@radyjcc
Message from the President
& the Executive Director
2014-15 was an exciting year at the
Rady JCC. We saw continued growth in
membership, community engagement
and program participation. This year
is shaping up to be a good one as we
prepare for the future. Construction
continues on the David and Ruth
Elliott Garfinkel
Gayle Waxman
Asper Early Learning Centre. The board
President
Executive Director undertook an ambitious strategic
planning exercise to guide the Rady JCC’s role in community life into the
future. Entitled the Time is Now in Winnipeg, this plan provides the blueprint
for the Rady JCC to build our community in new and innovative ways, and we
have already began the process of implementing this ambitious plan.
It feels as if we are at a turning point. We need to reach out beyond our
walls to build a strong and lasting sense of community. We need to ensure
every dollar raised is invested back into the community in the most
impactful way possible. The Rady JCC is well positioned to do so.
We have the capacity to reach families, children, youth, and newcomers
and connect them to the community. And, we are well positioned to ensure
our seniors and people with special needs and those who are financially
disadvantaged fully participate in community life.
Every year, the Rady JCC receives support from many caring people. We are
fortunate to have 500 volunteers and I would like to thank them all and
wish a Mazel Tov to all of them.
We are fortunate to work with an exceptional board. Thank you to all
of you. We would also like to add personal thanks to the Rady staff, the
Directors and Managers. There are a number of people who have provided
us with unwavering support . Special thanks to Marjorie Blankstein, Karyn
Lazareck, Debbie Gray, Ken Kronson, Blair Worb, and our Past Presidents,
particularly Jeff Lieberman, Murray Gilfix, Morley Hoffman, Eric Sawyer,
Danny Stoller, Larry Hecht, Hester Kroft and Heather Pullan.
We are excited about our community’s future and the Rady JCC’s role.
I look forward to sharing it with all of you.
Elliott Garfinkel, President Gayle Waxman, Executive Director

Internationally acclaimed Jewish films and moving documentaries, representing the diversity of the Jewish

Featured Films
Félix and Meira
Labyrinth of Lies
The Nuremberg trials, held right after WWII ended, are famous, and the 1961 Eichmann trial in
Jerusalem is known to most. Arguably just as important were the Frankfurt Auschwitz trials, which
also took place in the early 1960s but which are practically unknown. Labyrinth of Lies sheds
light on this little known story. Young public prosecutor Johann Radmann comes across some
documents that help initiate the trial against some members of the SS who served in Auschwitz.
But both the horrors of the past and the hostility shown towards his work bring Johann close to a
meltdown. It is nearly impossible for him to find his way through this maze; everybody seems to
have been involved or guilty. (Germany, 2014)
Wedding Doll
Hagit, a young woman with mild mental deficiency, works in a toilet-paper factory. She lives
with her mother Sarah, a divorcee who gave up her life for her daughter. Hagit strives for
independence and Sarah is torn between her desire to protect her, and her own will to live.
When a relationship develops between her and the son of the factory owner, Hagit hides it from
her mother. The announcement of the closing of the factory shakes Hagit and Sarah’s life and
jeopardizes Hagit’s love story. (Israel, 2015)
Theodore Bikel: In the Shoes of Sholom Aleichem
Portraits of two beloved icons—Sholom Aleichem and Theodore Bikel—are woven together in this
enchanting new documentary. The two men have much in common: wit, wisdom and talent, all
shot through with deep humanity and Yiddishkeit. The new film Theodore Bikel: In the Shoes of
Sholom Aleichem combines Bikel’s charismatic storytelling and masterful performances with a
broader exploration of Aleichem’s remarkable life and work. (USA, 2014)

Felix and Meira is the story of an unconventional romance between two people living vastly different
lives mere blocks away from one another. Meira, a young Hasidic housewife and mother, and Félix, a
man lost in mourning the recent death of his father, unexpectedly meet at a local bakery in Montreal’s
Mile End district. What starts as an innocent friendship becomes more serious as the two wayward
strangers find comfort in one another. As Felix opens Meira’s eyes to the world outside of her tightknit Orthodox community, her desire for change becomes harder for her to ignore, ultimately forcing
her to choose: remain in the life that she has always known or give it all up to be with Félix. This film is
a poignant tale of self-discovery, a fascinating glimpse into the Hasidic community, and a modern love
story set against backdrops both familiar and unknown. (Canada, 2014)

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 22, 7:30 P.M.
This special concert will feature
talented members of our
community spanning several
generations. Much like the famous
Ed Sullivan show of years gone by,
this unique program will feature
a variety of acts from singing
sensation Justin Odwak, to the
humour and songs of Ian Dimerman
to the melodious voice of Cantor
Tracy Kasner Greaves. The show
brings together veterans and
newcomers in a way never seen
and heard before. Besides, if you
ever wondered whether Ed Sullivan

find out.

Her father Michael Felsenbaum
founded the Yiddish theater of Beltz
in 1989 and is a prominent figure
in Yiddish culture. Well known as a
poet and playwright, he has written
many of the songs in Vira’s repertoire.
Vira’s mother Fania was also a prolific
performer and singer of Yiddish and

the audience for their eighth

new songs.
From the age of 13 until her
immigration to Israel in 1991 she
sang in the Beltz Yiddish Theatre
and also performed solo concerts
throughout the former USSR.
After immigrating to Israel at
age 16 she earned her BA in

