Dear Parents,
Welcome to Pechersk School International (PSI) and the 2015 / 2016 School Year!
At PSI we are proud of our vibrant and diverse international community. We educate just under 400 students between the ages of
3 and 18 from more than 40 different countries. Students joining PSI are quickly made to feel part of the school, with a sense of
being safe and cared for in a challenging and motivating learning environment. This strong commitment is the reason why our
school motto is “A Place Where We Belong”.
The learning experience at PSI is shaped by a spirit of community, whereby students, teachers and parents work together to
achieve our goals of creating independent learners and global citizens. PSI is an established successful IB World School offering
the three International Baccalaureate® (IB) programmes.
We hope that your children will become active, enquiring learners when they join the school community and that our well-qualified
and committed faculty, our small class sizes, and our teaching resources and facilities will support them in their own pursuit of
excellence. Our mission is to educate, inspire and challenge each student to realize his or her academic potential. We are always
seeking to raise student expectations and are always trying to ensure that every student has the best preparation for the future that
we can give them.
All of our students move on to higher education and invariably succeed within it. The challenges facing young people today require
thoughtful and creative responses. Critical thinking and study skills are an integral part of the academic curriculum and this, in turn,
is complemented by a wide range of extra-curricular activities.
Students are encouraged to explore their various abilities and interests to the full. Our after school programme gives students
access to a wide range of clubs and sports including overseas competitions, drama, music, student leadership roles and
community service activities.
The quality assurance we provide as a school committed to excellence also comes from our membership of the Council of
International Schools (CIS), Central and Eastern European Schools Association (CEESA) and the New England Association of
Schools and Colleges (NEASC).
The real warmth of the school -- the atmosphere of friendship combined with endeavour -- lies within the students and staff. This
can be appreciated best by visiting our school.
We look forward to welcoming you.

Dear New PSI Families,
We are thrilled you have chosen PSI as the school for your child/children. As a newcomer to the PSI family you will shortly feel
how much you really belong, just like my daughter and I did when we arrived. We hope you experience the warm smiles and
welcoming atmosphere that makes PSI a special place.
You have chosen an IB World School within which to educate your child. This approach to learning well prepares one for the everchanging world. The Primary Years Program addresses the social, physical, emotional, cultural and academic needs of the
learner, with the focus being on the heart, as well as, the mind. Central to all we do is the Learner Profile, the attributes that IB
learners strive to achieve. You will find this posted in all the classrooms and referred to almost daily. It will be helpful for you to
become familiar with the Learner Profile and the aims and values it identifies. Reading the relevant handbook carefully will help
you better understand and support your child’s progress.
For some, our approach to learning is very different from what you experienced as children. As a parent we ask that you become
an ‘inquirer’ (one of our Learner Profile words) by exploring and asking questions to clarify what we do in the classroom, and how
we do it! Over the course the year Michael Palmer (Assistant Principal and PYP Coordinator) and I will be hosting workshops and
coffee mornings to answer your questions. Between the two of us we might be able to answer some questions in Ukrainian or
Russian!
I look forward to getting to know you and your children over the course of the year. Should you have any questions please do not
hesitate to stop by my office or send me an email ([email protected]).

Dear New PSI Families,
Welcome to Pechersk School International! I will start my 7th year at PSI in August and can honestly tell you that I am still pleased
and impressed with the friendliness and support I receive from parents, students and staff. I believe the school really is a ‘place
where we belong.’
After sixteen years of working in international schools, I know that the move to a new country and a new school can be challenging,
especially for young people. Please be prepared for some great days and some not-so-great days as your children adjust to their
new teachers, classmates, school and living environment. Please feel free to contact the school counselor, the teachers or me if
you need our help as your family makes this adjustment.
It’s important that you understand that we are all in this together. We will work hard to be partners in your child’s education, and
sincerely hope that you will work with us to support your children as they learn and grow. I encourage you to ask questions and to
attend meetings, Open House, parent conferences and other school events to get to know our school community. I hope that you
will be able to offer some time to our PTA, a dedicated group of parent volunteers who support our school in a number of ways.
Please also log in early and often to our Veracross system so that you have on-going information about what your child is learning
and how s/he’s learning it.
I look forward to meeting you and your children in August and to working together to make your transition to PSI as smooth as
possible. If there’s anything I can to help with that, please don’t hesitate to ask.
Welcome!

PROVEN ACADEMIC SUCCESS
Points of Difference - Why Families Choose PSI
A Non Profit School
PSI is a diverse and friendly international school serving 43 nationalities in the Kyiv community. It is the largest non-profit, school in
Ukraine, with a parent-elected Board leading the School. The learning experience at PSI is shaped by a spirit of community, with
teachers, students and parents working together to achieve academic goals and creating successful, independent learners and
global citizens.
International Accreditations
PSI is the only school in Ukraine, which holds dual international school accreditation. Since 2003 our school has received
accredited member status from two premier accreditation organisations: the Council of International Schools (CIS) in Europe and
the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) in the United States. This means that our School’s philosophy,
governance, curriculum, resources and staffing meet rigorous standards set by these international school organisations. The
School was recently renewed for five years (through 2017) - the longest period of accreditation granted.
IB World School Status
PSI holds the prestigious IB World School status. We are the only school in Kyiv fully authorised to teach all three International
Baccalaureate® (IB) programmes. This is only possible after a rigorous process of application and regular review for quality
assurance. As a member school of the IB global learning community, we share a common commitment to the goals and standards
of the International Baccalaureate, which complements those of PSI.
The three programs - Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme and Diploma Programme - encourage students’
academic advancement as well as promoting their development as active and compassionate community members.
External Assessment Programme
PSI is the only school in Kyiv and Ukraine to offer four international assessment programmes. Each year PSI students sit ‘best
practice’ assessments and examinations alongside international school students in over 100 countries. Students in Grades 3 - 8
engage in MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) and ISA (International School Assessments) assessments. Grade 11 students sit
the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (Grade 11), an important part of their college application process. Finally, Grade 12
students sit the IB Diploma examinations. Results are used to check students’ achievement at a grade level and also to measure
their learning growth rate. Over time and multiple assessments, the results are plotted and can be evaluated on a ‘development
continuum’. Data is also used by schools to review teaching and learning programmes and to modify the curriculum to meet the
needs of individual students, a class or grade level accordingly.
Teacher Selection & Qualifications
PSI teachers are appointed by the school Director and Principals specifically to match our students, learning programmes and the
development goals of the school. All teachers are fully certified in their areas of instruction. PSI teachers hold Bachelor’s Degrees
with 72 % holding advanced degrees, ranging from Masters to PhDs. PSI works directly with the three major international teacher
placement organisations to ensure that all candidates have met a rigorous standard are accepted by the School. In addition, PSI
places a high value on professional development of teachers, and provides opportunities for teachers to receive International
Baccalaureate training, attend regional conferences and work toward higher degrees.
