YORKSHIRE
TERRIER
Oliver’s Real Food
Travellers with dogs welcome
The Yorkshire Terrier is a delightful
little dog with a big personality.
The Yorkie, as they are also referred to, Is a
small, fine-boned, very elegant, little dog
that is easy to carry and doesn’t take up
much space at all.
Yorkies are born black and tan however they
eventually turn blue and gold on maturity
and only shed very lightly (so its one of the
best breeds for allergy sufferers) Regular
grooming is a must and you will have hours
of fun tying top knots to keep the hair
out of their eyes. They are a pocket sized
rocket, lively and inquisitive, with a swift
light-footed gait.
This is a dog that doesn’t need a
lot of exercise, they are happy just
to sit on your lap or keep watch over
your household, they’re always ready
to announce strangers and let you know
when passers by are near.
This little dog is considered peaceful with
other pets but is not so tolerant of little children, either you need to have well behaved,
respectful children or pick another breed.
The Yorkshire Terrier is bright although can
be willfull or mischevious so you will need to
have your wits about you. As with all small
breeds you will need to be very careful that
you dont sit on them or let them leap out
of your arms with all the wriggling that goes
on when they get excited, as they are easily
injured being so tiny. If you have a Yorkie,

good.” A great selection of organic, gluten free food & delicious

you will find them full of spunk, but you will
need to discipline them early on in life.
The Yorkie is an indoors dog, and you
would benefit from having an (autoslide) or
(patiolink) fitted to your sliding door. This
will allow them easy access to your courtyard when nature calls without you having
to lift a finger.
Utilise our Free Wifi and amenities and there are ATM’s instore or

with watered down stock. Freeze until it is
solid and then turn it out onto the grass in
the back yard before you leave for work.
Your dog will lick and chew at the ice enjoying the food and treats on the way and then
have a toy to play with when it’s all done.
Pulling things apart. Does your dog like
to tear things up and pull their toys apart?
Place part of their meal inside empty cereal
or snack food boxes then show them how
to tear it up to get the food inside. You can
even wrap the food in newspaper parcels
for an awesome game. Yep it makes a mess
but a few minutes with a rake at the end of
the day takes care of that. (Of course if your
dog eats things that are not edible this is
not the game for them!)
Have you thought about just how
much time your dog spends waiting for
you to get home on any given day?
Please supervise your dog the first time you
give them any of these activities to check
how they are going to respond and make
sure they are safe.
Just like us, dogs need to be kept mentally
stimulated so their brains stay healthy and
active. Here are some activities you can set
up for your dog when you aren’t home that
will keep them busy and thinking while you
are not there.

a heartwarming
program that

companionship
to those who
need it most.
Together with your special dog you will be able to
make regular visits to health care facilities and offer the
wonderful benefits of pet therapy. This involves spending
time with residents and patients, offering a chat, a floppy
ear to listen and a paw to shake.
Does your dog like to sniff? Throw your dog’s
food out on the lawn or hide handfuls of it
around the back yard so they have to sniff
and scrummage through the grass to find it.

coming up this is a great way to keep your
dog busy. Place one of your dog’s toys,

DENTAL HEALTH
WRITTEN BY DR MAX STOKER
High quality, Healthy, all Natural pet foods and products.
Dental disease is as common in dogs
as it is in humans, although with
humans its usually cavaties and with
dogs the most common form of canine
dental disease is tartar build up.
This causes irritation of the gums around
the base of the teeth (gingivitis), resulting in
exposure of the roots. Ultimately this leads
to infection and tooth loss. This infection can
enter the blood stream and can be carried to
other parts of the body and can cause kidney
and heart problems. So it starts as gum
disease - gingivitis - reddening of the gums
and then progresses under the gum line to
deeper structures of the teeth. The tartar
build up - seperates the gum from the tooth
and this can lead to irreversible periodontal
disease. Some dogs live their whole lives
without any dental problems at all and these
dogs usually live longer, happier, healthy lives.
However, 80% of dogs suffer from some from
of dental disease during their lives. The dogs
that ive seen in my practice that have beautiful white teeth and no halitosis are usually
fed raw meaty bones at least twice a week. It
is best to start with small bones such as raw
chicken necks when they are puppies, even
before they get their permanent teeth at 6
months of age. Larger raw marrow bones are
best for adult dogs. remove bones after dog
has chewed them. Whole bones and brisket
bones are best.

