Montgomery County is ideally located in the mid-Atlantic region with direct access to I-81 as well as close proximity to I-77
and I-64. The county is within a day’s drive of two-thirds of the
nation’s population. We are an emerging high-tech community
and home to one of the nation’s leading education institutions
and research universities in Virginia Tech. Additionally, Virginia Tech’s Corporate Research Center is a research/business
park that serves as a catalyst for the region’s high-tech industry
cluster.

ontgomery County is the heart
of the New River Valley region of
southwest Virginia. It’s home to
diverse local arts, culture, and historic
sites, entrepreneurial and educational
opportunities, topnotch health care, and
a wide range of outdoor recreational
activities. Montgomery County affords
its residents and visitors a unique and
vibrant mix of possibilities; the diversity
of its two major population centers,
Blacksburg and Christiansburg, is one
of its greatest strengths.
Christiansburg
Christiansburg, the County seat, is also
home to the Christiansburg Aquatic Center, opened
in 2010. The Christiansburg Recreational Center and
the Harkrader Sports Complex (host of the World
Championship Little League games in 2010) provide
multiple recreational opportunities for everyone
from physical fitness fanatics to pee wee basketball
players.
The third Saturday of every September sees the
celebration of the Wilderness Festival: Christiansburg
still has an outstanding warrant for the arrest of Daniel
Boone, who stopped to visit his friend Davy Crockett
in Christiansburg and left a debt to local residents
unpaid. Residents’ pride in their local history is further
evident in Christiansburg’s historic Cambria District,
and many residents choose Christiansburg to live in
because of the availability, affordability, and charm of

Blacksburg
Blacksburg is a small town with a big heart.
Founded in 1798 by William Black, its current population
of approximately 15,000 swells to over 40,000 with Virginia
Tech’s undergraduate and graduate students. Many of the
original structures included in Black’s “Sixteen Squares” of
Blacksburg remain in use, repurposed for museums (Historic
Smithfield Plantation, Solitude) restaurants (River Mill
building), or art galleries (the Armory).
The Huckleberry Trail, once a rail line, now provides
a green commuter option, training ground for runners and
bikers, or a pleasant stroll – nearly six miles connecting
Blacksburg and Christiansburg are open to the public,
with additional portions in the process of being developed.
Blacksburg’s mix of academia, entrepreneurs and small town
character make it an attractive place to live, work and play.
Montgomery County also sustains several
smaller rural communities, like Elliston, Riner and
Shawsville. They provide not only a respite from the
busy-ness of Blacksburg and Christiansburg, but also
unique businesses, historic interests and scenic vistas
for tourists of all stripes: bikers, motorists, and hikers.
Many places claim to “have it all.” Montgomery

There is something for everyone in Montgomery County.
Whether your time in our area allows you part of a day or the
better part of a week, you’ll find activities to suit your mood, the
season, and your interests.
For the
art-lover over a weekend:

art collection including works and prints by well known
artists with local ties, such as Lewis Miller and Walter
Biggs are displayed yearround.
If you have more time, consider … heading to Floyd
for regional arts and crafts galleries in their downtown. The
drive along Route 8 out of Christiansburg may inspire the
latent artist in you to sketch or paint the scenery – stock up
with art supplies from MishMish (www.mishmish.com) in
Blacksburg and Michael’s in Christiansburg before you go.

Start with breakfast at Gillie’s, whose walls are graced
with rotating local artists. Stroll up Draper Avenue, and check
out the Armory Art Gallery. A block over on Main Street you’ll
find the XYZ Gallery, Matrix Gallery (matrixgallery.com), and
Art Pannonia. Head north to check out the artist cooperative at
Main Lee Art (mainleeart.com).
For the art connoisseur, consider a visit to the
Montgomery Museum and Lewis Miller Regional Art Center
(montgomerymuseum.org). Local artists are housed in the second
floor art gallery, and change every two months, while permanent

Montgomery County is home to the maroon and
orange clad Hokies, with more than 21 athletic teams from
football and baseball to swimming and hockey (hokiesports.
com). Tailgating is a way of life here, so get ready for the
game with Hokie-themed clothing, chairs, grills and more
available from local retailers.
If you can’t score tickets, or if it’s just too rainy for
even a die-hard Hokie fan, you can take cover at one of the
nearby sports bars, where there are big screens to watch the
big game.
For someone who wants to be more than just a
casual observer, consider a trip to the new Hardraker Sports
Complex, featuring three lighted multi-purpose fields, and
tennis and basketball courts. You can even take a dip in the
Blacksburg or newly-constructed Christiansburg Aquatic
Center featuring heated indoor facilities.
Don’t overlook the friday night high school football
games in Blacksburg and Christiansburg where you often
get a glimpse of future VT players.

