THE
SCORE
AUGUST 2010
Anne Arundel Fish & Game Conservation Association
“The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against
tyranny in government.”
- Thomas Jefferson
From the President
G
reetings, my friends. Jen
and I hope that you are
enjoying your summer. But for
that brief little respite of a couple
of 70-degree days in mid-July,
it has been sweltering. In fact,
on one Sunday morning, I got
to the plinking range with my
.22…and well, it was just too
hot to shoot. I never thought
that I would see that day. We
are not as young as we used to
be. Be careful out there! Pace
yourselves and hydrate. The
Mill Creek Wranglers had their
annual Hawaiian Cowboy shoot.
It was quite a spectacle; that’s for
sure. Having been to the Parker
Ranch on the big island several
times and observed real paniolos
at work, I can report that there
was no resemblance. It looked
as though everyone was having a
grand time, though. I know it’ll
be a long time before I forget
that coconut bras just aren’t for
women anymore…
This issue of The SCORE is
the first electronic-only issue.
It will be available only on the
Web site and will be mailed to
a few members who have not
quite embraced the computer and
e-mail age. If you are in need or
know of another member in need
of a paper copy, please contact

And yet another benefit of AAF&G membership…
A
AF&G is entertaining the idea of offering a UTAH-certified Concealed
Carry Permit class at the club later this year. The instructor offering
the class, Mid-Atlantic Firearms Training (www.midatlanticfirearmstraining.
com), is certified by the Beehive State Dept of Public Safety and the course
fee of about $125 covers the instruction’s time, fingerprints and passport size
photographs to be submitted with the completed application, DL copy, and
mailing of the completed package. The course fee does not cover the Utahrequired application fee of $65.25 which needs to accompany the application.
The course fee is approximate and may be lower depending on the number
of course participants. Based on our hunter safety class experience, the club
facilities can accommodate about 40 students comfortably. We would like to
offer this class first to AAF&G members and spouses before the instructor
publicizes it to the public.
The Utah CCW, while not honored in MD (go figure), is honored in the
Beehive State and by many others (28 currently) across the country including
all those surrounding Maryland.
So that we may try to gauge the degree of member interest in taking a course
such as this and advise the instructor accordingly, please email Bill Palk at
[email protected] and advise him of your interest. Your expression of interest
is not a commitment to attend; it’s just a statement of probable interest.
Shooter Qualification Card Program
T
he Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) offers a Shooter
Qualification Program which AAF&G, in conjunction with the hunter
safety program, has made available for the past 4 years to members and nonmembers at the club rifle range. Those hunters who meet certain shooting
qualification standards (below) will become certified and receive a Maryland
State Shooter Qualification Card valid for the current year. This card serves as
“proof of proficiency” and enables a qualified hunter to be eligible to apply for
many of the managed deer hunts held across Maryland.
This year the DNR sanctioned Shooter Qualification events will be held
at AAF&G on Friday, September 17, 2010 from 1000 to1500 and on Friday,
October 1, 2010, also from 1000 to 1500.
To become certified, shooters must meet the following qualifications:
Shotgun: 3 out of 5 shots in a 9-inch circle at 40 yards Muzzleloader: 2 out of 3 shots in a 9-inch circle at 40 yards Bow: 3 out of 5 in vitals of a 3D deer and unmarked distances under 30 yds.
(Bow qualifications will be conducted on noted firearms qualification days
but on the AAF&G Archery Range.)

