Brochure Guide
Theatre manager’s Foreword
The brochure is divided into two parts, from this side you can read the
Theatre Programme, if you turn the brochure around and upside down you
can look up the Visual Arts and Outreach & Education Programme.
Welcome to the very first season of performances in
The George Bernard Shaw Theatre.
It’s been a joy to get to know the local artists,
performing arts groups and enthusiasts over the past
few months and see their quality and dedication.
Between the Theatre and Visual Arts & Outreach section we are delighted
to present forewords from Cllr. Michael Doran, Cathaoirleach, Carlow County
Council, Cllr. Des Hurley, Cathaoirleach Carlow Town Council, and from Tom
Barry, County Manager.
The performances in the opening season reflect the
wide range of local cultural interests and offerings as
well as introducing some new work of national and
international repute that can now be presented in the
world-class facility of The George Bernard Shaw Theatre.
On these pages you can also see our quick find calendar of events,
information about our friends scheme, booking tickets, restaurant, how to
join our mailing list and our Opening Celebrations at the end of September.

Róisín McGarr, Theatre Manager
I’m especially pleased to welcome Barabbas Theatre
Company to our new stage with Johnny Patterson,
The Singing Irish Clown written by Little John Nee as
our inaugural theatre show. It’s truly a privilege to
host a Theatre Company and Director of such repute
to launch our opening season. Little John’s lyrical and
spell-binding playwriting and performing is in a class
of its own and the show is made all the more special
by the fact that it also stars Bryan Burroughs, a superb
Carlow-born performer of national and international
standing. The show promises to be a wonderful new
theatre production and a landmark moment for The
George Bernard Shaw Theatre and for Carlow – so be
sure not to miss it.
The programme maintains these high standards right
through until the end of the year across all of the
performing arts – music, drama, comedy, dance, opera –
and of course pantomime!
With something in the programme for everyone, I hope
that you’ll enjoy what’s on offer in your new performing
arts space and make it part of your everyday life - we
look forward to hearing your feedback.

“When I walk on I must be just right, happiness
depends on it, lives are destroyed by the
accumulation of small disappointments gathering
momentum. They want Johnny Patterson to transport
them away from their troubles… I must be just right.”
The George Bernard Shaw Theatre is privileged to present
the world premiere of “Johnny Patterson, The Singing
Irish Clown” from the internationally acclaimed Barabbas
Theatre Company as our inaugural production.
This powerful new show is an homage to the forgotten
genius and extraordinary life of circus performer Johnny
Patterson from Co. Clare, known as “The Singing Irish
Clown.”
Starting life as a humble drummer-boy, Johnny Patterson’s
unique talents saw him head-hunted from a regional
touring circus by the world famous Cooper and Bailey
Circus. He “said goodbye to his beloved wife and family and
headed for Amerikay.” At first he joined the ranks of “the
detested Irish” immigrants abroad but went on to become
one of the highest paid entertainers of his time and
amassed huge wealth through royalties from his hit songs.

With Little John Nee’s characteristically easy mix of
humour, poignancy and lyricism, this beautiful new show
throws light on the captivating magic and the harsh reality
of a life devoted to performance and entertainment.
“There’s plenty of money for singing and fooling,
Rambling in good company from town to town.”
At the end of a life marked by great triumphs and great
tragedies in equal measure, Johnny returned to Parnell’s
Ireland to fulfill his dream of forming his own circus.
Moved by the politics of his homeland, the idealistic
Johnny penned a song urging Loyalists and Nationalists
to put their differences aside. He paid for his political
commentary with his life, as an angry and bitter reaction
from the crowd turned to violence and retaliation.
“I am a singing clown for what its worth, a life
invested, and now in the graveyard, the fire of my
tribe has set me aflame. Always a fool, always a fool,
but a fool with worthy aspirations.”

Now in it’s fifth year, the Carlow
African Film Festival is the first
festival of it’s kind in Ireland.
This year, The George Bernard Shaw Theatre is
delighted to be the host venue for CAFF’s festival.
The Festival provides a platform to celebrate and
explore the intellectual and aesthetic diversity
of African culture. It also aims to celebrate
excellence in African filmmaking by showcasing
and honouring best film works as well as
facilitating artistic links between African and Irish
communities and artists.
In the last five years, CAFF has played host to many
special guests such as Presley Chweneyagae, lead
actor in Tsotsi, the 2006 Oscar Award-winning
film from South Africa and Bonnie Henna, who
starred in Catch a Fire, alongside Tim Robins.
Amongst the star guests this year is Rudolph
Walker OBE. Rudolph is a British character
actor, popular for his role as Patrick Trueman
in the British Soap, EastEnders which he has
played since 2001. One of the first black actors
to be seen regularly on British television,
Rudolph is proud of his major role in the
controversial Love Thy Neighbour in the
1970s. He also took on later comedic roles in
The Thin Blue Line and in Ali G in da House
and appeared in the first episode of Mr. Bean
as “The Examiner”. Rudolph was appointed
OBE by the Queen in 2006 and is ranked
amongst the 100 Greatest Black Britons.

