As the famous “el Niño storm (the child)
hit the beautiful beaches of Playas de
Rosarito, Baja California, his presence left
his impact on the coastal resort city in
February.

Playas de Rosarito confused for Rosarito
or Rosarito Beach, most likely due to the
well-known Rosarito Beach Hotel, is
about 25 miles south of San Diego
California. With a population of about
65,000 as of 2010. Rosarito is a very nice
and cozy place to spend the mornings
jogging or walking it's serene beaches.
The storm mostly caused flooded areas on
the roads where the drainage got clogged
because of either trash or debris in the
lower parts of the city. The beach area
was impacted the most causing closed
sections throughout the storm. Varied
resort beach huts were also damaged or
torn down and even washed out to sea.
While out on a morning run on a lucky
day that the beach was open, I was very
amazed to see what kind of debris was
washed up to shore. I was expecting the
usual rocks and sea weeds but, to my
surprise I saw common house hold stuff
even tires! I kept running staring at
everything my eyes could see. There was
so much stuff and as I got farther down
the coast I saw something big and green. I
couldn’t make what it was at first but,
then I realized there were two big
dumpsters on the beach.

This was a very weird sight for me. The
next thing I saw was a big front end loader
drive by. I completely came to a halt. This
was a Rosarito in my worst nightmare. I
would have never ever thought to see
such a mess. El Niño was definitely here
and the little child had more than a
tantrum. By this time, I was just soaking in
an unbelievable scenario. It looked like a
crime scene out of a movie. Thankfully for
us residents the cleanup crew that was
out there did a fantastic and quick job to
clean up the mess on the beach. I went

out there about 3 days later and it was
like I had been dreaming and oddly
everything was back to normal.

Atropellaron al perro. Ahora ¿qué voy
a hacer? Me dijeron que lo cuidara, se
me salió y un carro pasó encima de él.
No pude decirle a mi hermana lo
sucedido, así que obtuve otro perro
igualito. Anduve de perrera en perrera
buscando un perro con las
características similares. El perro era
tipo terrier blanco similar al Bengie e
igual de mugroso. Cuando por fin
encontré algo que se le pareciera,
traté de entrenarlo para que fuera
igual de desobediente, cochino, bravo
y alegre que el difunto perro
atropellado. Por dos días lo estuve
amaestrando y lo dejé meterse al lodo
para que la mugre lo disfrazara aún
más. El fin de semana mi hermana,
que vive en San Diego, me habló para
preguntarme sobre el perro, y le dije
que estaba estupendamente bien, a lo
que contestó –Hoy por la tarde iré a la
casa, tengo muchas ganas de verlo‐.
Empecé a sudar frío y sonreí a través
del auricular mientras le respondía a
mi hermana que mejor viniera
después de las seis de la tarde ya que
me llevaría al perro a dar la vuelta a la
playa. Obviamente era una mentira,
pero esperaba que la oscuridad de la
noche ayudara a camuflajear las
tenues diferencias entre el perro
muerto y el sustituto. Durante todo el
día me dediqué a enseñarle fotos de
mi hermana, le di ropa sucia de ella a
oler y después lo premiaba con una
salchicha o un pedazo de jamón.
Repetí esta operación al menos veinte
veces durante el transcurso del día, al
final de riguroso entrenamiento el

“Pavlov” empezaba a babear.
Finalmente llegó la hora marcada y se
escuchó la cochera abriéndose. Mi
hermana había arribado. La intercepté
en el patio, donde la oscuridad era

beso e inmediatamente me preguntó
por su perro, le respondí que estaba
dentro de la casa, aunque
intencionalmente había dejado la
puerta abierta para que este saliera
por si solo al patio oscuro, y así como
lo planeé sucedió, el perro salió,
reconoció el olor de mi hermana y
supongo que también su rostro ya
que le empezó a hacer una fiesta y
brincarle de emoción esperando su
premio. Mi hermana contrario a lo que
suponía se emocionó de ver a “su
perro” y empezó a acariciarlo y me
comentó –que lindo esta Toby, el día
de hoy me parece hasta más
hermoso! La conexión entre mi
hermana y “su perro” fue creciendo
tanto hasta el punto que lo cargó y
este le lamió su rostro dejándolo todo
babeado, mi hermana reía de alegría y

el perro en frenesí se le zafó de los
brazos y corrió hacia la calle, en eso
un carro se escuchó que un venía a
toda velocidad y lo único que vimos
fue el cuerpo del pobre “Toby” volar
por los aires como muñeco de trapo.
Mi hermana empezó a gritar de
incredulidad ante lo que acababa de
presenciar y fue simplemente a
encontrar el cuerpo del pobre perrito
con la lengua de fuera acostado sobre
un charco de sangre que emanaba de
su cabeza. Le ayude a recogerlo para
después enterrarlo y entre lágrimas y
abrazos mi hermana me dijo ‐Carlos,
¿qué vamos a hacer? Mi madre se
enojará mucho conmigo cuando
venga a visitarnos, ¿qué te parece si
después de enterrar a Toby vamos a
la perrera a conseguir uno similar?
