Superintendent’s Honor Roll
Six students were nominated by their teachers for the Superintendent’s Honor Roll. These students were honored at
the Board Meeting on April 20th. Teachers have chosen these students not only because they do well academically,
but also because of their character. They work hard, pay attention, help others, show respect, and genuinely
care for their school and their friends. Students who receive this award will be treated to a field trip at the end
of the school year. This year’s group will be headed to a Roughriders baseball game. Congratulations to Ashley
Betancourt, Kynlee Chalker, Sarah Denton, Elizabeth Schroeter, Addison Mercer, and Nicolas Gonzalez.
Champion Awards
Three times per year, the staff at GISD nominate their colleagues who have gone above and beyond to “live the motto”
of the district; in short, to be a “Champion”. Our spring honorees are: Tara Rice (Counselor, GES), Debbie Murphy
(Science, GMS), Cynthia Foster (Technology, GHS) and Justin Wallis (GMS/GHS Band). These folks are not only
incredible in their classrooms or office, they are a true champion for our students!
Important Notice: The June issue of Tiger Times will not be released until June 6th. This will allow us to include all
school events to the end of the school year.
School Board Member Recognized
GISD Board Member, Ron Box, was honored at the school board
meeting on April 20th. He has served this district for 15 years,
and this was his last official board meeting. Dr. Siler presented
him with a crystal bowl engraved with his name and the dates
of his service filled to capacity with notes of thanks from faculty
and students. Mr. Box will certainly be missed for his wittiness
and ability to think beyond “just the surface” of many issues. Mr.
Jonas, Dr. Harris, and former superintendent, Mr. Cohagan, all
addressed the audience at the meeting offering their thanks and
personal comments regarding his dedication and service to this
district. Thank you, once again Mr. Box, for serving this district
for so many years!
The Gunter Parks Foundation is happy to announce 3 big fundraisers.
On Saturday, May 2nd, from 5pm-8pm, we are hosting the
Jane Robinson Memorial Concert in the Park. We will
have performances by Justin Pecina, Mitch McConnell,
The Buckner Sisters, Lauren Baird, and Cade Meyerdirk.
There will be hotdogs, hamburgers, and cold drinks
available for purchase. You can purchase your handprint
tiles for $30, and attend the handprint tile workshop available during the
event. A quilt is being donated and auctioned in honor of Mrs. Robinson.
You will be able to purchase tickets to that drawing at the park. A blood drive
will be set up during the event for those who would like to donate blood. All
proceeds will go to the special fund for Jane Robinson’s memorial placed on
the playground. Entry is $5/person and children 4 and under are free.
June 3rd starting at 9am and ending at 9am June 4th on the Gunter Parks
Foundation Facebook page, we will be hosting a 24 hour Facebook baked
goods auction. A flyer will be sent home with the students with directions
on how to participate. We will also have that information posted on social
media and our website. Be sure to mark this down on your calendars and take
a little time and bid on some yummy treats!
Ella and Landrie Brummett hosted a
lemonade stand and raised $235.74 to be
donated to Jane Robinson’s memorial fund
(which will be donated to the Gunter Parks
Foundation for Jane’s memorial in the
playground). They also donated $23.50 of
their own money to add to this. The girls did
this to support their friend, Elyson Schafer
(Mrs. Robinson’s granddaughter)
June 13th from 6pm until 10pm we will host our big Concert in the Park Fundraiser
and BBQ Cook-off. It is $25 for the entry fee to participate in the cook-off. There will
be a $150 Grand Champion and $50 First Prize awarded in each category. Please
visit our website http://gunterparksfoundation.com for your entry form and more
information. There will be performances by Justin Pecina and Dixie Rex. Bounce
houses will be set up for the little ones. Some of the best BBQ prepared by all locals
available for purchase, listen to some extraordinary performers, and relax with your
family at the future site of our community-built playground. Entry is $5/person and
children 4 and under are free.

