THE LARDER LAKE TROUT
Known for healthy lake trout fisheries, this
could be the reason the fish was
immortalized near the town centre.

By Mike Jacobs
It’s no secret that I love riding in Northern Ontario.
It’s much more than a job for me, it’s almost a
spiritual connection – the open spaces, the miles of
forests, lakes and rivers, the small towns and the big
cities of Timmins, Sudbury, New Liskeard, North Bay
and Mattawa (the official boundary line that signifies
the start of the Northeastern part of Ontario).
At only three and a half hours from Toronto, it’s
also a place that I ride frequently enough to know
where all the good roads are, and I’ll go out of
my way time and again to make sure I get them
in each season. While the region is so vast, you’ll
have no trouble finding more than ten roads to
ride, but these are the ones that never fail to put a
smile on my face.
As you ride around the region on your epic road
trip, you may notice Northeastern Ontario has
some interesting roadside attractions along the
way. Call them weird, or call them Canadian
folk art, these attractions beckon you
into their welcoming towns and
most of them have an interesting
story to tell.
MANITOU is just down Hwy. 11, the very big bison
roaming in Earlton.

Riding in
THE BIG NICKEL
The Big Nickel is, well, big! It’s 64
million times larger than the nickel
you’d find in your pocket. Located
just outside of Sudbury city limits,
next to Dynamic Earth where you
can learn first hand about mining.
Riding through the little town of Eldee from North Bay, this
integral part of the Temiskaming Loop offers an incredible
view of the Ottawa river, as you ride down a ridge overlooking
the river that separates Ontario and Quebec. If you’re headed
north on this road, there’s a great little dirt turn off just big
enough for two bikes to stop for a photo op.
If you find yourself stopping to pose
with one of our roadside attractions,
tag us using #WeirdNeOnt on
Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
If there ever was a definition of twisty country road, this is it.
South of Hwy. 11, Hwy. 64 has fast curves and rapidly rolling
hills, while north of the Trans-Canada, it’s longer sweepers
with very light traffic. Even when heading home from the New
Liskeard Bikers Reunion, I’ll go out of my way to take this road
home, just for the sheer thrill.
This road didn’t always
figure very highly in my
rankings, mainly because it
was chewed up, full of frost heaves and tar strips,
and could be downright scary on any of it’s many rapidly
escalating corners (especially the closer you get to Sudbury) –
however, those mad wizards at the Ministry of Transportation
have seen fit to re-pave the entire road from stem to stern, and
it’s a thing of beauty.
6
Hwy. 637 to Killarney
OK, so the road quality isn’t amazing, but there are enough
twists, the scenery is pretty good – Lake St. George is probably
one of my favourite rest stops in Ontario – but the village
of Killarney, with both the Killarney Mountain Lodge and it’s
glorious kitsch, and the Sportsman’s Inn, with it’s indefatigable
opulence, make it so worth the ride. And of course, Herberts’
Fish and Chips – some say they might be the best in Ontario.
7
Hwy. 542 on
Manitoulin Island
3
Probably one of the only roads in the province with banked
corners. The pavement is the chip-tar, but that does mean
plenty of grip... and maybe some premature tire wear, but
who’s counting.
66 from Matachewan to Hwy. 11
This is one of those roads that you’ll only find in Northern
Ontario. Take a zig-zagging bunny trail of a logging road, and
then pave it. It’s a blast to ride, even if the scenery isn’t a show
stopper. Do this as a loop with the Elk Lake road AKA Hwy.. 65
when attending Bikers Reunion – you won’t be disappointed.
Hwy. 6 from Espanola
to Manitoulin Island
4
Anyone who’s done the Georgian Bay
Coastal Loop looks forward to this road.
Going south from the Trans-Canada, it has
long sweepers, massive rock cuts, and views
of the massive dam just outside Espanola. When you get
closer to the island, you’ll get tighter curves over dozens of
puddle-like lakes, and a turnoff for the hair-raising Willisville
Road. Not to mention the swing bridge, the only road link to
Manitoulin Island.

While this certainly isn’t the most technical road, it does
offer the best unobstructed views of Lake Temiskaming and is
always part of the Freedom Ride at the Bikers Reunion. It’s got
new pavement in most sections, and with a slight detour, you
can ride out to see the unfinished Grant mansion that is ranked
as the most expensive house in Canada.

