PERFORMANCE POET
On Friday 27th November, the English Department
arranged for B.R.E.I.S, a rapper/Performance Poet to come
in to English lessons and work with some of the boys. Here’s
what they thought:
B.R.E.I.S stands for Brothers Reaching Each Inner Soul.
When B.R.E.I.S came in he opened up our minds to hip hop
music. He told us in a rap they are using the same language
as used in English Literature. He also told us about word
play and used a specific line as an example: ‘I moved in to
an apartment until I realised what apart meant’.
People in my year know me because I have my own raps &
bars. B.R.E.I.S was really interesting and he amazed me. I
think B.R.E.I.S is a great rapper. The reason why is because
common rappers like Future, Drake and Meek Mill all talk
about money, girls and cars. There are very few rappers
who talk about life and their stories.
Some of the rappers these days are killing hip hop, but one
thing I realised is that bad and clichéd rappers get famous
and really good ones get ignored. B.R.E.I.S was funny; one
line that stood out for me is: ‘nuff beating on my bum,
consider really troublesome’.

MONSTER MODELS
In Performing Arts, Year 7 students were asked to create
their own 3D models of monsters for homework. The photo
shows some of the best models the boys created. It was part
of work this term on the portrayal of monsters in drama.
BBC SCHOOL REPORT
Students from Ernest Bevin are again taking part in
BBC Schools News report this year. On Wednesday 9th
December Kleon Minja 7RCS read a specially prepared
news bulletin over the tannoy during Reading Period. The
report contained items about Hover boards and included a
weather bulletin. If you are interested in finding out more,
please speak to Mr Taylor, the Media Studies teacher.
FILM CLUB
Mr Shoubber and Mr Razaq took students who have been
coming to Film Club this term to the cinema to watch
Spectre, the latest James Bond movie, and here’s what a
couple of the students thought of 007’s latest adventure:
I think Spectre was a really good movie with so much
explosive action in the film. The actors were dedicated to
their character. I thought Daniel Craig, who played the
most important role of the film – the main character, James
Bond, played him really well. But it is really sad because
Daniel has said this will be his last James Bond movie, but
hopefully it’s not! by Joshua Gomes 8EG
I think Spectre was a great movie,
when we were watching the film
I saw an exploding building with
some animals in it like a white
cat. I felt really sad but grateful
as well, it’s a shame that it’s
Daniel Craig’s last film as James
Bond.

SOCIAL MOBILITY FUND
Year 12 students attended a presentation about the
Social Mobility Foundation which aims to help high
achieving students from a low income background. It
offers mentoring, help with UCAS applications, work
experience and skill sessions to students who have
five or more A*/A grades at GCSE. The deadline for
applications is Monday 21st December at 9am and
those eligible are encouraged to apply via the website.

ANTI-BULLYING COMPETITION
We had a record number of entries to the Anti-Bullying
Week competition, where students were asked to submit a
story, poem or rap along the lines of this year’s theme: Let’s
make a noise about bullying. Well done to Alex Atangba 7KH
and C.strong Nwachukwu 8DD, who were chosen as winners
and will be presented with their prize during assembly. The
winning entries are below and these and others will be on
display on the Anti-Bullying noticeboard.
‘Sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt’,
And so they assert.
I feel weak and manipulated by words,
Not telling anyone, it’s absurd.
Thrown into the heart of desolation and fear,
To benevolence, bullies fail to adhere.
Slowly perishing in the persecuting frost,
Alone- deserted –all joy I lost.
Distinctly, I knew there was a way out,
A way that was simple and not beyond doubt,
The correct person had to know,
And spite had its overthrow.
My patience was narrow- as thin as a crescent;
When I reported it was oh so pleasant.
I converted rage to a tamed friend,
I am content – in joy I ascend.

Snitch!
Peter Lewis walked across the playground, deliberately
avoiding the eyes of the other students. He looked forward,
and broke into a cold sweat. There was a group of thug-like
boys huddling over something. He bit his lip and strode past
them.
“Hey!” he whipped around. The tallest, most callous-looking
boy towered over him.
“M-me?” he asked uneasily.
“Yes, you; who else would have that ugly face?”
Peter gazed at the ground, his cheeks burning vigorously.
“Look at me when I’m talking to you, boy.”
Peter looked at him and suddenly wished he hadn’t. The
boy’s face was set in an intimidating frown. His hair was
jagged and spikey. His eyes were brown and he had a small
snubbed nose. His mouth was twisted in an evil-looking grin,
showing a row of perfectly white teeth. He had a gleaming
earring pierced into his ear-lobe.
“Hello,” Peter whispered. The boys threw back his head and
hooted. Peter stepped backwards with a nervous smile on
his terrified face.
“Shut up!” the bully shouted. “And now I’m gonna kill you.”
The bully rolled his sleeves and swung his fist at Peter’s face.
On the other side of the playground, a boy watched Peter
getting punched in the face, then crying and flailing his
arms around. He wondered what to do: tell the teacher and
be branded a ‘snitch’ for the rest of the year, or just pretend
he never saw this incident.
Fortunately, the boy told the teacher and the mean bully was
excluded for his horrible actions. Even better, he reported it
anonymously, so no one knew it was him.

