g., touching,
turning on a light, etc.
2. Loud Noise — Ask visitors to
speak in calm and soothing tones. If there
is construction or repair in part of the
house, put a radio near the cat’s resting
place and turn on some soft classical
music.
3. Introducing New Visitors —
Person should sit down and first give eye
and voice contact before touching the cat.
Then she/he should put out one hand only,

22): This month you
are in a phase of
completing, clearing,
reflecting. You are

spiritual insights. As

to yourself, you are rewarded with energy as Mars enters Libra. You are coming into a time of doing relationships differently.
Scorpio (Oct 23-Nov 21): This month
you meet new friends. You enjoy your
social life. You are finding a balance in
your work and your private life, instead
of being caught in extremes. This month
you allow yourself to recognize the deep
patterns that cause sadness in you, and
you begin to let go.
Sagittarius (Nov 22-Dec 20): You are
involved in a life transition whose form
will start to manifest as Jupiter enters
Sagittarius in November. Now you consider the alignment of your work and your
deepest values and essence. Sudden
situations with family members need your
attention. Things are moving quickly now.
Capricorn (Dec 21- Jan 19): The emphasis this month is on learning, teaching, putting things in order to communicate your beliefs and your travels. Feel
your beliefs shape your reality. Unexpected situations with schedules, siblings
and neighbors challenge you to be flexible. This month you feel like there is a
victory and a breakthrough. People appreciate you.
Aquarius (Jan 20-Feb 17): This is the
month to attune to your money situation.
Take action to make sure that your worth
is being compensated for financially.
Share your feelings with another. Engage
with your inventive, creative self. Let your
inspiration lead you.
Pisces (Feb 18-Mar 19): With the lunar
eclipse on the 7th taking place in Pisces,
you will be affected by the powerful
forces of this alignment. Some people
respond by feeling tired. Then rest is
needed. If you give yourself time on the
6th and the 7th to be quiet, meditate and
reflect on your life and your direction,
then this can be a time of revelation and
awakening. You can receive insights and
answers to your questions.

4. Change to a New Home —
Move the cat into one room that is furnished with old, familiar furniture. Your
cat’s litter box, food and water dishes,
toys, scratching post, etc., should all be
in this room.
It is up to pet owners to recognize
these stress situations and then make an
effort to eliminate, as best you can, the
stresses in the environment that you can
control.

He waited.
And someone did find it: Ben!
Ben isn't a person,
but a very intelligent border collie dog.
Ben picked up the bottle in his mouth and
took it home to his human friend, Brian.
Brian read the note and rushed to find
Robert. He also called an ambulance,
which came and took Robert to hospital.
Robert got better, thanks to Ben. He will
