Chris Rigby
Between Rocks
and Hard Places
Bonhoga Gallery
28 February - 12 April
Chris Rigby is a landscape
painter whose work
embraces the physical
process of representing the
nature of things. The work
in this exhibition follows on
from his 2012 exhibition 30
Days of Light at Shetland
Museum and Archives and
represents a deepening
of his relationship with
Shetland. During a wet and
windy five week stay last
year he returned to explore
much that he had missed the
first time round while making
further exciting discoveries in
his favourite locations such
as Muckle Roe.

Upper Foyer,
Mareel
Julie Dennison is currently
a full time student in the
first year of her BA (Hons)
Contemporary Textiles at
Shetland College UHI. The
majority of these woodcut
prints were created when
she studied NC Art and
Design between August 2013
and July 2014. She really took
to creating woodcuts during
the printmaking module and,
under Paul Bloomer’s tuition
and support, thrived on it
and has continued to create
illustrative prints featuring
landscapes and recognisable
Shetland scenes. A number
of prints feature a recurring
character, a grouchy
Shetland fisherman named
Tammie o’ Stova, who
features in a story which
Julie is yet to write.
Work is for sale.

FILM
The Interview (15)
Don’t miss this opportunity to see
the film they tried to ban on the big
screen. Dave Skylark (James Franco)
and his producer Aaron Rapoport
(Seth Rogen) run the popular
celebrity tabloid TV show “Skylark
Tonight”. When they discover that
North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un
is a fan of the show, they land an
interview with him in an attempt to
legitimize themselves as journalists.
As Dave and Aaron prepare to
travel to Pyongyang, their plans
change when the CIA recruits them,
perhaps the two least-qualified
men imaginable, to assassinate
Kim Jong-un.
It Follows (15)
After a strange sexual encounter,
a teenager finds herself haunted
by nightmarish visions and the
inescapable sense that something
is after her.
Me, Myself
and Mum (15)
French language film with English
subtitles. Showing as part of LGBT
History Month. The French comedian
Guillaume Gallienne brings his
autobiographical one man show to
the big screen in this quirky twist on
a traditional coming out tale. Raised
by his domineering mother as the
daughter she never had, effeminate
and theatrical, everyone around him
assumes Guillaume is gay. Little
by little, through a series of painful
experiences, Guillaume comes to
discover who he really is, and is
finally able to break free from his
mother’s controlling influence.

The Hobbit:
The Battle of the
Five Armies (12A)
The conclusion of Peter Jackson’s
epic trilogy, starring Martin Freeman,
Richard Armitage and Sir Ian McKellen.
The Hobbit: The Battle of the
Five Armies brings to a close the
adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin
Oakenshield and the Company of
Dwarves. Having reclaimed Erebor
and vast treasure from the dragon
Smaug, Thorin Oakenshield sacrifices
friendship and honor in seeking the
Arkenstone, despite Smaug’s fiery
wrath and desperate attempts by the
Hobbit Bilbo to make him see reason.

American Sniper (15)
U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle (Bradley
Cooper) takes his sole mission - to
protect his comrades - and becomes
one of the most lethal snipers
in American history. His pinpoint
accuracy not only saves countless
lives but also makes him a prime
target of insurgents. Despite grave
danger and his struggle to be a good
husband and father to his family
back in the States, Kyle serves four
tours of duty in Iraq. However, when
he finally returns home, he finds
that he cannot leave the war behind.
American Sniper marks director Clint
Eastwood’s return to violence, and
especially the gun-related violence
that’s hallmarked his greatest films.
The Second Best
Exotic Marigold
Hotel (PG)
The sequel to the highly successful
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
8 months on and the hotel is full
to bursting. Co-managers Muriel
Donnelly (Maggie Smith) and Sonny
Kapoor (Dev Patel) have a dream of
expansion, and they’ve found just
the place: ‘The Second Best Exotic
Marigold Hotel’. But plans for a
traditional Indian wedding threaten
to derail the process.
The Sound of
Music (U)
Sunday 15 March
Treat your Mum this Mother’s Day
with this timeless musical classic. A
tuneful, heartwarming story based
on the real life story of the Von
Trapp Family singers, one of the
world’s best-known concert groups
in the era immediately preceding
World War II. Julie Andrews plays
the role of Maria, the tomboyish
postulant at an Austrian abbey who
becomes a governess in the home of
a widowed naval captain with seven
children, and brings a new love of
life and music into the home.
Taken 3 (12A)
Ex-government operative Bryan
Mills (Liam Neeson) finds his life is
shattered when he’s falsely accused
of a murder that hits close to home.
Pursued by a savvy police inspector,
Mills employs his particular set of
skills to track the real killer and
exact justice.

RECORDING STUDIO
“The staff and facilities are completely first class
and made everything so straightforward. We were
delighted with the experience and with the final
album. Before the recording sessions I had visions
of a very cold and clinical atmosphere recording in a
professional studio yet recording in Mareel was one of
the most relaxing and fun parts of the whole recordmaking process.”
- Lewie Peterson, The Revellers
The Revellers album, Renegades, is available to purchase from Mareel.
Mareel’s recording studio is an
excellent facility for Shetland’s
many talented musicians and
visiting artists alike. Comprising
a ProTools HDX system, great
mic selection and three
distinct recording spaces, the
studio provides the perfect
environment for recording
artists.
The studio has full digital
connectivity to the Auditorium,
and is capable of recording live
events, from lectures to concerts.