TO WIN A CHRISTMAS HAMPER!
The strengthening of the immune system
is paramount.
Diagnosis... Cancer. Unfortunately
this awful disease is very common
in dogs. Not only old dogs are
affected but also middle aged and
even young ones. The disease
is progressive, sometimes very
aggressive and most of the time in
already advanced stages when the
first clinical signs are noticed.
Treatment options are often limited.
Surgical removal, chemo therapy and
radiation can be considered depending on
the type of cancer, the stage of the disease
and the vitality or debility of the patient,.
Steroid and antibiotic treatment can
temporarily increase the quality of life and
prolong the patients’ longevity.
The immune system plays a significant
role in carcinogenesis, the beginning of
cancer development. Immune cells are
able to identify and to destroy abnormal
cells that could develop into cancer cells.
Furthermore, the immune system is involved
in cancer cell control by modulating certain
chemical messengers (cytokines) that are
involved in cell-to-cell communication.
IMMUNOSTIMULATING AND
IMMUNOMODULATING HERBS
Echinacea (echinacea spp)
Research has shown a significant elevation
of natural killer cells in patients taking
echinacea preparations.
There is also a holistic approach to the
disease. Thanks to extensive research,
mainly in common types of human cancer,
there is a better understanding of the
development of cancer. The importance
of integrative oncology is now firmly
established.
The overall goal in the holistic treatment
approach is to strengthen the patients’
body and not to weaken it, and help to fight
October/November 2015 WOOF MAG 17
These are immune cells that are able to
kill many cancer cells in a process called
cytolysis.
Ashwaganda (withania somnifera)
Clinical studies treating patients with
ashwaganda have shown a significant
increase in life span and a decrease in
cancer cell numbers. Ashwaganda has
the ability to disrupt cell cycles and
the development of new blood vessels
(angiogenesis).
Astragalus (astragalus membranaceus)
This immune enhancing, tonic herb with a
high anti-oxidant activity is used in cancer
patients to increase the immune function,
especially stimulating macrophage and

recognition.
and a healthy, optimised digestion play
a significant role in the wellbeing of the
cancer patient.
MEDICINAL MUSHROOMS
Ganoderma lucidum (reishi), coriolus
(trametes) vesicolor (turkey tail
mushroom) and cordyceps sinensis are
commonly used and well researched
medicinal mushrooms. They are known
to improve immunity, especially in the
adaptive immune system.
Fermented wheat germ extract
Fermented wheat germ extract is
strengthening the immune system, in
humans as well as in animals, and has
additional antimicrobial and antioxidant
properties. It also plays a role in
inflammation prevention and it enhances
digestion by improving the absorption of
nutrients. This makes it very valuable for
cancer patients.
Antioxidant support
Antioxidants protect cells from free radicals
that damage the cell membrane and cell
organs. Damage to the cells can lead to the
development of cancer.
Flavonoids, found in vegetables, herbs and
tea have a very high anti-oxidant activity
and are researched for their ability to kill
cancer cells (cytotoxicity).
Vitamin c (ascorbic acid) has many health
benefits. It also is a strong anti-oxidant. It
helps to preserve cell organs, especially
mitochondria.
Well-functioning mitochondria enable sick
or cancerous cells to commit cell suicide
(apoptosis).
Garlic,ginger, flavonoids, probiotics and
flaxseed are being investigated for their
anti-cancerous activities.
Cancer is a very complex disease and so
are the integrative treatment options.
A holistic approach to the disease and
adjunct naturopathic treatments are
helping many canine cancer patients to
have a better quality of life and longevity.
Turmeric (curcuma longa) and its active
component curcumin is of great interest
in integrative oncology. The strong
antioxidant effects are very valuable, but
additionally, curcumin is involved in the
inhibition of metastasis and local invasion
of cancer cells.
www.herbalpetcare.com.au
Green tea, a very strong anti-oxidant, is
researched as it has shown in human and
animal studies to inhibit the development
of cancer. Compounds of green tea (in
particular polyphenols) can reduce cell
proliferation.
Integrative oncology also incorporates
treatments to reduce inflammation,
support affected organs and to help
the patient’s body to detoxify. Nutrition