Dear Parent,
Can you believe that this school year is almost over?
It has been a great pleasure to prepare and serve great meals to your children. My staff and I would like to personally thank
you for all the kind words and joy that your children bring to our cafeterias each and every day!
With the coming of the end of the school year, we need to close out our accounts for the year and get all outstanding balances paid in full.
Starting May 1, 2015, we will not allow any charges of any kind. If a student does not have money in their accounts or with them, they will
be given a sack lunch (free of charge), they will also be handed a reminder slip showing that they were given a sack lunch and a reminder
of what they owe.
You can deposit money in your child’s account by sending a check to your child’s campus, sending cash payments with your child or making
on-line payments with your My School Bucks account information. This may be found on the Gunter ISD website at www.gunterisd.org.
Please make every effort to ensure that your child has funds available in their account until the end of the school year. If you have any
questions or concerns, please contact me at (903) 696-0131 or email me at [email protected].
Thank You,
Lauren Rogers

The annual GIFT
Banquet was held
on April 30th. The
guest
speaker,
Morgan Waggoner,
inspired the students
to be PROACTIVE.
She asked, “What
did it take to get here tonight?” Looking at the word in
itself, you will find that you need to plan, find reasons
to be strong, observe, take action, calm down, trust,
imagine the celebration, value the pain (it’s worth it),
and experience the joy that comes from all of the good
decisions you’ve made. Thank you, Morgan, for such an
inspiring message for the students.
Three campus grants were
awarded to the following staff
members: Kelly Marr was
granted money to purchase the
entire Nancy Drew and Hardy
Boys mystery series for the
GMS library. Steve Fletcher
received a grant to purchase
field guides for 7th grade
science. Lauren Rogers was
granted money to take her staff
to the Texas Association for
School Nutrition conference
this summer in Grapevine,
Texas.
In total, $30,603.72 was given out, and it wouldn’t
be possible without the donors. If you have made a
donation to GIFT, we thank you!

Q and U United in Marriage
“What grammar has brought together, let no misspelling
separate,” said Pastor Roy Layman as he officially united Q
and U during the wedding ceremony in our kindergarten
classes. The children were dressed as the letters Q and
U and said their vows to always let Q come before U in
a word, and to never separate. The “letters” exchanged
rings, a hug, and a short dance to make the union official.
The reception had a lovely display of cakes and punch
to be enjoyed by each Q and U who participated.
The letters will be planning a QUest,
maybe to QUebec ... or
maybe they will
just go QUail
hunting :)
Muffins for Moms
The entry of GES was filled with moms on
April 6th. Free muffins were served by the
Gunter Parent Organization to the moms as
they perused the book selections available in

What could be more fun than
having permission to sing about
the things that gross us out, or at
the very least make us SQUIRM? The musical is all about
celebrating the things that make us squirm and discovering
that most of those things are in some way, good for us.
The 1st graders are very excited to present the musical.
Don’t miss it!
Want to remember your child’s year? The best way

Science Comes to L
ife in the 5th Grade
The 5th grade class went on a field
trip to The Perot Museum of Nature
and Science located in Victory Park,
near Downtown Dallas. The field
trip was made possible by Dr. Pincus
of Parkhaven Dental in Gunter.
This year, he actually went on the
field trip with them! Thank you,
Dr. Pincus for making this happen
for our 5th graders. The museum
(new in 2012) inspires curiosity on
every age level. With the hands-on
learning experiences, it is a living
science lesson for children of all
ages; and adults too!

Careers in Art
It’s never too early to begin planning your future. In fact, our middle school art students
have done just that. Mrs. Porter had the students research a career with “art” skills required.
On a poster, they had to draw pictures of what they would create if this was their chosen
career and create a business card. Here are just a few examples of the great work they did.
GMS Choir - Success!
(Right) The 5th and 6th grade choir attended Sandy Lake
Choir contest on April 30th. These students have been under
the direction of GHS choir student, Mackenzie Buckner
since January, and she has done a super job molding these fine
musicians. They performed well at contest, and received a
division 2 rating from the judges.
(Left) Gunter 7th & 8th grade choir attended Middle
School UIL Concert and Sight reading contest for the first
time in the history of the choir department. The students
did very well for the first time.
The group was awarded straight 2’s on stage and 3’s
in the sight reading room. Mrs. Kulbeth is very proud of
everything this group has accomplished this year. Just to
brag on these kids, we want to share a statement sent to
Mrs. Kulbeth from Jan Blize, Choir Director at Paris High School. She said, “I would like to take this opportunity to say how
impressed I was with how your choir performed on Tuesday morning. When they started singing, they sounded like a HS
Honor Choir. Kudos! It is also highly impressive that a school of our size (1-C) had so many students.” Ms. Blize continues on
to praise Mrs. Kulbeth, and her skills as a choir director. In closing, she said “I was so proud of your kiddos and you!”

