AGREEMENT BETWEEN PRO SALUD AND
THE SECRETARIAT DISTRICT OF PUBLIC EDUCATION
The agreement between Pro Salud and the Secretariat District of Public
Education was signed in March. The goal was to provide Sex Education
Training to teachers who work with students in elementary, middle and high
school. The agreement includes a teacher's performance assessment
questionnaire.
A total of 25 teachers received the Sex Education Course.
Ms. Juana Perez, Secretary of Education, Mr. Carlos Bustamante, Mayor of Tijuana and Marcela Merino.
HUMAN PAPILLOMA VIRUS IMMUNIZATION
Pro Salud Mobile Clinic was set up at five different schools where 174 young women
between the ages of 10 to 19 years were vaccinated against HPV. These vaccinations were
made possible through funding from the Lee & Leona Humiston Fund from Fundación
Internacional de la Comunidad, and fundraising by Caitlin Hird of Del Mar, California, the
International Community Foundation of San Diego, and the Administration of the Patrimony
of Public Welfare of Mexico.
The vaccination program was well accepted
by parents, teachers and students who
acknowledge Pro Salud and the
organizations that supported this project.
It is worth mentioning that the successful
vaccination program is due to the
collaboration between the cities of San
Diego and Tijuana.

CLUB DE AMIGOS DE FRONTERAS UNIDAS PRO SALUD
Club de Amigos de Fronteras Unidas Pro
Salud was formed in August, and was
designed to support the activities of the
organization and to participate in the 3X1
Migrant Program. It is comprised of
individuals interested in promoting
education and health services in Baja
California. The club's council consists of
ten Mexican professionals living in
California.
FILANTROFILIA RATING
The Filantrofilia organization (whose tag
line is “Building the New Philanthropy”)
was awarded Pro Salud an “A” rating for
its institutional development and social
impact. The rating was based on return
investment, effectiveness, efficiency
and annual scope (number of
beneficiaries).
COMMUNITY PROGRAM
Administering of the HPV vaccine to a student at a school
in Valle Verde
The community program aims to provide medical and education services in
the marginalized and indigenous communities of Tijuana, Rosarito, and
Ensenada.
COMMUNITY
PROGRAM
Talk on breast cancer
The program conducts health campaigns in different communities in order
to promote self care, family planning, sexual transmitted infections
prevention and early detection of cervical and breast cancer.
GRAND OPENING OF CONSULTORIO EL NIÑO
The grand opening of Consultorio El Niño was in February. The medical staff
and the health promoters (promotoras) provide presentations twice a week.
It offers medical and educational services in sexual and reproductive health,
nutrition, diabetes, and gender violence.
In 2011 the Consultorio El Niño served over 1 000 people.

CAMPAIGN “ENTRE MUJERES NOS CUIDAMOS”
(WOMEN CARING FOR WOMEN)
Mexfam invited Pro Salud to participate in the campaign "Women Caring for
Women", sponsored by Bayer of Mexico. The campaign aims to support low
income women in receiving free pap smears and information on women’s health.
Through the Mobile Clinic, Pro
Salud provided over 600 pap
smear tests in a two-month
period. This achievement is due
in part to the work and
advocacy of community health
promoters (promotoras).

WOMEN‘S REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH STUDY IN VALLE VERDE
In order to assess reproductive health
in population of indigenous and nonindigenous women living in Valle
Verde, Pro Salud collaborated with the
School of Trans-border Studies at
Arizona State University to replicate a
study assessing the needs of girls,
adolescents and women 10 years and
older. A total of 1 083 surveys were
conducted, focusing on sociodemographic variables, reproductive
health, health practices and utilization
of health services.