SPRING ALLERGY ALERT
WRITTEN BY NADIA CRIGHTON - PIA INSURANCE AUSTRALIA
With spring being the most popular time of
year for allergies many dogs, cats and even
humans suffer from a range of symptoms
including itchy eyes and those dreaded
uncontrollable sneezes.
To find out more about the types of allergies that affect our pets during this time of
year, Dr. Chris Papantonio from the Colyton
Vet Hospital in NSW says:
“Allergies can present themselves quite
quickly and without appropriate treatment
can cause severe reactions to your pet”.
COMMON SYMPTOMS OF
PET ALLERGIES INCLUDE:
• Itchy skin
• Rashes
• Paw chewing
• Scratching
• Persistent
head shaking
• Smelly ears
• Hair loss
• Head scratching
• Excessively
oily skin
• Smelly skin
“If one or more of these symptoms are
present it’s vital you seek veterinary treatment. Pet allergies, particularly on the skin
and ears, need to be controlled so they do
not escalate into other problems, such as
infection”.
Dr. Papantonio also advises seeking help to
avoid future outbreaks whilst doing some
detective work to discover what could be
the main cause for the allergy.
“Avoiding allergens is they key, but the
problem is trying to work out what your
pet is allergic to,” “Pet owners should also
22 www.woofmag.com.au
ensure their parasite
control is up to date
to rule that out as a
cause.”
Consider avoiding
or removing plants
in the garden that
your animal seems
to have a reaction
to and consider
putting your pet on
a hypoallergenic food trial, if your pet has a
food allergy.
There are many treatment options for dogs
and cats suffering from allergy problems,
some can control and treat symptoms and
your local veterinarian can help with which
programs and treatment options are best
for your pet.

“There are a number of medications that
can be used to treat allergies and control
symptoms,” Dr. Papantonio says. “Some are
safer to use than others.” ”There are also
hypoallergenic diets and supplements such
as omega 3 + 6 fatty oils that can be given
to help control the symptoms of allergies.”
Allergy testing and de-sensitisation
programs can also be an option for pets
suffering from chronic allergy issues. These
programs can actually reduce the need for
long-term medications.
“These types of programs can take 6 - 12
months to take effect,” Dr. Papantonio says.

but can assist in controlling their allergies.”.

TEETH AND GUM HEALTH PLAY AN
IMPORTANT ROLE IN WELLBEING
WRITTEN BY SANDI ROGERS - NCTM
The reason why focusing on the
health of the gums and teeth is so
important is due to the link that is
made to most systems of the body.
Although the research available is
linked to humans it stands to reason
that dogs will present with the same
problems.
Mouth health and body health do have a link
and one that should be considered for dogs.
Within this article a case study will be offered

Simply the answer to this is to understand
that bacteria builds up around the gums
and teeth and if saliva is not constantly
washing away bacteria problems begin. If
bacteria builds up on the teeth and onto the
gums, they will become inflamed and often
painful. This inflammatory process and the
chemicals it releases also affects the health
of the teeth and they will decay over time.
This inflammatory process is what causes
breakdown to other parts of the body.
If the body is struggling to heal
inflammation that is out of control in the
mouth the result is ill-health.
How to keep the mouth healthy
Activating saliva is the best and most
natural way. The canines teeth are designed
to rip and tear food and this process
activates the salivary glands. Dry and tinned
foods are not activating the salivary glands
rather they may be blocking them.
Feeding raw meaty bones is the best way of
activating the salivary glands process. Allow
the dog to drag and tear the meat off the
bone. To enhance the action of the salivary
glands sprinkle a small amount of apple
cider vinegar over the meat.

He had been placed on anti-inflammatory
by the veterinarian and initially they worked
but over the past 8 weeks even with an
increase in mgs no improvement was noted.
Roger was also administered by his owner 2
x 750mgs emu oil capsules daily.
Roger was presented for a massage and
to assess joints, muscles and Range of
Movement.
Throughout the massage Roger was ‘head
shy’ meaning anytime you went near the
head he reacted. Throughout the balance

of the massage the temperature around all
joints increased significantly.
As part of the ‘head shy’ reaction his
mouth was examined and it was found he
had 7 very bad teeth and his gums were
very much inflamed. His breath was foul
indicating this situation had been there for
quite some time. The owner confirmed the
veterinarian had indicated some time ago
the gums needed attention but there was
no follow through.
Recommendation: The recommendation
was seek professional advise immediately
and following this treatment we would reassess in one month following treatment.
Within one month of the surgery Roger had
no restriction in movement, was not ‘headshy’ and was very active.
IMPROVE PERFORMANCE AND MAINTAIN
YOUR ANIMALS IN PEAK CONDITION.
Conclusion: The teeth were causing
the problem here as his infected gums
and decayed teeth were causing havoc
throughout the entire body. Over such
an extended period of time the infection
started to seep into other cells as they
traversed the body.
Always keep a close eye on gums and
teeth; if they start to become inflamed the
problem may not remain to be isolated to
the mouth.
Outcome: Roger had 7 teeth removed and
was put onto two courses of antibiotics.

