New Beginnings, Fond Farewell
Fall is my favorite time of year. Though bittersweet, I love the change in the
air – a mixture of memories of warm summer days and anticipation of winter’s
nostalgic snows. Like fall, this issue of Braunvieh World is bittersweet for me,
as I’m resigning as managing editor. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed getting to know
several Braunvieh breeders, attending junior nationals in Wahoo, Neb., and
seeing the success of the magazine, as this is the biggest issue published since I
joined BluePrint Marketing LLC in the fall of 2010. Special thanks to Bill Pollard
and everyone who’s contributed through ad sales for the size of this book. Going
forward, I’ll still be doing some feature writing, and will be home with my son,
Miles, and helping my husband, Kolby, with our sheep operation.
Braunvieh World will be left in good hands. Traci Eatherton, Sundance, Wyo.,
and I have worked together on this issue, and she will be taking over fully for the
Winter Issue. Traci comes to BluePrint with an extensive background in agricultural journalism, with professional experience that includes serving as managing
editor of the Western Livestock Journal, director of communications for the
Colorado Cattlemen’s Association, and numerous faculty positions at community colleges on Colorado’s Front Range.
Several of you also may have noticed another shift in personnel while working on ads for this issue. While long-time designer Kathie Bedolli is still working
with many breeders on their ads, BluePrint team member Sarah Gee has taken
on several advertising assignments, as well as design and layout for the magazine. Sarah joined BluePrint in the summer of 2014 when we acquired production and publishing responsibilities for The Voice magazine, the official publication of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders and Exhibitors Association. As a
company, BluePrint feels very fortunate to have so many capable team members.
As fall moves forward, be sure to keep in mind that ad sales for the Winter Issue of Braunvieh World close Dec. 5. 

The Get Your Kicks on Route 66, Braunvieh Junior Nationals show was held June 16-19 in Springfield, Missouri.
The show lived up to its name, as the week was jam-packed
with entertaining contests and activities for all the juniors.
Competitors came from across the country and the juniors
caught up with old friends and made new ones.
The environment and activities fostered learning, leadership, teamwork, character, work ethic, confidence and
much more, while keeping the focus on having fun with the
greatest breed of cattle!
The well-organized show kicked off after haul-ins, with
the JBAA officers meeting Tuesday evening. Wednesday, the
youths engaged in some friendly competition with the quiz
bowl, a fast-paced test of the teams’ knowledge that was
both educational and interactive.
The Missouri Braunvieh Association provided lunch, and
the juniors had a blast with the scavenger hunt that followed.
After cattle were bedded down in tie-outs for the night, there
was a social pool party at the motel, complete with pizza.
Thursday morning, the youth demonstrated their speaking skills and knowledge of their cattle in the salesmanship
contest. The Missouri Braunvieh Association kept us fueled
up at lunchtime, after which the contestants were back at
it for a very tough showmanship competition, followed by
10
the bred and owned show. Everyone relaxed and enjoyed
the always entertaining and creative cow-costume contest,
then prepared for the seriousness of the team fitting. Dinner
at Golden Corral was a laid-back time for both juniors and
adults. Friday, the week wrapped up with the grand finale,
the owned cattle show and JBAA annual awards banquet,
with its auction fundraiser and heifer raffle.
I hope that anyone who could not make it to the show
this year can come next year, as it is an awesome experience
that leaves one encouraged about the future of our great
breed and the beef industry.
The junior show is a source of regeneration within the
breed that encourages the youth to learn, work together
and help one another out. Observing a young or new member begin the week shy and insecure, then leave more confident, knowledgeable, and excited than they were before, is
what the youth program is all about, and it showed.
I want to thank all of the sponsors who supported the
show. I also want to thank Don Hankins and everyone at
the Missouri Braunvieh Association who put in work and
helped stage this great event. I can’t wait to see what the
coming year holds for the JBAA and its members.

