AOSSM SPECIALTY DAY PROGRAM
DESCRIPTION
This live activity is designed to identify areas of recent research in the field of orthopaedic sports
medicine and arthroscopy relevant to practicing physicians, surgeons, and allied health professionals.
This information will be transmitted through scientific research, faculty/participant interaction, spotlights
on surgical techniques, symposia, and debates.
PROGRAM
The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine attests that the people responsible for the
development of this educational activity did so independently and were not influenced by commercial
supporters.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this educational activity, learners should be able to:
 Identify recent research in the field of orthopaedic sports medicine
 Evaluate orthopaedic sports medicine diagnostic, surgical, non-operative, and other therapeutic
measures and techniques
 Recognize specific topical problems endemic to the orthopaedic sports medicine practitioner
 Describe recent developments in the rapidly changing field of orthopaedic sports medicine
 Apply strategies to improve patient outcomes

American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. The lecture series is supported by a Kennedy
Family Endowment and The American Journal of Sports Medicine.
Christopher D. Harner MD
2016 Distinguished Lecturer
Christopher D. Harner MD, is a professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
at The University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. In addition, he serves
as the Vice Chair of Academic Affairs for the department and the Program Director
of the Sports Medicine Fellowship. He has a long history of clinical and basic science
research. Throughout the course of Dr. Harner’s basic science research career, he has
educated more than 100 undergraduate, graduate, and medical students, residents
and fellows.
Dr. Harner’s clinical and academic leadership in sports medicine is evidenced by
numerous grants, awards and published scientific articles in clinical and research
journals. Awards for his research include the Cabaud Award (1999 & 2003) and the
Excellence in Research Award (1994 & 2002) from the AOSSM, the Hughston Best
Paper Award by AJSM (2000), the John Joyce Award from ISAKOS (2001 & 2002), the Compere Award from the
Twentieth Century Club (2004), the Rovere Award from AOSSM (2009), and the O’Donoghue Sports Injury Award
from AOSSM in 2011.
His dedication to orthopaedics and sports medicine is marked by his commitment to research and education.
He consistently has been named among The Best Doctors in America: Northeast Region. He is a Past President
of AOSSM and has served on the education committees for both AOSSM and the Arthroscopy Association of
North America (AANA). He has also served as a member of both the AOSSM Board of Directors and the ISAKOS
Executive Committee.
In addition, Dr. Harner is a member of the editorial review boards for numerous orthopaedic, sports medicine, and
scientific journals. He served as Program Chair for the Combined AOA / COA Meeting in July 2007 in Quebec City
and for the AOSSM Annual Meeting in July 2009 in Keystone, CO.
In 2000, he was appointed to an 11-year term on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Orthopaedic
Surgery (ABOS). Dr. Harner has played a key role in sports medicine certification serving as Chairman of the
Subspecialty Certification Committee. In addition to his ABOS commitments, he was appointed to a two-year
term on the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Board of Directors as a Member-at-Large in
February 2007.
Dr. Harner graduated with high honors from Michigan State University. In 1981, he earned his medical degree
from the University of Michigan and went on to do his orthopaedic residency at the University of Pittsburgh.
He completed his sports medicine fellowship in Salt Lake City in 1987 and joined the full time faculty at the
University of Pittsburgh later that same year. In 1990, he was selected as an ESSKA-AOSSM Sports Medicine
Travelling Fellow and visited more than 20 sports medicine centers throughout Europe.
Dr. Harner and his wife, Cindy, have been married for 33 years and reside in the Houston area. They have
three children: Christopher (age 26), Andrew (age 24), and Nina (age 22).

This lectureship is named in honor of John C. Kennedy MD, FRCS(C), a past president of the American Orthopaedic
Society for Sports Medicine. The lecture series is supported by a Kennedy Family Endowment and The American
Journal of Sports Medicine.
John C. Kennedy MD, FRCS(C)
1917 – 1983
John C. Kennedy MD, FRCS(C) was a distinguished leader in the field of orthopaedic sports
medicine. Born and raised in London, Ontario, Canada, Dr. Kennedy attended the University
of Western Ontario where he obtained his medical degree in 1942. While at the university, he
also continued his avid interest in sports, excelling in football and basketball. After completing
his internship, Dr. Kennedy served as a medical officer in the Royal Canadian Navy. In 1943
Dr. Kennedy married Jean Lawson. The Kennedys have five children and 13 grandchildren.
After World War II, Dr. Kennedy took surgical training at the University of Western Ontario and
obtained his FRCS(C) in general surgery. He then studied orthopaedics in Toronto under R. I. Harris. He obtained his
FRCS(C) in orthopaedic surgery in 1950 and returned to London as an instructor in surgery. He eventually became a
Clinical Professor and Chief of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery. He held those positions until 1981.
