Called To Be Witnesses
Bereavement Ministry
Thomas probably would be a good
man to have in your corner in a
modern-day courtroom. Even
though he was willing to follow
Jesus to death (John 11:16), he’s
not going to go out into the world
now and attempt to give witness to
the risen Christ when all he has at
his disposal is hearsay evidence
from the other apostles. No, he
wants immediate evidence, a handson experience of Christ risen and
present. The risen Christ ultimately
provides Thomas with the experience and evidence he needs.
Love and concern for the suffering and sorrowful have always been a tradition of
Jesus’ life. In the Gospels we see over and over again how those afflicted sought
Christ’s healing presence.
Many of us, when we struggle with
our faith or our belief, can identify
with Thomas. But even when our
faith is in relatively solid shape, we
encounter people who are a bit like
Thomas, who won’t believe unless
they are given credible experience
of the risen Christ. We, then, are
called to be witnesses. Like Christ,
we cannot be ashamed to show the
woundedness of the Body of Christ,
the Church. We must even allow
others to probe and examine the
wounds. But we must also greet
them with “Peace” and know that,
in the glorious everlasting life of
Christ risen from the dead, our
wounds are not our final destiny.
Our final joy is life transformed for
eternity.
This same gift of compassionate healing presence is alive in our church today.
One of the ways we are present to our fellow parishioners here at St. Juliana is
through our Bereavement Ministry. Bereavement Ministry, by its very nature,
offers unlimited opportunities to assist with those who have lost a loved one.
Our Bereavement Ministers offer a healing presence to fellow parishioners. This
ministry is St. Juliana’s way to offer support to those members who have suffered the loss of a loved one through death.
The Bereavement Minister is the contact between St. Juliana Parish and the bereaved family. Once we are notified of a funeral, one of our Bereavement Ministers is contacted. The Bereavement Minister calls upon the Spouse or family
member of the deceased and asks what help they can be in planning the funeral
liturgy. The bereaved are also asked what other needs they may have. The Bereavement minister is the presence of our faith community to these families.
After they have finished helping a family plan a funeral liturgy and if there are
any special needs, all information is brought back to St. Juliana.
Many funeral liturgies are said here each year and the need for more Bereavement Ministers grows. If this ministry touches your heart and you would like
more information, please call Joyce Browne at the Parish Business Office,
773.631.4127.

Do you always sit underneath a speaker in church hoping to hear the priest
more clearly?
Do you wish that there were a way to boost the sound in Church just for
you?
If you or someone you know in the parish might be interested in trying this system during one of the masses on April 17th and18th through May 15th and

or [email protected]. You may also speak to Margie before or after mass for
more information.
Pastoral Council Mission Statement
Bridget Kathleen Jackson, daughter of
John Jackson and Kathleen Sullivan
The St. Juliana Parish Pastoral Council is an enthusiastic, compassionate, faithfilled community participating in the ministry of the Church.
Grace Elizabeth O’Toole, daughter of
Martin and Catherine (Rydecki)
O’Toole
We are witnesses of the Good News, and through example and prayer we live
the Gospel message.
Daniel Joseph Sullivan, son of Joseph
& Siobhan (McKenna) Sullivan
“I baptize you
In the name of the father and
the son and the holy spirit, Amen.”
Through active listening we strive to determine and understand the diverse needs
of our parish and community. We minister to these needs by inviting and
empowering others to become involved in meeting the spiritual, temporal and
social needs of all.
We partner with the Pastor and Staff to support existing parish life, to create
vision, and to plan for the future.
St. Bernadette Soubirous ((1844-1879) - April 16
I Richard James Jankowski &
Tara Noel Turney
With Immaculate Mary’s “Ave Maria” for its refrain, Andy Williams’ “Village of
Saint Bernadette” peaked at #7 on Billboard’s Top 40 at Christmas 1959, airing
on radio stations all over America. Imagine! In some dioceses, today marks the
feast of Bernardette Soubirous, the teenager who, combing a refuse heap for firewood, saw a “beautiful lady” who identified herself in words Bernadette faithfully
reported to the bishop, though she did not understand their meaning: “I am the
Immaculate Conception.” Relentlessly interrogated, she never wavered in her
story or sweetness. Chronically ill all her life and dead at thirty-five, Bernadette
left behind the shrine at Lourdes where healing waters still flow from the spring
that her “beautiful lady” pointed out to her.

St. Juliana School Volunteer Dinner
Administration, faculty, and students are always grateful to the wonderful volunteers who so generously give of their time to help at St. Juliana
School. On Thursday, March 11th, Volunteer Appreciation Dinner was
held in the St. Juliana School Hall. This buffet dinner included a smorgasbord of casseroles, salads, and desserts prepared by the teachers, staff
and administration of St. Juliana School.
The theme for the 2010 Volunteer Dinner was based on the recent
Olympic Games in Vancouver and each table was decorated by the students to represent a country. The volunteers and teachers participated in
friendly competitions, modified versions of hockey, cross country skiing,
speed skating relay race, and curling. Winning teams received gold medals for their efforts presented by St. Juliana School principal,
Kathleen Barton. At the end of the evening each volunteer
received a small gift bearing the inscription “St. Juliana Volunteers, Thank You for Carrying Our Torch!”

Kindergarten Celebrates
100 Days of School
On February 8th, the children in
Kindergarten celebrated the 100th
day of school. Special activities
marked the occasion. On that day
kindergarten students created
charts of 100 things. They wore
special headbands to celebrate the
day. At home, each Kindergarten
student decorated a T-shirt with
100 items on it, and on 100 Day
they all proudly wore their 100
Day shirts. Special guest for the day
was Zero the Hero!