CANINE ASTROLOGY - SAGGITARIUS
WRITTEN BY ANUSKA LAPRADE
Saggitarius dog is one crazy canine
character that will keep you bemused
and constantly guessing. Half dog,
half horse and a powerhouse of
energy to unleash on the world, (and
their owners). This is a restless dog
often appearing unsettled because
of the inner conflict that is akin to the
sign of Saggitarius.
Although outwardly content to dazzle you
with their antics, internally they secretly desire your approval and reassurance needing
to know, that they are (it) in your world.
Saggitarius gets along especially well with
Aries owners, the two will be happy together but it wont matter what star sign you
are because...
Your Saggitarius dog will sway everything
his way, it will be his way or the highway,
simply because this dog needs to control
things, and yet...they need you, they want
you, they just cant find that peaceful place
inside. This is a loveable dog with a quirky
character
Keep your Saggitarius Dog well exercised
as they need plenty of space and fresh air,
they do not like to be confined and they will
not fare well in an apartment or small space,
they simply need room to move to let off
steam when one of their moods takes hold.
Saggitarius creatures are forever, seeking
the next thrill, or burst of excitement, constantly looking for the new horizon, like the
archer with the bow, one minute calm and
composed, the next they are off.
You will not need to molly coddle this
dog, which is great, they are happy doing
things their own way but be aware that the
Saggitarius dog can be prone to obsessive
compulsive disorders, becoming fixated
with certain toys or items around the home,
so you may find it necessary to mix things
up a bit, dont let them get bored. Introduce
new games and toys often to keep them
stimulated.

CANINE ASTROLOGY - CAPRICORN
WRITTEN BY ANUSKA LAPRADE
The Capricorn Dog has an incredibly
ambitious nature, always gauging
how to better themselves and their
owners with theatrical performance
and athletic ability.
This dog is what you call a real socialite,
always wanting to scale the ladder of
popularity with you and your friends, infact
anyone that might be in their line of sight.
Although generally reserved by nature,
they have this innate ability to know exactly
when to make their move, to shimmy the
neighbours balcony (to impress the cat) or
rushing out to bring their owners the morning newspaper.
The practical, earthy side of Capricorn
though, means this dog is willing to undertake a little hard work, although sometimes
their enthusiasm wears out before their
work is done. Perhaps lagging behind on
that morning jog, somewhat distracted in
thought. They often appear quite stubborn
and the commands or calls of their owners
may fall on deaf ears. Its just that this dog
has great plans, and you may have interrupted them dreaming up some new found
position in life...this dog who would be well
suited to royalty, or celebrity status, always
seaking a better positon in life, aiming to
get to the top socially.
You will also find your Capricorn dog
inspires you to raise your own personal bar
as well and without an inkling as to how this
has happened you will notice things just fall
into place, they are a very house proud dog
The Capricorn dog is happy to accept his
lot in life, and will be an obediant companion, however there is nothing to stop him
from dreaming and he is after all (a legend
in his own mind).
Your Capricorn Dog will be well suited to
a Virgo owner as they are organized and a
perfectionist by nature.. Taurus and Libra
owners will also get along well with this
canine, but what ever you do dont bring a
Saggitarius into the picture...its not likely
this will be tolerated
Overall... Capricorn dog is a great
family dog, with tons of personality.