Samples Still Needed for BAA Genomics Project

It’s the year 2015. Many in agriculture have seen commodity price
highs and lows, trends come and go,
and technology change the way we
produce our product. On the forefront
of that technology are genomically-enhanced expected progeny differences
(GE-EPDs). The Braunvieh Association
of America (BAA) is taking progressive
steps to incorporate genomics into
existing EPDs to increase accuracy,
especially of young animals – but they
still need your help collecting samples
to get the project off the ground.
evaluation is the process of calculating
EPDs,” Genho explains. “The idea is to
take pedigree information, recorded
phenotypes – like weights and carcass
data – and genomic information and
boil everything down to a single number for each animal.”
Currently, the BAA has about
300 genotypes, but it requires
400 to 500 genotypes to start
the process.
Single-Step Approach
To offer this technology economically to the membership, the BAA
subcontracted with the International
Brangus Breeders Association (IBBA),
but the BAA maintains their own
identity within the IBBA. Groups
of samples are mailed to Livestock
Genetic Services (LGS), which then
forwards the DNA on to Igenity. John
Genho, founder of LGS, works with
the data generated by Igenity to help
develop Braunvieh GE-EPDs.
The biggest opportunity Genho
sees for Braunvieh breeders is to
build more accurate numbers through
the incorporation of genomics – a
branch of science concerned with
development and utilization of DNA
sequences and genetic maps that represent the architecture of the genome.
So, instead of breeders having one
prediction of an animal’s value from a
genomics company (i.e., genomic test
results) and one prediction from their
breed association (i.e., EPDs), they
will have a single number that includes all of the information. “Genetic

genetic testing are certainly nothing
new. What is new is the process and
economics of the test, which are now
within reach for many breeders.
“Most recently, interest has been
shown in the use of a single-step
method to calculate GE-EPDs – the
single-step method uses raw SNP
[single nucleotide polymorphism] data
from DNA tests without the need for
a large number of animals to build a
training population,” Tommy Perkins,
Ph.D., executive vice president, IBBA,
explains. “The single-step method has
served the smaller breeds very well
and it appears that even the larger
breeds are beginning to use the same
methodology.”
Now, from a single DNA sample of
blood, hair and/or semen, breeders
can identify parentage, homozygosity
for black or wild-type color, quality
grade, tenderness, feed efficiency and
other traits. This is important because many producers, purebred and
commercial alike, utilize multiple sire
pastures. “In ranch settings, multiple
sire mating strategies can be used
and resulting sire identification can
occur. Thus, cattle producers can now
determine the number of progeny
sired by each bull in the same breeding
pasture,” Perkins explains.

Further, using GE-EPDs for registered cattle in particular is the most accurate way to evaluate young bulls and
heifers, Ryan Ruppert, MS, MBA, U.S.
sales director, Neogen, says. “GE-EPDs
combine the current EPD system with
genetic markers from chips to provide
the equivalent of 10 to 20 offspring
records per trait for most virgin bulls
and heifers,” Ruppert says. That can
dramatically increase the accuracy
of an animal’s EPDs, giving breeders
more confidence in the animal’s true
genetic ability. “Working with the BAA
to genotype your animals will allow for
the required genotypes to create these
GE-EPDs and give the BAA the ability
to better compete in this fast-paced,
changing environment in the seedstock
sector,” Ruppert continues. Currently,
the BAA has about 300 genotypes,
but it requires 400 to 500 genotypes
to start the process. “Information is
power and the power of genomics is
reshaping the beef cattle industry
– please join other BAA breeders in
genotyping your registered Braunvieh
cattle to allow BAA the capabilities to
use GE-EPDs,” Ruppert urges.
Below is an example of an animal in
the IBBA registry that has had GEEPDs generated using the single-step
method. The Fall 2014 IBBA EPDs
don’t include genomics, whereas the
Spring 2015 EPDs do. “You should
note that some of the EPD values go
up (e.g. WW [weaning weight] from 22
to 24) and some EPD values go down
(e.g., REA [ribeye area] 0.77 to 0.72)
with a single DNA result,” Perkins
points out. “Most importantly, note
that the accuracies of all four EPDs get
better (higher) – for example, birth
weight EPD accuracy goes from 0.28 to
0.46 with the single DNA result.”

