For many girls, finding the perfect prom dress to call
their own is a top priority.
“It took two days and an evening to find my dress,”
senior Nicole Gaspar said. “I found the shop through a
police officer.”
Besides going through the usual aesthetic rituals of
prom, students gather together in a vivid fiesta celebrating the students as they near their full completion of
high school. They also look forward to spending time
with loved ones in an atmosphere designed for social
interaction and merriment.
“It is the first time I’m going to prom with a date of
the male kind,” senior Alexo White said. “Usually I try
to get all my friends out for a mocktail party, but this
year I have a boyfriend, so we are going to have a quiet
dinner at a Brazilian steak house, go to prom, and hang
out at a beach house for the rest of the weekend.”
With all these elements and more mixed together,
prom shall create fresh, vivid, and wonderful memories for students and teachers alike, to carry with them
throughout their school days and beyond.

Don’t sweat the small stuff

There’s a certain irony in writing my
first column on the last newspaper before
graduation. MY graduation, in fact. So
there’s a certain amount of pressure that
I’m putting on myself. Should I be serious, and try to leave MHS with wisdom,
or write about something meaningless
and make it funny? After much debate,
I settled on what I usually do: dive in
without a plan, pull it all out of you know
where, and hope it ends well.
And when I say that’s what I usually
do, I’m serious. Take this weekend, for
instance. I had to get up on the roof to get
a towel (don’t ask), and I said to myself,
‘Hey, instead of getting a ladder, I think
I’ll just leap from the pool deck!’
Now, most people would stop right
there, take a good hard look at their Inner
Self, and say, ‘Hey, Inner Self, I think
you’ve been playing too much Assassins
Creed. That’s not a good idea!’ Unfortunately, I’m not most people. It’s ok
though, because my neck broke my fall.
Or was it ‘my fall broke my neck?’ Either
way, it worked out in the end, because
I didn’t have to do any yardwork. All is
well that ends well. Except for my neck.
And the yard.
I’ll be the first to tell you that more
often than not, people aren’t very happy
with my philosophy. They tend to throw
around baseless accusations, like ‘lazy’.
When my counter-point of ‘whatever
you want is stupid anyway so why bother
doing it’ doesn’t work, I have to end up
explaining it, which makes me sad. Why?
Because I shouldn’t have to.
It all began when I realized that forcing
yourself to do something that you don’t
want is possibly the most idiotic thing a
person can do (besides saying that Lady
Gaga is a man). At the beginning of the
year, I resolved to do ALL of my work,
on time, and in the right place. And for a
while, it was good. It was all looking up!
Good grades, a decent college! My reaction? Whoopty-doo.
Seniors, it’s not too late. Don’t get
edged into leading a life you don’t want
or into doing something you don’t want
to do. You have ONE life. Every single
second counts, and it doesn’t matter what
your parents, your friends, your girl/
boyfriend, or your teachers say. You need
to be doing what makes you happy. If
that’s the satisfaction of digging a ditch
and knowing that it’s going to be used for
decades, go for it. If it’s the pleasure of
working for 10 years for a medical degree
for the incredibly large paycheck, do it.
If you just want to chill out and enjoy life
for a bit, go for it.
Don’t spend your time doing something
‘worthwhile.’ Make sure you spend it doing something worthwhile for yourself.

Tie-game causes tension among seniors

Juniors Tiffany Vu, Cory Ryncarz and Angel Mathew have successfully completed an online course for NASA’s High School Aerospace
Scholars program. After completion of the course, which ranged
throughout the year with required reading, quizzes, essays, and
graphic representations, each student was invited to attend a weeklong summer workshop experience at the Johnson Space Center. At
the workshop, the students, who were eligible by maintaining a 90
percent average in the course, will be split into teams and work with
NASA engineers at creating hypothetical designs for a human trip to
Mars and the creation of a colony there. NASA looks for new juniors
to participate annually, and those who attend the workshop are even
eliglible to recieve an elective credit.
The first team that went to state
The Manvel FFA floriculture team of Daira Chavira, Samantha Kauk,
Sabrina Arnold, Amanda Wilson and Casondra Davis stand with their
third place trophies they won at the Houston competition. The team
went to state on April 23 this year and was the first team to go to state
since the school opened. “It was so much fun,” Chavira said, “I loved
it more than anything, even though it was completely nerve-racking,
but it was totally worth it.”

game was a successful event
this year at MHS, and ended
with a tie game 12 to 12. The
bleachers were practically full
of students and parents. The
seniors and the juniors were
competing to see which class
would dominate, supported by
their ‘new’ cheerleaders.
“It was exciting, pretty
feminine, but it was fun,” senior Jose Plaza said. “I would
do it again in a heartbeat.”
The cheerleaders were
boys dressed in short shorts,
brightly colored wigs, and
bras filled with various
objects. They gave their all
during the game with cheers
that cheerleader sponsor Jenna
Duff taught them. Their halftime performance was to the
song “Baby Got Back” by Sir
Mixalot.
“It was challenging, but well
worth the time and effort,”
cheerleader sponsor
Duff said. “The guys really
got into the game and we
laughed at them and with
them. It was great.”
The seniors were just about
to win when the juniors tied at
the last minute with a pass to
Bria Adams, sending the game
into overtime. In an amazing
turn, both teams scored during
overtime, leaving the game at
a draw.
“I was pretty upset- it was a
close game, but overall I was
proud of how we did,” senior
Martha Arenas said.
Senior colors were pink and
black while the juniors were
green and black. Captains of both teams were
former Varsity Football players. Though both teams left
the field with the same score,
it was still a successful event.
“The game was funny, but it
angered me,” junior William
Yates said. “We should have
won.”
Both juniors and seniors
were upset about the tie
because they wanted to prove
each other wrong. Trash talking was going on all through
the week leaving anticipation
for the game Thursday night.
Animosity was in the air, and
before long students who were
friends began taking sides and
representing their graduating
class. Before the game both
teams were feed pizza and
drinks to get pumped, and
knew it was the opportunity
to prove once and for all who
was better.
In the end it was all for the
fun of it, and for a good cause
in efforts to raise money for
senior class activites.

