SPRING/SUMMER 2003
LAGO DI MERLO PRESENTS CA’BELLA
Lago di Merlo is pleased
to introduce our new
label Ca’Bella. Ca’Bella is a
tribute to our Italian
forefathers and the Merlo
home in Piemonte, Italy
where past generations
resided over 200 years
ago and continue to reside today.
Father & son combined talent and vineyards to
produce Ca’Bella.
rived at noon spotlighting the roasted pig with
his back arched for the taking on the spit. This
hardy, multinational crowd handpicked grapes
by morning, celebrated by afternoon and departed by early evening.
2001 Ca’Bella Red Dry Creek Valley is an
Italian style red blend noteworthy of Dry
Creek Valley. Four varietals strike the palate in
the renewed fashion of blending artistry. In the
field and in the bottle, the grower and winemaker must always listen to the grape (in this
case grapes). We hope you’ll enjoy our Italian

its journey with Harry’s Harvest. In October,
Harry Merlo Jr. & Harry Merlo Sr.
friends arrived in the early morning hours to
toil in the Oregon vineyard while the sun ar-
“This wine is all about the exquisite Dry Creek fruit!! Bursting with
waves of peppery, raspberry notes wrapped around smoky oak tones
that are nicely intertwined. The texture is luscious and mouth-filling
and to me would be perfect with just about anything that one would
toss on to the grill.”

OLIVE HARVEST
ITALIAN STYLE
LAGO di MERLO VINEYARDS
THROUGH THE OLIVE TREES
This year, 50 olive trees bordering Lago di Merlo
(Merlo Lake) yielded 400 pounds of Picholine, Manzanillo, Frantoio and Mission olives.
These hand-selected, Tuscan varieties produced 3.8
gallons of oil using old world techniques honoring
one of the oldest known cultivated trees in the
world.
The five, unique varieties blend color, taste and
aroma and produced 3.8 gallons of olive oil.
Our family treasures the olive and the pleasure it
brings us throughout the year!

The HUNT for MUSHROOMS
Every winter, Harry Jr. and I set out on the Ranch with
our sons Dominic and Anthony in pursuit of our mushroom bounty along with Poppi. With Harry Sr.’s sharp eye
for hidden morsels and Harry Jr.’s knowledge of fungi we
discovered hordes of porcini and chanterelle mushrooms
this winter.
We unearthed enough delicacies to last a season of flavoring our favorite Italian recipes and look forward to our
traditional mushroom expedition next year.

CA’BELLA TASTING NOTES
CA’BELLA 2001 DRY CREEK VALLEY RED
A blend styled after those who have gone
before us in Italy. The marriage of 50% Zinfandel, 25% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Syrah enhances the singular
flavor and structure of each varietal creating a
master blend of beauty and harmony from
our mountain vineyards.
CA’BELLA 2002 WILLAMETTE
VALLEY PINOT GRIS
A sophisticated and beautifully crafted wine
with subtle tropical fruit and citrus aromas.
The absence of oak allows trace mineral and
floral elements to perfectly balance the fruit,
following with a smooth, rich finish. These
characteristics reflect the traditional
Northern Willamette Valley of Oregon.
LAGO di MERLO TASTING NOTES
2001 MERLOT
Lager tannin profile wine with deep color and layers of
flavor leaves a dusty mouth feel giving this Merlot panache.
$23
2001 CABERNET SAUVIGNON
This is a wonderfully extracted wine following
the recognized Dry Creek Character well. Soft tannins are
supported by fruit tones of blackberry and cherry. The oak
is well integrated, but not the front runner here.
$30
2001 SANGIOVESE
Wonderfully balanced red. Nice acid component dissolves
away to bing cherry flavors. Great wine paired with "sugo a
pomadori" (red tomato sauce) dishes.
$21
2000 ZINFANDEL
A surprisingly "spicy" wine with tones of clove and nutmeg.
Fruit foreword and well balanced on the back palate with a
trace amount of residual sugar.
GOLD MEDAL 2002 WEST COAST WINE COMPETITION
$26
2000 SYRAH
Bold and jammy with a defined tannin structure and flavors
of ripe plum with a smoky cedar cigar box finish. Two different clones of Syrah went into this 100% Sonoma County,
hillside, Dry Creek wine, making it unique and complex.
BRONZE MEDAL 2002 WEST COAST WINE

2000 CABERNET SAUVIGNON
A tribute to the varietal! It has a soft tannin structure with
flavors of black licorice and ripe berries. The new French
oak barrels selected for this wine lend a subtle "gun smoke"
character to the nose. We recommend this wine for those
2000 Lago di Merlo Cabernet Sauvignon
who crave a bolder style red wine.

Merlo Merlot: not redundant, an authentic pairing! Our
flagship wine offers a mouthful of bright fruit.
