Study Abroad Experience
Salman’s experience at AU
Omar’s semester at AU
“I went to American University Washington DC to study
for one semester as an exchange student. I had a good
time from both perspectives academic and socializing. The
university atmosphere was amazing. The professors were
friendly and always ready to help. Moreover, in terms of
socializing I have met friends from all over the world. We
were having activities every weekend as Washington, DC
has lots of attractive places to visit. We have visited lots of
places in DC such as the White House, the Capital Building,
the monuments, and much more places. In addition to that
I have visited places outside Washington, DC. I have visited
Pennsylvania state and New York state. All in all, my experience was amazing, and I would love t do it again and advise
each student to try it .”
Salman on the right with his friends.
“I do not know where to start. The US thus far has been
a once in a lifetime opportunity. It’s truly amazing to see
how many people are willing to meet and know one
another. No kidding, with all the friends I have made,
together we have travelled to New York, Philadelphia and
around Washington, DC. Who says it takes more than a
semester to get settled in? Don’t be afraid; take this great
opportunity today.”
Omar in the middle with his friends .

Study Abroad Experience
Razan’s Experience at GWU
“I studied abroad at the George Washington University
during the Spring 2010 semester and had the most
wonderful time there! I met so many people from all over
the world- the student body was very diverse. The weather
was COLD, but it was a nice change from the weather
we are used to here in the UAE, and I got to play in the
snow! Living in DC was much more different than living in
Dubai. Nobody drives there- everyone walks and takes the
metro, especially if they are students at GW and living on
campus. The actual campus is different as well. There isn’t
one distinct campus- it’s a bunch of buildings all over DC
that belong to George Washington University. It’s such a
nice atmosphere I am sure anyone who wants to go study
abroad at George Washington University will absolutely
love it! Georgetown is also very close to the George
Washington University campus and it has the best stores
and restaurants in DC- you’ll find anything you want in
Georgetown (it’s somewhat similar to the Walk in JBR, but
much bigger with shops such as Zara, Urban Outfitters,
etc.). While I was abroad, I also made a visit to Orlando,
Florida and visited Disney World. There are many other
states you can travel to that are close to DC such as New
York, which is only four hours away by car. Overall, I had
a wonderful time and I would encourage everyone who
wants to study abroad to do it at George Washington!”

in person to International Student & Scholar Services along
with a copy of your policy in English. Follow instructions
given by the host university.
Basim Ahmed is an AUS student who studied abroad at
James Madison University during Fall 2009 semester.
“I left with the intention of having a good experience and
learning more about other cultures. I came back with all this
and more. I became more open minded and helpful through
this study abroad experience. The environment was great
and the people were friendly and welcoming. James
Madison University is a huge campus with a large and active student body. The school spirit could be seen through
the range of activities offered to the students from parties to dinners to movie nights. The International Students
Association held weeklong orientation for exchange and
new students filled with fun events and icebreakers. Also, I
really liked the courses I was taking as they were diverse and
interesting. During my stay, I lived in an exchange student
housing so I got the opportunity to interact and learn from
other exchange students.”

Study Abroad Experience:
Shahin Hoda is an AUS student who studied abroad at
Louisiana State University during Fall 2009 semester.
“I found my study abroad experience to be an eye opener.
Adjusting to the environment in the US was easy because of
the student activities we had during the orientation and the
welcoming students. There were a lot of student organizations
that you could join with a variety of events offered. The
educational system makes you more independent as you
have to learn to do everything by yourself and complete the
assigned tasks on time. I suggest everyone should go study
abroad for a semester as you learn a lot and become more
open to other cultures.”

Health Insurance:
All students must have health insurance. They can either
purchase insurance from a health care provider in Germany or use insurance from their home country. The cost
of basic monthly coverage (including basic dental) for
students (up to 30 years of age) is around 65 Euro. Follow
instructions given by the host university.
Visa:
Non-EU national have to apply for a student visa so they
must contact the German Embassy. Start obtaining
general information in advance to prevent any issues with
the application. See http://www.abu-dhabi.diplo.de/ for
complete information on Visa application process.

