New club at The Cool Docks shows
early promise
Let the right Juan in The former drug-addict and rock
guitarist found his stride as one half of disco-house
duo The Juan MacLean with singer Nancy Wang.
Juan MacLean
NIGHT OF THE MONTH
Part two of DJ Razor’s DFA affair –
this time at The Shelter
Look who’s having himself a year.
Not just one DFA Records grandee on
his watch, but two. James Murphy in
September and, now, care of the ever
more sure-footed DJ-promoter Razor,
Juan MacLean, too.
One of the founding signees of
the taste-setting DFA imprint as one
half of vocal-disco duo The Juan
MacLean, his gig will nonetheless
be distinct from Murphy’s. If for no
other reason than it’s at The Shelter,
so far less likely to be shut down by
the cops (although never rule it out
altogether). ‘My sets are definitely a
bit different from James’s,’ he tells
us from New York. ‘I tend to play
a more late-night, deep, dark-vibe
type of set meant for dancing to for
hours on end. I’m definitely of the old-
school house school, taking things
up and down, back and forth, from
deep to up-front, for the course of a
night. And I play a lot of new-school,
melodic, deep, tech-y house, lots of
stuff with vocals,’ he continues. ‘I’ve
never really been a disco DJ so I don’t
get into that world at all.’
MacLean is an early standardbearer of a post-house sound that’s
seen a massive global swell recently.
How does he feel about the cheap
copycatting? ‘For years I was playing
old-school house with lots of diva
vocals and melody, and even when
disco was The Big Thing I’d get a lot of
resistance to it from hipster crowds
in particular – now it’s everywhere,’
he says. ‘But it would be too easy to
be cynical about everyone jumping on
the house bandwagon; for me, it’s a
great time [in dance music],’ he adds.
‘Basically, the sound I have always
loved the most is now dominating the
clubs. Sure, there are lots of people
just lazily getting into it. But that’s
OK. Quality always stands out.’
So he’s content with the state
of dance music right now? ‘In
some ways, it’s what we dreamed
of in the beginning of DFA. Dance
music moved into a more melodic,
song-oriented sound, taking lots of
cues from live music forms again,’
he explains. ‘It’s also permeated
mainstream culture – though, as
usual, the mainstream has ended
up with the dumbest examples of the
genre.’ There’s still lots of innovation
in the underground, he says. ‘And
lots of music I’m excited about on
a regular basis. I still love DJing as
much as I ever did – maybe, right
now, even more than I ever have.’

❋ Incoming Bar Rouge’s Eighth Birthday
What is it? Birthdays on The Bund
always mean a bit of hullabaloo and
if anyone can be relied upon to go
bonkers, it’s Bar Rouge. This year
it’s a three-night affair, opening
Thursday night with a free-drink
party for girls and closing with a
‘storm of Champagne rain’ on
Saturday (it’s a surprise, they
wouldn’t elaborate).
Who’s playing?
If there’s
any justice,
though, longstanding
French
disco dandy
Dimitri from
Paris will prove
the biggest draw
(playing Friday 23).
An unrelenting
revisionist and
marshal of vintage dance sounds,
he released a surprisingly on-trend
Back in the House compilation
for Defected this year. More
interestingly, though, was
2010 release Get Down
to the Philly Sound, with
which he made the case
that disco in fact arrived
via Philadelphia, not
New York. On it are tracks
such as Howard Melvin &
The Blue Notes’s ‘The
Love I Lost’ (the song
he reckons is the
first ever disco
song) as well
as some more
obscure reveals
of the Philly
disco sound
such as Philly
Devotion’s
‘Hurt So Bad’ and Teddy Pendergrass’s
‘The More I Get the More I Want’ (find it
online, it’s well worth a listen).
And that’s the point of Dimitri from
Paris and what makes him such a
shrewd booking for this party. He
plays music that makes sense to
people who don’t care about music,
as well pushing more storied,
recherché tracks that please the
discoheads. ‘When I’m playing in a
club I have to seduce [the crowd] into
my groove,’ he said in an interview
earlier this year. ‘I don’t want to scare
them away – I don’t want to say, “Well
this is what I play, take it or leave
it”– because the chances are they’ll
leave it,’ he continues. ‘You have to
draw people into your universe.’ AB
Might Virgo be The Cool Docks’s first
decent club? Wait, Kebabs on the
Grille aside, might Virgo be The Cool
Docks’s first decent anything? The
answer for now, of course, is a nice
and safe ‘depends’. But it certainly
shows potential.
The owner is Denny Goa, a smalltime nightlife baron from Beijing who
also owns cheesy rooftop bar-club
Kokomo in the capital’s Chaoyang
district. Bartender Jackson Bai,
also from Beijing, will run the bar.
They’re got some novel ideas here.
Decent drinks at dive-bar prices in
a proper grown-up club – nice. Spirit
and mixers are 30RMB, a cocktail
is 50RMB (and, until the end of the
November, all drinks are buy one
get one free until midnight and,
yes, they have been tested, and,
no, we didn’t wake up with a wildly
disproportionate hangover to the
amount we sunk).
There’s an in-house, clay pizza
oven too, with a full-time pizzaoli
making passable, skinny-crust pies
from around 70RMB. The decor
isn’t antagonising, which at times
is really the best you can hope for,
but here there’s a warm, gold-amber
hue, with an attractive bar area with
a pole at the end for exotic dances.
Downstairs, there’s a commendable
balance between pleather seating
and dancefloor. Upstairs, there’s a
secret, or not so secret, third floor,
centred with an island bar and a tired,
all-white interior that looks as if its
been bought at a clearance sale on a
Greek party island.
But why doesn’t any of this
matter? Because it’s at The Cool
Docks, of course. And, unless, say,
TICT are doing something at Wharf
1846 (DAFF, for instance), nobody
really goes there. The ‘depends’ bit,
then, hangs on whether Virgo can
attract the right kind of promoters
to lend the place some cache (as
Ibiza has done with STD) and throw
a decent party (they’re talking to City
Moments, I Love Shanghai and Diem
Noctem). Because Virgo is an OK
club; the bricks and mortar are there.
Its launch night was packed. So
everyone knows it’s open. Now they
just need a reason to go back. AB