YEAR 12 PRODUCT DESIGN
Year 12 Product Design group visited Aston University for
an introduction to Product Design and life at university.
Students met with the lecturers and took part in design
workshops and were able to check out all the latest
machinery on offer at the university. Students also had the
opportunity to see the campus and all its facilities including
a highly kitted gym, the brand new library, and the onsite
accommodation.
The group had a chance to explore Birmingham including
the Bull Ring shopping centre and German Market. A few
of the boys are now set to apply to the university to do a
degree in Product Design. The group will meet with the
University again at New Designers in London next year, and
also show their support with the Shell eco-marathon in July
2016.

YST TALENT CAMP
Three volleyball players have been selected to attend the
Youth Sports Trust Talent Camp which takes place during
the Christmas holiday. Arran Simon 13EW & Tino Masanga
13JMO have been selected as coaches and Vinojh Kalaiselvan
11CP as a referee. National Talent Camp is a unique four
day residential experience which brings together 350 of the
most talented young athletes, coaches and officials from
across England. Throughout the camp, young people are
actively encouraged to dream and be ambitious on where
their talent can take them, develop a holistic view of their
own performance and understand how they will deliver
when they are back in the environment of their own sport.
LINKED IN VISIT
A group of six Year 12 students spent an afternoon at the
Head offices of LinkedIn, the online professional network
company. They were shown how to upload a professional
profile and use LinkedIn to research universities and careers
they are interested in. If other Sixth Form students are
interested in creating a LinkedIn profile they are reminded
to keep an eye on their privacy settings until they get to the
point of job hunting. The visit was arranged through Future
First the organisation that manages our alumni or ‘Old Boys’
network
VIDEOBLOGG INTERN
Congratulations to Rubel Shafiquz Zaman 13JT who has
been successful in his application for an internship at a
video company based in Streatham. He will work for them
alongside his A Levels which will be fantastic experience
and great for his CV.
The company is called Videoblogg and contacted the college
looking for young people in the area who are interested in
a career in journalism, video or similar. They are a relatively
new business that creates online journalistic content. Rubel
was interested from the off and impressed the company at
interview to get this opportunity. We look forward to seeing
some of his content on the Videoblogg website in the near
future.

TABLE TENNIS
The first Ernest Bevin Greenhouse Ranking tournament
of the year took place on Saturday 28th November. There
were fifteen boys from Bevin and one from a primary school
competing in this tournament, which is mainly aimed at
Year 7 pupils.
Throughout the whole tournament Kamal Annich 7KH played
outstandingly well and he showed great sportsmanship. He
definitely is a talented player and is deservedly the new
champion of the EB Ranking. Jeremiah Forson Prempeh
7RCS also played very well and just missed out on gaining
a place in the final to finish third. Thomas Shatimehin 7ML
and Benjamin Boutrolle 7KH finished fourth and fifth places
respectively.
I hope to see more Year 7 pupils participate in our next
EB Ranking tournament, which will be on Saturday, 16th
January 2016.

ALUMNI TALKS
As part of the Sixth Form Wednesday afternoon enrichment
programme a series of former students from Ernest Bevin
have been coming in to talk to current students about their
time at school here and their careers since leaving.
We are very grateful to the following alumni who have
come in this term to share their experiences: Ahmed
Omar, Pharmacist; Oye Folaranmi, Barrister; Mao Ali - Vice
President & Regulatory, Risk & Control Specialist of the
Deutsche Bank; and photographed with sixth formers are
Michael Bailey – DJ (centre left) and Azhar Saleem - GP and
Clinical Respiratory Lead (centre right).
The programme will continue after the Christmas break,
please look out for details in the Sixth Form centre or see
Ms Banks (Sixth Form Study Manager) for more information.
JUDO
The British Judo Cadet & Pre Cadet Championships was
held on the 5th & 6th December at the English Institute of
Sport, Sheffield. For many in the Ernest Bevin Squad this
was their first NGB national champs or their first event in
the new cadet age band, either way this event represented
a significant challenge and a step up in the competition
level from previous events.
This being said all members of the team acquitted themselves
well in this highly competitive environment. Lukas
Matlasaitis 11HS, Omar Amaidia 9YC and Nadir Dafallah
10MJH won several matches against opponents who were
older and held higher belt grades than themselves. In the
end they fell just short of the medal placings but these
results should give them motivation for future events.
The performance highlight of our weekend undoubtedly
came from Mohammed Dafallah 11EJ. Mohammed fighting
in his first national champs
at the weight class of under
42kgs, managed to win three
contests to make the final
where he faced William Booth
from Wymondham Judo Club.
Mohammed lost his final match
to finish with a thoroughly welldeserved national silver medal.
This result gains Mohammed
selection to the British team
where he will attend national
squad training and hopefully
represent GB in future.