History Through the Eyes of Our Students
For those of you who
have attended GHS
in the last 15 years,
you have crossed the
threshold of Coach
Neely’s classroom.
Once you have sat in his chairs as a student,
you know the passion he carries for his subject,
World History. In fact, if you just pass by his
classroom, you can hear his passion through
his lectures. For years, students have said how
much they learned from him, and how his class had helped them through
their college history class. One project Coach Neely does every year
with his students is the charcoal drawings depicting a battle scene from
WWI. The drawings must accurately represent the scene including the
uniforms and the weaponry. Everything is done in charcoal pencil and
freehanded. His walls are covered with the artistic talents of past and
present students who have taken a little piece of history with them. Here
is just a glimpse of what hangs in his room.

SWEEPSTAKES!
The GHS Choir received the highest ratings from all judges on stage and sight reading.
Way to go! Sweepstakes!
Gunter High School Chamber Choir attended UIL Concert and Sight Reading
contest for the first time in 12 years and made a huge impact on our region!
These students earned Sweepstakes. That means straight 1’s on stage and
in the sight reading room by each judge. This is a HUGE accomplishment.
Randy Decker, retired choir director from Gilmer High School came out
and personally talked with the choir and praised them for the outstanding
performance. Way to go!
Sophomore
Chamber
Choir
member, Zach Magers, attended the
National Association of Teachers
of Singing. NATS celebrates the
art of singing through a series of
competitions and programs that are
designed to showcase the talented
singers and performers who are soon
to be rising stars in this profession.
Zach was selected by his private
voice instructor, Mrs. Rivers. Zach
won the division (1st Place!) for the
contest he competed in. Congrats to
Zach Magers.
Hard Luck Choir Cafe
Did someone say Gunter’s Got Talent? On Saturday night April 25th, Select and Chamber Choirs brought the house
down with talented students performing music from the 1950s to 1980’s. They put on a show that left the audience
wishing for more! Yes, Gunter does have Talent. Thanks to all that support us, and to the awesome students for
putting on an amazing show.
Important date change:
The GHS/GMS Spring Choir Show will be on Tuesday, May 12, 2015. Middle School Choirs will begin at 6:00 PM, and High School
Choirs will begin at 7:00 PM. The GHS show might last longer than you expect, so if you only have a MS student, you may choose
to leave after the middle school concert is over. We’d love you to stay if you want to see some more amazing talent!

Once upon a time, little girls dreamed of becoming a princess, and on this
night, they all did! The girls looked stunning, and the guys looked so handsome! Our group made a great impression
on the DJ, he even came out at the end to say that after 19 years, this was the best group he had ever had. Wow!
Thank you to all that were involved in the preparations and decorations. Thank you to Mr. Teems, Mr. Dodd, Ms.
Gittens & Ms. Long for chaperoning. And a huge thanks to Ms. Lashley for coordinating prom and after-prom and
to everyone who helped with that event. The evening was such a success!
Physics Students or Authors?
To show off their knowledge of light and color, physics students
were challenged to write a children’s storybook explaining how
we see colors. They had to explain why we see colors the way
we do, identify the primary colors of light versus paint, and do
this in a way a child could understand.
To test their books, and how well they explained the concept,
they took them over to the 5th grade classroom and read it to
them. By the looks of it, they colored their world!