Poutine
As a travelling gourmand, and with
my BIG appetite for local food,
I hit the region of Northeastern

Willisville Road
While this road is pretty short, it’s a special one. Not many roads
in Ontario can give you a nice technically twisty ride while
running you around a small mountain with epic views from high
above the surrounding landscape. It might be an oversell, but it’s fun.
The poutine craze is wide-spread, from Shanghai to
New York to North Bay. One can find endless versions
served-up in both low-end and high-end restaurants.
In fact, some deviations of this low-culture staple
gone gourmet might be missing the point. At its
best, poutine is made from basic ingredients that
would have been accessible to any Northern settler –
potatoes, cheese curds and gravy. This link to local diets and
locally available food might be part of the secret in poutine
becoming a truly Northern comfort food with that French
Canadian flair we so value in Northeastern Ontario.

ACCOMMODATIONS
Poutine is so BIG in Northeastern Ontario, they even serve it
up as a midnight treat for the party-goers in Temiskaming
Shores and Elk Lake. Airianna Misener, now 20, says she has
served up her Poutine Station to thousands since she was 16.
Her signature service uses a variety of seasoned Thornloe Curd.
Along the way, my discoveries included great fill-ups in the
villages of Elk Lake, Earlton and Sturgeon Falls. These are
serious small towns with BIG flavourful poutines. One of the
highlights on my discoveries is Sisters Café in Englehart. They
hit a homerun with their fresh cut fries, historical railroad
theme decor and hometown vibe.
RV’s, Bikers, Campers & Trailers are lined-up at Thornloe Cheese
and with good reason. This destination stop along Hwy. 11,
boasts the title of Ontario’s only Cheese Curd maker
along the Trans Canada Trail. This roadside
fromagerie makes thousands of pounds
of the deliciously squeaky
curd each year.
As a food explorer, both abroad and in my own kitchen, I
have discovered that the French roots in the region are the
reason behind why the poutine is simply delicious and
served the way it should be: classic curd style served atop
fresh cut crispy fries, and doused with a rich roux-style
gravy. There are BIG options in small places and they
are all a little different.
Ivan’s Restaurant in North Bay, established 1945, creates
a variety of poutines – from traditional curd to
house-shaved mozzarella. Owner-operator Kristina
purchased the restaurant in 2007, and has continued
to honour the time-tested traditions and recipes
that have made Ivan’s a long-standing destination
for quality family food and the regions’ first
breakfast poutine.

While other roads might be twistier, better paved, or have
more eye-opening scenery, this is one of those zen roads you
can ride and just bliss out on. I particularly like the switchbacks
through town in Gowganda – I’m sure the OPP has had lots of
fun slowing people down through there. And the Elk Lake Eco
Centre has some of the best food in the North, hands down.
There are plenty of other road
in this region, and lots of dirt s to explore
off-road rider. You can have fu if you’re an

Let your poutine curiosity lead you to Northeastern Ontario.
Snack your way around the region and try our favourites, or
discover a few of your own. With the endless toppings now
being served, go ahead and create something new, like a
fresh caught pan fried pickerel poutine or maybe it’s a pulled

GEORGIAN BAY
COASTAL ROUTE
TOUR COLOUR: ORANGE
TOTAL DISTANCE: 1400KM
Georgian Bay, considered Ontario’s 6th Great Lake is the
kind of ride that gives you a very good impression of how
diverse the Ontario landscape really is.
Winding atop the Niagara Escarpment, through the
La Cloche Mountains, along the Canadian Shield and
alongside two of Canada’s biggest freshwater beaches,
this ride is all framed within this huge, stunning fresh
body of water.

Food
The ChiCheemaun Ferry that connects Manitoulin Island
to Tobermory is a unique way to see the bay, with your
bike tied down safely below you. This route gets you as
close to the shore as possible but some of the best views
are just a short walk up a lookout tower, or one of the
many trails. Take a glass bottom boat ride, a floatplane
tour, or even a sea kayak excursion to experience it.

Georgian Bay can be done on its own or be included as
part of a larger Northeastern Ontario road tour. Allow a
minimum of three days for this ride.
Water has played a significant role in not only shaping
this landscape, but also in shaping the lives of its
inhabitants. First Nations and explorers traveled these
same routes, only by voyageur canoes and kayaks and
not chromed out V-twins. You can salute their spirits for
finding this place as you twist and wind your way around
the lake. Highlights include the Temagami Fire Tower
Lookout, Cobalt Mining Museum, World’s Shortest
Covered Bridge in Latchford, Fort Témiscamingue
National Historic Site, and Drapers Bakery in Mattawa.
Welcome to Northeastern Ontario, Canada,
where BIG adventures end with BIG smiles and
lasting memories.