TICKS
WRITTEN BY WOOF MAG
tick to wind up on the jawline or the inside
of the mouth. Check legs, between toes on
paws, along their body and tail area including between their legs and genital regions.
If you do find a tick you will want to remove
it very carefully and then seek advise from
your Vet!
The Paralysis Tick is a real problem in
Australia and every year thousands
of Dogs are struck down with this
nasty little parasite. Finding your dog
dragging his back legs behind him,
looking at you helplessly as the life
is literally being sucked right out of
them, has to be the most frightening
senario a Dog owner has to deal with.
Ticks can be found all year round on the
East Coast of Australia. They are always
there, but are more prevalent in Spring and
Summer.
Taking Precautions is the best way to minimize the likelyhood of your Dog being bitten. Use natural repellants where possilbe.
Avoid walking your dog in bushy, scrub like
areas, keep your yard free of debris, and
mow regularly. Well kept properties are less
likely to attract ticks or the wildlife that they
are often carried in on.
Check your dog for ticks regularly, groom
them often and use your fingers to feel for
any noticeable lumps, checking ears, neck,
head and mouth. It is not uncommon for a

DO NOT PULL IT OUT BY THE BODY or
you will force more poision into the dog. If
you dont have a tick remover you can purchase one off the internet or from your local
vet or pet supply store.
Tick Removal
Step 1
Use a pair of fine tipped tweezers or a
special tick removal instrument like “The
Safecard.” This allows the removal of the
tick without squeezing the tick body. This
is important so you do not crush the tick
and force harmful bacterial into your dogs
bloodstream.
Step 2
Grab the tick by the head or mouth parts
right where they enter the skin, (not the
body). Without jerking, pull firmly and
steadily outwards. Do not twist the tick as
you are pulling. (using methods such as
applying petroleum jelly, a hot match or
alcohol will NOT cause the tick to back out.
Step 3
After removing the tick, place it in a jar of
alcohol to kill it. Ticks are NOT killed by
flusing them down the toilet. Clean the bite
wound with disinfectant and wash hands.

PATH TO WELLNESS
AUTOSLIDE
WRITTEN BY DR RENEE O’DUHRING
THE AUTOMATIC
SLIDING DOOR SYSTEM
NO NEED FOR PET DOORS!
Feeding a Natural Diet is the most
important step on The Path to Wellness. Much has been written about
what constitutes a natural diet for
dogs. A lot of raw feeding philosophy is based on the premise that
dogs are genetically almost identical
to wolves, and henceforth should be
fed their ‘ancestral’ diet, kind of like
the Paleo movement for dogs.
Certainly all dog breeds share most of their
DNA with the wolf, but this does not mean
they are the same - did you know we share
approximately 50% of our DNA with the
banana?
Clearly dogs have the digestive tract of a
carnivore, with hunting teeth, acidic stomach, and short intestines for rapid transit of
prey, but they have also evolved through
periods of famine scavenging non-prey
foods, including fruit, eggs, manure, and
human leftovers, and they are adapted to
34 www.woofmag.com.au
thrive when a variety of foods are eaten.
In the wild, a dog would hunt smaller prey
animals, such as rabbits and birds, if hunting
on their own, or larger animals, such as deer
or sheep if hunting in a pack. They would
eat almost the entire carcass, including the
muscle meat, organ meats, parts of the
digestive tract, sinew and tendons, blood,
bones, and some skin and fur or feathers.
In between hunts they would either fast, or
seek out other foods such as eggs in a nest,
or ripe fruits that had fallen from a tree.
They would also graze on fresh grasses,
herbs and weeds.
In our urban environment it is rather unpractical to send your dog out hunting for
his dinner, but you can provide the same
nutritional building blocks by feeding fresh,
whole, raw foods as they would be found in
nature. In the next edition I will show you
how to do this!

Most dogs and cats, given the opportunity, will eat grass occasionally or
even on a regular basis because they
know instinctively that it improves
their digestive health. But unfortunately, grass isn’t typically very nutritious, even pet grass, and outdoor
grass is often loaded with fertilizers,
herbicides, pesticides, animal waste,
potential parasites, and other contaminants.
If your pet likes or needs to eat grass now
and then, my question is, have you considered growing your own sunflower sprouts
to offer instead? Sprouts can provide a very
easy and inexpensive source of fresh, live
organic vegetation for your dog or cat to
nibble on.
Seeds are the first life stage of a plant, and
sprouts are the second stage of a plant’s
life. They are the tiny stems of the plants
that emerge from wet seeds before they put
down roots and become full-grown plants.
After a few days of germinating, these little
plants are packed with a ton of nutrients. In
fact, pound for pound, many sprouts contain significantly more digestible vitamins,
minerals, proteins, and enzymes
than the adult versions of the same plants.
Sprouts are rich in enzymes, making them
almost pre-digested, similar to plant matter
that wild dogs and cats ingest from the
stomach contents and GI tracts of prey animals. Unlike vegetables, which can be difficult for pets to digest if they’re consumed
whole, during sprouting much of the starch
that’s contained in the plant seed is broken
down into simple sugars by amylase. The
proteins are converted into amino acids and
amides by protease, and the fats and oils
are turned into simple fatty acids by lipase.
Benefits of Sprouts
Sprouts have many beneficial attributes. For
example: They support cell regeneration
They are powerful, natural, and whole food
sources of antioxidants, minerals, vitamins,
and enzymes that protect against free radical damage They have an alkalizing effect
on the body that is thought to protect
against disease, including cancer, since
many types of tumors and cancers put the
body into a state of acidity and cancers put
the body into a state of acidity.
They are abundantly rich in oxygen, which
can also help protect against abnormal cell
growth, viruses, and bacteria that cannot