she graduated with honours from

first appearance at Mameloshen.
MONDAY, JUNE 27, 7:30 P.M.
A Tribute to
The Barry Sisters
Well known musical artists Shayla
Fink and Debbie Maslowsky return
to the Mameloshen stage, to pay
musical tribute to one of the
greatest acts of the last century, The
Barry Sisters. They last performed
this show to a sellout Mameloshen
crowd in 2010, Debbie and Shayla
bring alive the music that made
Claire and Myrna Bagelman famous.
Backed by a live band, the authentic
arrangements of songs familiar to
all will warm your Yiddish heart
and soul. Shayla Fink is well known
for her work with Canada’s highly
acclaimed award winning klezmer
band FINJAN. Debbie Maslowsky
is an award winning actress and
performer, regularly seen on the
stages of The Royal Manitoba
Theatre Centre and Rainbow Stage.
Performances will take place at the
Winnipeg Art Gallery. Transportation
available for seniors.
If you would like to be on the mailing list, please call Debbie Figowy (204) 477-7534 or email [email protected]
Tickets will be available for sale on May 11, 2016 at the Rady JCC online at www.radyjcc.com or (204) 477-7510.

Yoga Yeladim with Ardith
Yoga Yeladim™ is a style of Yoga that was created by
Haris Lender, ERYT 500. Yoga Yeladim (YY) is the only
national Jewish Kids Yoga program in North America!
It is the ultimate fusion of Jewish learning, body
awareness and spiritual understanding all rolled up
into one yoga mat. We have designed a curriculum

engaging Jewish environment. Children learn the poses,
breathing practices, moral behaviour, how to meditate,
and so much more through this unique and high energy
class. YY incorporates lots of fun and original music,
plus all of the traditional benefits of Yoga. YY is stress
management for kids. Yoga Yeladim will be taught by
trained instructor Ardith Henoch.

Watercolour for the Absolute Beginner:
Instructor: Ruth Livingston
Have you ever thought it might be fun to try painting? Are you curious whether you
have the talent?
Now is your chance to experience a calm and meditative hour or two while learning a new
skill with watercolour artist Ruth Livingston.
Watercolour is a wonderful medium for older adults as it requires the confidence to take risks and
give up absolute control... one never knows exactly what the painting will look like until it is dry. That
being said, this lesson for beginners is virtually failsafe. Take advantage of this opportunity to learn a
new skill and you will go home with a completed painting ready to frame.
Pre-registration is required: Fee includes all materials

Yoga Shalom
THURSDAY, 1:05 P.M.

Yoga Shalom is the blending of two ancient spiritual practices. It pairs the
poses of Yoga, a Hindu form of spirituality with the meditations and music of
Jewish tradition. It is a gentle form of exercise and is open to anyone interested
in relaxing their body, calming their mind and nurturing their spirit. Yoga
Shalom is meant to be adaptable to various skill levels and comfort levels.
The program has adaptations for those with limited mobility. It helps us
along our path to self-awareness, understanding, acceptance, wholeness and
contentment in our life’s journey.

When Lucy talks about her husband George, she
likes to tell people about what he can do.
George has vascular dementia. While symptoms of
the disease have impacted on the couple’s life, both
Lucy and George maintain a positive outlook and
find ways to keep involved and active. That includes
participating in the Minds in Motion® program, now
being offered at the Rady JCC.
BENEFITS OF THE PROGRAM; PARTICIPANTS
MAY EXPERIENCE:
•
•
•
•
•
improved balance, mobility, flexibility and alertness
increased confidence in physical and social activities
sharpened mental functioning
improved sleep habits
mutual support and learning from others
WHAT CAN I EXPECT?
“The great thing about Minds in Motion is that George
and I can participate together,” says Lucy. “We were
starting to feel isolated because activities we can do as
a couple are few and far between. ”The physical activity
segments of the program are helping to get the couple
back into shape and both Lucy and George particularly
enjoyed a recent musical segment that involved
drumming and singing. “Music is important – it gives
you a boost,” say George, who has had a love of music
throughout his life.
AT THE MINDS IN MOTION® PROGRAM YOU WILL:
• be physically active,
• meet and socialize with other people living with
dementia and their care partners,
• enjoy mentally stimulating activities to enhance your
brain health,
• receive emotional and educational support about
dementia and service and needed.
Presented in Partnership with:
• a two-hour weekly program that runs for eight weeks
• a certified fitness instructor leads physical activity
session (up to 50 minutes)
• Alzheimer Society staff and volunteers lead the
mental stimulation session (up to 50 minutes)
• Participants enjoy a healthful refreshment break while
socializing with other participants and care partners.
Not only do Lucy and George feel a genuine connection
with others during the sessions, but they are also
starting to get together with their new acquaintances
afterwards for coffee or lunch. “There are all sorts
of dimensions to Minds in Motion that we just didn’t
expect and we think it’s amazing,” says Lucy. “The
leaders are kind and make things enjoyable, and the
volunteers are fantastic. ”Best of all, George can do it
all, just like anybody else. He’s excited about signing
up for the next session.

Watercolour is a wonderful medium for older adults as it
requires the confidence to take risks and give up absolute
control... one never knows exactly what the painting
will look like until it is dry. That being said, this lesson
for beginners is virtually failsafe. Take advantage of the
opportunity to learn a new skill and you will go home with
a completed painting ready to frame.

Why there’s no better time than now to give back
In recent years, the tax rules regarding charitable giving have become increasingly flexible and
generous, and contain incentives to encourage Canadians to give to charity.
When given appropriate consideration, charitable giving can benefit both donor and recipient.
You get a vehicle through which you can help the causes you care about and society benefits as
a whole.
When considering making large gifts, contact the professionals at RBC Dominion Securities.
Investment Advisors Paul Winestock, Ryan Downey and Brendan Rogers can help ensure that
your philanthropic goals are in line with your investment strategy. They’ll work closely with
your tax and legal team to make sure that every angle – financial, estate and tax – is considered.
