GOLF
Bring the Clubs
with you...
I
f you’re here for meetings, Jakarta has
several excellent reasons to pack the
golf bag. As almost twenty world-class golf
courses, affordable green fees, and excellent
clubhouse facilities awaiting for you.
Given their quality, Jakarta’s courses may well
be the best value for money in the Asia Pacific
region starting from the Royal Jakarta Golf
Course, located around the Air Force Base
airport.
The scenic round... Rancamaya in Ciawi, Bogor is a must. Situated less than an
hour drive via the Jagorawi toll road from Jakarta, it is perhaps the most relaxing
and scenic course, offering panoramic views of Mount Salak, Mount Pangrango and
Bogor City. The Ted Robinson-designed site is an 18-hole championship course,
centred on a lake around which the undulating landscape snakes. Rancamaya Golf
& Country Club has been voted by hospitality Asia Platinum Award as ‘The Best Golf
Course in South East Asia”.
The challenging round... If you’re a golfer looking for an extra challenge, Jagorawi
Golf & Country Club (JGCC) is the only golf club in the country offering 45 holes
of championship golf divided into the Old Course, the New Course, and the 9
hole Z-Nine. Similar to Rancamaya, JGCC is located in the Cikeas River Valley
approximately 45 minutes from Jakarta. (The Country Club offers a range of
activities from tennis to trekking for non-golfing guests and family).
The championship round... The Jack Nicklaus-designed Bumi Serpong Damai
(BSD) Course in one of the best in Indonesia if not in Asia. BSD was shortlisted by
Hertz is International Golf Travel Award as one of the best five of the Asia Pacific
Courses of the Year 2000.
The design was inspired by and modelled on Nicklaus’s favourite features from
some of the world’s premier courses. Another perk that comes with this course
in the availability of meeting rooms that can accommodate up to 1,000 people,
perhaps a suitable or even preferable means of combining business with pleasure.

Eating in
the spicy islands...
I
f in Italy... when in Rome... you would eat pasta... certamente! If in Indonesia...
when in Jakarta... it would not make sense to pass up on a local cuisine that has
evolved over centuries and is based on a unique range of ingredients, preparations
and menus.
And amongst those ingredients are the herbs, flavours and spices after which the
fabled tropical archipelago was originally named.
Cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper, chili, garlic, bawang merah, lemon grass,
salam, kecap manis and others, all find their way into Indonesian food, chopped,
ground or pestled in various volumes and combinations. The rich variety that is the
melting pot of Jakarta finds varied expression in the cooking pots of its inhabitants,
with regional influences aplenty in the capital’s menus.

it’s easier to get around the city than
in the business-hour choked streets.
But advocates simply pin back their
ears and hit a town that caters to
every entertainment, imbibing and
celebratory mood.
Recently the Sydney Morning Herald
described Jakarta as “Asia’s Leading
Once Nightlife Capital”. They got that
one right... Jakartans have a reputation
for enjoying the night... it’s a party
town.
The city encourages diverse needs
and preferences. Whether you feel
like lounging with a late night drink,
singing your heart out at a live music
bar, or dancing your stress away at the
town’s hippest hangouts, Jakarta has
everything and more to offer.
Happy hours aplenty across the capital
attract workers and executives, Indonesia and expatriate alike. Sports bars,
piano bars, Irish pubs... take your pick.
More abstemious members of society
head towards the many extravagant
malls where Indonesia’s coffee culture
is in evidence and Jawa arabica and
now Kopi Luwak is the preferred triple.
Jakarta’s many street stalls provide
a late night, early morning fuel stop
for hungry clubbers... typical snacks
include the Indonesian specialities
such as ‘satay, nasi goreng, bubur
ayam, mie kangkung and martabak’,
and restorative Jakarta specialty ‘sop
buntut’ or oxtail soup.

MARINE
the islandtemptation
I
ndonesia, an archipelago of over
17,000 islands, provides endless
marine, swimming and diving options.
Wherever you are there is always a
seaside destination readily accessible
via a short car trip or boat ride.
The closest destination to Jakarta is
Thousand Islands. Contras to its name,
Thousand Island consist of 108 small
islands scattered about the Bay of
Jakarta in the Java Sea, most of which
are accessible via a one or two hour
ferry ride from Ancol Marina. The most
popular of these islands are Bidadari
and Ayer.
Bidadari Island was once a Dutch VOC
fort but now tourists enjoy the salty
breeze and relax in resort bungalows.
The Island also has a unique facility
offering Outward Bound training,
perhaps handy as a team building
exercise.
If time is of the essence, Ayer Island
is perhaps the better gateway option,
about a half hour boat ride from Ancol
Marina and renowned for its stunning
shores and well-equipped floating
wooden cottages decorated with
traditional Asmat textiles and artefacts.
At Ayer, adventurous types can enjoy
a range of outdoor activities such as
canoeing, jet skiing and cycling.
For divers, Kotok Island on the western
edge of Thousand Island is highly
recommended. The Island has pristine
waters and undamaged reefs abundant
in gorgonains and soft corals, and
also faces an open sea, a good spot to
see schools of sweetlips, turtles and
sharks. Thousand Island’s colonial
history also adds to this place’s diving
appeal. There are wooden shipwrecks
to be found around Kotok as well as
Gasonglada Island.
Whether you are looking for a relaxing
fishing trip or a more dynamic diving
experience, Thousand Island delivers
a diverse and mulitidimensional easy
gateway destination.

SHOPPING
Wall-to-wall
Mall-to-mall
T
wo or three decades back Jakartans would fly to Singapore or Hong Kong to
shop and party... now the reverse is true.
And we have the centre of Jakarta social life, the mall, to thanks for it.
There are malls to match most strata of society, with outlets and product to
meet most pockets. But nowhere is the impact of Indonesia’s continued growth
more evident than in upscale Jakarta, where affluence and good taste converge
in a fashionable, sophisticated urban society catered to by international designer
outlets in glamorous mall. And it’s all affordable luxury.
Shopping is Jakarta’s favourite past-time. Malls and department stores are not
mere marketplaces; they also act as the city’s premier social hubs.
Local slang has coined a word to describe it - nongkrong - or ‘haging out with your
friend, just chatting’. And then ‘nongkrong’ plus drinking coffee - kopi - becomes
‘ngopi’. That’s how Jakarta slang or ‘bahasa gaul’ evolves, and its little wonder
words have emerged to describe an activity so central to life in the city.