UIL SEND OFF
The GHS students gave a proper send-off
to our UIL Regional Qualifiers.
UIL - Brains & Dedication in Action!
Gunter’s UIL Academic Team traveled to the regional competition held at Tyler Junior
College on April 25th. Gunter is in region 2 of 3A. This region had 32 districts.
The Gunter team consisted of:
Computer Applications: Zach Magers
Science: Derek Hall - (Jonathan Avendano: Alternate in Science)
Mathematics Team: Chase Fox, Derek Hall, Christopher Jackson, Joshua Potapov
(Taylor Smith: Alternate in Mathematics)
It’s not easy being in the UIL Academic Competition. These students put in extra
hours studying throughout the year trying to reach this level in hopes of moving on to
the state competition, and possibly winning scholarship money. Regionals in itself is a
great accomplishment!
In Mathematics Chase Fox came in 10th and Derek Hall placed 16th in a field of 43
contestants. Of 9 teams, Gunter came in 6th place with a score of 332. Looking at all
regional competitions, our mathematics team came in 8th place in state. That is quite
an accomplishment.
In Science Derek Hall came in 6th overall in a field of
49 contestants, earning him a bronze medal. He also
came in 2nd in Biology, earning him a silver medal and
an alternate position to state. Congratulations!
The remaining students did not place in the top, but they did not place in the bottom either! They did very well.
There are many different types of academic events. If you have the guts to be a part of this very special team next year, start early! Go by
Mrs. Foster’s room to look at all of the events available to you. Who knows? A little extra time studying could earn you scholarship money.
Anatomy & Physiology -Taking a Look Inside
When you spend the whole school year in class learning about the body, the ultimate learning activity would, of course,
be to take a look inside the body. The A&P students are doing just that. They learned about the skin, muscles, bones,
and all of the different systems of the body in class, and now can get a real visual of all of this in their cat dissection unit.
Careful dissection techniques are similar to a surgeon performing a procedure on a patient. The students are learning
more than just about the body in this unit, they are also learning whether or not they would make a good surgeon with a
steady hand, a coroner, or maybe a veterinarian. They might also be learning that the medical field is not in their future
for one reason or another. Either way, the unit is an interesting experience for the students.
It would be a CAT-astrophe if I showed you what is under here!

FFA State Officers Visit Gunter
Three State FFA Officers (Gracie Hedrick of Groesbeck, Jeb Hogan of Franklin, and Matthew Huston of
Lindsay) visited the Gunter FFA Chapter to help them become involved with the “Random Act of Kindness”
program. Through this program, the members will learn to be more giving, and to serve others. To lighten
the mood of the meeting, three of our members were called upon to “entertain” the group, (Luke, Crissi,
and Ross) by acting out a scenario. The group voted Luke as the winning entertainer. “Thank you, GFFA
members, for participating and showing respect and attention to this presentation,” said Mr. O’Hanlon.
Ag Mechanics students are always busy and learning new skills. Noah and Brandon
have been busy making Forever Metal Roses for the FFA Banquet decorations. John,
Ty, and Austin have been working on new fenders for Mr. Jonas’ trailer. They used
MIG welding and Oxy-Acetylene cutting skills in this project.

Spring Sports Review
by Jake Fieszel, Athletic Director
It has been another amazing year for Gunter Athletics. I am so proud of our athletes and coaches
and all they have accomplished. In Gunter, we strive to be the best and win championships
on the court and on the playing field, but more than that we as coaches strive to impact our
athletes and help them to achieve their goals at Gunter High School and beyond. I am blessed
to have a staff that wants to impact young people as much as they want to win championships.
Below are some of the highlights from our winter and spring sports at GHS:
Our baseball team is having another stellar year. We are currently sitting in 1st place in district and have only been
on the losing side of the scoreboard twice this entire year. Pitching and defense continue to be the driving force
behind this year’s team. This group is talented at every position and a long playoff run to the state tournament
is certainly not out of reach. We are all looking forward to watching what this group accomplishes this season!
The softball team just finished up their season this week. The girls fought hard all season long and we are proud
of the way the girls finished a tough year. Megan Bullard and Kaylee Schmitz represented Gunter in the Herald
Democrat Offensive Leader Polls for much of the season. The girls improved all year and made some big strides
throughout the season. We are going to miss our seniors, but are very excited about the youth on this year’s
team and what the future holds for Gunter Softball.
Our girls basketball team started the year slow, but continued to improve and ended up finishing third in the
district to earn a playoff spot. The girls finished with a 14-17 record. Our ladies represented GHS with class and
pride all year. We lost some very good seniors, but we are also excited about some of the young talent we have
coming up through the program.
The Varsity Boys Basketball team had a tough year. Lack of experience hurt the young Tigers, but they fought
hard all year. We will certainly miss our seniors and their leadership. There is quite a bit of young talent on this
team so the future is certainly bright for the Tigers.
Zach Magers was our only GHS swimmer this year and had an outstanding year. He qualified for the regional
Volume 6, Issue 10

