St. Vincent-St. Mary High School Presents
Our 29th Annual Showcase Fundraiser
April 18, 2015
Page 2
Good evening and welcome to Showcase 29, SHINING STARS.
Each year, the St. Vincent-St. Mary family comes together to celebrate our
students and our broader community of parents, alumni and supporters.
This year, we focus especially on our Irish “Shining Stars” – our students
and their impressive achievements in academics, athletics, and community
leadership. They are daily proof that investment in Catholic education at
St. Vincent-St. Mary High School is money well-spent.
In addition, we recognize the remarkable Walter Family – all 81 of them!
St. Vincent-St. Mary and the broader Akron community have been the
beneficiaries of their academic, financial and leadership contributions –
as students, parents, grandparents, and members of the St. Vincent-St. Mary
community for eight decades.
Tonight, you can see the result of a year-long collaborative effort of the
Showcase Committee, Director of Advancement Ellen Zegarra, and our two
chair couples Candi and Joe Weber and Jeanne and Anthony Locastro, and
dozens of volunteers. I sincerely thank them for their hard work and creativity.
Finally, thanks to you, our guests, for your generosity and continued support of
St. Vincent-St. Mary High School. Please enjoy this special evening which will
benefit our “Shining Stars” – our students.
Sincerely,
Thomas M. Carone
President

Dear Friends of St. Vincent-St.Mary High School,
It is my pleasure to welcome you to our annual Showcase celebration for 2015,
for the benefit of St. Vincent-St.Mary High School. I am delighted that you
are joining us as we recognize a special group of honorees whose continued
dedication to Catholic education have touched so many lives.
We gather together to celebrate the positive influences St. Vincent-St,Mary High
School continues to have on our own lives and the families and communities
we help build, each in our own unique way, using the values and lessons
learned at our school.
Each of you makes a difference. When I became Principal less than one year
ago, I heard much about the traditions and spirit and excellence of STVM. Our
“Shining Stars” students, staff, parents, alumni and friends in the community
work hard everyday to keep our school a beacon of academia and Christian
service. Their generosity, caring and financial support have allowed us to
continue our initiatives to benefit our students. The seeds of your efforts have
resulted in increased enrollment and enhanced programs for our college bound
students.
We are most grateful for your support of this event. Let us move forward,
together, expecting our efforts will bear fruit as we continue to provide students
with faith-based education while simultaneously fulfilling the mission of
Catholic education for generations to come.
Yours in Christ,
Sandra Wilkes

St. Vincent-St. Mary is proud to
announce the 2015 Showcase Honoree as
The Legacy of The Walter Family.
The Walter Family Legacy at St. Vincent-St. Mary began in the late 1920’s with Margaret A. and Leo
G. Walter, Sr. and their commitment to Catholic Education. Back in the day, which is also common in
today’s world, Mr. and Mrs. Walter sacrificed and made catholic education a priority.
This priority and commitment to catholic education is evidenced by the fact that each and every one
of Mr. and Mrs. Walter’s ten children attended St. Vincent or St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.
It is not hard to imagine and could be pretty easily verified that nearly every graduate of St. Vincent
and St. Vincent-St. Mary High School can say that he or she went to school with at least one member
of the Walter Family. Through the generations, this family has reflected the Christian faith and values
that have been passed down from Leo and Margaret Walter.
At St. Vincent and St. Vincent-St. Mary, young Walter men and women have excelled in athletics, and
extracurricular activities, at academics in the classroom, at service as peer ministers and tutors, and in
practicing their faith in retreats and as Eucharistic Ministers.
The extra curriculars and superlatives included in so many of our yearbooks through the years offer
only a scant view into the Walter Family members. They have been described as …Friendliest…
Most Humble… Big of Heart…Best Sense of Humor… Full of Cheers…Full of Fun…Would do
Anything for Anyone … to just mention a few.
They have been active, contributing members of the student body, participating in countless programs and clubs.
The Walter Family students did not merely come as students and leave at the end of the school day; they were
fully immersed in the high school experience and maximized every opportunity as students.
This concept of involvement is just one of many that has been passed on to the generations that
followed. Even today, when you look at the STVM student government, athletic teams, service
groups and enrichment programs, and peer leadership, the rosters include descendants of the Walter
Family. Through their example, they have taught, and continue to teach the values of leadership and
responsibility to your family, friends and community.
As students and as adults, the Walter Family members, through every generation, share the traits
of being forward-thinking, hardworking, energetic, devoted to their faith, and they express a clear
passion for the entire St. Vincent-St. Mary Community.
When Walter Family members left their high school days behind….they retained the values that
energized each generation of this remarkable family. Their influence has spread through many college
campuses, and into the broader Akron Community and beyond. Many have made their mark in
business and industry, banks, and corporations, in the military, and in government service and have
been recognized with professional awards. For more than 70 years, the Family has owned small
businesses in Akron, further contributing to the entire community. The most valuable contributions,
however, has been the Walter Family unit – a reflection of so much love and dedication.
For us at St. Vincent-St. Mary, we are fortunate that so many Walter Family members have returned
to their alma mater to touch the lives of not only their own children, but hundreds of others, through
coaching, mentoring, and providing scholarships – all of which help to ensure the continued quality
of Catholic Education.
Leo G. Walter, Sr. and Margaret Walter clearly instilled the Christian values and strong faith that are
sustained today. Christian principles learned early in life and exemplified in their careers,
their friendships, and their service to their school, their community and their country.
As alumni and current parents of STVM students, they hosted not only international exchange
students for many of the academic school years but also hosted neighborhood kids for ball games in
the back yard. Many of these family members have received Fr. Mahar and Irish Crusader Awards; they
have chaired Showcase; and they have held Board Positions at STVM. Members of the Walter Family
have been instrumental in the success of capital campaigns for STVM and a myriad of fundraising efforts
including major supporters of capital projects, including the Cosgrove Center. They have helped to
establish and, yes, strengthen Planned Giving programs at STVM.