Coming
Friends of NRA Dinner
M
ark your calendars and plan to attend the Saturday,
August 21st Friends of NRA Dinner and Auction
right here in Annapolis.
The Club is a major supporter of this event which raises
money to be used for programs and equipment benefiting
Maryland youth and women. Our Junior Rifle program
has been a grant recipient for at least five years running
and the Navy JROTC at Annapolis High School as well.
There’s a flyer in this issue (see Page 4) which lists a
variety of options for dinner tickets, sponsorship packages
(both tax deductible or with other benefits) and raffle
tickets. You can even buy your dinner tickets online. Just
follow the directions on the flyer.
If you can’t come, but would like to provide some
support, please call Meg Clarke at 443-904-5023. If you
have any questions or just want more information give
Meg a call.
The event is a lot of fun with the inestimable Bobby
Campbell as the auctioneer. You can also watch the antics
of Dave Cloutier and Meg Clarke as they usually wind up
bidding against each other for at least one auction item or
game prize.
Since this issue of The SCORE is online you can copy
the flyer and bring a friend or 2. If you’ve come to the
dinner in the past, you know how important the program
is to passing the torch to younger generations. If you
haven’t come in the past, make this the year you do a little
extra for those who should be following us.
I look forward to seeing you on the 21st.
Meg Clarke
Building & Grounds Committee
A
s most of you know from last month’s SCORE, (You did read it didn’t you?), we had a great turnout of 57
club members and got a lot of spring cleaning done around the clubhouse and on several of the ranges. The
clubhouse in particular, now has a nice assortment of plants and flowers around the front of it and to that end I
would like to ask that when you are over at the club and have a few minutes, please water them. I have left a hose
spread out along the driveway so all you have to do is go around back of the clubhouse and turn on the water.
This will be a big help in keeping our plants alive, particularly with all this HOT weather we are having! I have
been doing this every time I am over there but some extra members doing the same can’t hurt!
Also, I could use some help on a fairly regular basis in trimming and weed wacking the grounds around the
clubhouse and all of the various trees etc. The club has a good quality Stihl weed wacker and it is kept in the
garage along with premixed gas and trimmer string. The grass cutting is pretty much under control due to help
from Charlie Harrison and Jason Chambers, but we always seem to be playing catch up with the trimming!
Thanks in advance to any and all who can help out in this regard.

As you can see, there was a very close race for the high scorer at this match. And that demonstrates why they put an
“X ring” on targets. Ray A. barely edged out younger brother Steve A. by two Xs for the high scorer distinction. Ah
well, sic transit gloria mundi. Better luck next month when we shoot anything that is as-issued, pre-64 issue.
The July AR15 Service Rifle match held on Saturday, July 3rd had five shooters, only four of whom were shooting
rifles that were eligible for competition. The non-competing rifle was a semi-auto chambered for .223 but not of the
AR15 pattern.

High scorer for this match was Roy H. with a stellar 98/2X; Roy’s high score might have been higher if he hadn’t
decided to perfect his offhand form in relays #4 and #5.
Next month (August): AR15 owners take note: You can now shoot any type of sight in the AR15 Service Rifle
matches, so don’t let not having iron sights dissuade you from coming out. While I can’t say there’s any advantage
gained with optics in the offhand position, they can be used advantageously in the prone position. Also, two 20-rd mags
are needed for the magazine change in the rapid fire phase. Next month’s Vintage Rifle match will be for any military
bolt-action rifle. Hope to see you all there.

Muzzleloader match: On Saturday, 25 September, beginning at 10:00am, there will be a muzzleloader match on
the Eccles range. Any long arm that loads from the muzzle , will be eligible to compete, be it new or old, inline or
traditional, replica or original, rifled or smoothbore, with primer, percussion, or flint ignition, with iron sights or
with a scope. This is also National Hunting and Fishing Day and what better time to get your muzzleloader tuned
up and ready for the early ML deer season competition of Man vs Deer on Oct 21st, 22nd, and 23rd. Targets will be
at 75 - 100 yards and the rest of the course of fire (number of shots, type of target, competition categories) will be
determined closer to the date of the match. Match entry fee of $5 for members, $10 for non-members.
Shoot safely and please observe all of the range rules,