Start your Saturday at Blacksburg’s Farmer’s
Market and see what local treats you discover (Blacksburg:
bbfarmersmarket.org). Plans are also currently underway to
begin hosting a farmer’s market in Christiansburg in 2011. You
can also pay a visit to Sinkland Farms for the freshest produce
(sinklandfarms.com).
Gourmet Pantry boasts a chef’s wonderland of cooking
equipment and edibles. They offer regular cooking classes –
check out their schedule at gourmetpantryonline.com. You may
also wish to consider a trip to Annie Kay’s for a great selection
of natural and organic foods.
The Vintage Cellar offers wine tastings every Friday
night and wine tastings on Saturdays. Zeppoli’s does wine
and food pairings as well, typically every-other Wednesday
(zeppolis.com). The Summit Restaurant in Christiansburg offers
fine dining in a restored Victorian-era home (summitrestaurant.
us).
Some of the loveliest pastries in the area can be found
at Our Daily Bread bakery, owned by French-trained pastry chef
Thierry Tellier and his wife Danielle. Sample some of Chocolate
Spike’s handmade chocolates or Grama’s Goodies and Sweet
Shop’s famous confections.
For the
history buff over a weekend:
Stay at one of the historic homes in the area: Inn at Hans
Meadow, Yellow Sulpher Springs, or The Oaks. There are multiple
historic sites to visit in the area, from Smithfield Plantation and
Solitude on the Virginia Tech campus to civil war battle sites. If
you’re visiting the third Saturday in September, check out the
Wildernes Trail Festival in Christiansburg. It’s in honor of Daniel
Boone’s stop in Christiansburg, where Davy Crockett worked at
a haberdashery.
If you have more time, consider a visit to the
Christiansburg Institute. This was the first school to provide
secondary education for African-Americans in Southwest
Virginia; in 1895, Booker T. Washington served as an advisor.
The Coal Miners Heritage Park (newriverheritage.
org) is located along the Huckleberry Trail on the site of the
former Merrimac Mine – its namesake, the ironclad Merrimac,
used its coal during Civil War sea battles.

Arts Fusion: artsfusion.net April 8-15 2011 ArtsFusion is a
celebration of the arts on the Virginia Tech campus, in the Town
of Blacksburg and throughout the New River Valley.
Fork & Cork: blacksburgpartnership.org April 30 2011 A food,
wine and art festival at Blacksburg’s First & Main shopping area is
an adventure for the senses featuring wines from regional wineries,
culinary delights from local restaurants, cooking demonstrations
from celebrity chefs, regional art and wine lover accessories, all
enjoyed amid live music.
Brew Do, Blacksburg’s annual craft beer festival. Blacksburg Brew Do offers the best in craft brewers from the Mid
Atlantic region, featuring dozens of varieties of beer and
ales. The event promises a day of great beer tasting, food
from Blacksburg’s best restaurants, and live entertainment.
The Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil
War Commission’s third annual signature conference:
virginiacivilwar.org May 21 2011, will feature noted historians
discussing military strategy in the American Civil War. The
conference will highlight Virginia and the Eastern Theater, as
well as the Western Theater of the War. Speakers will also discuss
forgotten elements of the war, such as weather and horses,that
affected military strategy and tactics. As a special treat, the
Stonewall Brigade Band will perform during the lunch break.

This festival features over 185 artists and crafts people from
around the United States selling unique handcrafted items
– jewelry, pottery, textiles, metal work, basketry, stained &
fused glass, yard art, fine art, furniture, toys, artisan foods and
more. Street performances make the scene magical.
Summer Arts Festival: Beginning in late May and
continuing into late August, this collaboration between
Virginia Tech and the Town of Blacksburg offers live theatre
productions; gallery exhibitions at the Armory Art Gallery;
outdoor musical concerts, an Independence Day Celebration
sponsored by the Town of Blacksburg; the Steppin’ Out Street
Festival; and three classic films sponsored by and shown at

Duck Pond: Located on Virginia Tech’s campus, students
and residents alike enjoy feeding geese and, of course, ducks
around this man-made pond. It’s particularly popular in the
spring when the cherry trees bloom. Solitude (historic sites)
overlooks the Duck Pond, and Historic Smithfield Plantation is
less than a mile away.
Ellett Valley Nature Trail: Located off Jennelle Road, this
one-mile loop trail has information about local flora and fauna
along its route. Easy and fun with kids.

