his official role as head of state.
Schönbrunn Palace is presenting Franz
Joseph the Man & Monarch, an exhibition that delves into the emperor’s
character, his forebears and offspring,
his childhood and upbringing and the
defining moments in his life.
The exhibition at Schloss Niederweiden in Lower Austria is devoted

to Franz Joseph’s private passion for
hunting, it provides a fascinating insight
into the Habsburg hunting grounds. ◀

SKB and the Marchfeld Palaces
Schloß Schönbrunn Kultur- und Betriebsges.m.b.H.
and the Marchfeld Palaces merge
With retroactive effect from 1 January
2015 Schloß Schönbrunn Kultur- und
Betriebsges.m.b.H. (SKB) has merged with
Marchfeldschlösser Revitalisierungs- und
Betriebsgesellschaft (MRBG), which had
been a subsidiary of SKB since 2012.
According to CEO Franz Sattlecker the
original
reorganisation
ushered
in
a
positive new era: “The Marchfeld Palaces
have reported a ten percent increase in
visitor numbers over the past two years.”
The merger is expected to leverage several
synergies between the organisations, by
aligning the tourism concepts for the
locations in Vienna and Lower Austria to
reach out to even more potential visitors.
There are other advantages, too, when it
comes to refurbishments: SKB’s know-how
will be utilised in a current and upcoming
investment programme which runs into tens
of millions of euros.
Schloss Hof
T
ours of the palace and the
winter exhibition about families
during the First World War give
a special insight into a long-forgotten
era. For the first time this year, the
orangery will be open in winter as well
as the palace. The exotic plants in this
Baroque glasshouse will whisk visitors
away to another world as temperatures
plummet outdoors. Guests can sit and
watch the world go by from the comfort
of bespoke furnishings as the snow
gently falls to the ground.
On the five weekends before 24
December, a Christmas village provides
the perfect chance for visitors to get

into the yuletide spirit, with a series
of guided tours and concerts among
the attractions. Schloss Hof is also
the perfect destination for a spring
excursion – an Easter Market will get
the new season off to a glittering start
over the two weekends of March before
Easter.

Schloss Hof will be opening its doors once
again in winter 2015/16: from 7 November to
6 March visitors of all ages can look forward
to a packed programme on weekends and
public holidays.
Schönbrunn Zoo
With work completed on the new polar bear enclosure at
Schönbrunn Zoo, the team immediately got started on its
next attraction: the new giraffe park which
will be ready by spring 2017 at the latest.
Visitor highlight: you will be able to see
the giraffes at tree-top height.

chönbrunn Zoo
has a proud tradition of keeping
giraffes, with the first
creatures brought to Vienna back in
1828. They were given to the Austrian
emperor as a diplomatic gift by the
Egyptian viceroy. The animals were
greeted enthusiastically, and today,
almost 200 years later, the giraffes are
still a firm favourite among visitors.
Currently located in a historic part of
the zoo, the giraffe enclosure is the
only part not to have been renovated.
The zoo is part of the UNESCO World
Heritage Site of Schönbrunn and
this project will be completed in line
with the criteria applied to protected
buildings. Schönbrunn is a genuinely
unique experience thanks to its
Baroque architecture and state-of-theart approach to wild animal keeping.

The light and airy winter quarters will
feature a three-metre-high gallery so
that visitors can see the animals – which
grow up to five metres tall – at tree-top
level. In all, the new indoor section will
be three times the size of the old one.
A spacious outdoor area will provide
ample room for the quartet to stretch
their legs.
The giraffes will spend their time at a
temporary location close to the zoo
while they wait for the new park to be
completed. In fact, when the animals
are outside they can be seen from the
zoo car park on Seckendorff-GudentWeg. ◀

for eleven days.
The Haydn Days take place at its original venues,
namely the Haydn Hall of the Esterházy Palace. With its
outstanding acoustics, the concert hall is ranked one of
the finest in the world and constituting a stylish setting for
the musical life of Eisenstadt, the city of Haydn.
The entire works of the genius loci Joseph Haydn is always at
the heart of the Haydn Festival. In 2016, this musical focus is
framed by the works of famous composers from the Bohemian
Crownland of the Habsburg Monarchy. This is to show relationship, offer a comparison and contrast of Haydn’s works to their

In the early twentieth century, the traditional relationship
between the sexes was challenged by a number of social,
economic, and philosophical changes.
Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, and Oskar Kokoschka – then the
three most outstanding painters of Viennese modernism –
approached the subject matter generally referred to as the
‘woman question’ from slightly different, albeit overlapping
perspectives. The exhibition will present an in-depth exploration of these differences and similarities. Providing insights
into the relationship between the sexes in the early twentieth
centuries, the show will elaborate on the origins of a modern
sexual identity.