Programs:
MBS allows exchange students three programs for their
study abroad options.
1)European Business Semester (EBS)
This program is taught at an advanced bachelor level
conducted 100% in English. 30 ECTS with TOEFL/IELTS
scores: IBT 83 or IELTS 6.0
2)German Business Semester (GBS)
The GBS is taught at an advanced bachelor level conducted
100% in German. 30 ECTS with fluency in German
3)Integrated Studies at the Bachelor or Master Level
Visiting students may study alongside our bachelor or
master students in the German or English language track.
Students must be academically sound and fluent in the
desired language of study.
MBS also offers a 2-week intensive German language course
for students, with very little or no German language skills,
prior to the start of the academic semester. However, this
course is only available for the fall semester intake.
The International Exchange Office recommends the
Integrated Studies Program for AUS students. More
information on this program can be found in this newsletter.
If you are interested in the other two programs, you can find
more details on this website: http://www.munich-businessschool.de/en/programs/visiting-student-programs.html
Courses:
There are no engineering or architecture courses offered
at MBS. Exchange students usually integrate into the third
year (5th or 6th semester) in the school. The offered English
courses, credits, and hours are viewable on the website
through the following link: http://www.munich-businessschool.de/nc/en/programs/visiting-student-programs/
integrated-semester-abroad/courses.html
NOTE: Students must fill out the AUS course permission
form to get their courses approved by the Associate Dean
of their school and the Registrar. Upon approval, students
would be provided with the grades required to transfer
credits. Students must achieve the minimum grade as indicated on the form in order to receive course credit (requirements for credit transfer vary by program). Each
study abroad case is subject to approval.
Financial Grant:
AUS students on grants/scholarships must obtain approval
from the Office of Financial Grants and Scholarships before
starting a semester abroad at a host university.
In cases where the AUS student pays tuition and or housing fees directly to AUS for study abroad, the student will
continue to use their AUS grants and AUS-funded scholarships for that semester abroad. In all other cases of students studying abroad, financial grants and AUS-funded
scholarships will not be awarded.
These students should speak with the Financial Grants and
Scholarship Manager for more information.
Scholarships opportunities:
AUS and MBS in Germany signed a student exchange
agreement which allows up to 3 students to study one
semester at the respective universities. The scholarship
amount will be €600 per student per semester. A student
who is nominated for a full academic year is eligible to receive two scholarships (one for each semester). The scholarship is open to bachelor and master students
studying at AUS. The objective is to encourage the
exchange of students and financially assist them. Students
apply as exchange students via the Office of International
Exchange Programs. Application deadline for Spring 2014 is
August 1, 2013.
Students sponsored by an organization outside of AUS are
responsible for making arrangements with their sponsor.
Housing/Accommodation:
All accepted exchange students are advised to search for
their accommodation and make arrangements for their
stay in Munich. If the student cannot find a place, then
they should arrange to stay in a youth hostel or inexpensive hostel for the first few weeks till a place is found. Websites of Great Rentals and Toytown Germany contain useful
links for rentals/housing.
Most rental website would have rentals in German. The
rentals may be charged either by the owners or by rental
agents who charge 2 months’ rent plus VAT tax for their
referral services.
RENTAL AGREEMENT, DEPOSIT & PRICES:
Most rental agreements would be written and contain
rental terms such as rental dates and termination policy.
Security deposits for up to two months are required by
landlord; they will be returned after the contract ends.
Rentals would be paid at the end of each month.
Look for housing in Munich City, Munich West and Munich
South.
Rental prices in Munich are high therefore most students
share apartments. Rents vary from location, size and type.
Average cost would be €500 for single room.
Be aware of fraudulent rental links!

Sciences Po
Sciences Po:
The Undergraduate Exchange Programme at Sciences Po
allows exchange students to live and study in a multicultural and dynamic environment. The main campus is
located in Paris but there are five other regional campuses
located in major French cities: Le Havre, Reims, Nancy, Poitiers, Dijon, and Menton. Each location has a distinct geographical focus: the Middle East, Asia, Europe, North and
South America. These campuses offer the same curriculum
as the main Paris campus but offer additional courses
that focus on its geographical region such as intensive
language. These cities have a lower cost of living, better
student services and more affordable housing.
Location: Paris, France
Eligibility:
•Sophomores encouraged to apply; must have at least 60
credits by program start date; seniors may not go in last
semester.
. You cannot go during your graduating semester (last
semester).
. You must have at least a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above.
Deadlines:
For Fall Semester, the application deadline is Januay 15.
For Spring Semester, the application deadline is August 1.
Length of Stay: One or Two semesters
Program Fees and Costs:
As an exchange student, you will pay AUS tuition fees for
the full course load (12-15 credits) in addition to Student
Activities fees. Any additional costs including housing, lab
fees, meal plans, books and insurance will be paid directly
to the host university.
Courses:
Exchange student have up to 16 hours of class per week.
They can choose from 240 different courses and take a full
course load up to 30 ECTS (European Credits Transfer and
Accumulation System).
Exchange students can take courses in various areas including Economics, Business, European Studies, French Studies,
History, International Relations, Law, Political Science, and
Sustainable Development.
It is strongly recommended for all non-francophone students to take a French language course. It is possible to
study a second language, but in this case, students must
take a language previously studied at their home university. Students can pick one sports class per semester that is
worth 2 credits. These courses are taken on a pass/fail basis
and depend on the students’ participation.
The different types of courses include lectures, seminars,
electives, and workshops. For more details on which courses
to select visit http://college.sciences-po.fr/siteparis/coursecatalogue
To obtain the Undergraduate Exchange Programme Certificate, students must follow one of the recommended English, French or English/French Programmes, each consisting
in two full semester course loads (60 ECTS credits total), and
must validate a minimum of 45 ECTS credits overall.
NOTE: Students must fill out the AUS course permission
form to get their courses approved by the Associate Dean
of their school and the Registrar. Upon approval, students
would be provided with the grades required to transfer
credits. Students must achieve the minimum grade as
indicated on the form in order to receive course credit (requirements for credit transfer vary by program). Each study
abroad case is subject to approval.
Housing/Accommodation:
Located in the heart of Paris, Sciences Po does not have
housing on campus to offer its students. As a result, you
must make arrangements to find your own accommodation. Sciences Po has made available numerous housing
offers and information to help guide you in your search.