Huckleberry Trail: This converted railroad route is anchored
at the Blacksburg Public Library and the NRV Mall in

Montgomery County’s denser urban areas and
spacious rural areas provide a range of housing options as
diverse as the people who choose to call this area home.
The county itself has golf-course style homes,
individual farms, single homes on larger tracts, and
neighborhoods more closely settled, for an “old fashioned”
neighborhood experience. Downtown Blacksburg has condos
for sale and rent; the Village at Tom’s Creek and Shadowlake
Village put emphasis on community with shared common areas
for play and catching up with neighbors. The more established
areas surrounding downtown boast a range of architectural
styles and neighborhood types. Most apartment complexes are
located on or near bus routes.
In Christiansburg, housing across a broad price range
combined with easy commuting options via uncongested
Route 460, or I-81 north and south, plus the SmartWay bus
and/or the “Two Town Trolley” make for an attractive home

Blacksburg Industrial Park, the Corporate Research
Center (CRC), and Falling Branch Industrial

Blacksburg Industrial Park has eleven

The CRC is the fastest growing corporate
park east of the Mississippi, with 27 existing buildings
totaling 965,000 square feet on 120 acres. These
facilities currently house more than 140 tenants with
2,200 employees and 600 students. An additional 650
students attend the Edward Via School of Osteopathic
medicine, also located at the CRC. As we go to press,
the CRC is breaking ground for another 28 buildings.
When completed, this second phase will see an
additional 950,000 square feet and approximately 3,000
employees.
CRC tenants can sponsor research at Virginia
Tech. Virginia Tech faculty work with the CRC to
identify student projects that would be best done at the
CRC (eg, MBA students may create business plans for
CRC companies).
Finally, the CRC’s incubator program, VT
KnowledgeWorks supports entrepreneurs who are
creating companies based on Virginia Tech developed
technology licensed by Virginia Tech Intellectual
Properties. Perhaps most telling is that the CRC attracts
an average of twenty new tenant companies each year.
Childcare is available nearby; the CRC is
adjacent to US 460 and the Virginia Tech airport. Those
seeking to balance a desk job with exercise can bike or

Downtown revitalization and enhancement efforts have
been recently completed in Christiansburg and are underway in

Unique local shops and nationally-recognized franchises
provide shoppers an appealing blend of options; those wishing to

The small-town feel of the Towns’ downtown shopping
areas contrasts with the mall-style shopping available at the
junction of Pepper’s Ferry Road and US 460. Locals call this the
shopping “mecca;” national franchise stores, and a 14-screen movie

The I-81 interchanges with Interstates 77 and 64 put
Falling Branch within a day’s drive of two-thirds of
the nation. The cooperative and collaborative nature of
economic development in Montgomery County means
that Falling Branch tenants can leverage the advantages
of Virginia Tech’s proximity. Tenants can participate
as members of an industrial affiliate group to obtain
research results on problems common to their industry;
sponsor research; use Virginia Tech research facilities;
and license and commercialize technologies developed
by Virginia Tech researchers.

Education
The foundation for the higher education opportunities
in the region – Virginia Tech (p.32), Radford University (p.
33) and New River Community College (p. 34) is laid in
the K-12 years, and Montgomery County strives to provide
a solid base for all its students. Montgomery County Public
Schools (MCPS) serves 393 square miles, and includes not
only the towns of Christiansburg and Blacksburg but rural
communities such as Price’s Fork, Riner, Plum Creek, Elliston,
and Shawsville.
In December 2009, the County committed to new
schools in both Blacksburg (the High School) and Auburn
(the Middle School); they will also renovate the Auburn
Middle School. This is a continuation of the School Board’s
Capital Improvements Plan, which has set the County upon its
course of updating and building new educational facilities for
the 9,700 elementary through high school students it serves.
A total of twelve elementary schools, four middle, four high
and two secondary alternative schools serve the County’s four
attendance areas.
MCPS also boasts thirty National Board Certified
Teachers. “National Board Certification is one indicator
of excellence in the teaching profession,” notes Brenda
Blackburn, MCPS Superintendent.
In their own words, “the mission of Montgomery
County Public Schools is to be a community of excellence

that develops each student’s full potential to be a lifelong
learner and a productive global citizen.” 93 to 98 percent of
2009’s senior class graduated, with many students going on to
earn degrees at universities and colleges nationwide.
One example of MCPS’s educational innovation is
the SEARCH program. In this innovative approach to real-life
education and employment, MCPS partners with the Carilion
Medical Clinic, the Virginia Department of Rehabilitation and
the Virginia Department of Education.
Private educational options are also available in the
County. The New School, a parent-teacher cooperative, has
as its mission “to serve students, teachers, and parents by
providing a cooperative educational environment.” They are
committed to academic and civic excellence, to individual and
community responsibility, and to the love of learning.
Tall Oaks Montessori provides a curriculum and
multi-year classroom setting based on Maria Montessori’s
philosophy that “the child’s play is [his] work.”
For those seeking a faith-based education, St.
John Neuman’s Academy’s mission statement says they
“are committed to providing an academic and faith-filled
environment in the Catholic tradition.” Pathway Christian
Academy’s mission is “to partner with the home and church to