WOMEN‘S REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH STUDY IN VALLE VERDE
The results of the survey are as follow:
• 3% of women aged 15-19 have no educational
background.
• 5% have not completed elementary education.
• Early onset of motherhood in a large group of
adolescents.
• 3% of girls ages 10-14 and 15% of 15-19 years have
1 or 2 child(ren)
• In women 20 years and older, over 50% have not had a
pap smear in the last 3 years
Conducting surveys in Valle Verde
• Non-indigenous women have done less pap smears
than indigenous women. This figure shows us the
great work done by the Mixteca promoters (indigenous
health outreach workers) promoting early detection of
cervical cancer among their countrywomen.
COLLABORATION WITH DIF TIJUANA
(LOCAL SOCIAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT)
In May through October, we visited 13 DIF Community Development
Centers in Tijuana, where we provided medical and educational
services to men, women and children reaching a total of 648 people.
Health Day in collaboration with DIF Tijuana

BASIC SEX EDUCATION FOR TRAINERS
BAJA CALIFORNIA MINISTRY OF HEALTH
The Specific Action Plan 2007-2012 Sexual and Reproductive Health for Adolescents
indicates that “service providers should be sensitive to meet the needs on sexual
and reproductive health of adolescents". Therefore, the Ministry of Health of Baja
California sub-contracted Pro Salud to train doctors, nurses, health promoters,
psychologists and social workers.
A total of 168 professionals received
training: 64 in Tijuana, 36 in Mexicali,
29 in Ensenada and 39 in Vicente
Guerrero in the Valley of San Quintin.
This was a 3 day training totaling 20
hours. At the end, the participants
expressed their satisfaction and
compromise to start applying what
they learned in their respective health
centers.

INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST HUMAN TRAFFICKING
In celebration of this day, Gente Joven through an invitation of DIF Tijuana
participated with an information module about methods of contraception at the
health fair that took place on September 22nd in Morelos Park. The fair was
attended by more than 2 000 youth between 14 and 17 years from various middle
and high schools in Tijuana. Through the modules, the Gente Joven Program
provided information to youth on sexual health, recruited new promoters and
provided methods of contraception to adolescents and young adults.

CAMPS
Two camps were hosted in the spring and two in the summer at Espacio Gente
Joven (Youth Space) and the schools Vee 'Sa'a Kua'a and Guelaguetza in Valle Verde.
The participation of youth promoters and guest speakers was crucial in the
coordination of activities, where they engaged in arts and sports activities. The
invited professionals spoke about their career in order to motivate and spark the
interest of participants in different work fields.
During the closing session
parents, friends and Pro Salud
staff were presented with a
summary of activities. A total of
194 children and adolescents
attended the camps and received
medical services.

TESTIMONY
“My name is Andrea Cruz Chavez. I am a
psychology student and promotora of Pro
Salud. I chose this program to do my
internship because it specializes in an area
which I had little experience in and wanted to
work with large groups of youths. During my
internship I learned that there is a desire for
learning more about young people, including
myself. What I liked the most is that young
people share their concerns, ideas, questions
and experiences. It's quite satisfying to be
able to help them better manage their
sexuality. In addition, being a promotora
and working with youth has given me
experiences that elsewhere I wouldn't had
acquired; for example, attended lectures on
transgender children, HIV, teaching English,
etc..
Andrea Cruz 22 years old
Promotora Gente Joven
I really enjoyed my experience as a
promotora. Every day I learn something
different, not only on sexual and
reproductive health, but also about myself
because in every activity with the Youth
Group I faced different challenges and it is
my responsibility to manage them
favorably as beneficiaries of this
institution”.

TESTIMONY
“I would like to take the opportunity to show my appreciation to the Pro Salud staff. The
staff from “Grupo Modelo” (GM) and the administration is very pleased with the services
provided to their personnel and their families. GM has excellent benefits, but they're not
all available for the employee's family, nor have monthly payments through payroll
deductions like Pro Salud suggested through the Industrial Program . No doubt, this
agreement is a success and I hope it prevails for a long time. Ms. Marcela Merino and
Lucia Mendoza, are the key stakeholders making sure that the clinic provides quality
services and great human warmth, which we had an opportunity to witness during this
collaboration”.