coverage during their stay abroad. They can either purchase
on their own or from a health care provider in France.

Housing/Accommodation:
UM Guesthouse
Most exchange students end up staying at the UM Guesthouse. The buildings are located in the vicinity of the
Faculties and are easily accessible by bike or on foot. Unfortunately SBE cannot guarantee that all students who
apply for a room at the Guesthouse actually get a room.
Applications are processed on a first-come-first-served
basis, and we have no influence on that process.
Reserving a room at the UM Guesthouse is possible via the
on-line reservation system at
www.Maastrichthousing.com.
How to find housing on your own?
Of course exchange students are not obliged to get a
room in the UM Guesthouse, even though it is the easiest
option. Students can also find a room on the private market. Check the following websites for alternatives:
www.HousingAnywhere.com: local, outgoing students
sublet their room for a short period of time to
incoming students.
www.Maastrichthousing.com: acts as intermediary for the
local housing corporations in the so-called
“social” rent sector, and is also the portal for the UM Guesthouse.
Financial Grant:
AUS students on grants/scholarships must obtain approval
from the Office of Financial Grants and Scholarships before
starting a semester abroad at a host university.
Health Insurance:
All exchange students must have valid health insurance
coverage during their stay abroad. They can either purchase
on their own or from a health care provider in Netherlands.
Visa:
Nationals of the following countries do not need a visa to
study in The Netherlands: Members of the EU, EEA, Switzerland, Australia, Canada, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, South
Korea, United States of America, Vatican City State.
A visa is necessary for nationals of all other countries when
staying for more than three months.
All non-EU nationals need a residence permit for a stay of
more than 3 months.
Please check the webpage of our Visa Office for more information: http://www.maastrichtuniversity.nl/visa
See http://uae.nlembassy.org/ for complete information on
Visa application process.