YEAR 7 FOOTBALL ROUND UP
Our Year 7 boys started their season with a 7-a-side
tournament at Southfields Academy in October. We entered
two teams who both competed very well in all our games.
The A team finished runners up and our B team finished
4th. The Bevin Man of the Tournament was our captain Jack
Pollintine-Smith 7CFD, who showed real leadership and
determination in every game. Our top scorer on the day
was Adriel Deniran 7RCS with 5 goals.
The boys were hoping to follow up from their impressive
first outing, by trying to gain 3 points in their first league
game against Raynes Park at home on 16th November. They
started off really well, playing some very good football and
were unlucky numerous times. Their hard work eventually
paid off as Thomas Shatimehin 7ML got onto a long ball
over the top, as he cleverly finished in style. The boys ended
the first half with another missed opportunity but were still
leading 1-0. The second half was always going to be tough,
with an already strong breeze; the weather stared to play a
big part. The boys conceded two quick goals from set pieces
and the game unfortunately finished 4-1 to Raynes Park.
After a disappointing loss, the boys were determined to turn
things around when they faced Rutlish on 30th November.
Training twice a week and seeing 15 boys at 7:30 am training
sessions proved that they were willing to do just that. The
boys were on fire from the start, moving the ball around
very quickly and creating chance after chance.
Thomas got a well taken goal 4 mins in and then linked well
with Jesus Cardona 7CFD who traded a further two goals.
Even Alpha Bah 7ML came off the bench to get in on the
act. The boys did concede 3 goals from individual errors;
however it was a fantastic performance proving that the
hard work at training is paying off. Man of the match was
Jeremiah Forson-Prempeh 7RCS who defended like a lion.
Also outstanding on the day were Jack, Jesus and ‘hatrick
hero’ Thomas.
We have a friendly match against Southfields in the last
week before the Christmas break and Leagues fixtures
resume again in January. Keep up the training boys!
Mr Moriarty
VOLLEYBALL U18s NATIONALS
The U18 Academy Volleyball team once again made it the
last 8 of the National Volleyball Cup this year. Traditionally
this is a very tough competition as the face strong club rather
than school teams, some of whom include international
players from abroad.
Of the 11 players in our squad, the majority are our own
Sixth Formers (who took the Team of the Year prize and
the College Sports Awards earlier in the term) and so to
make it to the final of the best 8 teams in the country is a
great achievement in itself. Once again the boys acquitted
themselves well and came away with the Bronze medal as
they did last year, losing out to longstanding rivals Wessex
and Bosworth.
The U16s face their Last 8 competition in March at Kettering
and the U15s in May in Loughborough. We wish them well
in their preparations. Good luck also to those attending
National Camps for selection to represent England in the
European Championships in January.
Mr Trodden
TAEKWONDO
Amrou
Greenidge
10TP
travelled to Stuttgart in
Germany to take part in
the 30th International Park
Taekwondo Cup and took
Gold Medal in the U37kg boys
competition. Amrou, who
took up Taekwondo seven
years ago, trains with the
Fusion Taekwondo Club in
Peckham. In January Amrou
will move up to the Junior age
group competitions.
YEAR 8 FOOTBALL
The Year 8 football team kicked off the week with an
away friendly fixture against Southfields on Monday 7th
December. The game was close with EBC just missing out
on a win and having to settle for a 3-3 draw in the last few
minutes. Josiah Amponsah 8SH had a great game scoring a
hat trick and Hassan Chaudhry 8TM saving the day with a
phenomenal right hand save to keep us in the game.
On Tuesday 8th December the Year 8s played a cup fixture
against Norwood in Dulwich Sports Fields. The Purple Ties
brought out some magic annihilating the home team 9-1.
Goal scorers included George Clarke 8EG x3, Asif Hazari
8DD x1, Josiah x1, Kheiredine Guemmane 8SGH x2, Reece
Adams 8JDB x1 and Tevin Bassey 8JDB x1. Man of match
was George. Other notable performances include Sanje
Rameesh 8SH known as ‘the Wall’ due to the inability of
strikers to get passed him, and Reshae Abbey 8TM who had
an outstanding performance with great ability to use his
strength to hold the ball. Well done boys, now is time to
prepare for next round.