survive in an oxygen-rich environment
In addition to their nutritional benefits,
sunflower sprouts are also the ultimate in
homegrown foods. When you grow them
yourself using organic seeds, you can be
sure you’re not exposing your pet to harmful pesticides or other chemicals.
Sunflower sprouts are also among the least
expensive foods you can buy or grow for
your pet to “graze” on. Interestingly, if we
don’t provide living foods for our cats to
eat, they often end up snacking on our
houseplants. Since many kitties also tend
to immediately throw up after nibbling a
houseplant, and because some houseplants are toxic, sprouts are a really safe
and healthy alternative. If you grow them
yourself, you can cut the cost by about 90
percent or more compared to buying them.
Sprouting Process
When sprouting your own seeds, it’s best
to ensure they haven’t been chemically
treated, so buy organic seeds. Soak them
overnight in water in a Mason jar covered
with a mesh sprouting screen. The soak
time depends on the type of seed you’re
sprouting: 5 hours for small seeds and up to
12 hours for really large seeds and grains.
In the morning, drain the fluid off (I water
my plants with it) and rinse the seeds. Turn
the jar on its side and repeat the process
three times a day until the seeds sprout.
On average, sprouting time is about three
days. Rinsing and draining the seeds
three times a day gives them just the right
amount of moisture, and also helps flush
away toxins.
Your container should be about a quarter to
a third full of seeds, since they will swell to
around eight times their original size over
three days. I recommend keeping the jar
at room temperature with good air circula38 www.woofmag.com.au
tion. At my house, I put it under the counter
beneath my kitchen sink.
Once the green tips start to appear on the
sprouts, you can begin feeding them to
your pets right away, or you can refrigerate
them, or plant them. Another option is to
grow your seeds in potting soil, which is
how Dr. Mercola does it. I like the sprouting
phase because it speeds the process up.
When grown in soil, you can harvest your
sprouts in about a week.
A pound of seeds will produce at least 10
pounds of sunflower sprouts, which is a
great yield.
Of all the different kinds of sprouts, sunflower shoots produce the most volume. In
one 10” x 10” tray, you can harvest between
1 and 2 pounds of sunflower sprouts. You
can store them in the refrigerator for about
a week after harvesting.
Feeding Sprouts to Your Pet
At my house, I simply put the tray down on
the ground and let my pack nibble on them
throughout the day. In the evening, I put
them up on the counter and my kitties usually continue to snack on them overnight.
If you’re sharing your harvest with your family, you can snip off sprouts, and then put
them in your pet’s food bowl or on top of
their regular food. All of my pets regulate
their sprouts intake really well, so I don’t
have to limit their access.
However, if you happen to have a dog that
obsesses over sprouts, you’re not going
to put the tray on the ground because he
might gorge himself. Instead, as a general guideline, you can offer about 1/8 to
1/4 cup of sprouts for every 20 pounds of
body weight each day. So for example,
your 80-pound dog can eat up to 1 cup of
sprouts per day. For your 10-pound cat, 1/16
to 1/8 cup per day is plenty.

