caused more than a few logistical challenges for the banquet
pg. 4 committee that was headed this year by Mrs. Trudy Barber,
Mrs. Brenda Rust and Mrs. Chris Flora.
More food, more volunteers, more programs, more chairs – everything
expanded as the attendance grew to the point that the event sold out even before
spring break. Barber, Rust and Flora, along with 160 other volunteers (including
95 students) rose to the challenge and created an evening to remember.
The banquet featured a 100-voice alumni choir, the art of master artist Loren Entz
(class of 1967) and highlighted the milestone years of employees including Mr. Terry
Tilson, superintendent, who was honored for his 40 years of service to Berean. In addition,
guests heard from Dr. Del Tackett, author of The Truth Project, about how Christian schools help
children truly flourish as God intended. At the end of the evening, the crowd was asked to support Berean
and gave generously – with gifts and pledges totaling $153,180. “This event has become so much more than
a fundraiser,” said David Landis, assistant superintendent. “It connects people back to Berean in a way that
makes 800 people feel like they belong together as a family.”

40 Years of Service
On February 8, Lewis Wiebe
achieved something that only a
handful of basketball coaches ever
attain--namely, 500 varsity wins.
By beating the Hutchinson Trinity
Celtics, 44-31, the Warriors gave
Coach Wiebe the milestone victory
in his 27th year of coaching. Wiebe’s
path to 500 began with a short stint
at Hutchinson Central Christian
School, an eight-year tenure at
Oklahoma Bible Academy in Enid,
and now 19 years as head coach
Wiebe Wins 500th
at Berean. Everywhere he’s been,
success has followed. Wiebe has
taken five varsity basketball teams
to state, once placing third, twice
placing second and twice taking the
state championship in both 2010
and 2011. “Lewis is an outstanding
coach and an outstanding Christian
example to our boys,” said high
school principal and athletic director
Galen Unruh. “More important than
his many wins are the many lives he
has impacted.”
Prayer Warriors Needed
Cancer is something that has touched each one of us, whether
personally, with a family member or a dear friend. This year, the Berean
family has been challenged to pray as never before. Jesus taught that we
“…should always pray and not give up” (Luke 18:1). We ask you to join us
as we pray for these dear friends that are part of the Berean family as they
battle against different forms of cancer:

From the Superintendent’s Desk
Dear Friends,
As most of you
know by now, our
beloved friend and
colleague, Luella
Zuercher, has been ushered into
glory. It was our privilege and honor
to host her funeral at Berean. Below
is a brief summary of what I shared
at the funeral.
Mrs. Zuercher spent thirtyeight years of influential ministry,
touching the lives of students at
Berean. Outside of her family,
Berean became her life’s joy and
ministry. To most of her students she
became their “favorite” teacher, even
though she demanded much and
did not accept late papers. In fact,
over the course of time, she became
respectfully and affectionately
known as Grandma Z. What a
fitting title, as she was always
gracious, kind, loving, encouraging,
and expected the best because she
believed in each student just like a
grandma would.
While it is true that many
groaned about her English classes as
students, most came back praising
by Brianna Kurtz
and thanking her for preparing them
so well for college. She was tough,
but fair. Mrs. Z was highly revered
among our staff as well. She was
considered the matriarchal figure for
the staff as well as the students of
Berean Academy.
Her love for God was seen
in her sense of joy, contentment, and
trust in the Lord. I believe that God
revealed himself to others through
her positive outlook on life and
her love for others. She was also a
great prayer warrior – offering many
prayers on the streets of Elbing as
she walked.
Mrs. Z was not perfect,
but she was godly. She “feared the
Lord,” as seen in her reverence for
God expressed in submission to His
will. She lived her life faithfully
for the Lord. “Watch God work,”
was one of her favorite sayings. A
great description of her faithfulness
is found in a quote by Jerry Bridges
which says, “Faithfulness entails
absolute honesty, utter dependability,
and unswerving loyalty.”
If Mrs. Z were here today,
she would tell you that the only
thing in life that really matters is
relationship--with God first and
relationship with others. She would
also tell you that the key to building
relationships is humility. Randy
Alcorn said, “Who you become will
be the cumulative result of the daily
choices you make.” I believe that
she understood this and chose to
make her relationship with the Lord
a priority each day.
Our loss is Heaven’s gain.
Please continue to pray for the
Zuercher family.

In August, due to a schedule
change, the administration had made
the hard decision to cut elementary
art from the program for a year.
While many bemoaned the loss of the
important
program,
two moms of
elementaryaged
students, Sara
Meisinger
and Beth
Smith
decided to do
something
about it. Beth,
a speech and
language
teacher at Berean and Sara, a graduate
of the class of 1989, both had personal
connections to the school and took it
upon themselves not only to keep the
program going, but to turn it into a
showcase for the school. By studying
several different types of art and artists,
the elementary students have turned
once stark walls into a Berean art
gallery. “Beth and Sara have done such
an incredible job teaching art this year,”
said David Landis, principal. “They
have worked with Anne (Morrow)
to give our school a great K-12 art
experience.” A recent anonymous gift
of $4,000 to the elementary art program
has provided not only encouragement,
but the needed resources to fuel even
more creativity. The recent Praise
and Celebration banquet showcased
elementary student’s work and
provided ample evidence of the quality
of our young artists.