swim meet for the second year in a row and posted a personal best at the meet. Zach has a bright future ahead
of him as a swimmer not only because he is talented, but because he has a work ethic that is second to none. We
are proud of what Zach has accomplished and looking forward to watching him continue to improve.
Our boys track program trained in harsh conditions and put in a lot of work to get ready for the district track
meet. That hard work paid off with notable finishes in the JV and Varsity divisions. The kids not only bettered
themselves physically, but also in other areas such as mental toughness, teamwork and work-ethic. Some of the
top finishes in the district track meet are below:
Varsity Track: 4x100 2nd Place, 4x400 2nd Place, 400m 1st Place Garrett Hunter, 1600m and 3200m Brandon
Hunsaker 4th place, Pole Vault Spencer Lashley 1st place, Shot Cameron Hearn 4th place: JV Track: 4x100 1st
Place
4X200 2nd Place, 4x400 3rd Place, 300m hurdles Trey Carr 2nd Place, 100 m Ryan Reed 4th Place, High Jump
Jared Taylor 3rd Place.
The girls track team finished the district meet placing 4th in the varsity division. 10 out of the 27 girls on the
team advanced to the area meet, with the majority of them in multiple events. The girls have done an amazing
job of reaching their team and individual goals for the season. This group has some amazing seniors that will be
missed, but also has a lot of young talent. The future is bright for Lady Tiger Track!
The boys and girls golf teams both had a great year. We had two female golfers who placed 13th and 22nd at the
District Tournament. The boys placed 1st at Turtle Hill and 2nd at the District Tournament, which qualified them
for the Regional Tournament in Tyler. The Team placed 4th at Regionals, barely missing the cutoff to advance
to the State Tournament. Kevin Teems had a great year shooting 74 and 81 at the regional tournament, which
placed him 7th in the Region, just out of contention to advance to the State Tournament. Overall, it was quite a
year for our GT golfers.
The GHS Powerlifting team started practice in October and had a very successful season with many of the
members bringing home multiple awards. They attended 4 invitational meets and at each meet medals were
brought home. With only 3 of the team members ever having previous experience in competition, a learning
team went above and beyond their expectations. Team members included: Nick Rivera (captain), Jose Betancourt
(co-captain), Luis Betancourt, Garrett Hunter, Sharayah Mullins, Destiny Caperton, Raul Rico, Sheldon Parkman,
Briscoe Fletcher (trainer) and Will Roane. Sharayah Mullins and Sheldon Parkman both qualified for regionals
with their totals (635lb and 1340lb) and unfortunately Sheldon was injured during a meet and wasn’t able to
compete. Sharayah ended up 8th in the entire Division 3 women’s powerlifting region. Luis and Jose Betancourt
were nominated and chosen for the THSPA (Texas High School Powerlifiting Association)’s academic teams.
The GHS Tennis team participated in 4 tournaments this year. In those 4 tournaments 7 of our 16 players
medaled. Rylie Lashley and Bella Zuniga won the doubles division of the Princeton small school tournament with
Sydney Morrison and Emily Price coming in 2nd. Taylor Prosser was the consolation champion in singles at the
Prosper tournament. Jake White and his partner were 3rd in the doubles division at the Denison JV tournament.
Overall it was an excellent year for GHS tennis and we are very proud of how this year’s team represented Gunter
High School.

presented plans for future development in
Gunter. Elm Creek Ranch is a 1,000 acre
master-planned development slated for the
southwest portion of our district (north of
Marilee; west of Texas Longhorn). There will
be parks, open spaces, walking trails along
with mostly residential areas. Initial plans
include 3600 single family home sites along
with 3 school sites, commercial property and
some multi-family and town homes. The
timeline is still several years away (5-10)
depending on access to water and other
development in the area.