Without question, young, unproven
animals receive the biggest benefit
from DNA technology. “The higher the
EPD accuracy, the less impact DNA results will have on the actual EPD and/
or the accuracy of the EPD,” Perkins
explains.
Understanding the importance of
the newest technology and transitioning to its use will put the Braunvieh
breed in a good position. “I’m confident that breeders who choose to
incorporate GE-EPDs in their herd will
have a marketing advantage in the future,” Perkins concludes. “This validation will give buyers more confidence
in the animals they are purchasing.”
It is important that Braunvieh breeders take a serious look at this tool to
improve the accuracy of their EPDs.
A FEW WORDS FROM JOHN GEHNO
Our goal here at LGS is to provide the best
genetic predictions (or EPDs) we can to our
customers. As we’ve looked through the
Braunvieh data, we’ve realized there are
two opportunities for increasing the value
of the BAA EPDs. They are: 1) increasing the
amount of data coming from breeders, and
2) using genomic tests.
Increasing the amount of data coming
from breeders doesn’t necessarily mean
breeders need to gather more data.
Instead, we need to create ways to capture
data that breeders are already collecting.
As we’ve developed the online registry,
we’ve kept this in mind and developed a
user-friendly format for breeders to enter
data such as birth weights and weaning
weights. This increase in data will increase
the accuracy of the EPDs we generate,
which will greatly increase their value.
FALL 2015
Genomics is an area where there have been
many ups and downs over the past several
years. Contributing to the confusion and
frustration has been the fact that tests have
not been marketed and reported through
breed associations. Instead, a parallel
channel of information flow has been created, which has given breeders two sets of
numbers: EPDs from their association and
genomic predictions from a genomics company. LGS will correct this issue by offering a
genomics test that will be available through
IBBA/BAA. The results of this test will flow
directly to the association and will be automatically incorporated into the EPDs.

new tools this change will provide you as
Braunvieh breeders. We’re optimistic these
changes will be for the better, and we look
forward to the opportunity to work with
each of you improving BAA EPDs.

Jerry Crownover, Ph.D., was raised on a diversified livestock farm, deep in the heart of the Missouri Ozarks. After
graduation from Gainesville High School, he enrolled at the
University of Missouri in the College of Agriculture, where
he received a bachelor’s degree in 1974 and a Master’s of
Education degree in 1977. He taught high school vocational
agriculture for five years, then enrolled at Mississippi State
University, where he received a doctorate in agricultural
and extension education. Crownover served as a professor of agricultural education at Missouri State University
(MSU) for 17 years. In 1997, he resigned his position at
MSU to do what he originally intended to after he got out
of high school – raise cattle. He now works and lives on a
beef cattle ranch in Lawrence County, Mo., with his wife
Judy and sons Seth and Zach.

Green Springs Bull Test at Nevada, Mo., will start a fall
test Oct. 1 for calves born Jan. 1 to March 15, 2015. The
late fall test starts Dec. 1, 2015, and will include bulls born
March 16 to May 31, 2015. For more information, contact

Tattoo “C” for 2015
The BAA has not reserved a block of rooms in Kansas
City for the national events. However, the following hotels
are all located near the Kansas City Speedway, which is west
of downtown and the American Royal in the area of I-70
and I-435. Hotel rooms may be in short supply.

The arrival date for the fall bull test at the Genetic Development Center (GDC) in Navasota, Texas, has been changed
to Nov. 2-4, 2015, due to the large amount of cattle on test
now and the large number coming in this fall. Bulls born Dec.
1, 2014 to late March 2015 will be eligible for the fall test.
That group of bulls will complete the test March 13, 2016,
followed by the GDC bull sale at the end of March or early
April 2016. Online entry forms and fees are due by Oct. 19.
