For Understanding gather together for
their second regional training workshop
to empower volunteers to advance their
leadership and training skills.
This partnership was born in Hamburg
when YFU Uruguay and CISV Brazil met
during the Seminar on Intercultural and
Global Citizenship Education organized by
CISV, EEE-YFU, EFIL and Experiment in
International Living in June 2014.
At the seminar we had the amazing
opportunity to get to know organizations
that, through different approaches, work to
educate and inspire actions for a more just
and peaceful world. It was an incredible
chance to realize that, although differences
exist in all individuals and organizations,
we have lots of similarities and we can
complement each other, thus boosting the
impact of our actions.
Last year we shared some exciting and
productive days in the first Compass
Training in Brazil. It was so good that we
are now working on the second edition!
This is your chance to participate in a
weekend-long training to develop attitudes,
skills and knowledge necessary to deliver
educational activities, seminars and camps
back in your home organization. The
workshop will address all content necessary
to expand knowledge, exchange experiences
and develop active global citizens.

Why should you participate?
Why COMPASS?
“The Compass seminar is a very
enriching opportunity for all YFU
volunteer because it is an instance
that allows you to meet and get
to know your colleagues from the
region (Brazil, Argentina, Mexico,
etc ...).
The name was chosen due to its
different meanings in English and some
similar words in Spanish and Portuguese,
all of which represent a value we want to
achieve with our workshop.
It personally allowed me to
understand and learn how I can
work with my colleagues, like the
creation of dynamics and processes
to improve the guidelines are an
important tool for our organization.
Also I can confess that it helped me
gain confidence in myself for future
opportunities in YFU. I am very
proud of the work done.
It was 4 days of hard work but the
atmosphere was always very friendly
and very warm, which gave us a
very special bond not only with my
colleagues: we achieve a communion
with all participants of the seminar.
The support we receive from
CISV was very important because
we experienced a rich, dynamic
exchange and prospects, which not
only helped us to understand but
also to modify different views and
work styles.”

The Compass training will be hosted at
Casona del Río, located in Tigre, close
to the Buenos Aires city. The site is a
beautiful house on an island by the river
with plenty of outdoor spaces. It also offers
rooms for participants’ accommodation,
with bed sheets and towels.
* * We will be leaving the site after lunch on November 2nd, so
we suggest you book your departure flight for after 08:oo pm.

To register for the Compass Training
just click the following link and fill out the
online Compass Application Form.
The workshop participation fee is
US$ 200,00. The payment must be made
in cash on arrival.
Please remember to fill out the online
Participant Information Form on the this

When your registration is complete, you
are going to receive an e-mail confirmation.
Participation spots will be granted
according to registration date and last
minute applications will be accepted
according to availability. We recommend
you to sign up as soon as possible to ensure
your spot.
The deadline for registration is
September 7th, 2015.
Cancellation
Cancellation deadline is September
25th.
If you have registered and cancel your
participation after that date, your National
Organization will be charged for 100% of
your participation fee.
Registration and deadlines...
It is very important for the staff to have
all the information regarding your health so
we can take good care of you. If you have
any food restriction or suffer any allergies,
please let us know. We want to have enough
time to organize the menus and to have our
first aid kit well prepared.
Insurance
To participate in Compass it is
mandatory for you to hold an insurance
that is valid in Argentina.
It is important that you understand the
way it works in Argentina and find out the
list of hospitals it works in Buenos Aires
along with other information you may need.
The deadline is October 1st, 2015.
Passport and visa
Don’t forget to check you have a valid travel ID. If you are not a Mercosur citizen
remember you need a passport that is valid and won’t expire on the following 6 months after
the end of Compass. Furthermore, remember to check whether you need a visa or not as
some nationalities may require a tourist visa to enter Argentina. If you have doubts, please
contact the local Argentinean Consulate in your country. Remember these documents may
take quite a while, so please do check them as soon as possible!

If I want to fly...
Currency
Buenos Aires has two major airports: Aeropuerto Internacional de Ezeiza (EZE)
and Aeroparque Internacional (AEP).
The official exchange rate for Argentinian
pesos is USD 1,00 = ARS 9,16.
EZE is 37 km from the city center. You can take a shuttle from 5 AM to 10.30 PM
and costs ARS $110 to Retiro (Manuel Tienda León - Av. Madero and San Martín,
tel. 4315-5115). It takes approximately 40 minutes. Taxis cost ARS $220 - $446.
You can buy:
AEP is located 2 kms from the city center. ARBUS shuttle bus takes you from
Aeroparque to several locations including Retiro. Urban buses and taxis are available.

If I want to go by bus…
Retiro is the main bus terminal in Buenos Aires. A few meters away you
can find Retiro Train Station where you can easily take a train to the
meeting point. Take the Mitre-Tigre line; a train leaves every 15 minutes
and you get to Tigre in an hour.

If I want to go by water…
Several ferry boats travel from Uruguay (Montevideo, Colonia, Piriápolis, Punta del
Este) to Buenos Aires: Buquebus, Seacat and Colonia Express.
Once you get to the City you need to take a taxi or a local bus to get to Retiro train
station where you can board the train to the meeting point. Alternatively, Cacciola
Viajes will take you directly from Carmelo to the meeting point.
The meeting point is a block away from
Tigre’s Train Station.
People wearing CISV and YFU t-shirts will
be waiting for you. We will leave the meeting
point at 5 PM sharp (british time, no latino time).

