RUGS
The people of Karastan make our rugs exceptional. In the 1920s, we
began with the dream of producing machine-made oriental rugs
that recreate the detailed craftsmanship of imported hand-woven
rugs. The development of the Axminster loom, which is still in use
today, allowed the creation of machine-made rugs that were nearly
impossible to distinguish from handmade. But rug manufacturing
requires the hands-on skills and artistry of rug craftsmen, too. Our
team of rug makers ensures our standards of both beauty and
quality. Some of our craftsmen have been a part of the Karastan
family for decades. Throughout this catalog, we’ll introduce you to
a few of the faces of Karastan, the people who embody the spirit
of the Karastan legacy. They’re the individuals who have made the
Karastan name synonymous with quality, beauty and durability.

U.S.A. of premium, fully worsted 100%
New Zealand wool and represent the
standard of excellence in wool rugs.
The colors used in the creation of this
collection have been individually skein
dyed, Axminster woven, and finished
with Karastan’s patented Lustre-Wash
to create, as closely as possible, the
look and feel of the magnificent
hand-knotted rugs that inspired them.

Our Antique Legends Collection is a breathtaking
collection of distinctive rugs with an “Old World”
flavor. Styling is based on legendary antique carpet
designs with a fresh colorful interpretation - perfect
for today’s eclectic interiors. After weaving, these
rugs are given a special antique wash that further
harmonizes the colors with a rich “vintage” patina.

Valerie began her Karastan career over six decades ago
as a handcarver in the 1950s. She moved to winding,
back to handcarving, and later to handseaming, where
she still works today. Valerie takes great pride in her
work, and loves what she does. “I love seaming rugs
and turning that rug over and seeing the results. If they
didn’t have the money to pay me, I’d still come in and
work! Not much has changed about the way Karastan
makes rugs. They’re still the most beautiful rugs made—
quality counts! Our quality has not wavered.” When
asked what makes Karastan a special place to work,
Valerie says, “It’s all about the people.” She enjoys her
coworkers and has special memories of meeting with
customers throughout the years.
One memory that brought a laugh was Valerie’s
recollection of a 38' x 58' handseamed rug that was
made for a private club in Florida. The customer called
Karastan to see if it was okay to cut holes in the rug for
their telephone lines! With hand-finished details and
such quality craftsmanship, why would anyone even
dream of cutting holes in a Karastan?

Since 1980, Linda has been running a Belmont winder
in Karastan’s skein winding department, starting with
12 positions and adding more as her experience grew.
Today, she runs 30 positions on the winder. Linda says,
“I enjoy working with friendly people. At Karastan, we
work as a team to produce good rugs and to get the
job done. They’re made by local people in the USA,
and they’re quality rugs”. Through the years, Linda says,
“some processes have changed from hand to machine,
but the product we make is still the same quality, and
carries the same name—Karastan.” One of Linda’s
favorite memories from her time at Karastan was her
anniversary dinner, honoring her 25 years of service.
Linda treasured the time to reunite with old colleagues
and even meet a few new faces from before her time at
Karastan too.

Our Shapura Collection has a quiet beauty that

In over three decades at Karastan, Larry has worked
all the various jobs in the dye house, beginning as a
skein hanger. He says, “The people I work with and the
product we make” are what makes Karastan a special
place to work. “The quality of the work that goes into
making our rugs” is what makes Karastan rugs legendary.
Today’s processes are more computer-assisted than
when Larry began, but the same careful craftsmanship
and hands-on attention goes into every rug that bears
the Karastan name.

Starting out in Karastan’s mending department (which
was then called “burling”), and she says that was her
favorite role in the rug process. Later, Deborah became
a grader, and now is an autoset operator. Deborah says,
“The people make this mill. The employees have a
family bond. If it was not for the people, I would not have
stayed here 42 years!” Deborah says that the concept
behind making Karastan rugs is basically the same as
it was when she started. “Our rugs are made with the
best quality and the employees take pride in their work.
The biggest change is in setting, which changed from
the conventional way to the computerized way.”

Harold started as a floor hand at Karastan when he was
a young man, and moved to the threading department,
where he works today. He says that “seeing how we
make rugs and carpet from scratch, right from the start
to the end” makes Karastan a special place to work. “The
quality and pride we put in our work makes our rugs
the best all around.” During his four decades with the
company, Harold says that he’s seen new machinery,
new ideas, many new colors and new patterns.
Throughout the years, Karastan’s legendary quality has
been the consistent thread that runs through every rug.
Harold enjoys working with his Karastan coworkers, and
he takes great pride in “knowing that I had a part in
making the best rug you can buy.”

After completing his service in the U.S. Army, Danny
came to work in the Weave Room at Karastan. Today,
he works on the famed Axminster looms, which
produce some of Karastan’s most luxurious rugs. Danny
appreciates the workmanship and quality that he and
his coworkers put into every Karastan rug. After four
decades with the company, Danny says, “The people
who work here have been together for years!” and he
says the quality and history are what make Karastan
rugs special. Danny has fond memories of working on
many unique rugs, including a 1976 Bicentennial rug,
basset hound rugs for Hush Puppies shoe stores, and
rugs made for Elvis Presley, Donald Trump and even the
Pope!

Through the years, Eddie has seen a lot of the rug
business, beginning his career at Karastan as a
warehouse man, then progressing to become a carpet
wrapper, rug splitter, order filler, shipper/receiver and,
today, a crew leader. Eddie says that Karastan’s a
special place to work because of “the workmanship that
goes into making this product and the people who work
here.” Regarding the advancements made in technology,
he recalls how “The washing process has changed a
lot. We used to make our own washing solution with
lime and chlorine; now it’s done automatically. Rugs
would stay in the dryer for 12 and 16 hours, and now
it only takes 10-15 minutes. We always produce a great
product.” Looking back at his four decades at Karastan,
Eddie fondly remembers “The people here, through the
years, have been good to work with. I’ve seen a lot of
changes made.”

Karastan offers continuous-roll runners that can
be custom sized to virtually any length. Our handseaming workshop is staffed with artisans who are
specially trained to provide this service.
Runners that we custom size are for use in long
hallways or on staircases, and are available in any
length. They are custom cut to your size and can
be bound at the ends (called “serging”), fringed,
mitered or end capped.
These custom features are available on some of
our top-selling designs from the Original Karastan,
Antique Legends, Ashara, Knightsen, Bellingham
and English Manor Collections.
Consultation and quotes on custom work are
