The Female Touch: Last month the newly formed women’s Touch Rugby team, the Maputo Camarões (Prawns) travelled
to Durban to take part in their first tournament, generously sponsored by HanBro (suppliers of Landrover parts in Maputo)
and mozbus (coming soon to Maputo- a new ‘bus’ service- linked to MozaicTravel).
The women, who all started playing mixed Touch on Friday afternoons at the American School, decided to take their skills
to a new level when they discovered that Touch was popular in some of Mozambique’s neighbouring countries, especially
South Africa.
Their coach, Chris Bjornestad, led the women on a rigorous 2-month training schedule with help from other experienced
players Vincent van der Merwe and Brett Norman. Developing their tactical moves and improving fitness levels were key
focus points; Touch may not involve the tackles and physical strength of contact rugby, but it requires just as much stamina
and strategic thinking (and sometimes the ability to resist the temptation to tackle!).
In Durban, the women built on these skills by participating in a coaching clinic before playing a series of matches with the
KwaZulu-Natal Ladies First team, Under 19As, U19Bs and U16s. Each of the games tested the Camarões to the max and,
although the Durban teams had far more experience, the Maputo side managed to hold off some tries by focusing on defence
and working as a team. Unfortunately, Mozambican team member, Nikita Come (their valuable number 9 who’s as tough as
today’s contact rugby scrumhalves), was not able to make the trip due to unforeseen circumstances - her resilience and quick
feet on the field were missed!
Now that the Camarões have tested the ‘Shark’ waters of the Touch environment in Durban, they are plotting sweet revenge
at other tournaments in the region, and are intending to host teams in Maputo’s ‘Prawn’ territory! So, if you enjoy a sense of
competition, have enthusiasm and a basic level of fitness, then come along to the American School on Friday afternoons at
16.15 for the mixed Touch game and we’ll take it from there.
