God calls Saint Clement Parish
to be a welcoming, worshipping
community of faith, hope, and love.
A Reflection From Deacon Paul:
The Book of Revelation
During this Easter season the second reading each
Sunday has come from the Book of Revelation. In
Orthodox and many Protestant translations of the
bible this book is called the Apocalypse from the
Greek title of the book. The Greek word
Apocalypse means a disclosure of knowledge, in
religious contexts it is usually a disclosure of something
hidden. This type of literature was written during periods
of intense persecution of the faithful. Such works typically
describe the process through which a human visionary
receives secret knowledge about the future and the
cosmos from a heavenly being. The revealing figure is
usually an angel in Jewish apocalypses and the risen Christ
in Christian works. The revelation is often given through
symbolic visions or journeys to heaven or other places
normally inaccessible to humans. The book of Daniel and
Revelation belong to this group. Daniel was written in
response to the persecution of the Jewish people by
Antiochus Epiphanes in the second century BC and reviews
history from the Babylonian captivity until the end.
Revelation was written to articulate the Christian vision of
reality in opposition to the violent persecution by the
Roman Empire. The revelation which John receives is that
of the ultimate victory of good over evil and the end of the
present age.