Valedictorian Ramon Bagadion and
Salutatorian Martin Pospisil are Manvel
High’s second set of scholars on their
way to a successful life.
To the world, they may or may not be
the next people to discover a cure for
cancer or an all-purpose pain reliever,
but to Manvel High they will always be
future aspirations for freshmen to work
up to.
“We always wanted to steal the cop’s
golf cart and jet to Taco Bell,” Pospisil
said.
As the old saying goes: nobody’s
perfect, and the class of 2010’s valedictorian and salutatorian are no exception.
Bagadion said,
“I once got suspended in eigth grade
for unintentionally threatening a teacher,”
he said.
Both students admits to occasional low
grades. Neither students were the least
bit embarrassed by stating that fifteens
and zeroes weren’t uncommon on their
homework grades or tests for that matter. But then again, AP classes are a lot
of work, apparently even for scholarly
students.
“Don’t take your life too seriously,”
Pospisil said, “because nobody gets out
alive.”
The 2010 valedictorian studies thirty
minutes to two hours every day with
about thirty minutes before every significant test, and Pospisil studies almost
three hours an evening. But studying
alone was not the only proven technique
that worked.
Bagadion sympathized with procrastinators and strugglers, acknowledging
that many conventional methods of doing
well in class did not work for everyone.
“Find out what works for you and do
it,” he said,”pay attention, stay awake,
especially if it’s important, and it’s
always good to review over the lesson the
night before any test.”
To raise their GPA, students would
often enroll in as many AP classes as possible. AP classes, while requiring a significantly higher amount of study time,
often pay off not only with bonus points
for their weighted GPA, but with college
credit for that specified course.
“All I gave up was three hours of
sleep,” Bagadion said, “I used to sleep
for seven hours, but with studying and
homework, it came down to four.”
A big reason that some students who
wanted to advance, but loathed advanced
classes, chose not to was the often scary
curriculum.
“Just do it,” Pospisil said. “It helps.”
They are recognized for their grades,
but they do not wish for their academic
achievements nor their future success to
define them. “I want to be remembered
as a person,” Pospisil said, “not number
two.”
For future references, Ramon Bagadion, 2010’s valedictorian, will hopefully
be attending the University of Texas at
Austin to study how to make the world a
better place.
“It’s not about the money,” Bagadion
said, “it’s about the people I touch.”

grades, applications, and
funds together in anticipation for their “college sendoff.”
There are students at
Manvel High school that are
still unsure of their college
choice, what they want to
study, and ultimately where
they envision themselves
job-wise. To alleviate some
of that frustration, anxiety,
and uncertainty, Manvel has
its own college counselor,
Arlene Hernandez.
“Seniors worry about
their grades, their SAT and
ACT scores, and money,”
Arlene Hernandez said.
“They worry a lot about
financial aid and grants.”
In addition to Hernandez’s expertise, kids can
release frustration through
intensive therapy or standing on their heads for
extended periods of time;
three have survived the latter method.
Besides the obvious
benefits of preparing for
college, there are also some
additional benefits that can
be derived from preparing
sooner rather than later.
“Some of the benefits of
preparing for college and
getting your papers out
soon is earlier awareness
of acceptance, possibly to
the college of your choice;
you generally have a better
chance of getting into a
school if you are proactive
about it, due to the extreme
degree of competition you
will face,” Hernandez said
“You will also have the opportunity to start socializing
with current students of the
university, and of course
the biggest sale is increased
scholarship availability.”
Hernandez works to help
students overcome anything
that could be preventing
them from entering the college of their choice.
“I assist students with
college admission applications, I provide financial aid
information, and expedite
the application process,”
Hernandez said.
As much assistance as
Hernandez can provide,
there are just some non-academic things that students
may want to prepare for. For
instance, community showers that are used by people
with questionable hygiene.
A way to prepare for this?
Wear shower shoes before
you find something growing
on your feet.
For those paranoid about
their possessions, a good
investment might be a minisafe to hold valuables and
other things held close to
the heart. To make a ‘home
away from home’ feel more
like where they grew up,
seniors could try bringing
a few reminders of the life
they left behind, like posters
and family pictures; for
those who don’t have an
attractive family, scratch the
picture part.
Everyone’s college experience differs and everyone
runs the chance of having
the slacker roommate, so a
lamp for private studying,
and a stress-relieving baseball bat at parties for some,
can be of great use. There is
a very popular way in which
people are known for ruining their financial standing,
and that is overusing their
credit cards during college.
Ways to avoid such personal
financial disaster is to either
not get a credit card, or to
use them only when absolutely needed. Otherwise,
play it completely safe and
use cash or debit.
By following the suggestions outlined in this guide,
and preferably Hernandez’s
method, seniors should
hopefully be able to get
into a decent college with
a minimal amount of stress
and anxiety... unless they
are natural born nail-biters.

earn money and it has become a tradition at Manvel
High School; the Mr. Maverick competition is one such
venue utilized to collect this money. Cameron Schlegel,
along with the help of his escort Ellen Smith, won the
Mr. Maverick competition on April 17. Schlegel and
Smith didn’t only win the Mr. Maverick, but they also
were the pair that collected the most money. The runner
for the competition was Reggie Rivera and his escort
Ylan Ho.
“It was fun getting together and competing,” senior escort Ellen Smith said.