Page 11
2015 Showcase Honoree Continued
One family member even renovated the kitchen staff room at STVM – showing the Family’s
appreciation for the staff and the desire for them to have a space to gather and enjoy.
While this legacy started with Leo and Margaret Walter, many will recognize their descendants and
their contributions to our community by the names: Bollinger, Carlos, Healy, Humston, Logsdon,
Maligie, May, Messmore, Moats, Morgan, Riccardi, and Simmons. The Walter Family’s myriad
contributions as students, parents and grandparents to academic, leadership, philanthropic, and
volunteer spheres are legion. The St. Vincent-St. Mary High School Community has been especially
blessed with their generosity, leadership, sense of humor, and philanthropic and moral support.
Four generations and 81 members of the Walter Family have graduated from this school and the future looks
bright with many more descendants of the Walter Family looking to attend STVM in the years to come.
The Family’s legacy and support have played an integral part of the school’s history and is essential
to the STVM of today and as we look to our future.
Simply stated, the World, and certainly the St. Vincent-St. Mary Community, is a better place because
of the Walter Family.
To the Walter Family, thank you! May you all continue to be an inspiration to the entire STVM
Community and realize that your dedication and loyalty is admired and appreciated. May God
continue to bless every one of you.

Masters of Ceremony
Lynn Kelly & Dan Mosher
WQMX, Weekdays 10am-3pm
A veteran broadcaster and no stranger to the airwaves to
Akron listeners. Lynn joined WQMX in 2007 and after
working in many formats, she’s settled into the country
music format nicely.
Born and raised in Akron on North Hill, Lynn feels
fortunate to have grown up with family all around.
Getting started in radio took her out of the area for
several years, but she never left Ohio. Lynn is proud
to have worked for three great radio stations in Akron,
WKDD, 91.3 The Summit and now WQMX, she also handles evenings on
sister station 107.3 The Wave @ Cleveland After Dark.
Lynn makes her home on the West side of Akron, in a beautiful old house with
her husband Ray, son Andrew, two dogs, Boo & Charlie, and kitty Hunter. Her
daughter just graduated college, and is on her own.
Lynn says of her WQMX experience, “I have met some of the most wonderful
people here at WQMX and have been pleased to continue working with
charities like the American Cancer Society and the Alzhiemer’s Association.”
Lynn loves spending the heart of the day on the radio, keeping you company
while you’re at work or at home. She also hosts the daily feature, “The All
Request Country Buffet”. You can contact Lynn when you call the studio line at
330-370-2000, on her Facebook page, or through email [email protected].

What is BidPal Network?
For the first time in Showcase history, we are excited to offer BidPal bidding for Some Kind of
Wonderful. The BidPal hand-held bidding program revolutionizes charitable giving by wirelessly
automating the bidding process and auction end wrap-up.
With BidPal, there are no bar code stickers or paper bid sheets. The auction and audience will be
electrified with instant outbid notices. This is the most user-friendly bidding model in the charitable
event industry. This exciting program aligns STVM’s continued focus to remain aligned with the
continued advancements in science and technology. Bid early and often and have fun with your
new bidding style!
If you experience any challenges with your bidding efforts and intentions, please see an STVM
Student Ambassador or BidPal representative for quick resolution.
