“WHERE EVERY STUDENT COUNTS”
IN THIS ISSUE
A Message from the Principal
Second semester has begun. It’s a new year,
new semester, new commitments. Each
semester brings with it a different set of
responsibilities that lead us to our intended
goal. You will find that all the educators and
students at Warwick continue to work
toward their goals of excellence which comes
from continued high expectations and a
persistent message that all students will be
3
engaged: (E ) Education x Engagement =
Excellence. We are still very excited.
Writing and engagement continues to be the
focus for this school year. We write in every
class since research shows that a narrow lens
on writing leads to increased academic
performance in all areas. Our elective classes
all participate in our preparatory measures
toward improving SOL scores. One day per
week, all elective classes work on an SOL
concept. Our core classes are not accepting
mediocrity. We are pushing students in our
efforts to help them realize that they can do
so much more than they believe. The English
department is highlighting Performance
Assessments. The math department is
stressing algebraic and geometrical
concepts. The social sciences department is
accenting the importance of analyzing and
exploring geographical, regional, cultural,
and political perspectives. The science
department is spotlighting student
independence in labs. It is indeed an
exciting time to be a part of the teaching and
learning atmosphere.
Our exuberance extends in and beyond
classroom hours. While we work with
students during classroom hours in large
groups, small groups, and individual
conferences, we also employ a few other
improvement strategies and best practices
that we know work. We teach to our
strengths; we have Flex Fridays; we have
Saturday School; we have lunch tutorials; we
have after-school tutoring; and University
tutors, to name a few. Both students and
educators are working hard, being
challenged, and ever seeking to do more.
Our added focus of engagement this year
reminds us each day of the immense
importance of partnerships. Families, we
need your help. We see where you have
helped by stressing the academics.
Ready, Set, Test!!!
Students have been preparing all year for important
assessments, including SOLs and industry certification
exams. Find important upcoming test dates inside.

Students are taking more pride in their work.
We have seen the improvement in behavior.
Overall, students display a positive attitude.
Our new attendance staff members, Mrs.
Miller and Mrs. Starks, need your help in the
area of attendance. Help us by making sure
your child is in school every day, on time. You
know the value that careers and higher
academia place on attendance. Students
miss valuable instructional experiences when
they are absent or late. We are working to
remove obstacles. You are better and more
equipped than we are to assist us in this area.
We thank you in advance as we all strive to
help students accomplish their goals.
Gerald, join forces with Mr. Perkins to
encourage students to remain focused so
they can graduate on time. We stress the
virtues of good citizenship each month, and
we recognize students who have exhibited
exemplary character traits. We are
committed to students and their futures.
Encourage students to join an athletic team
or club or to participate in school activities.
And, remember to attend athletic events and
other school performances. Families, there is
an open invitation to visit your
child’s/children’s classes. Again, come
observe, learn, and lend your expertise to the
mission of Warwick High.
As we work to develop the whole child, we
continue to infuse Career Pathways in the
fabric of the school. Our new College and
Career specialist, Ms. Dennis, is there to
guide students towards scholarships and
college and career choices. We need
everyone to remind students to visit the
College and Career Center. Our new
Graduation Coaches, Ms. Stancil and Mr.

Assistant Principal of
Operations
As we enter the final semester we start
to prepare for our seniors final walk. We
encourage our seniors to apply for
financial aid and various scholarships.
We also continue to focus on keeping
our school safe, improving attendance
and student involvement. We encourage
all of our students to participate in a
spring sport. Our spring season will be
starting within the next two weeks. As
we continue to improve attendance, we
encourage parents to assist with getting
their child to school on time each and
every day. Any student who has an
attendance problem will be subject to

opportunity to thank our students for a
great first half of the year and encourage
all of them to continue to maintain the
standard.
It has been a wonderful year thus far,
and I would like to challenge each and
every staff member, student, and parent
to continue on a path of excellence.

Message from the
Assistant Principal of
Instruction
Dear Raider Family,
I am certainly excited to begin the
second semester with you. Each
department is working diligently to
reinforce instructional delivery, student
engagement, and writing. Teachers who
teach SOL classes are preparing
students for the March Writing and the
May Non-Writing SOL tests. We will
hold many after school and Super
Saturday sessions to prepare students
for these upcoming assessments. It is
our goal that we have a 100% pass rate
on these assessments; therefore, each
student is being encouraged every day
to do his or her best.
Guidance Notes
Respectfully,
SAT Word of the Day
Each day, students can participate in the
Word of the Day challenge. Students
are informed of a specially selected word
and its definition during the morning
announcements. Those who are able to
correctly use the word in a sentence are
entered in a drawing. Winners are
recognized and rewarded with gift cards.
Writing Wednesdays
The CTE and English departments have
partnered to strengthen student writing
skills. Every Wednesday, students in all
CTE classes receive writing
assignments which are
designed to build
their usage,
grammar, and
style skills.
Warwick is a school that advocates for
continuous professional learning, and all
teachers have been engaged in various
professional development opportunities
to strengthen their pedagogical
knowledge-base. These experiences will
ultimately improve instructional
performance and increase student
achievement.

Clubs and Activities: There’s A Place for You!
At Warwick High School, we have a
diverse offering of clubs and activities.
Every student is encouraged to
participate in a club or activity. Why?
There are open clubs, clubs which are
open to all students, grade level clubs,
such as the Freshman or Senior class,
class clubs, which require that members
be enrolled in a particular class (Ex.
Marketing students can become
members of DECA) and clubs by
induction, audition, application or
election., such as the National Honor
Society, Dance Team, or Student
Council Association (SCA).
Clubs and Activities: There’s A Place for You!
To meet people and develop
new skills
To expand your résumé
Research shows participating in
extra-curricular activities can
improve academic
performance.
Colleges and scholarship
committees value participation
in clubs and activities.
Community Service Projects:
Future Business Leaders of America
donated $200 to the Peninsula Rescue
Mission for food, also donated canned
goods (in conjunction with FCCLA,
DECA, TSA, and NJROTC) and
toiletries to benefit the homeless
population.
For a list of clubs and organizations at
Warwick High School, visit
http://warwick.nn.k12.va.us/clubs.html
Math Honor Society sold glow in the dark necklaces to fans at
Homecoming and pizza during exams to raise funds for the St.
Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
Twenty-three NJROTC cadets volunteered their time on
Thanksgiving morning to serve as Toys for Tots 10K run road
marshals. The cadets accepted donations of toys and $350 in
cash which was given to the Toys for Tots program during the
month of December. Cadets, also, performed weekly Adopt
Our School service and used trash grabbers to pick trash around
school grounds.
Teachers for Tomorrow:
If you are interested in learning more about becoming a Teacher, consider enrolling in Teachers for
Tomorrow. This class prepares students for the field of education including creating lesson plans, designing
interactive activities, and participating in field experiences. For more information, please see Ms. Grant in
Room 102.
National Honor Society Coffee House
The National Honor Society (NHS) is having a Coffee House on Wednesday, March 28th
from 6:00 PM to 9PM in the cafeteria. Proceeds will benefit SOLES 4 SOULS, a non-profit
organization that donates shoes to adults and children in need.