Selfless love and magical corruption. This is a rare treat for
Carlow audiences to see a stunning opera production of
international standard on their doorstep. Set in a timeless
world of passion and plots – where reality blurs with
fantasy – the enigmatic Alcina reigns. Deceit, sensuality
and seduction pervade Handel’s glorious music with
exquisite arias (sung in English by an extraordinary cast)
that lament love unrequited and faith betrayed.

Atmospheric and evocative, the opening shot is a snowy Dublin
street-scene at night, with horse-drawn cabs trundling along the
cobbled roads. Piano music spills from the grand Georgian house,
the upstairs windows are shadowed by waltzing couples and we’re
irresistibly drawn inside.
Huston holds his directorial nerve throughout and follows (with
eagle-eyed attention to detail) the Joycean inconsequential chatter
and to-ings and fro-ings of the dinner-jacketed Dublin elite at their
soiree to celebrate the Feast of The Epiphany on January 6th 1904.
Considered by many to be Huston’s masterpiece, The Dead serves

This month’s Shaw Session will host very special guests
The Hot Club of Dublin. This gypsy jazz band consists
of three members of the Gilligan Family; John, Fintan
and Daniel, along with Russian gypsy violin player Oleg
Ponomarev. United by their passion for Hotclub and old
swing, this vibrant band have developed and expanded on
the Hotclub style to include four part vocal harmonies with
hints of eastern gypsy flavour. With an exciting blend of
instruments not normally associated with Hotclub (such
as clarinet, piano and saxophone) this band’s profile is
growing nationally.
Be sure to check them out early before they take off! The
session also hosts one of Carlow’s top musical talents, Eric
Butler and promises to be a night to remember.

Star of RTÉ’s The Panel and BBC’s The BBC’s Blame

Bookmarks at the George Bernard Shaw Theatre on the
10th December 2009. Trinity College may have Oscar
Wilde, but Dublin City University has Neil Delamere.
Seeing your photograph on your university bookmark
is food for thought; you could almost say it’s was a
sign. Maybe life itself is just a series of bookmarks – the
events that highlight how far we’ve come and how far
we’ve left to go.
Neil considers these strange markers as well as
pondering why his photo appeared on a DCU bookmark
in the first place.

Musical Director Ollie Hennessy

For four years, the Carlow Club Players
have entertained audiences in Carlow
with their annual panto productions
in the Éire Óg Clubhouse. This year,
the Club Players are proud to transfer
to The George Bernard Shaw Theatre
with their latest production - the
pantomime favourite of Cinderella.
All the ingredients are there: jealousy,
persecution and deceit – surely the
recipe for an hilarious spectacular and
entertaining extravaganza!
The Fairy godmother (the good) the
stepmother (the bad) and the Sisters
(the ugly) make their appearances
and blend in with the Club Players
own mix of good, bad and ugly (and
that’s just the councilors!). With a
little measure of all things current
and a good stirrer, the cake with icing
is complete.
Shelve all financial worries, shelve
all feelings of doom and gloom - go
on treat the family to a night of live
entertainment. Go on, you’re worth it.

unmissable show!
What a way to spend Christmas; in the exalted
company of the great Jack L and his band!
Having performed to great acclaim over the
summer months from New York to Paris, Jack
is returning to Ireland to perform in The GB
Shaw Theatre this Christmas.
One of the main highlights of the tour was his
performance with The Brooklyn Philharmonic
Orchestra, at the South Street Seaport Festival
in Brooklyn, New York, where he got a truly
rousing reception from 10,000 people!
Jack is definitely genre defying and to simply
try to define him as crooner or storytelling
troubadour is futile. His voice and stage
presence are his main selling points.
Jack’s voice is three-dimensional in that he can
go from a seducing whisper to an operatic top
note effortlessly. He has long ago confirmed
his status as Ireland’s foremost live performer.
His recent Burn On Tour sold out right around
Ireland and The George Bernard Shaw Theatre
will be no exception!
