WINTER 2014
In Memoriam – Kenneth Ardell Meyers, Jr.
n Memoriam
A Majestic Farewell
Kenneth Ardell Myers Jr. and his wife Su Myers, of Manassas, VA have been long-time
members and supporters of the Colonial Newfoundland Club. Together they fostered and
rescued four Newfoundlands, welcoming each into their hearts and homes.
On December 28, 2013, Kenneth Myers, 72, passed away. On the day of his burial, standing
outside Pierce Funeral Home in Manassas, VA were nine Newfoundlands and their owners.
As mourners exited a very crowded ceremony, these majestic creatures lined the walkway.
The family, overwhelmed with emotion and pride, watched as the Newfoundlands stood at
perfect attention.
Later at the burial, these Gentle Giants (as Ken frequently referred to them), sat quietly in the
distance as Ken was laid to rest; a majestic farewell for an amazing man.
The family would like to thank all those who made donations to the Colonial Newfoundland
Club in lieu of flowers and in memory of Ken. Over $1500 has been collected thus far.
This money and recognition will go a long way in assisting the many Newfoundlands in our
area.
Special thanks to the owners and their pets who graciously attended the service:

Kenneth Ardell Meyers, Jr.
I might not be able to talk,
but still have two ears to listen.
I might not be able to say I support you,
but my eyes speak volumes.
I might not have a shoulder to cry on,
but I have fur you can use to wipe away your tears.
I might not have two arms to hold you
but I’ll stand by your side just the same.
I promise to try my best to make you laugh,
even when you feel like crying.
With a love that is unconditional,
and loyalty everlasting.
Your Dog

A VERY SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO KEN MYERS
CNC Rescue has received many generous donations and heartfelt comments in
memory of Ken Myers but this one is extra special.
We have received permission from the writer to publish it here:
My name is Kenny Myers and my grandfather was Kenneth
Ardell Myers Sr. and I know how much he loved his dogs and
that is why I would like to donate the $15 I earned to the
Newfoundland Foundation because I know my grandfather would
have done the same thing and when I get older I will be taking
his place in serving the country with the dignity and respect
just as he did.
Respectfully,
Kenny Myers
Contributions to CNC Rescue may still be made in memory and in honor of Ken

CNC Member of the Year!
CNC Member of the Year Award
by Rosemary Miller
As outgoing president, I’d like to take a few minutes to honor our member of the year –
Cindy Flowers.
There is so much to say about Cindy…she has given so much to Colonial Newfoundland Club
in so many ways. From designing artwork and fund-raising for the National; to multiple jobs in
multiple water tests; to Middleburg Specialty Chair and chairing our supported entries and regionals
for year…Cindy is there for the club. Her grooming seminars are legendary, as are her individual
grooming lessons – and every penny earned goes to Newfie rescue. She’s been there for so many of
us – myself included.
Cindy is always there for the Newfies. As an AKC Breeder of Merit and even more
importantly, the strongest of proponents for breeding healthy, happy, true to type Newfoundlands
that excel in both the show and performance arenas. As a teacher, she’s helped so many of us by
giving a Water Rescue Seminar, show trimming, tips on handling in the ring, evaluation of puppies,
breeding advice…
While so much more can be said, what needs to be said is a heartfelt
THANK YOU CINDY from Colonial Newfoundland Club!!
Cindy…grandmother…breeder…registration chair at national…steward…chair…secretary for so many
working events…sweeps judge at national…and good friend to all!