UVic | University of Victoria
Location:
Victoria, Canada
Eligibility:
. Sophomores encouraged to apply; must have at least 60
credits by program start date; seniors may not go in last
semester.
. You cannot go during your graduating semester (last
semester).
. You must have at least a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above.
Program Fees and Costs:
As an exchange student, you will pay AUS tuition fees for
the full course load (12-16 credits) in addition to Student
Activities fees. Any additional costs including housing, lab
fees, meal plans, books and insurance will be paid directly
to the host university.
Courses:
Exchange students can take from three to five courses
depending on their academic comfort level. Students
are not normally able to register in Engineering, Law,
Business,Education and Human & Social Development.
Some courses in Business are open to students, but the selection is very limited. Registration of courses is only
done after you have been accepted into the program. At
UVic, students must select courses and register for them
online well before the start of term. An admission letter
does not guarantee you entry to particular courses, so be
sure to register as soon as you are eligible. Most courses
fill quickly so students who register after their assigned
registration date will have fewer course options. For more
information, visit: http://iess.uvic.ca/exchangestouvic/
courseselection.html
CEN: Not ABET accredited (Engineering courses’ credits will
not be counted or transferred). The courses offered by the
School of Computer Science and School of Engineering
Science are limited to computer science majors and engineering science majors.
30
SBM: UVic’s College of Business is AACSB accredited.
Students are encouraged to take their general education
(humanities, etc.), free electives and Business electives
(MJR or MIN electives). Students can take major or required
courses during their study abroad semester after getting
the approval from the School of Business and Management
at AUS. A normal course work load for Canadian students
is five courses (7.5 units). Exchange students can take from
three to five courses depending on their academic comfort
level. Course outlines are sent to partner universities in February each year. There are two courses specially designed for
and offered to exchange students:
COM 206: Business English (1.5 units). Business English is designed to support the study of other course material and to
enhance the transition to regular business courses offered
by Peter B. Gustavson School of Business and UVic. Students in the course will be given opportunities to develop
their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills under
the guidance of a highly trained instructor experienced in
teaching English as a second language. Students with a
TOEFL score of less than 575 are required to enroll in this
course.
COM 390/290: An Introduction to the Canadian Business
Environment (1.5 Units). The purpose of this course is to introduce exchange students to the practical realities of doing
business in Canada, with Canadians. The course will cover a
broad range of topics including an overview of the social,
political, and economic environments of Canada. Students
with an excellent command of English will be permitted to
enrol in the regular business courses offered by Peter B. Gustavson School of Business if they meet the prerequisites.
CAS: Students can register for courses in Faculties of Social
Sciences, Humanities, and Science as long as you have satisfied all course prerequisites. There are limited courses in the
Faculty of Fine Arts that are open to exchange, so be sure to
check the UVic Calendar website: http://www.uvic.ca/calendar.
CAAD: No courses specific to architecture
NOTE: Students must fill out the AUS course permission
form to get their courses approved by the Associate Dean
of their school and the Registrar. Upon approval, students
would be provided with the grades required to transfer
credits. Students must achieve the minimum grade as
indicated on the form in order to receive course credit (requirements for credit transfer vary by program). Each study
abroad case is subject to approval.
Housing/Accommodation:
Homestay
Homestay is available to all students. Homestay (room &
board) is an excellent way for students to improve
their English and experience Canadian living. Should you
choose homestay, you will be matched
with a Canadian host who has been carefully selected for
his/her ability to provide a safe, comfortable, and
friendly home. The family will provide you with your own
room and food for CDN $800 per month. There
is also a one time $250 placement fee. To apply, please
visit: http://continuingstudies.uvic.ca/elc/accommodation/
Residence
Others may prefer on-campus residence (room & access to
cafeteria). Peter B. Gustavson School of Business
is allotted 30 single rooms in Residence. Therefore rooms
will be assigned on a first come, first serve
basis as the applications and deposits are received. The
residence location is convenient and all campus
facilities can be reached within ten minutes by foot. To apply and find out more information please visit
http://www.housing.uvic.ca. If you are assigned a room,
you can make arrangements to move in prior to the
Exchange Orientation.
Off-Campus Housing
Exchange students can also search for accommodation
independently. In such instances, students are responsible for undertaking the search process and making food
arrangements. Please visit: http://housing.uvic.ca/offcampus/ for more information. Most accommodation will be
available the 1st of September, but some may be available
immediately.
Students sponsored by an organization outside of AUS are
responsible for making arrangements with their sponsor.
Health Insurance:
-AON UVic International Students Medical Insurance
Program (PRIVATE): http://extranet.aon.ca/uvic/
- British Columbia Medical Services Plan (PUBLIC): http://
www.health.gov.bc.ca/msp/infoben/index.html
Medical coverage is compulsory for any international students in Canada. What type of medical insurance
is required? It depends on your length of stay. Please read
the following section carefully.
If you are staying for ONE term (4 months), it is recommended that you purchase private health insurance in your
own counrtry. The coverage should be equivalent to the one
offered by the British Columbia Medical Services Plan (refer
to the BC MSP website). If you are unable to find any insurance plan equivalent to the BC MSP, AON, UVic’s designated
private insurance company, offers a special insurance plan
for shortterm international students. Please apply BEFORE
your arrival in Canada.
If you are staying for TWO terms, you may choose to apply for the BC MSP, which will cost approximately $60 per
month. The MSP application must be submitted UPON your
arrival in Canada and your coverage will begin 3 months after your appication is submitted. It is important to purchase
a private insurance plan for the 3 month waiting period.
Also you can choose to stay in a private insurance plan for
the entire stay.
Either way, it is important to make sure that you are covered
by a medical insurance plan from the moment
you enter Canada until the day you leave for home.
Visa:
Study Permit
REQUIRED: if you will be staying for two terms and/or will
participate in the Business Co-op program.
RECOMMENDED: for any students for greater flexibility.
Entry Visa (Temporary Resident Visa)
Students from certain countries are required to obtain this
visa IN ADDITION to a study permit. Please make sure to apply for “multi-entry” visa instead of “single-entry”. This allows
you to leave and enter Canada many times during your stay.
Check with the Canadian Embassy to enquire if you need a
visa to study in Canada. If so, to apply, you will need to have
the following:
• the admission letter sent to you by the University of
Victoria
• proof of funds
• a return ticket
• a valid passport
Please visit: http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/