 Monthly Financial Reports
o GISD & GSCEC SSA Financials Reports
were given.
o Dr. Siler shared that a 2015-2016 budget
update would not be available until
property taxes were received later in
April.
o Dr. Siler shared a facility capacity analysis
to give the board an idea of when we
would need additional campuses. At the
elementary, there is space to add 1
additional
teacher
for
each grade level K-4, allowing for 239
additional students maximum. At the
middle school, there is space for 5
additional teachers (utilizing the 2
portable buildings), allowing for 99
additional students and at the high
school, there is space to add 195
additional students. Knowing that we
won’t be able to perfectly schedule even
numbers at each grade level, Dr. Siler
shared the following “functional” capacity
figures for each campus: GES: 510, GMS:
330, GHS: 450, GISD TOTAL: 1,257. This is
a total of 457 additional students before
additional campuses would be needed.
At this time, GISD has 24 more students
than it did last year.
o Dr. Siler gave a Bond Update.
A
list of capital projects needed was
presented that includes: technology
upgrades, parking lot lights, security
cameras, concrete parking lots and
transportation drive, HVAC repair,
softball
changing
facilities,
roof
replacements, facility repairs, carpeting,
restroom work, and more. While we have
$6 million of unused bond funds, we are
not able to sell any until our property
values rise to ensure we are able to make
our bond payment. We will receive

The Tiger Times - Page 25
preliminary values next week and have a
better idea of whether we’ll be able to
move forward on any of these projects.
o Dr. Siler also shared four different options
on purchasing technology to upgrade the
district (approximately $350,000): selling
additional bond, bank loan, lease
equipment with technology group or
purchase through our annual budget over
the next six years. The board is waiting
for more information on property values
and next year’s budget to make a
decision on how to move forward.
 Communications:
o Dr. Siler presented information on the
new Teacher and Principal Appraisal
System (T-TESS & T-PESS). This new
system will be required of all districts in
2016-17.
Gunter ISD is considering
shifting to the new system in 2015-16 in
order to give teachers and principals time
to become familiar with the system while
it is in its “refinement” stage and not all
evaluative criteria is required. Dr. Siler
will be meeting with teachers to discuss
this option in early May prior to any
board action.
o Upcoming Meeting / Event Dates

Gunter Community Group - Spring Leadership Forum
April 28th marked the revival of a community group assembly for the town of Gunter.
The event was held in the GHS Commons, and began with many performances
from our talented choir students and the boy scouts presenting the colors. Michelle
Cook of “Fresh from My Oven” provided a table of savory and tasty food. L.D. Byrd
served as the host of the event, introducing each guest. The turn out for the event
was phenomenal!
Many leaders were brought together to report on city events and news. The line
up included County Commissioners Phyllis James & Jeff Whitmire; City Council Member, Larry Peters; GISD
Superintendent, Jill Siler; President of the Parks Foundation, Nancy Nevil; EDC Director, Laura Glass; and Chamber
President, Brandy Cochran.
The highlight of the evening was the keynote speaker, Don Godwin. Mr. Godwin spoke
highly about scholarships, and our efforts to give so many scholarships to our graduating
students here at GHS. Considered one of the most respected and tenacious trial lawyers
in Texas, you wouldn’t expect him to have come from a poor family. He is certainly
a man who worked hard to get where he is today. He shared his story of how other
people invested in him and helped him become who he is today. He challenged us as
individuals to be the person in somebody’s life who will be remembered as being an
important factor to their success.
In addition to his law career, Don Godwin is a well-renown real estate investor who has
invested heavily in the corridor from Dallas to the Red River including nearly 5,000 acres in Grayson County. In 2012,
Mr. Godwin purchased over 1,000 acres next to the Bridges in Gunter and is currently building a gorgeous home on
the property. We would like to be one of the first to say, “We are glad you will be calling Gunter your home!”

