Augustinian Reflections on the Trinity
By: Richmond Goolsby
Various Quotes from Teaching Christianity
There is great strength for the Christian’s faith in the reflections of
enjoyment Augustine finds in the Trinity. His teaching that “God; Father, Son
and Holy Spirit, is the ultimate thing to be enjoyed” (108) will provide soul
satisfaction for all who will embrace Trinitarian love. He says the Trinity is the
“one supreme thing” (108) which is not easily named so it is better to say “that
this Trinity is the one God from whom are all things, through whom all things, in
whom all things (Rom. 11:36)” (108). Any Christian will find great joy in
reflecting upon the depth of Trinitarian unity. Each person, Father, Son, and

God the Father by the power of the Holy Spirit as He conforms us to the image of
His perfectly beautiful Son. Each work is to be savored for all its succulent
sweetness. “Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good!” (Ps. 34:8) In each person
of the Trinity, He is good. In the fullness of His triuneness, there is elation for the
weary. In every divine work there is the sweetness of heavenly manna to be
savored. May we not settle for lesser things. Let us set all our senses and
affections upon “the brightness of His glory” (Heb. 1:2) and find the power of
unity in the diversity of the Trinity.