President, from Page 1.
here’s a really novel approach – come to a meeting. This
measure will allow us to re-program approximately $6000
annually for our shooting programs. Not to mention, if
you are like me and get a lot of mail, every little bit helps.
I have burned up three really good confetti shredders in
the past year. Not to mention countless hours feeding
papers into the machines. Nothing with any personallyidentifying information goes in my garbage. You can’t
be too careful in this day of identity theft. The shear glut
of papers and shredding has caused me to outsource and
contract with a secure document destruction company.
They gave me this large can on wheels, and when it is full,
they come to the house with this giant shredder, and I
personally observe my documents being shredded. Once
I worked out the costs of the shredders and my lost time,
this was a no brainer. Not to mention the associated peace
of mind.
As many of you are aware, the Association filed a
lawsuit against a disgruntled former member. The lawsuit
recently ended with a settlement in our Association’s
favor. We won, and I couldn’t be more pleased with
the result. The settlement agreement and consent
injunction are posted in the clubhouse. So, with that bit of
unpleasantness behind us, I’d like to thank all of you for
your continued support while we dealt with this. A special
thanks to J. Andrew McKinney, Esquire and Life Member,
without whom we would not have made it through this. Former President, Brian Swift, continues to shepherd
along the Appleseed Program in Maryland (www.
appleseedinfo.org). Currently, AAFG is the only venue in
Maryland offering the Appleseed Program. Our summer
dates have sold out, and I believe that the three autumn
dates also are sold out. Check the Appleseed Web site for
more information and schedules. If you haven’t signed
up for an Appleseed, I recommend that you do so. It is
a great way to spend a weekend. Our partnership will
continue, and AAFG will remain the home of Appleseed
in Maryland. I think it’s only fitting that we do this in the
state capital. Last month, I only built two Liberty Training
Rifles, one for Board Member, Jim Tisack, and one for
legendary rifleman, Dermott Hickey. I have a couple of
other rather interesting projects for another member on
www.aafg.org
the bench and one long-term project for myself. It keeps
me busy and is sure a lot cheaper in the long run than
wine, women, and song! Not to mention it keeps me out
of hot water with the redhead.
Over dinner several weeks ago, Membership Chair, Meg
Clarke, mentioned that she was quite pleased with the new
membership process and that she thought that both the
process and the I&I Committee were working well for
us. After meeting several of the recent applicants, I would
have to agree. We continue to receive applications for
membership, and I couldn’t be happier with the folks who
would like to join our Association. The new process is not
a “rubber stamp.” It requires commitment on the part of
the prospective member and his or her sponsor. I’m all for
commitment. We could use more from quite a few people
in this Association. The work of all is being done by a few.
It reminds me of the observation by Winston Churchill on
the Battle of Britain, “Never have so many owed so much
to so few.”
The Property Stewardship Committee reports that
our variance application has been filed and that a hearing
will be scheduled in due course. Thank you all for your
patience and support as we wind our way through this
rather byzantine process.
Stay safe, and I look forward to seeing more of you at
the General Meetings and on the ranges

2010 Hunter Safety Classes
September 14, 16, 18, 2010
September 28, 30 & October 2, 2010
AF&G offers state certified Maryland hunter safety programs. Classes are open to the public and there is no
minimum age requirement. The course is approximately 14 hours, typically given over two week nights and a
Saturday. Fee for the course is $5.
A
Course Curriculum
T
hese three-day classes are open to the public and there is no minimum age requirement. However, parents are
advised that students under 10 years of age may have difficulty understanding the ethical, legal, and safety concepts
presented in the class. That difficulty, along with the length of the evening sessions, has historically resulted in a low
passing rate for those under 10 and a very low passing rate for those under 8. The course is approximately 14 hours,
given over two week nights and a Saturday. Attendance at all sessions is one of the requirements for passing the class.
AAF&G classes are registered with the MD Department of Natural Resources. Students who successfully complete the
course receive a hunter education – firearms safety card that is recognized in all 50 states and in Canada.

day, but
as the
sun rose
higher,
so did
the temperature. All Shooters were dressed in
their finest Hawaiian duds, getting their safety
instructions and information about recent illness/
injuries of fellow cowboys unable to attend.
Safety brief over, posse assignments given,
firearms check and loading began. Stages were
again compliments of Durango Dude. He himself
was unable to shoot due to recent illness, but
none the less arrived to review the stages and
keep score.
At 10:00 AM, shooting began. Shooters were
reminded throughout the day to drink water
and get out of the sun as much as possible
when not shooting. By 12:45 the smoke had
cleared, Bangin ‘n Clangin was over.
Thirtytwo shooters were hot, hungry and thirsty,
but without heat casualties. Most adjourned to
our favorite watering hole to relax, cool down,
Clinc ‘n Drink and enjoy well known Cowboy
fellowship. Scores were tabulated then bragging
and excuses began.
My thanks to all who braved the heat to make
our Annual Hawaiian shoot a success.
Kudos to:
Robin De Banks, Chris Carson and Gary the
Gambler for clean shoots.
Top shooters for the
day were: Chilliwack Buck, Jingles Jerr and 2
Step, in that order.
Adios for now and may the Good Lord take a
liking to you.