Our performance data is as high as it is
not because we focus on a test, but
because we have incredible teachers in
every classroom who know every child
and ensure that each student is
successful! The entire staff at Gunter

and inspire them to become the best
they can possibly be! And THAT is what
makes Gunter ISD high-performing!

Financial Update
Gunter ISD has made tremendous financial improvement over the past three years! Here are a few
markers of that progress:
Fund Balance
One of the strongest markers of financial progress
is our fund balance. In the past three years it has
increased from $475,000 to nearly $1.2 million,
reaching the state-required minimum for the first
time since 2008.
State Minimum
Enrollment
As we’ve talked about in the past, student
enrollment is the #1 factor in school finance. We closed the 2012 school year with 840 students. The
following year we lost 65 students and we were slated to lose another 50 in the following two years due
to smaller enrollments in kindergarten as well as the loss of the Tioga students when they opened their
High School. We have bounced back in 2015 but this is primarily due to transfer students. 18% of GISD’s
total population consists of transfer students. Those
students bring in over $1 million in additional
Enrollment

funding for the district. Transfer students have to
825
meet specific criteria to be accepted as a new
Actual
transfer student including standards in discipline,
800
attendance, and academic achievement. Our
775
transfer students travel from 18 surrounding districts

GISD is ACADEMICS!
Property Values
Property values are another factor in school funding
and our adjusted taxable values have declined $34
million over the past 5 years. This is most critical for
passing and selling bonds which pay for buildings,
technology, buses and the like. We still have $6
million remaining from our 2005 Bond that we are
unable to access due to lower property values.
There has been significant building in our area and
we are hoping to see increased values in 2015.

Expenditures
While each of the factors above impacted our overall revenue, we have also been extremely diligent in
our expenditures, decreasing our overall expenditures by $1.2 million in the past 5 years. Due
to increased enrollment, we are currently running a $200,000 surplus for this fiscal year.

GREAT Things in GISD!
I want to close by sharing some of the GREAT things going on in GISD! Our Early
Childhood Program is in full swing with our Head Start, Preschool and Pre-K
programs offering half-day and full-day programs for 3 and 4 year olds. In
addition, our After School Care Program offers afterschool care through 6pm
including homework assistance and structured games and activities for students
through 6th grade.
We are also in the midst of working with our high school students on their new
Graduation Plans which will allow them to choose an area of study and pursue
it in-depth through an endorsement. One of the endorsements that is growing
fast is in the area of STEM and we are adding a second Engineering Class and a
Computer Programming course to our offerings next year. We have published
an updated High School Course Catalog and have had individual meetings with
almost every current 8th grade student to plan out their high school career!
Part of those options now include over 83 hours of College Credit through AP
courses, Dual Credit courses and Tech Prep courses! That is a savings of up to
$4500 at the Community College level to over $40,000 at a private university.
It also allows students to be well on their way to an Associate’s Degree before
they finish high school.
And to help them achieve the rest of their degree, each student at Gunter can earn up to $7,000 of
scholarships through the Kerfoot Trust just by maintaining a quality GPA and full-time enrollment. The
Gunter ISD Education Foundation (GIFT) also awards nearly $30,000 annually in student scholarships
and campus grants as well as scholarships provided by our Booster Clubs and Gunter Tiger Fan Club.
Last year alone our 64 seniors earned over $750,000 in scholarships!
It is a GREAT day to be a Gunter Tiger! We encourage you to partner with us in helping to share the
good news of our students and staff as well as being a part of the action – from volunteering on a
campus to serving on a board for our boosters, PTO or foundations. Most of all, we want to earnestly
thank you for all of your support for our students, our staff and for our schools.

GHS fun photo opportunity! Mrs. Rogers rounded up
some help from some students to shuck the fresh corn she
was preparing for lunch. There were some students who
were nearby who had never shucked an ear of corn... that
amazed me!