Sunday 1 March @ 1.40pm
From London’s West End - Richard Armitage
stars in Arthur Miller’s classic American
drama brought vividly to life in this visceral
new production by internationally acclaimed
director Yaël Farber.
In a small tight-knit community in Salem,
Massachusetts, personal grievances collide with lust
and superstition, fuelling widespread hysteria. Miller’s timeless parable attacks the evils
of mindless persecution and the terrifying power of false accusations.
Yaël Farber is a multiple award-winning director and playwright. Her production of Mies
Julie won a string of international awards at the 2012 Edinburgh Festival, was named
one of the Top Ten Productions of 2012 by The New York Times, and Top Five Productions
of 2012 by The Guardian.

Sunday 29 March
Love’s Labour’s Lost is a comedy
about young love, with an
unexpected and unsettling ending.
Summer 1914. In order to dedicate
themselves to a life of study, the
King and his friends take an oath to
avoid the company of women for three
years. No sooner have they made their
idealistic pledge than the Princess of
France and her ladies-in-waiting arrive,
presenting the men with a severe test of
their high-minded resolve.
Shakespeare’s sparkling comedy delights in championing and then unravelling an unrealistic
vow, and mischievously suggests that the study of the opposite sex is in fact the highest of
all academic endeavours. Only at the end of the play is the merriment curtailed as the lovers
agree to submit to a period apart, unaware that the world around them is about to be utterly
transformed by the war to end all wars.

Cinema Paradiso (PG)

friend who was the projectionist at the local cinema
throughout his childhood.
A Most Violent Year (15)
Love Is Strange (15)
11 March
25 March
Set in New York during the winter of 1981, statistically
one of the most violent years in the city’s history, A
Most Violent Year follows the lives of immigrant Abel
Morales (Oscar Isaac – Inside Llewyn Davies, Ex Machina)
and his family as they try to expand their business and
capitalise on the American Dream, while the rampant
violence and corruption of the day threatens to drag
them down and destroy all they have built.
After nearly four decades together, Ben (John Lithgow)
and George (Alfred Molina) finally tie the knot in an
idyllic wedding ceremony in lower Manhattan. But when
George loses his job soon after, the couple must sell
their apartment and - victims of the relentless New
York City real estate market - temporarily live apart until
they can find an affordable new home. Forced to stay
with neighbours and relations, Ben and George struggle
with the pain of separation, whilst simultaneously
facing the challenges of the intergenerational tensions
and capricious family dynamics of their new living
arrangements.
Kumiko:
The Treasure Hunter (12a)
18 March
In this darkly comedic odyssey, Academy Award
nominee Rinko Kikuchi (Babel, Pacific Rim) stars
as Kumiko, a frustrated Office Lady whose
imagination transcends the confines of her
mundane life. Kumiko becomes obsessed with
a mysterious, battered VHS tape
of a popular film she’s mistaken
for a documentary, fixating on a
scene where a suitcase of stolen
cash is buried in the desolate,
frozen landscape of North Dakota.
Believing this treasure to be real,
she leaves behind Tokyo and her
beloved rabbit Bunzo to recover it
- and finds herself on a dangerous
adventure unlike anything she’s
seen in the movies.
Still Life (15)
1 April
Life for the unassuming John May (Eddie Marsan) has
always revolved around his work for the local
council in South London, finding the next of
kin of those who have died alone. Profoundly
dedicated to his work, he believes that
everyone deserves a dignified exit, and writes
eulogies and organises funerals for those
who wouldn’t have them otherwise. But when
a new case - an elderly alcoholic in a
flat directly opposite his own - hits
him harder than usual, he journeys
outside London to track down the
man’s long-abandoned daughter
(Joanne Froggatt, Downton
Abbey). Against the odds, the two
lonely souls are drawn to each
other - and John’s outlook starts
to open to life’s possibilities.

Arts and Wellbeing
The Annsbrae Just Writing Group had its 10th anniversary in
September 2013. It was started by Shetland Arts Trust and
The Community Mental Health Team and continues to be
supported by Shetland Arts.
The group meets weekly, offering a space for people who are
experiencing ongoing mental health issues to come and take
part in creative writing and spend time together. There is no
pressure for anybody to write, or to share what they have
written with the rest of the group.
The aim of the group has always been to enjoy writing and
to enjoy sharing their writing. Here are some quotes from
members, which express what they feel about writing and
why they value the group.
“Made me read more widely.”
“Made me more observant.”
“Kept me alive.”
“Taught me to dream.”
“Given me confidence to read in public.”
“Helped me to express my feelings: both good and bad.”
“Made me more analytical of the papers and books I read.”
“Made me friends who I can share how I feel with.”
“Given me friends who I help and who help me.”
“Given me confidence to write for an audience.”
“Helped me explore my emotions.”
“Helped me understand other people better.”
“Writing helps me relax, it lets me say what I feel
without hurting me or anyone else.”

Shetland Arts Development Agency manages Bonhoga Gallery,
the Garrison Theatre & Mareel. We also develop and promote a year round
programme of film, music, theatre, literature, visual arts, & dance events.
We do this because we want to see Shetland celebrated as a place where inspiration
& innovation are valued; where people want to live, work & study;
and we want the full social & economic potential of the islands to be achieved.
Shetland Arts is supported by Creative Scotland and core funded by the
Shetland Charitable Trust. Shetland Arts is a registered charity (SCO37082).
