This is an exciting time to be in the field
of development at Indiana University.
The university has just concluded its
very successful Matching the Promise
campaign and is well positioned to
focus on the future.
I am very pleased to introduce you to
fellow members of the Jacobs School of
Music’s new development team:

This staff of dedicated individuals will
allow us to think and act more broadly
with respect to our constituents.
How can we more deeply engage donors
and expand the reach of the Jacobs
School of Music? In what ways will we
connect with our constituency so that
we may share our story and case for
support? Together with my colleagues,
I am eager to provide answers to these
questions and to develop a fundraising
program that not only expands our
current trends but also broadens our
reach through enhanced methods of
communication such as social media.
I am sincerely grateful to our IU
Foundation colleagues Gene Tempel,
Marti Heil, Eileen Savage, John Keith,
and Brian Yeley for their constant
support and willingness to share their
wisdom and knowledge with us. Our
combined efforts will allow us to further
the cause of the arts in society.
There are many individuals on whose
shoulders we stand and whose thoughtfulness and generosity help to make this
school all that it is today. Their investment
puts opportunity within reach of so
many at the Jacobs School.
Every day I am reminded of the words
of Ralph Waldo Emerson, who said, “To
know that even one life has breathed
easier because you have lived—that is to
have succeeded.” We are grateful to the
friends of the Jacobs School for all they
make possible, and we look forward to
what we will achieve together.

The Promise of the Future

In 2003, Indiana University
launched its Matching the Promise
campaign. The campaign was
designed to give donors a chance
to double the value of their gifts by
providing a one-to-one match on a
donor’s investment in IU. The goal
of the campaign was to provide
scholarships and fellowships to help
keep IU affordable and attractive to
top-notch students, provide funding
for faculty chairs to attract and
retain leading academic talent, and
construct high-quality teaching and
research facilities.
At its conclusion in 2010, the
Matching the Promise campaign for
IU Bloomington exceeded its revised
goal of $1.1 billion—making it the
most successful campaign in IU
history. Regardless of the economic
downturn, donors like you supported
scholarships, faculty appointments,
and enhanced university facilities.
As a result of this campaign,
average out-of-pocket expenses
for in-state students declined by
12%. A total of $36.7 million was
raised to support faculty chairs and
professorships. Furthermore, the
campaign energized 188,025 cherished
supporters of Indiana University.
During this campaign, the Jacobs
School of Music was fortunate to receive a
naming gift of $40.6 million from Barbara
and David H. Jacobs, which provided
for endowed faculty positions as well as
student scholarships and fellowships.
Additionally, the Jacobs School
received $44 million from the Lilly
Endowment to construct a new faculty
studio building. This new facility will
provide technologically and acoustically
MARVIN CARMACK, 96
Marvin Carmack, a longstanding friend
of the Jacobs School, passed away
on July 6, 2010, in Bloomington, Ind.
An only child, he was born in 1913, in
Vermillion County, Ind. In 1960, Carmack married Joan Margaret Scully of
Western Springs, Ill.
Carmack completed his A.B. Honors
degree at the University of Illinois with
a major in Organic Chemistry in 1937.
He completed the requirements for
the Master of Science in 1939 and the

superior teaching and practice facilities
to rival those of any music school or
conservatory in the world.
In the end, when a donor makes a gift
to an organization, it’s about more than
nostalgia or loyalty or pride. It’s an act of
imagination: a transformative investment
in today’s school that forecasts tomorrow’s
promise—bringing us closer to the
realization of our potential.
Ph.D. in 1940. Carmack returned to the
University of Illinois in 1940-41 for postdoctoral research. In the fall of 1941,
Carmack joined the faculty of chemistry
at the University of Pennsylvania in
Philadelphia. In addition to teaching
organic chemistry, he was the official
investigator for three years during World
War II. In 1958, he began his tenure at
Indiana University, where he remained
for the rest of his career, retiring in 1983.
The Jacobs School of Music wishes to recognize those individuals, corporations, and foundations who have
made contributions to the school between Jan. 1, 2010, and Dec. 31, 2010. Those listed here are
among the Jacobs School’s most dedicated and involved benefactors, and it is their outstanding generosity
that enables the IU Jacobs School of Music to continue to be the finest institution of its kind in the nation.