Williamsburg Christmas Parade
2013
Of Christmas Parades and Annual Meetings
Aka
“The Diaries of Lady Calza”
One of my favorite events that the CNC attends is the annual Williamsburg Christmas
Parade. It is usually held the first Saturday in December, and judging by attendance,
seems to be one of the most popular CNC events! After the parade, the CNC Annual Meeting is
usually held at the Club’s host hotel. A few changes were made this year, primarily to the host
hotel and the food at the meeting; prizes were also given for best costume and best-decorated cart.
This year, the host hotel was the LaQuinta. I must say that this venue was MUCH nicer
than the Days Inn we have stayed at in the past. This year we had a large crew of Newfs and
their handlers in the parade. There was a winter storm approaching that day but fortunately, the
cold rain held off for the length of the parade. It was touch and go there for a few minutes! Both
the carts AND participants were well dressed, and as always, our dogs were very popular with the
crowd. There were a lot of pictures taken during and after the parade; some appear with this
article, while others appear on the Club’s Rescue page on Facebook.
The Annual Luncheon and Meeting went very well. The La Quinta eating and meeting
areas comfortably handled the 50 people who were in attendance. The meeting was a jovial affair
with lots of awards and many Power Point presentations. As usual, there was a Brown Bag Raffle
and a great deal of Newfoundland dog related merchandise for sale. This is such a great event on
which to end our “Newf” year, and I would personally like to thank the people who made this
special event possible!!

CNC Pancake Breakfast and Newf Hike
The CNC Pancake Breakfast and Newf Hike at Oregon Ridge Park
****Attention those getting ready for the Draft tests at the National, this is
an excellent training opportunity!!
Date: March 1st, Rain/Snow date of March 2.
Location: 13401 Beaver Dam Rd., Cockeysville, MD
Meeting Place: bottom of the parking lot at the Lodge
Meet Time: 9:30 am - at 10 am we will head into the lodge to consume our
pancakes, sausage and the Maple Syrup that comes from the trees in the park.
*** Dogs are not permitted inside the lodge
Hike time: approx. 11:00-11:30 we will round up back in the parking lot to head
out on our hike.
This is a casual event for you, your family and your Newf.
Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.
Puppies are welcome but please be advised-- this is a 2+ mile hike and depending
on age it may not be in their best interest to complete the entire route.
Accommodations can be made if you want to bring your pup but not take them on
the hike. This is an excellent socialization activity that would be a shame to miss.
***Those getting ready for Draft Tests are welcome to bring their carts as most of
the trails will accommodate them and the park has every terrain available
including a beach.
If you are carting, please give yourself extra time for assembly.

CNC Newfs at Greenspring Retirement Village
This past October, I was contacted by Greenspring Retirement Village; they asked if a
Newfoundland team could participate in their Pet Parade. The number of members who graciously
volunteered to share their wonderful dogs was tremendous. However, there was only room for one
Newf team, and after a last minute cancellation, Jules Gable and her dogs from Virginia Beach
represented both our club and breed.
“I’ll always be grateful to her for saving us at the last minute, which she did so very
graciously. And what lovely dogs Blue and Sammi are! The residents were absolutely thrilled to
meet them. In addition to her major contributions, Julia and Gabor took great photos of the other
dogs and made them available to us. Thank you again for your significant role in making our Pet
Parade such a success!”
Kay – Greenspring Retirement Village
Thank you to everyone who volunteered to participate in this event. The coordinator was very
impressed and overwhelmed at the number of people who offered to take part in their program. I
would especially like to thank Jules and Gabor for sharing their beloved Newfoundlands, Blue and
Sammi with the residents!

One day, an old man was walking down the beach just before dawn. In the distance he
saw a young man picking up stranded starfish and throwing them back into the sea. As
the old man approached the young man, he asked, "Why do you spend so much energy
doing what seems to be a waste of time?" The young man explained that the stranded
starfish would die if left in the morning sun. The old man exclaimed, "But there must be
thousands of starfish. How can your efforts make any difference?" The young man looked
down at the starfish in his hand and as he threw it to safety in the sea, he said," It makes
a difference to this one!"

Our Beloved "Bailey Bear" Blaicher
President Ulysses Grant loved horses, but suffered misfortune with a series of dogs.
While in the White House, each died of unknown causes. When Jesse, Grant’s son, voiced fears
that his treasured Newfoundland was fated to go the same way,
the president summoned the White House steward.
"Father asked no questions, made no accusations,” Jesse wrote later and Grant ended
the matter with a simple political promise:
"Jesse has a new dog. You may have noticed that his former pets have been
particularly unfortunate. When this dog dies, every employee in the White House
will be at once discharged.'
The Newfoundland, named Faithful, enjoyed superb health throughout Grant's tenure in
the White House, according the 1979 book entitled White House Pets by Margaret Truman.