Welcome to Argentina...
When you hear this name, what pops in
your mind?
The name Argentina comes from the
Latin term “argentum”, which means
silver. The origin of this name goes back
to the firsts voyages made by the Spanish
conquerors to the Río de la Plata. The
survivors of the shipwrecked expedition
mounted by Juan Díaz de Solís found
indigenous people in the region who gave
them silver objects as presents.
Located in South America, Argentina
has an area of almost 3.8 million square
kilometers with approximately 54% of
plains (grasslands and savannahs), 23%,
plateaus, and the other 23% of mountains and the remainder in the Antarctic.
Argentina’s current population is more
than 40 million inhabitants, almost half
of which live in the city and the province of
Buenos Aires.
Spanish is the official language of the
Argentine Republic.
There is complete religious freedom in
Argentina, although Roman Catholicism
prevails. Other religions practiced in the
country are Protestant, Jewish, Moslem,
Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox and
others.
The official Argentine currency is the
Peso. There are bills of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50,
and 100 pesos, and coins of 1 peso and 1, 5,
10, 25, and 50 cents.

inhabitants. It is also one of the
most elegant and active cities in South
America and the one that summarizes the
heterogeneous essence of Argentines the
best. With a modern, hip structure

visitors with the different personalities of its
neighborhoods. People are also known to
be warm and a wide range of shopping and
cultural proposals are offered. Buenos Aires

Training
The Compass is intended for any YFU
volunteer or paid staff with a mandate for
training and planning. It is based on the
CISV educational approach and training
methodologies and it was specifically
designed to complement YFU’s strengths
and cover its needs.
No matter who the target group of your
training or camp is, this course will provide
you with the tools needed to enhance your
planning, facilitation, and evaluation skills.
National Organizations are encouraged
to send their members with training and
planning responsibilities.

This training is a joint project between
CISV and YFU, thus both CISV and YFU
facilitators will deliver its content.
Training Content
Cultural Evenings
Compass is an intensive 4-day course
designed to enhance and complement
the practices we put into action in both
our organizations. It focuses on training
methodologies as well as ways to better
understand the CISV educational methods
and how to work with the YFU LOOP.
As any intercultural experience, having fun and sharing tastes, sounds and moves are also
part of the Compass. Socializing is a very important content in our schedule!
The course is a dynamic, hands-on
experience that includes a practicum in
which participants plan, facilitate, and
evaluate a session. Each participant who
completes the course will receive a Compass
Training Certificate.
Bring typical snacks, the latest hits and practice some traditional dances to introduce us
during our evenings! It is going to be memorable!
Training sessions
GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER Breaking the Ice for the best benefit of the training.
GOALS, INDICATORS AND EXPECTATIONS FOR THE COMPASS Explain what we are
doing in the Compass training, what to expect from the training and trainees.
COLLABORATION IN TRAINING TEAMS AND BEYOND Explore and practice the key
elements of collaboration. Emphasize the importance of adopting positive and inclusive
attitudes toward teamwork. Trainees will explore how to plan, deliver, and evaluate
training/Camp hosting with a team of two or more.
YFU GOALS AND INDICATORS Understanding of what they must reach by the end of an
YFU Camp and how the YFU methodologies can be used to reach those goals.
GIVING AND RECEIVING FEEDBACK Learn strategies for giving and receiving
constructive feedback. They will also learn how this process can help improve
performance by providing objective evidence through collaborative and
non-confrontational dialogue.
CISV EDUCATIONAL APPROACH Understanding of CISVs educational approach, using
the educational methodology of CISV.
DESIGNING A TRAINING SESSION / ACTIVITY PLANNING Understanding of the
process of designing a successful training session /activity planning.
CREATING A POSITIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT Understanding of the impact of
environment on the learning process. Identify factors that contribute to a safe learning
environment and how to implement them. Consider the importance of building and
maintaining trust, shared goals and expectations. Develop a learning environment that is
safe, engaging, stress free, and filled with positive energy.
APPROACHES TO DELIVER A CAMP Development of strong presentation and
facilitation skills. They will increase their knowledge of different delivery techniques and
have the opportunity to incorporate these into their camp.
PREPARATION AND FACILITATION OF ACTIVITIES Plan and deliver an activity using the
elements of the course. Work in teams to run a session using necessary handouts.
SELF AWARENESS AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT Understanding of training and
learning styles and their impact on the training process. Activities and exercises will
enable trainees to become familiar with their personal strengths and growth potential.
HOW TO PLAN AND ORGANIZE A CAMP AS A LEADER/STAFF Explore how to focus
on the content of an educational camp and the elements it must have.
GROUP DEVELOPMENT AND GROUP DYNAMICS Understanding of the group
development process and how it contributes to successful Camp. This element stresses the
importance of a flexible approach to training in order to adapt it to the needs of the group.
SELF-EVALUATION AND ACTION PLANNING Assess personal strengths and growth areas
related to training. Identify sources of support for their training development and create
wan action plan to support continuous improvement.