HOMEOPATHY
WRITTEN BY LYNDALL CLYNE
Animals respond to homoeopathic
remedies in much the same way as
people do. There are many similarities
between animal and human problems
such as arthritic, muscular and joint
pain, emotional upsets, allergies and
skin conditions, accidents, colds and
numerous other conditions.
I have been practising homoeopathy for
over thirty years and became passionate
about homoeopathy after I watched my
daughter recover from a terrible accident
and return to vibrant health.
Homoeopathy is a system of natural medicine with a proven track record as being a
safe, cost effective system of medicine that
is recognized by the World Health Organization and of which the “Royal Family” are
patrons.
Homoeopathy is a healing discipline that
works on the principle of “like cures like”.
The remedies are tailor made to suit the
needs of the patient
I first became aware of how quick and effective homoeopathy was when I worked
on my own animals, carefully watching their
moods and behaviour and accordingly
made a matching remedy that I placed in
their water bowl.
It was always such a delight to see them
return to health. It is indeed proof that
homoeopathy works because animals do
not have the ability to think and create the
placebo effect.
My most wonderful experience was to see
my daughter’s dog return to health. He
came to me deaf and almost blind with
cataracts with his hind quarters withered.
I made the remedies according to these
symptoms.
After about 2 weeks I remember throwing
a bone out in the yard for Tinker to find by
smell, but when I threw it I noticed his head
followed the bone.
Puzzled I threw another one and again
he watched it and went straight to it. The
remedy had alleviated his deafness and
reduced his cataracts
I am committed to empower people with
knowledge that gives them choice for themselves and for their pets
I look forward to corresponding with you
and helping you in future issues.

CLIPPING YOUR
DOGS NAILS
BEFORE
WRITTEN BY LEE - ANNE DUKE
BEFORE
This is one of the most feared maintenance jobs for a dog owner – nail
trimming!
Even if your dog runs on hard surfaces ,
which will keep most of the nails short, there
may be the the odd one that still needs
trimming. Similarly to a car tyre wear which
is often a direct result of the wheel alignment, some dogs joints in the upper leg are
at different angles and this makes their nails
contact to the ground vary therefore some
nails are short and some are in need of
trimming. Also there is the dew claw which
never makes contact with the ground and
can grow quite long if not trimmed.
So why trim the nails – if the nails stay long
this may cause pain in the dogs feet either
because the nail is pushed back into the nail
base area or pushing the whole toe in an
unusual angle causing it to twist out which
over time could even lead to arthritis.
Dogs toe nails have the nail wall and the
quick – the quick (pink colour) is a blood
supply that runs down the inside of the
nail. If your dog has white nails this is easy
to see. If your dog has black nails look on
the underside of the nail – you will notice
a hollow part at the tip of the nail where
the outer wall of the nail has grown but the
quick is back further in the fuller solid part.
If a dogs nails grow long then the quick of
the nail will also grow long, yet as you trim
small amount off the nail tip and reduce
the overall length of the nail the quick will
shrink up in the nail. It is always a good idea
when patting and cuddling your dog to
spend some time touching and holding the
42 www.woofmag.com.au
feet this will desensitise the foot area.
There are many types of nail clippers on the
market, I suggest you pick whichever you
feel comfortable with and as long as it is
sharp it will do the job.
Just remember over time nail clippers
become blunt you will notice this when you
cut the nail it is either crushing the nail or
not giving a clean cut, at this point either
have them sharpened or buy a new pair.
First things first – Take a deep breath and
relax as your dog will pick up on your tension. Now examine the nails in very good
light, if the nail is white look for the pink
area (if black look for the hollow underneath) and establish how much nail to cut
then hold the foot in the palm of your hand
(hold firm but gentle) and cut in a 45 degree
angle. Remember each nail may be different so check each one before you cut. You
don’t need to cut the whole amount of nail
off as trimming a small amount frequently
will keep it as a positive experience and
remember to have some special dog treats
around as a reward. After trimming I use a
piece of sand paper or a nail file to smooth
off any sharp nail edges
If you clip the nail a bit too short - don’t
panic – reassure your dog and quickly give
a treat to distract and pacify. If it is bleeding apply pressure, if it persists then apply
some styptic powder or if you don’t have
any you can rub a clean bar of soap on the
cut surface.
I usually trim the nails every two to four
weeks

nutrition for your best friend.
Over time, environmental, lifestyle and nutrition
shortfalls can lead to a range of health concerns,
some chronic which require ongoing expensive
treatment and care; others can be terminal
which is devastating for both you and your
animal companion.
What you may not know is that there are a wide
range of preventative measures and healing
alternatives for you to explore. MasterChops
will be filled with lots of simple and practical
tips and protocols for both veterinarians and
canine parents to take away.
The panel will discuss methods to address the
root of problems rather than managing
symptoms. Topics include canine cancer, skin
problems, worming, vaccines, arthritis, IBD,
pancreatitis and digestive upsets.
See you at MasterChops on 14th November!
