and because I like to try new materials. The quality
and performance of the film is comparable with other
products in the same price range, and the V-flow air
release works well. The print quality is very clean and

We have used VION VP3000 and
Overlaminate to produce graphics for
exhibition stands. We chose the material
for its reduced shrink-back properties;
VP3000 virtually eliminates this problem.

HINTS AND TIPS: DIGITAL PRINT FILMS
Monomeric v’s Polymeric
Calendered films are categorised into two groups;
monomeric and polymeric, determined by the type of
plasticisers used during the manufacturing process.
Suitable for most internal and short-term external
applications, monomeric films are the least expensive.
These films shrink after shorter periods of time, so are not
appropriate for channels or recesses due to the strong
memory but are ideal for flat surface applications with a 3-5
year durability.
Added polymers in polymeric films reduce shrinkage making
the film suitable for flat and slightly curved surfaces. The
durability of polymeric films is 5 - 7 years.
V-Flow?
V-Flow is a bubble free adhesive containing a channelled
liner to create non-visible air channels to make application
even easier. Use firm squeegee strokes when applying the
film, working towards an edge to channel any trapped air to
an exit point.
Storing Digital Print Film
Vinyl needs to acclimatise, ideally for 3 hours at room
temperature (20-23˚C) before printing to allow optimum print
quality. Dry warm conditions are a must for vinyl storage.
Damp areas can create problems with paper liners, that can
absorb moisture and cause cockling and print head strikes
whilst printing.

HINTS AND TIPS: OVERLAMINATES
Why laminate?
Overlaminate films protect a print from abrasion, chemicals
and UV rays, all of which can shorten the lifespan of a
printed film. They also enhance the appearance but be sure
to select the correct overlaminate for your digital print film –
we have recommended which overlaminte to use with each
of the VION digital print films for your convenience.
Outgasing
Outgassing a digital print film is vital before applying a
laminate, this helps to avoid edge curling, delamination
and adhesive failure. The time needed to outgas will
vary depending on the print e.g. black ink or darker solid
colour print will have a greater ink density on the film,
which will require a longer outgassing time.
You may find that it can take up to 72 hours to fully
outgas dense colour prints. Some dark blues and black
colours can reach 400% ink coverage, compared to a
light grey which could be as low as 60%.
More ink = more solvent!

We use VION VP3000 and VP5000 with their
overlaminates for commercial hoarding panels
and site signage. It’s a very good white vinyl the whitest I have ever seen, which makes the
print really stand out with good strong colours.
It looks very good. The gloss laminate has a
really great sheen, and we can print on it as
well. It’s a good quality vinyl at a good price.

Window Preparation
Warming cold window glass up in winter can
be tricky - try loosely taping bubble wrap to the
outside of the window to help with this problem.
Another handy tip picked up recently for intricate
etch graphics is to first plot the artwork onto paper
creating an outline of the graphic which you can
then lie the vinyl over.
Graphic Preparation
Window Film Application
Sometimes after applying the application tape to an
etch film it’s difficult to see the graphic - a simple
solution to overcome this is to take a crayon and
make a rubbing on the application tape; which will
show the edge of the graphic.
Our top tip for speeding up application times when
using VION Crystal is to apply the film using VION
Right On Application Fluid (see page 18) rather than
water as it dries much faster.

large self-adhesive letters, logos and graphics.
With low tensile elongation and high wet strength, the
tapes are designed to lay flat and adhere to the liner
so that they do not wrinkle or curl. Available in VTP50

paper tapes.