Virginia’s largest full-time student population: 23,700
undergraduate and approximately 7,000 graduate students
choose VT, located in the Town of Blacksburg, for their
undergraduate and/or graduate education.
The University’s motto, Ut Prosim, translates
as “That I may serve” and VT combines three missions
(learning, discovery and engagement) to educate its enrollees.
Tech has nine colleges and graduate schools, 65 bachelor’s
degree programs, 145 master and doctoral degree programs.
Learning, teaching and research occurs across the main
campus (125 buildings on 2,600 acres), and extends to the
adjacent Corporate Research Center (p. 29).
Virginia Tech ranks 27th among national public
universities; its College of Engineering is 13th nationally
amongst all accredited engineering schools offering doctorates,
and seventh among engineering schools at public universities.
Nine of the college’s undergraduate engineering programs
are ranked among the top 20 of their peer programs. The
Pamplin College of Business undergraduate program is 10th
among public institutions. Its overall ranking places it in the
top 10 percent of the approximately 524 U.S. undergraduate
programs accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate
Schools of Business International. And Tech’s undergraduate
architecture program, at the School of Architecture + Design,

and Columbia universities.
In University research rankings, Tech is 46th

for the recently-established Edward Via Virginia College of

Two healthcare groups serve Montgomery County
residents: Carilion and LewisGale Regional Health System.
Their resources, combined with the cutting-edge research
occurring at Virginia Tech, give local citizens with a rare
combination of access to comprehensive facilities, medical
technology and personalized small-town connections with
their health practitioners.
Between these two providers, patients have access
to a broad range of services that will cover their needs in
any situation: Level I & Level III trauma centers; diagnostic
imaging; a digital cardiology system; an emergency transport
helicopter; genetic counseling; and a full service women’s
center with sophisticated diagnostic and state-of-the-art
treatment options.
Furthermore, Carilion is part of a unique publicprivate partnership with Virginia Tech: the Virginia Tech
Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute builds on
VT’s world-class strength in basic sciences, bioinformatics,
and engineering, as they collaborate with Carilion Clinic’s
highly experienced medical staff and rich history in medical
education. They have a patient-centered curriculum that
focuses on addressing the growing need for physicians who
are “research-competent,” and can translate that research
expertise into practical bedside and community applications.
The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine
(vcom.vt.edu), also at Virginia Tech, trains physicians in
the osteopathic approach to health care. They emphasize

a role in Montgomery County’s progressive health care
climate.
Residents who want to take care of themselves proactively will find multiple gyms, fitness centers and classes
in a variety of venues, from personal trainers to YMCA
classes. Dentists, ophthalmologists and optometrists are
widely accessible; dermatology specialists, including
those offering cosmetic treatments, are also available. And
alternative and complementary approaches to health care,
including acupuncture, chiropractic adjustments, massage
therapy, meditation, mental health services, physical
therapy, reiki, and yoga (including southwest Virginia’s
first “hot” yoga studio) abound in Montgomery County.

status, the nation’s highest recognition in nursing excellence
from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Strategic Goals
In December 2010, the Chamber Board of Directors with input from a variety of sources, worked with Paula Wilder and
Carol Huntley Weber of WilderWeber Leadership Group to
create strategic goals for 2011. Fundamentally, we began
with the understand that our Chamber connects businesses
and the broader community with key issues and advocates
on behalf of its members. In addition, we help member
businesses network, promote members’ businesses, extend
the reach of its members, provide important business services to its members, and creates a more favorable environment for new business. The Chamber helps and supports
the community at large. With key values of Professionalism,
Credibility, Community, Success, and Making a Difference,
the Chamber makes members feel part of a larger business
community. We outlined our three (3) Strategic Goals: build
community, enhance member success and create financial
stability. Each and every program, product, service, offering,
and ultimately our membership benefits all focus on these
goals and the value we offer.
A UNITED VOICE FOR WESTERN VIRGINIA ON ISSUES
THAT AFFECT THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY
The Montgomery County Chamber has joined VA West. This
coalition is comprised of the Chambers from Bedford Area,
Charlottesville Regional, Danville/Pittsylvania County, Franklin County, Greater Bluefield, and HarrisonburgRockingham, Lexington-Rockbridge County, Lynchburg Regional, Martinsville-Henry County, Roanoke Regional, SalemRoanoke County, Smith Mountain Lake, Twin County Regional, and Wytheville-Wythe-Bland.
In addition to the very successful, Eggs & Issues, being an active member of VA West provides members with current information about issues influencing business. Prior to every legislative session, the Chamber invites all elected officials to discuss
issues that will be addressed by the session with input from our
members. As a follow up, the Legislators are invited back for a
post-session review.
This year we have given significant input on redistricting issues
as well as bringing schools and transportation to the forefront of
our discussions. As a business community, we are so fortunate
to have the depth of talent and interest in local, regional, and
