PRESS RELEASE
3rd International Istanbul Smart Grid Congress and Fair was organized by HBB EXPO Company
between the dates of 29th-30th April 2015 in Istanbul Halic Congress Center. The Congress
was organized under the leadership of Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology, T.R.
Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and UGETAM (Istanbul Applied Gas and Energy
Technologies Research and Engineering Industry and Commerce Inc.) and main sponsors
Turkcell, Vodafone, Turkish Radio and Television Administration and Sabah Newspaper.
Esteemed participations by, most notably Mr. Taner Yıldız, Minister of Energy and Natural
Resources of Turkey; Mr. Ibrahim Halil Mazıcıoğlu, Chairman, Industry, Commerce, Energy,
Natural Resources, Information and Technology Commission; Mr. Vasip Şahin, Governor of
Istanbul; Mr. Mustafa Yılmaz, President, Energy Market Regulatory Authority of Turkey and
many other executive officers of the government.
The first International Istanbul Congress on Smart Grids (ICSG Istanbul 2013) was opened
on the date of 9th May 2013 by President of Republic, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Now, on its 3rd
year, ICSG Istanbul 2015 is accepted in world fairs list. With the participation of thousands of
experts and academicians, we are taking firm steps as a congress and fair that contributes
promotion of Turkey on international platforms.
Opening speeches were delivered by Prof. Dr. Ümit Doğay ARINÇ, Chairman of ICSG Istanbul
2015 Congress and Fair; Dr. Hayri BARAÇLI, Secretery-General of Istanbul Metropolitan
Municipality; Mr. Mustafa YILMAZ, President of Energy Market Regulatory Authority of
Turkey; Mr. Taner YILDIZ, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey and Mr. Fikri
IŞIK, Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology of Turkey.
Great Power Outage around the country has underlined the importance of transition to
Smart Grids.
The great power outage in all around Turkey on the date of 31st March 2015 highlighted
the necessity to use information technologies in grid operation. In order to bring forward
the importance of smart grid – electricity networks connection many sessions were held
on “Smart Grids in Context of Current Situation and Future of Turkey’s Electricity Grid”.
Top experts from the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey, EMRA, TEDAŞ,
TEİAŞ, EÜAŞ, TATAŞ and ELDER as well as many other private, public and nongovernmental
organizations and agencies presented valuable information during “3rd International
Istanbul Congress on Smart Grids”.
Many globally renowned keynote speakers attended the Congress.
Mr. John McDonald, Energy Advisor to the Whitehouse and Prof. Dr. Ömer USTA, Chair, IEEE
PES Turkey were the Keynote Speakers in ICSG Istanbul 2015 Congress and Fair.

Energy Informatics Department, Denmark University.
In addition to bilateral business discussions and agreement negotiations, many global and
local energy-related aspects were discussed in Istanbul Halic Congress Center during ICSG
Istanbul 2015. Experts from governmental delegations as well as top executives of multinational corporations discussed important agenda topics during various sessions. The
participants were able to be informed about important news and developments especially
in 6th Hall which was the venue of many discussions.
Governmental Delegations in ICSG Istanbul 2015
Delegations from U.S.A., U.K., France, Italy, Holland, Canada, Denmark, Spain, CIS Countries,
Central and Eastern Africa, South America and Middle East Countries attended ICSG Istanbul
2015 and convened in bilateral and multilateral meetings. Bilateral meetings also created
opportunities for fair participants to develop new co-operations with foreign companies. Fair
is supported by T.R. Ministry of Economy which also organized a “Procurement Committee”
for the fair.
Over 150 local and international enterprises opened booths in the fairground and had
opportunity to meet with their pairs in bilateral meetings.
Awards
Valuable awards such as Best Graduate Student Paper Award, Best Researcher Paper Award,
and Best Undergraduate Student Paper Award were delivered in ICSG Istanbul 2015.
Preparations for posters and papers was started on 1st July 2014 by ICSG Istanbul 2015
Science Committee and respective sub-committees were formed. In order to ensure
scientific quality and renown, IEEE-PES was assigned as technical sponsor and the posters
and papers fulfilling IEEE-PES format were assessed in fonts, election assessment and scores,
scientific ethics and against plagiarism.
Each poster and paper was assessed by sub-committees consisting 5 expert academy
members in the relevant field. A total number of 67 posters and papers were submitted to
the committees and 47 of these were assessed. Upon assessment 1st, 2nd and 3rd place
winners were selected in 3 categories.
A total number of 5000 people from over 50 countries including domestic and international
representatives from public agencies, international metrology and standardization
organizations, international smart grid NGOs, electricity, water and gas meter manufacturers
and importers, electricity and natural gas distribution companies, organized industrial zone
administrations, municipalities, conformity certification agencies, automation companies,
inspection, test and calibration organizations, R&D firms, energy generation/transmission/
distribution companies, GSM operators, smart building firms and software companies
participated to “3rd Istanbul International Smart Grid Congress and Fair” which was held
between the dates of 29-30 April 2015 in Halic Congress Center.
ICSG Istanbul 2016 will be held again in Halic Congress Center between the dates of 20-21
April 2016.

ICSG ISTANBUL 2015 PAPERS AND POSTERS
To achieve scientific quality and renown, IEEE-PESS Technical Sponsorship was obtained (IEE Smart Grids); therefore, wording
format, election assessment and scoring, scientific ethics and plagiarism were addressed in IEEE PES format. Awards were given
in three categories: Young Researcher Best Paper Award, Undergraduate Student Best Paper Award and Graduate Student Best
Paper Award. Among 85 extended abstracts, 47 papers were accepted for presentation and 12 papers were chosen for poster. The
papers were assessed by 13 reviewers.

Outputs of the Congress
The congress fulfilled the leadership role for determination of smart grid strategy and course of Turkey within the scope of 2023
vision of the country.
The congress brought all the stakeholders together to facilitate exchange of opinions and information on developments in smart
grids.
The companies had an opportunity to exhibit their products on their booths.
By providing information on the smart grid projects implemented in all around the world, the congress gave birth to new ideas
for implementation of such projects in Turkey.
The congress also facilitated stakeholders to discuss possible problems that may occur during transition to smart grid systems and
solutions to such problems.
The congress acted as a guide for distribution companies and administrations to reduce leakage / loss rates in energy.
The congress highlighted the subject of replacing existing meters with smart meters in Turkey.
The congress also underlined the importance of the use of renewable energy resources like wind and solar energy instead of fossil
fuels like petrol and natural gas.
The congress encouraged the manufacturers to conduct R&D works on relevant subjects to develop and manufacture products
with high-added value.
The congress underlined the importance of starting works on smart grid transition of existing grids.
The congress prepared Turkey for the energy infrastructure of the future.

ICSG Istanbul 2015 Congress and Fair was a great success for CYIENT. We had an opportunity to meet not
