Seniors in Action - Cherokee County Senior
Seniors in Action Clay/Cherokee County Senior Games/SilverArts September 2014 2014 Begins With New Name, New Games What’s in a Name? Jim Bent A lot of pride goes into a name, therefore Cherokee County Senior Games/SilverArts is now Cherokee/Clay County Senior Games/SilverArts. Over the years some Clay County participants expressed a desire to be recognized equally with Cherokee County. In order to accomplish this, three things needed to happen. They were to get more support from Clay County in participants, parks and recreation and financially. All three happened and going forward we will be known as Cherokee/Clay County Senior Games. Our name has changed and we are proud to have such a group from Clay County participate in the Senior Games. Clay County hosted pickleball for the games this year as they will in the future. A win/ win for all! Pickleball Joins the Games This was the first year Pickleball was added to the games and it is a local hit. Called “America’s newest racquet sport,” Joel Pritchard and Bill Bell in Bainbridge Island WA began the game in 1965. It was first played with pingpong paddles and a badminton net. Thanks to donors Glen Davis, Coreen Howard, Cecelia Tucker, and Marshal Tucker for assistance with the equipment, etc. Our first athletes to compete at the state games in pickleball will be Charles Brown, Desna Jarrett, and Harry Jarrett. Workshops in Clay County introduced the sport to our Games. Now at Konehete Park in Murphy, MWF at 10:15 and T Th S at 9 AM Pickleball players practice and everyone is welcome to try it out. In contrast to Pickleball, the other sport added to the Games this year, Bocce, may be the world’s oldest game, and is said to be the world’s second most popular game, with soccer being the world’s most popular. See p. 6 for more about Bocce. 2 Our Sponsors A Jem’s Gems Alpine Veterinary Hospital AmeriLife & Health Services Birdsong Beads & Design Blue Mountain Coffee & Grill Blue Ridge Mountain EMC Cherokee County Clay County Edward Jones – John Mattox ERA Carolina Mountain Homes Family Life Chiropractic Center II Farley Insurance First Citizen Bank Galloway’s Automotive Gibson Shoe Store Grape Creek CDC Grape Creek NCECA Heritage Propane Humana Ivie Funeral Home, Inc. Oldest Sport Added To Games Bocce history at bocce.org calls it the oldest sport, shown in picture dated 5,200 BC. Bacce (the root of the name means “boss”) was played by Callileo, DaVinci, Elizabeth I, and George Washington had a bocce court at Mt. Vernon. The site records that the game has been banned. Kings of Spain Carlos IV and V banned it. In 1576, players were fined and imprisoned. It was so popular that it took time away from practice in military exercises like archery. At one time the Catholic Church declared it was “a means of gambling.” Janet Paul, Jane Hembree, and Jim Paul will be the first local competitors in Bocce at the NC State Games. 7 Medical Pearls for Seniors Tidbits, Exercise, and Injuries By Joseph H. Keffer, M.D A few tidbits from the Harvard Health Letter of interest to all seniors: 1. About keeping you from sleep: beware of hidden sources of caffeine being added to drinks including colas, root beers, cocoa, chocolate milk, energy water, flavoured liqueurs, and iced tea, frosting, mints, gummy bears, and even sunflower seeds. If it is added to the ingredients, it will be listed. Look for trigger words such as “energy” or “wired.” 2. About sleep medications: Don’t drive with sleep aids in your system. You may know you are affected if you have a hard time getting up in the morning or you are groggy. You need to know if the sleep aid is still in your system. Some are short acting such as Ambien, while others last longer such as Lunesta or Restoril. Dalmane and Klonopin are longer acting. Speak with your pharmacist to learn about your sleep aid. 3. Be careful about your medications and supplements. Get to know them and identify them. Make a list. 29% or adults take five or more medications. It isn’t surprising that they often get confused and take too much or too little. 4. While fruit juice is good, the whole fruit is better. Drinking juice may increase your chances of developing diabetes while eating two servings per week of whole fruits such as blueberries, grapes and apples is associated with a 23% reduction in risk of diabetes. About exercise and injuries: Pickleball has recently been added to the menu of sports offered by the Senior Games. But, as in all sporting activities, we need to take care of our bodies by warming up and appropriate stretching exercises. The USA Pickelball Association has an excellent set of guidelines for minimizing injury related to this sport and it probably applies to all our senior activities. Check it out at http:/training.usapa.org/ health%26safety . “Prevention is the key to reducing injuries. Warm-up, stretch, play, stretch and cool down.” Many specifics are available on the website that make sense. The medical literature confirms that the “Mature” athlete has issues, as reflected in the following quotes from the current medical literature: “Aging changes the biology, healing capacity”, and “-biomechanical function of tendons and ligaments and results in common clinical pathologies that present to---” physicians. And, “Tendons and ligaments are highly arranged connective tissue structures that maintain joint motion and joint stability. These structures are subject to vascular and compositional changes with increasing age that alter their mechanotransduction, biology, healing capacity, and biomechanical function.” “The incidence of acute Achilles tendon ruptures is on the rise. This is thought to be due to the increasing number of middle-aged persons participating in athletic and/or strenuous activity.” These quotations are not intended to discourage our fellow seniors from appropriate physical activity but to inspire the respectful care of our bodies as advocated in the Pickleball guidelines and with the appropriate assessment and guidance of your physician.
